Making Narinder

Since Narinder has gotten lots of attention, I thought I'd share in a little more detail what specific parts from AelithArt's wide catalog he's made from, cause he's a little mix and match + a custom, remixed head.

Head: The head is a remix of one of Aelith's DIY pieces, made by FrozenOverStudio. She hasn't posted it on Etsy or Cults yet, but the STL file IS available for purchase and you can reach out to her at [email protected] if you'd like to purchase it. It comes with eyes chips. Chest/Paws/Feet/Lower Torso: Wolfy

Thighs/Knees/Shins/Shoulders/Elbows: Original Kabbit

Forearms: You only need the one piece from this, unfortunately, if you want the bony look on his forearms, but it's the Zombie. This piece is a little tricky to use because 1. the bone forearm is only on one side, so you have to mirror it before printing, and 2. it's so freaking narrow! It's really hard to get the knot of your string through the channel. I eventually gave up, made my string a little shorter, and set it in such a way that the knot is actually still chilling near his wrist.

Tail: Additional Head and Ears set, which is also great if you wanna make a yellow cat~

I printed him on an Elegoo Saturn 2 in grey (cause black was being stupid and wouldn't cure)

A lot of the below comes in bulk - I tend to print multiple dolls to bring to conventions but just keep it in mind for yourself; at the very least it'll give you an idea of size.

The magnets in his head are 8x2mm magnets (no link but you can generally find these pretty easily online and in craft stores)

Magnets for tail and the back of his lower torso are 5x2mm (not sure why this was smaller? But my other magnets didn't fit. If I'd noticed BEFORE painting, I could have dremelled it...wasn't willing to do it by that point.)

2mm elastic string

S-hook in neck

S-hook in wrists and ankles - It turned out these were a SMIDGE small for the ankles so I needed to use a set of pliers to widen them a little. So far, they're holding fine.

Altogether, this does seem like quite the investment, but I got a lot of these sets either over a period of time or after I joined Aelith's patreon. For $10 a month, he releases new parts or ful dolls that are available to you. He also does months where you can pick a sculpt so if there's a sculpt you want but it was released before you became a member, you can request it.

I hope that covers about everything? I'm not really aiming for like, a full tutorial, but I at least wanted to share everything that went into putting him together.

I can't wait to get his robes.

A lot less pieces will go into Lambert, they'll be a modded Sheepy head on the base Kabbit. Debating if I want the crown to be just...attached to their head, though. Like built into it. If it's a separate piece, I'm not sure how I'd keep it on their head.

Dolls I haven't bought

Even though I really want them. Just haven't pulled the trigger. I imagine it seems like I buy everything I see, but there's gotta be a stopping point somewhere...

DollZone The Hanged Man, blank, gray resin, in stock at Denver Doll Emporium (DDE). MSD, so technically too small. But those wings, man.

Dream Valley Eternal Vow Freyja Mantis full set, also in stock at DDE. I have Rita. I don't need two mantitaurs. I just want two.

Dream Valley Abyss Mermaid full set, in stock at DDE. Yes, I have one already. I want two, dammit.

Dream Valley (noticing a theme yet?) Belinda Elf full set, in stock at DDE. I already have Cecilia, which is what is stopping me. But I waaaants her.

Angel of Dream Zimei, ACBJD. I'd have to pre-order her, but AoD pre-orders are generally filled in a month or less, which is practically instant gratification in this hobby. I think she's going to be my next purchase. I've been eyeing her for a solid year.

Fairyland Nuia Elf Designer complete (full set), in stock at DDE. Two things make me balk: 1) the body. I have one. I am not a fan. 2) the price. Fairyland is expensive AF.

I stare at them longingly, and then I reluctantly close the browser. Not today. Maybe later.

Really think I'm going to get that AoD doll soon, though.

astarion's honestly the perfect candidate for one of those beautiful ball jointed dolls that are super nicely painted and have like tons of nice clothes but alas im not a wealthy hobbyist and i also dont enjoy any dolls bigger than 1/6 (and they just dont make a lot of dolls that small that aren't babies or fairies or animals... sigh)

There are doll companies that have been with us for a long time. Through thick and thin! And still offering your favorite sculpts.

Or, maybe they're not your favorite, but they were dolls that piqued your interest and you notice them every time you see them. "Maybe someday," you might think to yourself. But these brands are ever reliable, always there, so there's no danger of the doll going away.

Is there a doll or company that is an intermittent passing fancy, one to catch your eye when you remember they exist? If all bjd production were to shut down, which doll do you think you'd feel fomo for the most?

The universe has flipped me a giant fucking bird this week so i'm going to commit retail therapy to make myself feel better and go ahead and buy a head for Faolan now...if I can decide which one to go with.

I have the money, so why not? Yes I also need a body for Vanora still, but the Impldoll muscle body isn't out yet anyway.

There's a few on the secondhand market i like, and Muhyul and Ruan are up for order on Faithz, but most of the ones I've looked at I'd need to modify in *some* way--either dying (the easiest tbh, though I'd have to remove old faceup residue on some and that could be a gamble), or changing the eye shape, or both. And I'm a little nervous about doing eye mods on an expensive switch head :/

Fun Fact: I actually have a Thoth deck. The larger Thoth which I trimmed and covered the backs. I’ve only read with it a few times. I just prefer RWS and Marseille. 

Another Fun Fact: Most of my decks, like most on the market, are RWS, but I do enjoy a Marseille deck. One of my favorite decks is actually a Marseille deck. Though, it has illustrated pips, the Jonasa Jaus Tarot.

There are ~grail~ dolls, and then there are dolls that I really, REALLY want which are somehow not grail dolls in my mind. Today, I wanted to go through all of the dolls I wanted since starting the hobby in 2009, and rank them based on how I feel about them now. Since it's chronological order, you'll probably also get a pretty good idea of my taste in dolls and how that's also changed over time.
