On Kata, Pedagogy, Artists, and Technicians

The utility of traditional kata is entirely wrapped up in the reality that the forms have no definite meaning. Like sacred writ, each generation of practitioners must renegotiate how the strings of movement are engaged.

The most refined systems of practice contain within their curriculums exemplary waza (techniques) that inform and apprise the practitioner as to the fundamental essence of the system, and from these a practitioner can approach even a small body of kata, study them, and find inspiration for life. In this way, a system need not formalize cumbersome listings of techniques into the thousands. Instead, utilizing a deductive and inferential pedagogy born of the meeting of exemplary codified waza, appropriate kata, and necessary ambiguity.

When a practitioner is taught a technique for every seeming possibility, they become martial technicians at best. When they are forced to analyze, interpret, and derive, eventually their eyes may be opened in such a way that they can in fact create, even spontaneously, and finally be appropriately called martial artists.

Samurai by John Man - Could have skipped. 2/5

All The Lovers In The Night by Meiko Kawakami - The relationships between the characters and the pivotal role light plays throughout the book made me feel like I was floating. 5/5

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong - Domestic, painful, beautiful. 5/5

The Analects by Confucius - I read this to a parrot I was looking after; one of the most strangely dark academia things I've done. 4/5

Red, White And Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston - As sugary sweet as the opening cake. 4/5

Boy Parts by Eliza Clark - Good in its own right, but calling it the 'female American Psycho' does a disservice to both books. 3/5

Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart - Bound to be one of the most depressing books I'll read this year. 4/5

Three Assassins by Kotaro Isaka - Pop art violence; the ending makes everything wrap up so neatly. 4/5

after reading both ninjago and tnmt fics I can conclude that a lot of you don't actually know what you're talking about when it comes to kata and sparring

i'm so honored to call this my first ever zine (and in turn the first time i've ever seen my work in print !!!!)

Marle & Squares

♀️ | Dissessembly Drone

♂️ | Worker Drone | AbsoluteSolver

Marle came from another planet, and was also once a worker drone.

In her previous life, she was a general of an army, particularly one of the armies that fought in a great war long ago.

In one battle, however, Marle became badly injured. It wasn't exactly fatal, but she could not be out on the field because of it.

She was fortunate enough to become repaired, although upgraded into a dissessembly drone like some of her fallen fellow soldiers. Her army eventually won the war.

The large text on the band on her leg, which has been there since she had become a dissessembly drone, reads "分解ドローン マール" (Bunkai (Dissessembly) Drone Marle). There are some smaller text displaying some additional information (hence, the small lines on the band).

Following the war, Marle retired from the army and hid from society where she would eventually create Squares.

Squares got the AbsoluteSolver a while after his creation. Marle makes sure that it won't fully corrupt him.

The right side of Squares' visor is broken due to an accident involving other disassembly drones some time before he and his sister fled to the planet my AU is set.

Thanks to the visor damage, his vision became impaired. Following this, Marle had to code him to recognize her with the green band on her leg.

His messages display on the left side of his visor, again due to the visor damage.

Squares speaks entirely in Japanese. While Marle speaks English, the two of them can understand each other.

Marle is quite protective of Squares when it comes to other dissessembly drones. Even when the drone(s) in question are benevolent, she's not exactly known for friendly first impressions when it comes to meeting dissessembly drones.

Even after they left their birth (creation?) planet, they still live in seclusion due to Squares having the AbsoluteSolver.

Marle, alongside the disassembly drones that were in her army, are immune to sunlight, which disassembly drones are normally weak to.

The concept of MD!Squares and MD!Marle were created by @squares-the-cosmosrectangle, alongside the lore for Squares (I did the lore for Marle) and most of the design.
