honestly, as an aspiring historian, my new(ish) hill to die on and what is growing to be my biggest pet peeve is the seemingly pervasive notion, judging by people's response to my undergrad degree and what my peers have experienced, that there's no work to be done in history. The books have been written, the shows have been produced, nothing new under the sun. My fellow humanities people - hell, even soft sciences people have definitely expressed this to me as well. And it's a crock of malarky.

Nothing shatters this illusion so profoundly like reading people's incredibly specific, hundreds of pages thesis or dissertation on the history of a particular airline or a writing utensil or religious strife in a less than two decade period in a very specific part of the U.K. or streetcars in a particular city or the gay community in one rural county in a span of less than a decade or a century's worth of Jewish labor history in colonial Georgia.

I mean, doing research and finding out there's fuck-all nothing or close to it on a subject you were really excited about (cries in undergraduate thesis) runs close, but at least with that you can delude yourself into thinking there's nothing there to be written or said or analyzed.

But the idea that everything's already been written & researched is a much harder sell when you're staring down a 324-page dissertation on the history of Delta airlines (but only to the second world war) or a 181-page thesis on the military-masculinity complex specifically in the U.S. context specifically from 1940-1963.

There are other reasons being a historian is difficult, and why there aren't that many historian jobs. Most of the reasons come down to money, and the field not being particularly valued as a producers public goods in a capitalist society. But it's not because there's not work to be done.

So I just found out about this thing that can happen to black cats when they're out in the sun for too long. Basically, it kinda bleaches their fur a little bit cause of like genetic stuff or smth. It's called rusting, and it kind of looks like this

Well, in light of the current arc, I think that it would be absolutely hilarious if this were to happen to Nightheart. The way that I'm thinking it happens is that, in ThunderClan and ShadowClan, they're underneath trees and stuff for a vast majority of the time. But when Night goes on the journey with Frostpaw, he's out in the open sun a lot more, until his back is just completely orange. How he would take this is up to interpretation (although I doubt it would go over with him very well)

and the thing is right is we are like best friends

and im not trying to purposefully like talk shit its just that once she kind of like stopped being friends with me and posted like my real name and my face online (which she knows im not comfortable about) and like made like hate vids on me and would like talk shit abt me in the corridors js loud enough so i could hear her and it made me want to genuinely kill myself

i DO NOT support wilbur or lovejoy anymore as wilbur is a terrible person. my heart extends to shubble, alice, nikki, and anyone else wilbur may have hurt unbeknownst to the public. however shubble isnt much of a good person either as of what i have heard.

low-key one of the most toxic positivity-esque traits of social justice culture is that I don't see people publicly talking about is that some marginalized people suck as people but still are entitled to rights. Instead, I see a lot of "marginalized person from x community did a wonderful thing, all people from x have been so nice to me, obviously, they deserve rights" and while it's lovely that person was nice to you I'm actually not comfortable with the "was nice = gets rights" equation. There are four big reasons for this:

It shuts down conversations regarding when someone marginalized was shitty or problematic (including to another marginalized person). I've encountered seriously fucked and negatively impactful behavior from other neurodivergent people, but it doesn't feel like it's okay to talk about it in SJ spaces. The same goes for encountering antisemitism and sexism from other minorities. I don't find it healthy for our spaces or good for progress on the whole, nor does it actually help people learn to do better.

I'm not on board with generalizing entire groups of people as Fundamentally Good. People are messy and there's something incredibly off-putting about what is essentially stereotyping groups, even if the intent is good. Do you only care about my rights if I'm a GoodJew™ or a palatable neurodivergent person? What happens if someone deviates from the Good Person standard - how does that impact your (or your audience's) views when someone inevitably deviates?

There are some bad roads when counter-examples are brought to the table. At the very least, "x group is fundamentally Good People Who Are Nice" is a weak argument. What happens when you meet a counterexample, if this is the foundational reason you fight for rights? If the driving force behind your belief in the right to housing and a safety net is transient folks being nice to you, how do you make this argument to someone who lives in a place where unhoused men are aggressive and shout explicit threats to passersby? "Nice to me" is not a standard that can be held consistently enough to actually engage people with philosophical changes.

Even shitty people deserve rights. Even the people you like least. If you spend enough time in any space, SJ ones included, you will encounter people you Just Don't Like or who have actively problematic views or behaviors. Hell, you might even deal with people who actively hurt you, and that doesn't negate their fundamental human rights. The worst person you know, the person who had the most negative impact on your life, the person you personally have no inclination to forgive - they are fundamentally entitled to the same rights you are. But that doesn't really work in a "x group was SO NICE and that's why I should support them" framework.

I'm not saying that it's a bad thing to talk about the nice things that people did for you. I'm saying that linking rights to behaviors is a bad road, and can lead to toxic positivity and the stifling of other conversations.
