Lecture 3: “Mr. Lee,” by The Bobbettes, an all-female group consisting of five young women – all school friends – from Harlem, was the band’s biggest hit. “Mr. Lee” catapulted The Bobbettes into the Top 10 in the summer of 1957. The Bobbettes recorded for a time on the Atlantic label, and then bounced around to different labels: Triple-X, RCA, Victor, Diamond and Mayhew. The Bobbettes eventually broke up in the early 1970s, but they were a trailblazing female act of the 1950s, even if they didn’t enjoy the same level of success as their male contemporaries at the time. They would set an important precedent for numerous so-called “girl groups” that emerged in the 1960s.

The Chantels were a pop music group and were the second African-American girl group to enjoy nationwide success in the United States, preceded by The Bobbettes. The group was established in the early 1950s by students attending St. Anthony of Padua Church and school in the Bronx. The original five members consisted of Arlene Smith (lead) (October 5, 1941), Sonia Goring Wilson (born Millicent Goring) (1940), Renée Minus White (1943), Jackie Landry Jackson (May 22, 1941 – December 23, 1997) and Lois Harris (1940). They derived their name from that of Jane Frances de Chantal.

Family Photo
This is from when I played Curse of Strahd. I played as Bobbette, a little goblin girl being raised by kenkus. Her parents go missing and she winds up on the adventuring team with a caretaker, hoping to find her folks and avoid vampires. She was so cute and incredibly fun to play! I miss her and the team!

'I can't stop crying': Cape Breton woman whose brother died following ER visit wants answers
Valerie Bobbett is demanding answers after her brother died following a visit to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital’s emergency department in Sydney, N.S.
Bobbett says her brother, 57-year-old James Hayes, was in severe pain when he first went to the ER in October and told the doctor it was on a scale higher than 10.
She says an X-ray was performed and he was sent home when nothing was found.
“’I’m going to send you home with gravol,’ -- gravol! Not even a painkiller,” Bobbett says. “He kept saying, ‘it feels like my stomach is being ripped apart.’ He never paid any attention to him. It was awful, absolutely awful.”
She says the pain continued for two weeks and became unbearable, so Hayes returned to the hospital.
A CT scan was performed, and Bobbett was there for the diagnosis.
“’We hate to deliver this news, its terrible news, but your bowel is dead and you can't live without a bowel.’ He looked up with me with those little blue eyes and started to cry,” she says.
Hayes died Oct. 25.
Bobbett feels her brother wasn't given the proper care, and now wants Nova Scotia Health to open an investigation into his death.
She wishes she had pushed doctors harder.
“I can't stop crying, I don't sleep, and it’s just awful. It's like I helped kill my brother,” she added.
In an email to CTV News Wednesday, a spokesperson for Nova Scotia Health said: "Due to privacy legislation we are unable to discuss specifics, however, as soon as we became aware of this situation we started a review of this person’s case. We attempted to reach the family to discuss and have asked they contact patient relations."
“So many people are telling me they had misgivings with that hospital and they'd rather never go there again, so it has to be stopped. Somebody has to do something,” said Bobbett.

In Baltimore City, MD: 8 y/o fearful, owner surrendered Dachshund mix is looking to decompress in rescue - BARCS, Baltimore MD
Bobbette- 8 years, altered female, 15lbs
8-year-old Bobbette was surrendered to our shelter due to no fault of her own. Her former family noted that she likes belly rubs and cuddles, and has reportedly done well with children in the home, who she would enjoy playing outside with.
Unfortunately- though understandably- Bobbette has been quite fearful since arriving in our shelter's care. During surrender, she ended up getting loose from her leash and did snap at staff when they attempted to catch her. To note, though, she did fine for most of her intake exam with slow movements and food encouragement, and let vets know that she'd had enough when they went to do the last vaccine, so she was wrapped in a towel to finish the exam.
On a formal behavior evaluation, Bobbette was slightly avoidant for leashing, but again did okay with slow movements. She has been mostly aloof when outside on walks, but has initiated contact with her handler once they sit down or get down on her level.
For the time being, Bobbette has been moved into a quiet staff office to hopefully decompress, but we think getting into a patient home would be ideal for her.
Due to her current behavior, Bobbette is not available for adoption through BARCS and can only be placed with an approved partner rescue.
Please let us know if your organization can help!
Thank you,
