Bertjan Pot's most well known product is probably the Random Light (1999) but the Masks he makes out of colourful rope have also drawn quite some attention. Both the Random light and Masks started as a material research, which is basically the starting point of each work created by Bertjan Pot. The outcome is usually an interior product showing a fascination for techniques, structures, patterns and colours. Most experiments start quite impulsively by a certain curiosity for how things would function or how something would look. From there, Bertjan Pot takes on challenges with or without manufacturers to explore possibilities and push boundaries. The reward for each challenge is a new one.

Bertjan Pot is a Dutch artist who in these works uses the creation of masks to morph the features of the face. He uses several strips of coloured rope in order to simplify, elongate, and disfigure features of the face and make stretched and cartoonish looking faces that look almost scary but strangely friendly, that have a tribal essence to them.
In this article, Pot said he and fellow designer Vladi Rapaport, discovered this method of attaching ropes after a gfailed attempt at making rugs.
Mask making could be an interesting road to take for my project, however, I do have ideas for clay revolving around making features to then pull and deform manually myself that I could pull inspiration from Pot when I do it.

Philip Treacy

Philip is an Irish Designer, who makes hats and more more abstract headpieces; wearable sculpture. He makes more traditional fascinator style hats for runways, the British Royal family and celebrities. Also for runways and more editorial pieces, he makes much more avante-garde striking sculptural pieces, which ar emy personal favourite. I love the symmetry in some of his works and some look divine or deity like which is so striking.
After my research into Bertjan Pot and his mask making, I am feeling more and more inclined to explore wearable sculptures and fashion pieces in relation to the morphing and distorting o fthe face and its features. I feel this would be an interesting way of exploring the mental health and esteem side of the distortion, as it is clearly temporary - you can take it off.
