A How-To Guide for Mastodon!

What is Mastodon? - It is a social network that is decentralized and part of the Fedivese.

Okay, but what's the Fediverse? - The fediverse is an ensemble of federated (i.e. interconnected) servers that are used for web publishing (i.e. social networking, microblogging, blogging, or websites) and file hosting, but which, while independently hosted, can communicate with each other.

Essentially, what "decentralized" means, is that each server in Mastodon (called "instances") is interconnected to be able to talk to each other on any instance but also each instance is a sort of micro-community of similar interests and/or values that can be managed as a smaller community within the Fediverse.

So, how do I use this? It sounds complicated! - It honestly does sound complicated and it's easy to get overwhelmed at first, but what new technology doesn't when you first look at it?

Let's take a look at signing up first! (long post I'm sorry, but I try to break things down as understandable as possible with pictures!)

*Note - this information is up-to-date for 4.0 version on Tuesday, November 15, 2022

So, first thing you might see when searching up how to join Mastodon is that there's tons of instances (or, servers) that you can create an account with. I'd recommend first looking at the official server page found here to see what kind of options you have! The biggest thing to keep in mind is that this list is absolutely NOT exhaustive and there are many, many more options than are listed. Ones that are even more exclusive to interests or cultures or other groups! You can search up your special interests in Google to see if there's a Mastodon server that is currently taking applications or are open to all account creations. Alternatively, you can use something like this instance helper in order to find an instance that is more geared towards your values and interests. Once you choose your instance and go to sign up, it'll look similar to this. As you can see, there's two links under the normal boxes for username and passwords and such.

Most, if not every, instance (worth their salt, I might add) has a list of rules and TOS that must be agreed to when you sign up. Please make sure you read these carefully as these instances are very serious about moderation.

Let me show you an example of what the rules list and terms look like from my instance (mastadon.lol)

This is all located on mastodon.lol About page. While your instance won't look exactly like this it may appear similar with the dropdown and explanation of everything you might need to know.

Now that you've read all the TOS and Rules, you're ready to click the "I agree" checkbox and create your account!

Now that we've created the account which is, arguably the hardest part, let's jump to see what your home page looks like and what all the buttons do!

Down the center of the page is your "home feed", in which anyone you are following, their posts will show up there, also anything that people you follow have boosted (boosted, in this case, means "reblogged" or "retweeted"). One of the biggest differences between Mastodon and other socials is that your Favourites (which are akin to "Likes") will never show up on other people's pages and do not affect any type of algorithm. It's just for you to Fav and the writer will see the notif you Faved their Toot (which is what we call the posts and yes, we know it's silly, but calling posts on Twitter "tweets" was also silly) and that's it (well, plus the little feel-goods that someone saw and liked it enough to favourite it!)

On the top left is the Search bar. That's one of the best ways to find people and topics you're interested in! Mastodon relies on a generous use of hashtags in your toots. You can also use the search in order to find people directly by their @ and server name!

Under the search bar, it's your handle and a quick dropdown under the three dots to ceartain pages (such as follower requests or editing your profile or muted words, etc).

Finally the last spot on the top left is box where you write your toots. Going clockwise from top left, there's where you start your toot, then ou've got your emoji picker on the top right of the box (including special, server-specific added emojis), bottom right is your character count which updates in realtime so you see how much more you can write, and then there's a slew of buttons on the bottom left: (from right to left as is clockwise) Language picker, Content Warning (creates a bar above your toot that you can explain what cw's there are), privacy levels (Public, Unlisted, Followers Only, and Mentioned People Only), Poll maker, and finally the Upload for pics/gifs/vids.

Now we focus on the right side of the screen:

We'll focus on the top portion in a minute.

At the bottom are the top 3 hashtags trending and roughly how many people (only in your instance) are talking about it.

Just above the trending section is your "Preferences" button. That will take you to your Preferences & Settings page which will have all the sliders and bells and whistles to customize your Mastodon experience to your liking. That might become another post but it is too much for this guide which is just an introduction.

Now we focus on the part that really seems to confuse people (including me when I started) - the whole top right section

So at the top, is your Home button, as previously stated, this is the feed in which you'll see everything from people you follow and whatever toots they boost.

Underneath we have your Notifications tab where you can see who follows you, who favourites your toots, who boosts them, and any replies or mentions of you.

Then we have the Explore tab, as indicated by the little picture to the left of the word, this is where you can see what is going on. There are 4 tabs at the top of the page when you click it

Posts is all trending posts and boosted posts that are gaining traction on your instance. The Hashtags tab is similar but more like a top 10 of trending hashtags from all over Mastodon. News is what is being talked about by people on this and other servers of the decentralized network right now (kinda like Google News page which links to official news sources and websites). Finally, the For You is just a list of people who you might potentially want to check out and see if you want to follow!

Next we're going to talk about the following two tabs: Local and Federated. The Local tab will show you posts from just your instance you are on, it's a slightly more isolated feed of just people who share your interests. The Federated tab is a bit more of a free-for-all because it shows posts from all over the Fediverse, all different Mastodon servers will throw up posts as fast as it can (but don't worry, somewhere in preferences is an option for "slow mode", though with how many people are on Mastodon now, slow might still be too fast for some people).

Direct Message tab is pretty straight forward. It's where your private messages between other users go.

Favourites, Bookmarks, and Lists; all important all do different things. Favourites is the place where any post that you like goes to, as said before, it doesn't do anything to the algorithm, it doesn't mean your post will get shown to others when they get favourited, it's just a nice feel-good moment that someone showed appreciation to your post, that they vibe with you in that moment. Bookmarks are very different in that no one will ever be alerted when you bookmark a toot, they are there for you to refer back to when you need to so I would recommend being more selective about what you bookmark and periodically clean up your bookmarks tab. Lists are super important in that you can create lists for different categories of topics or users that you want to see at a given moment: have a Twitch list, an Art/Artist list, a Sex Worker list, etc! Lists will allow you to scroll through those feeds individually so you won't have things that don't pertain to what you want to check out at that moment.

I have a whole slew of tips to give out but this post has gone long enough. I hope that this helped you and anyone you chose to share this with understand one of the biggest growing new social media on the internet right now.

The OTW/AO3 Election is over

and I am going to mute my notifications now.

The OTW has weathered worse than what people were scared of (like an entire Board of Directors being actively hostile to the volunteers: https://fanlore.org/wiki/OTW_2015_Board_Election or this reddit write-up) and AO3 still carried on as usual (this was 2015. I noticed nothing and I was using AO3 religiously at the time).

I won't deny that there were valid worries and concerns raised during this election, but as I've stated many, MANY times, what I am tired of seeing is overblown, exaggerated, and misinformed concerns.

We're all going to be fine, and AO3 is going to be fine. The intense response and scrutiny we had the last few days only proves that the system works. It was a good stress test and the results were positive.

There's nothing more I can add.

My #1 post of 2022

So this OTW Election drama is getting out of hand...

I see a lot of panic and fearmongering, and I think some facts need to be stated to help put things into perspective.

The OTW, which operates AO3, has yearly elections for the Board of Directors. This is position which is occupied by SEVEN PEOPLE total. You can see the members of the current board here: https://www.transformativeworks.org/board-directors/

The entire Board of Directors works together to oversee the OTW as a whole. They cannot and also do not oversee the details of day-to-day operations, such as your tags being wrangled, or keeping track of donations, or responding to support tickets, or keeping the servers working, etc. (https://elections.transformativeworks.org/what-the-board-does/)

Therefore, ONE person being elected to the Board will not be able to completely shift the direction and goals of the OTW as a whole. You would need a 4 person majority at the very least, and the maximum number of seats up for election in any year is usually 3.

The requirements for running for the Board are fairly simple: 9 months in the previous year as a volunteer (everyone in the OTW, including Board members, are volunteers), not being in the Elections committee, being a legal adult, and being a paying member (basically the same as being a voter in the election). There is no nomination process or any sort of internal popularity contest at play here. Any views being expressed by a candidate therefore doesn't mean anything about the OTW's culture internally as a whole.

There is a period of time before the election where all eligible voters get emails at the same email address they will send the ballots to, with instructions to a mock-up page of the ballot so that people can work out technical issues if needed. People who need accommodations for any reason are also able to request them during this period weeks before the election. So asking for a "tech testing" period before the election happens is... pointless. It's already there!

Asking for more "screening" of candidates is reasonable on the surface, but the truth is, it could be ripe for abuse by people in charge of the process. Sure, perhaps the people who put these rules into place won't use the process badly, but who's to say nobody will ever be tempted to do so? It could lead to a Board and Elections Committee that works together to keep new ideas and changes in the OTW from ever coming to fruition. Just imagine the Board of Directors we hate in movies: old white men in suits who never want anything to change, and only let in people who are just like them. Also -- the reason we have elections AT ALL is so everyone gets a voice in how the OTW will run.

This isn't like the US Election (or British, or wherever you are) where your vote is one drop in an ocean of millions. The OTW and AO3 are actually not that big in the wider world, and that means each vote counts more. Also, the ranked voting system means peoples' votes can count towards their second- or third-favourite candidate, or so on. It's not all or nothing here!

I know a lot of people are worried seeing what seems like anti views coming from "within" the OTW itself, but it is still one person out of hundreds. People are always going to have varying opinions; the GOOD thing is that people are voting against opinions that they don't agree with. That means the voting process is working.

There is a conversation to be had, perhaps, about changing some policies and requirements for candidates and members future elections. But right now? Breathe.

There is no risk of the AO3 censoring and banning fic overnight, even if you personally cannot vote this year. After all, the candidates weren't revealed until after everyone donated, and we know antis would never give AO3 their money.

(And for the conspiracists out there: ballot-stuffing is not 100% impossible, but EXTREMELY UNLIKELY. You would need to have paid 10$ donations for HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of fake people (which is $$$$) months in advance and also set up hundreds/thousands of email accounts for all these fake people, or for real people with nefarious aims. The reason we know the moon landing wasn't faked is because that many people could not have realistically kept a secret for that long. We would have heard whispers about it. The same applies here. This entire debacle came out of left field over the course of a few days!

And all that work, for ONE member who can't unilaterally change anything? Please.)

You were scrolling through twitter, waiting for the announcing of teams. It was your first time ever playing. You played some minecraft but that wasn't all you played, you played other games too. After a few hours of scrolling, you finally got a notification.

You heard Clay running to your room from the kitchen. He knocks on your door and you let a out a soft 'come in.' "Did you see the announcment for the MCC?" "I did, I'm pretty excited!" you say enthusiastically.

You weren't as skilled as Clay but you were excited nonetheless.

It was finally November 8. You were just sitting on your desk staring at your monitor. 'What if I mess up? What if we lose? What if-' All these thoughts were racing your mind. You started bouncing your leg, something you do when you get nervous, and you bit your lip.

Clay was walking past your room when he saw your nervous state. He walked up to you, kneeled beside you, and started rubbing your back. "Are you alright? Do you want some water?"

"I don't want any water" you were still bouncing your leg, but the speed had decreased. "Well, are you alright? You look nervous" "I'm fine, just nervous 'cause this is my first time playing in the MCC and all that" his face softens. "You'll do great! I promise." You look at him and smile.

He kisses your cheek before he gets up and walks to the door and he send you a smile before closing the door behind him.

You boot up Minecraft and sighed, "I hope I do do great."

You were on the last game and you were praying that it wasn't Build Mart and it was gonna be Sands of Time. If you get Sands of Time, you might be able to get into top 3, maybe even first place. Red Rabbits was currently on 5th place. You were having fun but you were still stressed about it.

You and your team were about to vote until you got dunked by the team beside you. You look over to the side to see Orange Ocelots, which consisted of Tommy, Smajor, Wisp, and Quackity. They were all crouching and jumping. Tommy joins the call for a few seconds, "Fuck you bitch!" he says in a sing-song voice. You all burst into laughter. But it wasn't long 'till you looked back to your screen and it read 'Sands of Time.'

"Look guys it's Sands of Time! We might still win this." Niki says excitedly.

"Dose anyone got any sand? I need it." You were currently watching the timer while the others were getting sand for you.

"Yeah I have some. Here." Fundy hands you 7 sand. "Thanks" "How many do you have now?" he starts running back into one of the tunnels he went into before. "Uhmm I have 9 sand." "Okay great"

You were now collecting sand because the one that Fundy gave you earlier ran out. You were running around trying to get sand and heard Niki in the call, "Y/n, help me please I just died." So you ran over to her, freed her from the tomb, and continued getting more sand.

Clay spoke, "Hey how much time we got left?" You glance back at the timer and it read '20.' "Oh shit it's at 20-"

You ran back to the timer to place sand. When you got to the timer, it went down to 10. You placed all the sand you had left and it went back up to 50. "It's at 50 now, we're good."

You just finished Sands of Time and were waiting for the other teams to finish. You were just talking about the earlier games and random things before all the teams finished.

When the scores were counted again, you ended up in 4th place. Not too bad, but could've done better. You and your team were super proud since it was your first time playing.

Green Gaurdians and Purple Pandas were now dueling it out. All the teams were screaming and betting who would win.

You were screaming and cheering but you saw Clay going on mute. You didn't want to be nosy but you were curious on whet he was doing. "Hey guys I just have something real quick." You muted yourself and got up.

Right when you grabbed onto your door knob, Clay opens the door before you. You let out a yelp while he flinches.

"What the hell?" "Sorry, I just wanted to check up on you." he says nonchalantly and giggles.

"So how are you doing? Are you feeling better now than earlier?" "Yeah. I still feel like we couldv'e done better." you said in a lighthearted manner to hide the fact that you were disappointed. But Clay knew you too well.

He smiles and cups your face with both of his hands. "It's okay. Even if you're a little disappointed, you still did good considering it's your first time playing." You remove his hands from your face and hold them. "Thank you, I really needed that." You give him a peck on his cheek then to his lips. "Let's go back, they're probably wondering where we are."

When you got back, they were still fighting, but Green Gaurdians was in the lead. After a few minutes, they came out victorious.

Niki ended her stream and left call because she said that she was tired. You, Fundy, Dream, George, and Smajor just stayed in call for a bit longer just chatting.

"Welp, I'm gonna rest now bye everyone!" bye's and goodbye's erupted from the call. You ended the stream and went to Clay's room.

"Are you still streaming?" you whisper. "Nope, just finished." he turns off his computer and looks at you. "Great! Wanna watch a movie with me and Patches?" "Sure, I'll be down in a bit." you kiss his nose and go downstairs to ready a movie.

When You Understand [Chp. 1]

"Are you ready to be proven wrong about country songs, Jeong?"

Jaehyun and Johnny started their intro music for their radio show, affectionately called the JohnJae show, listened to most college kids on nights where partying wasn't an option and no one wanted to study for Professor Edgerton's mid-term tomorrow.

"Country songs don't mean anything," Jaehyun annoyingly adjusted his headphones, reading the text from Apple, his best friend since childhood who earned the nickname from him for falling out of an apple tree during recess in the first grade.

Taking a look at the playlist for the night, Jaehyun leaned back in his chair in disappointment. Johnny smiled at the distaste in his friend's stance, unmuting his mic at the last notes of their intro.

"Hello, Campus of SM University, I hope y'all are ready for some boot-scooting, honky tonky loving because it's all about that banjo tonight. Let's start with a classic from Miss Swift, shall we? I remember when I was fifteen. I was elbow deep in a bag of hot cheetos at Hot Topic."

"Oh my God, do you know what song is playing?"

It's Taylor Swift Fifteen, what about it?"

Jaehyun and Y/N made their way through the mall, bags of goodies, treats and totally not-stolen-from-the-checkout candies. Jaehyun's denim jacket was tied around Y/N's waist as one of her headbands from Clarie's adorned his head.

"Oh, excuse me, Mr. Too Good for Country. Hello, we're about to go into high school! This is fate, this is gonna be our year," Y/N's excitement was infectous, people walking by the pair smiling, one lady even mentioning how happy the young couple looked.

"It's just a song," Jaehyun took a sip of Y/N's slushie, narrowingly avoiding being hit by a granny revving her scooter, "that's it."

"It's not just a song," Y/N walked into JCPenney's, a pastel pink prom dress catching her eye, "it's so much more than that. Everyone can relate to a country song."

Resting his chin on the stand, Jaehyun tilted his head at Y/N, "Not me and you have to be kidding? Pastels?"

"What, you don't want to wear pink to prom?"

"Who says we're gonna go together?"

A barely noticable sigh came out of Y/N's lips, her smile faltering a little bit as Jaehyun mentally debates if she was sad that he said that.

"Maybe I'll go with Johnny," playfully running off, Y/N left Jaehyun shaking his head in amazement at his best friend, Taylor Swift still playing in the background.

'And Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind.'

"Alright, Apple," Y/N groaned at the years-old nickname, Jaehyun laughing before putting his hands up in defense of her playful fist, "if country songs are true, promise me you won't give everything to someone who's going to fuck you over."

"You can't really promise that," seeing Jaehyun's pinkie extending from the handles of the bags, Y/N twisted her pinkie around his.

"But I'll try."

"Jaehyun!"

Jaehyun shook his head, coming back into focus as Johnny pointed the screen. The song was almost over and Jaehyun had to share a story. Johnny switched on their mics before queueing up a commercial.

"Now we have a bet going on here at the JohnJae radio show. Jaehyun doesn't believe that country songs are really the Mistress of Fate coming to wrap her hands around our throats and choke us with how somber li-"

"Okay, Seo, don't go too dramatic, we still need viewers to keep the air time. I'm just saying that I've never had an experience with a country song that made me think 'Wow, this is literally me right now.' It's just pop music with some banjo and a southern accent."

Johnny laughed into the microphone, his finger over the play button, "is that why you were zoned out during 'Fifteen?' Who were you thinking of?"

Kicking his friend's leg, Jaehyun changed the topic, "We would like to hear about your stories, try to convince me fate, soulmates, love at first sight and honky-tonking boot-scooting boogies are real."

"So call us in at the radio station and ask to be on the JohnJae Show, send us a DM on Instagram or Snapchat and we'll try to get to as many as possible," Hitting the play button, Johnny took off his headphones, "we're gonna play some commercials after this song. Here's Lauren Alaina's 'Queen of Hearts'."

Muting their mics, both of the boys leaned back in their seats, Jaehyun checking his texts, no notifications from Y/N.

"We literally just started the show and you're already checking to see if she texted? Do you two have a pre-show ritual where you text until the very last second for good luck?"

"Yeah, we do, but then she normally texts a string of heart emojis after the first song," Jaehyun allowed a small sigh to escape his lips as a slight smile appeared on his face.

"You're whipped for her," Johnny's face now had a toothy grin plastered on it, "I knew it!"

"I am not!"

"I could tell even when me and her were together, bro," Johnny slid on his headphones again, leaving one ear uncovered as he scrolled through the questions, comments and stories, "you're whipped and she's your country song."

"No, she's not," Jaehyun threw his phone to the side before getting ready to answer some questions, "she's on a date right now with that guy from our public speaking class, Seonghwa?"

Johnny nodded, putting on his radio voice before Jaehyun zoned out again, his facial expression unreadable as he checked his phone again, no new message.

Maybe she is.

So it's Heidi's birthday (April Fool's Day, fitting for a fool like her), and of all people she thanked for birthday wishes, she thanked "Over The Anger Limit", a twitter account dedicated to talking shit about her ex Projared. It's funny to me because she's showing everyone that she's been seeing tweets from that account slamming her ex while tagging her, giving her a notification on the tweets. The other Heidi blogs talked about this a bit but I wanted to know your opinion?

It honestly shows just how cowardly those blogs really are. I'm going to start by saying I do not in any way support ProJared, I cannot forgive someone that used his fans to beef up his personal porn collection. I need to say that again because the rest of what I say in this post is going to sound like I'm on his side when I'm very much not.

Over The Anger Limit has been regularly posting jabs and attacks at Jared for well over a year, many of those tweets have Heidi directly tagged, which like you said the tag would send a notification to Heidi. Unless, of course, she blocked or muted the account, which I always assumed she did if she was giving no response to them. But now she's proven she never blocked/muted the account and had been reading these tweets the entire time.

The other blogs are jumping through hoops to downplay this as literally nothing to note, but while it's not some mega ultra huge deal, we can now say with certainty all of Heidi's claims to have "moved on from the divorce" or that seeing anything about her ex is "traumatic" and "triggering" to her has been all lies when she's actively reading tweets from an account that not only is dedicated to talking about the ex that "traumatized Heidi" while sending those tweets straight to her notifications but is just as terrible as she is at "moving on" from 2019. But the other blogs aren't talking about this since they're shaking in fear because Heidi's whiteknights might read it and yell at them. Those blogs are anonymous, it's not like they're getting doxxed like other people that criticized Heidi in the past.
