Halloween Blogging #1

So I’m trying to get back in to theme blogging and what better theme for October than Halloween, Tumblr’s national holiday.

I’ve decided to start with television and the latest season of American Horror Story.

American Horror Story has been a staple of my Halloween viewing for the last few years, I usually hold off of watching it and then binge on the 31st.

However this year I’ve started early.

American Horror Story has featured killer clowns, evil doctors, demon babies, ghosts and witches to name but a few and although it’s made me jump a few times I’ve never actually been scared…until now.

What exactly is the cause of my fear in AHS Cult, I hear you ask? 

Masked invaders? No, brutal murders? Nah

It’s actually the close up shot of holes…honest.

Scared is probably the wrong word, but I instantly become incredibly uncomfortable, get goose bumps and have a sudden urge to destroy whatever it is I’ve seen, I literally have to close my eyes for the intro lol.

It’s called trypophobia and if it makes you uncomfortable like me, whatever you do don’t google it.  My work mates find it hilarious and have often promised to leave crumpets on my desk for me to find, bunch of bastards :p

To be honest I find it hilarious myself, of all the things to possibly trigger me off its freaking holes.

Apart from the holes, I’m really enjoying the show this year!

I have also watched the film ‘Paris Is Burning’ (directed by Jennie Livingston, released in 1992) and I am currently watching the TV series ‘POSE’ (created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Fulchuk & Steven Canals, aired 2018 – present); Both texts are focused on the ballroom culture of New York City in the 1980s. These texts have inspired my initial ideas for the major project.

I would like to work on campaign design against current LGBTQI exclusion, with emphasis on LGBTQI people of colour and other groups of the community that aren’t commonly depicted by the media or in film and TV. My current objective is to find/produce an event, likely an arts exhibition/clubbing event/organisation meeting, for which I can create a set of design materials including poster advertisements, stationery, tote bags, pamphlets and other accessories which may contribute to awareness of the event and related issues the organiser is willing to promote. This event will likely be targeted at a young audience — to educate the less knowing of LGBTQI history — although I may be incorrect, as the subject matter is clearly one that is very inclusive of age, gender and sexuality.
