TV Guide's The 20 Best TV Performances of 2023: Phil Dunster
14. Phil Dunster, Ted Lasso
The bright, shining light of Ted Lasso's often tedious third season was Phil Dunster. His cocksure footballer Jamie Tartt was introduced as a preening maverick on the field and a narcissistic dimwit in the locker room, which gave the comedically gifted Dunster solid material to work with. However, in Season 3, he was given the opportunity to explore the depths hiding under the "ICON" hat. As Jamie tested his capacity for empathy (pronounced empatheh) and accepted that even skilled athletes have room for improvement, Dunster peeled back each new layer with humor and sensitivity. He injected Ted Lasso's moments of corny earnestness with enough genuine humanity to render them charming, and he proved a delightful foil for Brett Goldstein's cranky Roy Kent, making their odd couple dynamic a season highlight. The reinvention of Jamie Tartt was no small feat, but Dunster convinced us he could've done it in his sleep. - Allison Picurro

I was so ill-prepared for Brett Goldstein’s total deadpan delivery of “What a fucking dork” (after Trent explains why Total Football will work) that I did an honest to God spit take.
Thank God it was only a sip of water because I don’t think my boyfriend knows how to do the Heimlich maneuver, LOL.
The last time that the writing got me to laugh that hard was the iconic “I spoke to the owner of The Sun”/“You SPOKE to God?!” exchange way back in season 1.

Sleepless in Richmond: Ted Lasso is a Classic Rom-Com
We've all seen 2x05 'Rainbow' and pointed enthusiastically at the screen when we recognized a rom-com reference. That episode was purposely packed full of them to remind you that Ted Lasso is the best football rom-com Nora Ephron never wrote.
The cultural imprint left by those classic 80s & 90s films we know and love, that same storytelling DNA, is present in everyone's favorite slow burn hit. The reason those movies still resonate with us is the pure and simple fact that, at their heart, they focus on raw human connection. They don't shy away from the ugly and sad parts of life. That's what makes the characters so well-rounded, so recognizable.
Ted Lasso is, at its heart, a show about raw human connection and the good, bad and ugly parts of the lives we lead.
So, how exactly does Ted Lasso mirror the iconic work of Nora Ephron beyond the things we see in 'Rainbow'? Read on...
What we think of as fate is just two neuroses knowing that they are a perfect match.
In Sleepless in Seattle, Sam Baldwin, a man who has just lost his wife, moves across the country with his young son and finds love again with the help of radio host Doctor Marcia Fieldstone.
Ted Lasso, a man who is in the midst of divorcing his wife, leaves the life he knew with Michelle and their young son Henry to move to London and coach a football team. Later, with the help of Doctor Sharon Fieldstone, Ted's growth is evident, and by the end of the second season, we find him more open to the idea of maybe - just maybe - falling in love again.
The first time we met, we hated each other...
There are multiple references to the movie which in my opinion (and also Brett Goldstein's) is the greatest rom-com of all-time - When Harry Met Sally. That infamous question "can a man and a woman every really be 'just friends'?" threads through every single interaction between Ted and Rebecca.
From the moment Rebecca meets Ted, she hates him. She goes out of her way to find small, petty reasons to justify her annoyance, knowing deep down - as we eventually see - that she never really hated him at all.
Then, there are the biscuits.
In a moment that mirrors Sally's performance that shocks Harry at Katz's Deli, Rebecca sinks into her seat and moans as she takes a bite of one of Ted's now-famous shortbread biscuits.
Ted sits in Sharon's office, staring glumly at the drinking bird on the desk. Just like Harry.
Ted sits alone in his apartment, thinking about his failed relationship while throwing tiny plastic darts at a tiny dartboard. Just like Harry throwing playing cards into a bowl in his empty apartment.
The 'semantic satiation' scene mirrors Harry and Sally's stroll through the MoMA in which (ingeniously improvised) he asks her to "partake of my pecan pie'" The back and forth between Ted and Rebecca over the word 'plan' holds the same amount of joyful tension, and it's incredibly fun to watch.
It only took three months...twelve years and three months.
Early in season one, Ted holds the door open for Rebecca. He doesn't realize how far down the hallway she really is. So he waits.
"That's a long time to wait, Ted."
“Well, I respect you didn’t hurry.”
Will season three be Ted and Rebecca's very own twelve years and three months? It certainly feels like we've been waiting that long.

I just feel overall confused and frustrated with Roy&Keeley plot this season. Like why are all the seemingly important conversations happening off screen? It would be nice not to have to do mental gymnastics trying to figure out the mindset of Roy/Keeley every time they interact. What was the point of her obviously pining over him all season just to start the “we should be friends” talk in Jamie’s bedroom. Why give us a reconciliation (?) last episode then have them be awkward friends this episode without any conversation in between. And granted I love subtlety and nuance, but this plot is giving me whiplash. Please give me hope for Roy Keeley endgame.
Do you really want my opinion? I think the show created an iconic couple in the first two seasons and absolutely ruined them for no good reason in S3. I'm really sad about this as I think they've done a great disservice to both characters and both actors.
Having said that, based on the last episode, I am guessing Keeley doesn't want it to seem like she just jumped into yet another relationship, and she wants time to be on her own and judge whether she can trust Roy again. She has been hurt a lot this year, so I get it.
Do I think they are endgame? Yes. I still have faith, believe it or not. I think we are all Dani watching them on movie night, we are all the team, we are Beard and Ted, we are Bruce at the Chelsea game, we are Rebecca and we are Phoebe... and yes, I think we are Jamie, because at this point, everyone, including Jamie knows they are meant to be together.
My only real worry? I think there will be another season of the show and this is why they "postponed" Roy & Keeley's true arcs, and IF that happens, maybe, just maybe, they will tease us. (I don't think that will happen though because Brett Goldstein said that viewers would be satisfied with the ending. I still trust him with that. I hope I'm not deceived. Also, while I don't have a specific spoiler regarding their endgame... I have seen filming clues that have convinced me that Roy/Keeley are endgame. It's not conclusive, but it gives me more hope.) Only one more week to wait, though... and we'll all know for sure.

Rules: Post 10 of your favourite movies and tag 10 people! Thanks @glamorouspixels for the tag. I’ve actually been thinking about this of late because I’ve listening to Brett Goldstein’s podcast Films To Be Buried With. These are in the order I watched them:
1. Lord of the Rings
My favourite films of all time, based on my favourite book of all time. Also I consider them to be one very long 11.5h movie (yes, I refer to the extended editions).
2. Chicago
One of the first movie musical adaptations I ever saw, which left an indelible impression on me. To this day I could probably describe the Cell Block Tango scene shot by shot. Catherine Zeta-Jones!
3. Once Upon A Time In Mexico
This bonkers finale to Robert Rodriguez’s El Mariachi trilogy has everything. It has Antonio Banderas as a brooding guitar-playing hitman. It has peak Johnny Depp in the era when it was not weird to have a Johnny Depp phase. It has Salma Hayek looking absolutely smoking. It has Enrique Iglesias, whose guitar has a flamethrower. It has Danny Trejo! Willem Dafoe! Eva Mendes! Mickey Rourke! all playing these absolutely unhinged roles. I adore it.
4. Sin City
So there are two Rodriguez films on this list, but I don’t think I could do without either. Sin City is perhaps one of the best graphic novel screen adaptations of all time. I was obsessed with this film from quite possibly too young an age, especially with Rosario Dawson as a dominatrix with a machine gun. It’s utter pulp and I’m not sorry.
5. Brick
I maintain this high-school neo-noir with baby Joseph Gordon-Levitt is still Rian Johnson’s best film, and this is despite the fact it was so low-budget they had to fake a transition by pulling a garbage bag over the camera and then playing it in reverse. It also contains a scene with a chicken jug that will live in my heart forever.
6. Singing’ in the Rain
Do they make them like this any more? They do not. I can’t begin to pick what I love most about this - the hysterically funny script, the OT3 vibes, the fact that nearly every musical number is a colossal achievement of its own (Donald O’Connor running up the walls in Make ‘Em Laugh! The tap-dancing in Moses Supposes! Cyd Charisse in that green dress in Broadway Melody!) or even just the comic genius of Jean Hagen, which could sustain an entire film on its own.
7. Inception
This film managed somehow to be both a cinematic masterpiece and fandom catnip, which is rare. As an architecture/urbanism geek who also loves heists and devastatingly competent men in suits, I feel like this film was made for me. Also, Arthur/Eames! One of my all-time ships.
8. 28 Days Later
Best second-generation zombie film, for my money - both stunningly shot and horrifying. The way the final mansion massacre is filmed while John Murphy’s soundtrack builds on that eerie four-note crescendo - chills. Also, young Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris! really the most beautiful zombie film ever.
9. The Maltese Falcon
I dithered over whether to put this or The Big Sleep in the bracket of “classic book-to-film noir adaptation starring Humphrey Bogart” - I love them both equally - but went with this because it is, marginally, the better film (and the better book - Raymond Chandler could write the hell out of a novel but he could not tie up his plots). It also has the fantastic villain duo of Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet, as well as a young Elisha Cook Jr as the gunsel who gets played for a sap. That ending! “If they hang you, I’ll always remember you.”
10. In the Mood for Love
This is, hands-down, the greatest film on this list. Definitely one of the greatest films ever made. Every single shot is a work of art. That iconic scene of Maggie Cheung buying noodles in a dark high-collared cheongsam, walking down a smoky alleyway swinging her tingkat to the strains of the plaintive violin of Shigeru Umebayashi’s theme, brushing past Tony Leung in his steam-rumpled suit - it gives me shivers. I’ll never be over the ending of this film. I’ll also never be normal about buying noodles.
So I’m not going to tag 10 people because I’m too tired but like talk about your favourite movies if you want to!

Thor: Love & Thunder Concept Art Highlights Jack Kirby-Inspired Hercules
Tumblr media
Marvel Studios artist Andy Park has shared concept art for Thor: Love and Thunder showcasing Brett Goldstein as Hercules.
Legendary Marvel concept artist Andy Park has revealed the official concept art for Hercules in Thor: Love and Thunder. Hercules first appeared in Marvel Comics in Journey Into Mystery Annual #1 in 1965 and since then the character has been a member of many teams in the Marvel universe including The Avengers, The Defenders, and The Heroes for Hire. The character made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the mid-credit scene of Thor: Love and Thunder played by Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein.
Hercules' costume looked right out of the comics, and that was thanks to the work of Park. Park joined the Visual Development team at Marvel Studios in 2010 and has helped design many of the iconic MCU characters. In 2015 he was promoted to Visual Development Supervisor and his work was most recently shown at D23 for the official lineup for the Thunderbolts film.
Over the years Park has been happy to share concept art for various Marvel Studios projects and he recently shared a look at the concept art for Hercules in Thor: Love and Thunder. Park shared the concept art on his Twitter citing the original Stan Lee and Jack Kirby version of the character as his inspiration. He also shared his excitement to see Hercules battle any Marvel character, although he did not specify any particular character. Check out the concept art above.
Park's comment about seeing Hercules clash with another MCU character but no specific one indicates that even the key artist at Marvel Studios is unsure about the character's future. The mid-credit scene for Thor: Love and Thunder seemed to imply a showdown between Hercules and Thor, yet currently there has been no announcement for another Thor film making Hercules MCU's future unclear. In the comics Hercules has a romantic history with She-Hulk, making him a prime candidate to appear in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law if Marvel Studios decides to renew the series for season 2.
Following the success of Werewolf by Night, Hercules could star in a Marvel Studios Special Presentation of his own. While the next Special Presentation is another holiday-themed one, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, it was recently rumored that the studio is looking at non-holiday-themed Special Presentations. This could be the perfect medium to explore more of Hercules' story following Thor: Love and Thunder and set him up for a role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
