Plurality in Homestuck

Homestuck is an exceptionally plural piece of media, though I doubt it was supposed to be. In this meta I will examine multiple examples of both literal plurality and plural vibes. Examples of literal plurality are ones that fit the definition of plurality that I will give below. Plural vibes are characters or sets of characters that don’t fit the definition for one reason or another, but still have echoes of plural experiences

So what is plurality? It’s any experience of being more than one in a single body. This could be more than one person, part, alter, headmate, facet, etc. This group of [insert preferred descriptor] is often referred to as a system. Dissociative Identity Disorder is included under this umbrella, but it’s not the only type of plurality that exists. This site has a good basic overview if you’re new to the concept. I will also link to the definitions of some terms that might be unfamiliar

Now, on to the actual meta

Actual Plurality

The Cherubs

This is the most obvious example. Calliope and Caliborn, like all cherubs, begin life by sharing a body. They trade control of the body (switching) and have obviously different personalities, interests, and hobbies. They share a body, but it would be impossible to (successfully) argue that they’re the same person. They clearly fit the definition of plurality

In terms of whether this is good rep for plurals, I’m honestly going to have to say no. It falls into the trope of the “evil alter”, which is the most damaging media trope about plurality. The evil, murderous system member steals the body from the good, kind one to commit heinous acts? That’s textbook. And don't get me wrong, I’m glad Calliope gets away from Caliborn, but it sucks that she only gets to be happy as a singlet

Sprites Squared and Twice-Protoyped Sprites

This category contains sprites squared, like Davepeta and Jasprose, but also any sprite who was prototyped with two different sentient beings like ARquius, Fefeta, Erisol, etc. We see from their interactions with others that while they’re no longer two separate people, they’re not fully integrated either. They frequently make comments about how one half of them feels differently about something than the other, or talk about themselves as having multiple parts with different opinions. For example, Davepeta talks about having strong gendered feelings from both Nepeta and Dave, and is surprised that neither part of them is conflicted about being attracted to Karkat. ARquius also repeatedly expresses a strong (hah) opinion and then immediately adds something along the lines of “but also the other half of me doesn’t care”. This all feels very indicative of being a median system, an experience sometimes described as being “more than one, but less than two”. A median system is any system that falls in between being a singlet (one person in one body) and having fully separate system members, AKA being multiple. In my opinion, these sprites fit that definition

Plural Vibes

Dirk, Hal, and Other Splinters

In terms of characters that have plural vibes without being literally plural, these guys take the cake. The concept of Heart players and their splinters is very plural in and of itself, but we also see specific dynamics play out between them that are very plural. While Dirk and Hal don’t technically share a body, they functionally interact with the world in a very similar way. Since Hal is literally Dirk’s shades, they’re always together, much in the same way that two co-conscious headmates would be. They also share a pesterchum account, and have to take certain steps to make sure their friends know who they’re talking to at any given point. This is similar to how members of a system have to navigate messaging apps that don’t have accessibility options for us (shout out to pluralkit). Many systems also message back and forth the way Dirk and Hal do, if they’re struggling with internal communication. The way their friends react is also an unfortunately common experience as well. Jane doesn’t believe Hal exists, and Jake only wants to talk to the “real Dirk”. This echoes how many people don’t believe plurality exists, or prioritize the person they see as the “real one”. Hal struggles to define himself as a person separate from Dirk, and Dirk tries to control Hal so that he doesn’t ruin other people’s image of him. While that’s not a universal plural experience by any means, it’s unfortunately common for the host of a system to attempt to suppress other headmates

Dirk being able to be awake in both his apartment and on Derse has the vibes of having a liminal front. Some systems have inner worlds that a headmate can be present in while still being in the front/body. In this example, Derse would be akin to the inner world. It’s not an exact parallel, but the vibes are there

Players and Their Sprites

A number of characters end up with sprite versions of themselves. Davesprite and Jadesprite have the most plural vibes in my opinion, but the way Rose reacts to Rosesprite feels very reminiscent of discovering that you’re plural. Her crisis around not being the only Rose, and not knowing what that means for her, definitely feels like the crisis many headmates have upon learning they're not the only one living in their head

Davesprite and Dave have some of the same vibes that Dirk and Hal have. John makes a comment to Davesprite about wanting to talk to the “real Dave”, a moment I screenshotted on our recent re-read to make a joke about how singlets interact with systems. Davesprite also has issues defining himself as a person outside of Dave. The fact that they spend a lot of time apart kind of interferes with the plural analogy, but the vibes are definitely there

Dog Tier Jade

Jade and Jadesprite are very plural. For Jadesprite there’s also the same struggle to define herself that Davesprite and Hal have, though she seems very firm in being Not Jade. She has a very different personality than Jade, she’s more emotional and less upbeat. She also struggles with existing, and resents Jade for creating her (which is a fucking mood). This echoes the experiences of some tulpas and parogens, which are both headmates who were intentionally created. In this case Jadesprite was created by throwing her dreamself corpse in a kernelsprite, and doesn’t live in Jade’s head, but again, we’re just going on vibes here

When Jade god tiers, she merges with Jadesprite to become Dog Tier Jade. This echoes systems who achieve final fusion, merging into a single person, sometimes known as an empty system. Many systems who achieve final fusion remain in the plural community, and may continue to consider themselves plural

Heart, Time, and Alt Selves

The aspects of Heart and Time both deal heavily in alternate selves. Heart players have their splinters, while Time players interact frequently with their past and future selves, as well as dealing with versions of themselves from doomed timelines. Dave, Dirk, Hal, and Nepeta all show up in the examples given above at least once, and the Aradiabots could be read as plural (though admittedly that one’s a stretch). Either way, these aspects definitely have plural vibes

This isn’t an exhaustive list, and I welcome any additions from other plural folks. Though as a heads up, I don't tolerate exclusionary rhetoric. This discussion is open to and accepting of all systems. If you start shit, you’ll get blocked

Anyway, wanna give us a Bro Strider relationship status update with people he has interacted with so far in this fic?

(WARNING FROM FUTURE ME: this post is VERY long. I'm SO sorry.)

i honesty don't know where to start with this guy LOL ummmm i will be honest we could be here literally all day. it's kind of hard to get into the idea of explaining this without stating exactly how far we've come but it really has come from "my god if only i could be alone for five fucking years wow what a world" to "my god if only i could be alone for five fucking seconds jesus christ" SO. not that much of an improvement but. an improvement!

i'm going to do this in bullet points slap-dashed real quick and dirty like bc there are SO many of them (<- second note from future me this was my hubris talking) (ps i got bro meta all mixed up in there i'm so sorry)

PREFACE: i think a lot of what comes across as "gentle" early bro strider stems from like, well u know all the fucked up shit with his soul, kind of slowly reanimating from Machine to Human Again, Dirk Strider (Bro Strider) with a Purpose, a single-minded idea of how things Have to Be, to a place where "i shouldn't be here i was supposed to be done and now i'm not sure how to proceed"

not to quote my own fic but this is a lot of our starting point:

"Your technique was a major shit show.” “Yeah, I’m starting to realize that now.” “Kinda surprising you didn’t realize it sooner.” It’s not, really. “Yeah, I--” He cuts himself off and you tense up, watch the lines of his shoulders for movement. “I don’t know.”

The point here was never, "Bro Strider is an Irredeemable Monster", but it was also never going to be "Bro Strider feels bad about what he did" because to start, he most definitely fucking doesn't. LOL. I think he saw the way he raised Dave as a necessity, and that it was the most logical path to follow, and that it never mattered if either of them liked it (i don't think bro liked much of anything back then, except for puppets lmao) because it was the path of least resistance with the highest likelihood for success. (I will not get into the way homestuck sets us up like it's a master-apprentice anime joke only to shit on people about it later, because i already made that whole post abt bro and dave and shit u know.) I see him very much the way we see early Dirk Strider, before his disaster with Jake, back when he really thought that pushing his friends to be their "Best Selves" was doing them a favor. Take that as you will.

From here we see Bro change from Before (purpose) to After (lack of purpose, no sense of self) and this influenced a lot of the way i ended up writing him. Which! basically he starts defaulting to how he raised Dave before training because he has. Absolutely no fucking clue how to handle Dave now that they're not strifing anymore, now that there's no game to train for. (Bro would rather he was not anything, anymore but. we won't get into that.)

ANYWAY

Dave(no-longer-a-sprite): a lot of their relationships started as ultra guilt-based on both ends. not from the past, but really just centering the part both of them played in Bro's death. i know we don't have canon proof of bro dying for davesprite but it's my world and i say he did bc it rly does make a weird amount of sense and follows my Guardian's Obligation to Keep Their Player Alive at All Costs. yes even doomed offshoots of their kid. ANYWAY. the two of them have benefited (yikes) from Dave's struggle with depression and his desperation not to let Bro's death be his fault (even though obviously it wasn't) and just their mutually weird "i was supposed to die but now i'm here. what do i do?" Dave didn't have the same revelation as Dave about all his shit with Bro, and he never had an outlet. He just internalized. But this also leads to our first apology! wow so early on and yet there are 50+ chapters that trail after it. It's almost like I believe that saying sorry is the first step or something! Basically their relationship went from revolving around death and a lack of purpose to the first kind of tentative, actual attempt at something of a familial relationship. I can't call Dave a trial run, because that's not fair, nor is it accurate, but Dave(sprite) is a more forgiving figure due to his isolation, and is more likely (not good) to forgive Bro his slip-ups than the other Dave. Also Dave says some alarming ass shit to him and I think that was probably something of a wake-up call for him, like a call to arms or somethin'. Basically, they are trying their best. Or I think they are! :)

Dave (not a sprite and never has been, this is why we call them apple and orange fellas): His relationship takes more effort and more time. Dave has a relationship with Dirk now, that is more positive than whatever he had with Bro (obviously) and it's not like he doesn't NEED Bro, because fuckssake they're still kids (you left a good ask about this but i forgot to answer because i'm a mess) and they need guardians but they're like. These two are the EPITOME of the concept of "you can love someone and want a relationship with them even if they hurt you so bad you can never forgive them." That is their baseline. It permeates every interaction. Dave is almost never not thinking about who Bro used to be, versus the way he's changed. He's jealous of Dave(sprite, for simplicity), he's jealous of Dirk, he's jealous of Old Dave, but he doesn't know how to ask for... whatever it is he wants! Not to mention Dave now has his own personal experience with Bro dying right in front of him, or preventing his death (sort of twice, i s'pose) and having a direct hand in that gave him a weird kind of catharsis, some kind of choice he never got to make as a thirteen-year old (and wouldn't have, anyway, as he confesses at some point). They are genuinely working some shit out. I just think it'll take more time.

Mom: Wow! His best friend from a past life where he was cruel and awful but also at one point may have had feelings and emotions and could have been a person but never so much as he wanted to be, and he's definitely jealous of her, and he also knows that she is imperfect, the same way all guardians tend towards a lack of perfection, but they balance each other out. They are both what I would call "opposite sides of the extreme" if u know what I mean. He is the most comfortable with her because he does not have to pretend, and does not have to be gentle, and she will take his shit because she wants to, and he doesn't want her to, but he can sort of.... She is the first person Bro Strider trusts again, I think. Or he wants to. I think he's just now starting to realize that maybe it's not all bullshit, when people believe in him.

Nanna Egbert (and Hass I spose): Resentment for a life that he was always supposed to leave vs the first adult who ever showed him kindness vs growing up mean and crooked vs the way that she forgives, so so easily, too easily. But he wants her to be proud of him but no he doesn't but yes he does. He would probably bend over backwards for Nanna to make her smile. He would also let Hass put him in a chokehold but only as long as it would take to fucking suplex him into a table. He would never admit to these residual attachments because they are all mixed up in who he used to be, and he doesn't know yet how to separate them from who he is trying to be now.

Dirk: I am not getting into my dirk vs bro vs dirk meta but it went from: This is just me and he is not a real person because he's me so who cares what i say to him -> He is me but now i see that he is also a person who reflects who i used to be and i don't like that -> i'm embarrassed -> I understand him and he understands me to a point and i REALLY don't like that -> beginning to see Dirk as his own person mixed up with "sometimes he's Dirk, sometimes he's you". Dirk meta. we could go all day.

Rose: I already made a whole post about Bro and Rose LOL. Rose wants something from Bro. Bro feels obligated because she's related to Roxy, but it's also maybe the first outside relationship where someone knows who he is from the start and still... appears to want to know him?

Roxy: Mom Lalonde Jr. Feels weirdly comfortable with her. Or at least less likely to snap at her. Thinks she's funny. Doesn't really know how to deal with kids sometimes but he tries, with her. She's kind of the only one (outside of u know).

Alpha Rose: Absolutely Not.

The other Guardians: Amused but tolerant. Annoyed but intrigued. Willing to put up with their bullshit from a sense of obligation he cannot explain and that frustrates him (it's just because they remind him of Nanna and Hass, he swears)

Alpha Dave (flavor: Pacific Cooler): Wow. We could be here for LITERALLY all day. No one has asked for my Bro vs Alpha Dave meta. I'd rather not get into it but alpha Dave was built as a reflection of Dave's worst traits but also as more of a direct parallel to Bro. They understand each other. They don't want to understand each other. Bro has basically gone from "wow who the FUCK is this douchebag it has been so long since i have met another adult who would probably kill someone without blinking" to "i guess he's okay." That is where we are, and doesn't that speak a thousand words.

Hal: It is not Hal's fault that their first interaction went so poorly. I know we don't talk about Cal as a juju but man fucked up ARquiussprite was all mixed up in there right. What the fuck. ANYWAY i think he has reached exasperation on a Dirkesian level with Hal, but also perhaps the beginnings of "oh he's a kid" and thus we have. Gestures to all of the black text in the new chapter. Bro thinks of himself as so far removed from the identity of "Dirk Strider" that he sometimes makes decisions other people would find "bad" and "not very good". Still, Hal is a kid. He knows Hal is a kid. He can kind of tell he's a lonely kid, even if he won't admit it (because Bro was a lonely kid, once upon a time.) I think he thinks Hal is annoying. Has no qualms about blocking him without a second thought. But he won't stop him from pestering him, either! :)

Ideas I hold onto?

I think it's about time I tell more people about these than just my best friend. She has better things to do than listen to me ramble! So, you guys get to hear my fiction/fandom ideas! Yay? (Be forewarned, most of this is crossover stuff, so be aware.)

The Adventures of MegaMan: I guess I can call this my most prolific work..? It's what's got the most stuff on my DA, so yeah. The name isn't even "official"! But, it's also one of the few works that has something that covers most of it(a timeline). You want the Lalinde's? They're here. The Stardroids? Some odd neighbors! Breaker Knight, because he has potential? I haven't finished writing his thing, I admit, but he's present!

ZeroX Sleeping Beauty AU: The fic for this is still just in my Google Docs... But, I put way too much thought into this. Zero is a typical high-school student, with a younger brother(Bass), and two younger cousins(Ciel and Alouette), but ends up learning he's possibly destined to wake up the centuries-old prince Xavier of the Kingdom of Abel. Just how prevalent are the fairies that Zero's best friend, Axl, seems to know way too much about. Can he stop Sigma and break the sleeping curse?

The Techs of Circuit City: As legend goes, the three Techs are to be sought out when Circuit City gets threatened, as is the case thanks to The Wyrms. Of course, Suzume, I mean "Saori" doesn't believe a lick of it! Plus, she has to work with "Ms. Class Rep" Kayuba? Please! But, Matsu is very convincing...

Magic Roots: Life goes sideways for Conner Vidalya when he's accosted by the twisted dryad Sidae. With a ticking clock on his life and a lack of memories, "Pulcher" turns to the 6000 year old kitsune doctor Acen-Li to try and hunt down the wicked wicken before his death when his eye-that's-now-a-flower wilts.

Knowledge Flame: To get her daughter, Ashell to stop acting out, Phoebe Fragor decides to not only place a curse on the young witch, but send her to a non-magic high school to boot! Can she adapt without losing her temper?

Stunt's Hope: We're at about Alternia's 1950's, but just how is the planet to adapt when 12 trolls stumble upon a game they were never meant to find? Will secrets between the group get revealed? And just how many trolls really fulfill their ancestor's unfinished business..?

Pajama Dirk AU Aka How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Fix/Explain Ultimate!Dirk Myself: I have no intentions of ever reading The Homestuck Epilogues. But... Hussie, how do you botch your own character?!! Thus, this started as a way to make Dirk an antagonist without breaking his character and just went further from there, including Grandma English getting to be a Sprite, a June, a canon crossover with Miraculous Ladybug(to deal with how I hate the writing of that show since S3) that GodTiers Sollux, Nepeta, and Equius, and more. As for why it's called "Pajama Dirk"? TL;DR, because Dirk's "Authorial/Antagonist" attire is just some special pjs. Yes, there is a ministrife sprite. No, I will not place it here. It's not even transparent!

Psychonauts X Touhou: This "series" doesn't have a cool name. Taking place between UM and 100BM, when one forgotten gap gets left open close to the headquarters of the psychic secret agents, chaos is sure to follow.

Touhou X Demon Slayer: This also doesn't have a cool name. Basically, it connects the two in... ways. I can't word this well.

12 Star Fairies: A crossover between Homestuck and Fairy Tail. The kids have beaten SBURB, but everything seems to go sideways when the trolls wake up, all alive and missing the humans, seemingly being turned into humans themselves! Can they adapt to a world like Fiore? And will they get involved with Magnolia's infamous Fairy Tail guild?

The Spirit Pirates: A crossover between Touhou and One Piece. If you asked Iku Nagae for her plans, she wouldn't have said investigating some back door Matara insisted she join the team for looking into it. Nor would she have asked to end up stuck on a boat in the middle of some nowhere place, let alone with The Devil's Sister, The Border Youkai and her Shikigami, some girl, and others. As for the straggler they pulled out of the water and gave blood, she just thought he couldn't spell. I mean, "Asce". Really?

A Ship of Metal: A crossover between One Piece and RockMan: The Lights know they're not the most conventional family, all being adopted, after all. But, when 9 of the brothers end up changing violently after joining under some Marine known only as "Wily", Rock, Roll, and Blues come to the conclusion that they have to go after them! If that requires raising a Jolly Roger and leaving The West Blue? They'll do anything to make sure their brothers are okay.

The Dirkjake Meta masterpost

Let’s clear the most frequently asked question right off the bat:

“Is Dirkjake abusive?” | “Is Dirkjake toxic?”

No. Dirk and Jake’s romantic relationship is based on mutual interest and a supportive friendship established years prior to the events of the main story. What a reader experiences over the course of Homestuck act 6 is how their insecurities boil to an all-time high once the Game is afoot, aggravating some of their worst habits - Like Dirk’s inability to communicate honestly without hiding behind one of his splinters (may they be metaphorical or literal), and Jake’s practiced avoidance in the face of confronting and potentially upsetting one of his friends about their shitty behavior - until it ultimately leads to a breakup. But an imperfect first date does not abuse make. They were both barely 16, under ridiculously stressful and hopeless circumstances (over 5 months trapped inside a dead session populated only by ruin and decay!), and Homestuck ends on a note of reconnection, both of them making the choice to remain close after the immediate danger has been dealt with. I mean, at the end of the credits sequence they’ve made up, are nonsensically playing ball together, and have elected to share a home in the consort kingdom, so I don’t think this is an exaggeration.

Does Rose’s alcoholism in the Game Over timeline mean that Rosekan is abusive/toxic because Rose was not sober enough to consent on a routinely basis and her frequent slurring and fraught grasp on reality canonically upset Kanaya to the point of pushing her to scream? No. They’re teens in an imperfect relationship that is new to both of them, and at the end of Homestuck, they’ve also gone through a more forceful do-over.

Does Jade, June & Dave(sprite)’s friendship turning sour during their 3 year space trip held in extreme isolation, coinciding with jade and davesprite’s breakup, which upsets their dynamic enough that june threatens to beat him with her golden hammer in the middle of a morbid tantrum about how everything sucks mean that they’re not friends anymore and their relationship is toxic now? No. For similar reasons as those cited above.

Hell, the possibility of ‘Davekat’ was deemed abusive when it was still a weird and janky rarepair competing with the other two big Dave and Karkat ships. At the time, both fandom favorites set them up with the series’ protagonist, and Davekat was the ugly duckling. There were arguments about how it was ‘inherently toxic’ because they traded barbs on a daily basis, went after the same troll girl, suplexed one another onto a hard table, and Karkat’s perpetual screaming was cited as an *undoubtedly* grave trigger for Dave’s PTSD, among other threaded squabbles marking them as ‘permanently incompatible’. Through the course of act 6, Dave and Karkat’s bond eventually deepens, and they also end up together. Sensing a pattern here.

Point being: Relationships in Homestuck are not an smooth-sailing affair, never have been, and through the many years of fandom many people have interpreted them in the worst possible ways, but that isn’t a guarantee of truth, just a matter of individual perception.

And now you may be thinking, okay, I’m willing to humor the thought DirkJake isn’t as bad as the 2013 discourse posts written by fellow teens with a limited POV on relationships vehemently claimed it was, but I still don’t see what’s the big deal. These characters don’t make a lot of sense in my brain, individually or together.

Let’s talk about this fandom’s implicit bias:

So, in recent events I have made posts talking about how harmful it is that Roxy’s pesterquest sprite was black coded. Despite the character herself being white coded. I got a lot of hate for it and was even told to die. So let’s unpack why head canons of the striders/Lalondes as well as Gamzee and meenah being black is harmful to the black community. Because there is a toxic pattern between these characters and the way that they are the characters most likely to be drawn black.

This fandom’s demographic is mostly white and the fact that a lot of you who aren’t black are using your white savior complex to speak over black voices is unacceptable. A lot of the reasons why the fandom headcanons these characters as black are problematic in their own ways so I’ll be going over why I’ve been told these characters are black.

Dave and Roxy use AAVE: Dave actually uses very little Black vernacular through out the whole comic. The most common ones are Hella and dope which in the year 2009 were common phrases used by everyone despite it being taken from black people. While Roxy uses quite more than Dave her whole quirk is using internet speech in her writing and talk but other than those two things neither of them give off any black indication. And y’all forget that AAVE is used by everyone no of days and some of you use it without realizing.

Dirk and rose: Dirk is canonically white. John himself makes fun of Dave for having a white ventriloquist rapper brother. So there is literally no reason why people would say he is black same goes for rose. So far I have only seen people claim the derse kids as black because of Dave and Roxy.

Gamzee Uses voodoo: this is actually a valid point! Except, how many times have you seen fan art of human stuck!Gamzee using voodoo compared to him smoking weed or being stoned? Red flag right there. Not to mention he is a racist juggalo. Have you ever seen a group of juggalos? They are mostly white.

Meenah has braids: another good point! Except that y’all are confusing braids with braid ins. Which isn’t even the hairstyle she is wearing. Those are twists. And her character is the stereotype of a black woman “who don’t give two shits about others”

All of these characters (if they were black) portray negative stereotypes of black people that if the creators would confirm their race as black would be super problematic and racist to the black community.

Trickster mode: A lot of people have told me that along the characters look white in trickster mode was to make fun of the fandom about the race issue so their race isn’t “canon” However, trickster John came out in 2009 in the flash game “You There Boy” before the fandom had a huge fan base so that doesn’t make sense to me.

It’s the art style: Lame excuse. Bill Cosby could have been drawn with paper white skin and we’d still be able to recognize him by his features.

Pesterquest: A lot of you claim Roxy to be black because of her sprite in her route and harass others for drawing her white completely ignoring the fact that she was drawn with Eurocentric features in Rose’s route.

If the creators of hs2 were to confirm the striders and Lalondes to be black they would be pulling a Disney. Which is basically making black characters everything but black. We might know they are black but they do everything in not actually showing it. (Ex: Princess and the frog, Soul) This is extremely harmful to the black community because we aren’t getting proper representation. Dave, Rose, Roxy, And Dirk all have blonde hair and light colored eyes and while there are black peoples like that realistically it is obvious that wasn’t what hussie was going for. It isn’t their fault though because it’s natural for people to make there characters look like them, it’s the way it is.

Another point I wanted to bring up is the fact that Dave at one point said the N-word. That doesn’t mean headcanoning him as non black makes him racist. He grew up in a household where he had to learn what a fridge was from a movie. He was a kid he probably heard snoop dog and other of his idols use that word and thought nothing of it. Kids make mistakes. I used to say homophobic shit all the time as a kid but now I think about beautiful women on a daily basis. Kids can do/ say stupid stuff it’s how you learn and grow tha matters same thing with Karkat making fun of Nepeta’s autism.

A lot of you are speaking over black people about something you have no say in. And the fact that some of you went to the extreme of PRETENDING TO BE BLACK AND USING RACIAL SLURS is not ok.

I’m not saying don’t head canon them as black. Do what to want. But I’m asking you to re-evaluate why you headcanon them as black because whether you realize it or not a lot of you are using internalized racism to do it.

Homestuck 2 is a good opportunity to introduce new kids with appropriate racial representation and actually making them look the part. Without stating Roxy as black “because she’s always been black” Because imagine if trickster mode Roxy had dark skin and in pesterquest she had Eurocentric features like rose. This fandom would go apeshit.

Introduction

Hello! This is a project where I'm archiving homestuck playlists from 8tracks by transferring them to spotify. This is to preserve them in case 8tracks ever shuts down again and to also make it accessible for more people.

On top of moving the playlists to spotify I also make google docs for each collection of character / relationship playlists that has a list of every song from the original mix, along with links to the spotify and 8tracks version. [FREQEUNTLY USED TERMS]

Fanmix (also known as FTS or Fan Soundtrack) - A playlist that focuses on fan content, I.E a character or relationship. Will often get shortened into 'mix'.

Collection - A collection is a feature on 8tracks where you can put mixes together into a group. Similar to pinterest with the use of boards.

Relationship Mix - Any mix that focuses on 2 or more characters is deemed a 'relationship' mix. They will always be referred to as 'A and B' or 'A, B and C' instead of any ship names because not all relationships are inherently romantic.

Ultimate Fanmix - A mix I create using the top most commonly used songs in character or relationship fanmixes. The length will be the average of those mixes. Often shortened to 'Ult Mix'.

Archived - Any playlists I've put on spotify will be referred to as 'archived'.

The 'Hub' - The google document that has links to everything for easy access.

- I was blonde, with pink eyes, shades like Dave’s in canon, but my t-shirt was cut so the tops of my shoulders were exposed. I wore a black, wide-strapped tank top underneath that may or may not have been a chest compressor– I’m not sure if I was a cis male or FTM transgender, but I most definitely identified as male. I had a pink zipper hoodie that was usually just tied around my waist, black skinny jeans, and white hightop converse sneakers. My nails were always painted pink to piss off my Bro.

Dirk:

- I was also blonde, and I had dark purple eyes that, with my orange glasses, I usually passed off as black or very dark brown. I was really into the goth aesthetic, specifically kinda Victorian inspired. I wore heeled boots with orange laces, as well as these pants that had orange laces down the sides. I had an over coat that had buttons on each side that I wore pretty much all the time, and orange tint glasses that were octagon shaped

- Roxy has finished some art of what we looked like in our canon, and I do have a reference photo on my blog, as well as a rough sketch of Dirk. Feel free to ask about them!

Unlike the usual “first Saturday in May” celebration that has defined the even in normal years, due to issues with the ongoing pandemic the folks in charge have decided to move this year’s celebration back to August 14th. Homestuck - Heart and Mind

Inner self and outer self

Very veeeery long thread!

Heart

I’m going to be honest, this is the more head-scratching (ha!) symbol of the 12, in my opinion. While the others immediately (or take a moment to) make sense, this one confuse me. Sure, it’s a cartoonish representation of a pink human heart.

The problem isn’t the main shape, but the right side of it. Beside the fact that it’s more original and eye-catching than a filled heart, why this gap, this wiggling line? But let’s proceed in order and take a more general approach first.

It’s a pink heart on a darker purple/pink background. The left side is filled, while the right side looks like a tail that coming in or out the shape. We’ll get into it a bit down below.

In pop and universal culture, people has always been show this embodiment of the heart. While many theorise about when and where it came from, a stable origin was registered during the Middle Age, as a pear.

Here’s an exempt of the theory:

“Historically speaking, the first known depiction of a heart shape, which can be vaguely considered as a symbol of love, was made in the 1250s. It appeared in a decoration of a capital letter “S” in a manuscript of a French romance called “Roman de la Poire” (Romance of the Pear).

This miniature depicts a kneeling lover who offers his heart to a lady. This heart shape is similar to a pine cone, and it is held upside down (not in the usual position of the heart shape that we know today). Researchers only assume that the pine cone-shaped object is a heart because its part held by the lover is hidden. The name of this novel is “Romance of the Pear,” so the object may also be a pear.”

[Mio’s note: Roman actually means novel in french, and isn’t necessarily romantic. Though I guess it is in this context.]

It is interesting, in this paragraph the heart is both referred as pine cone-shaped and pear-shaped. The latter is extremely funny, has it reminds me of a famous fanon HS meme “Well this has gone completely fucking pear-shaped”, attributed to Dirk and the decapitation joke. He, in fact, never really said it in Canon.

If we indulge this banter, the pear-shaped heart would symbolise things that took a disastrous turn, and so negative and stressful elements such as anxiety, adrenaline (negative in this case, positive in others), heart pounding, leaving a weird and unpleasant sandy taste on your tongue.

But I digress.

What we actually need to focus on is that:

A fruit, the pear, has been associated to a love gesture, like a gift to express romantic affection to someone.

The pear is upside-down, as the text point out. Which is curious and worth mentioning.

“the pine cone-shaped object is a heart because its part held by the lover is hidden”. So what is important it’s what is inside it, and so inside your heart. Which perfectly echoes with my subhead: Inner self.

The article continues, with Guido whom also depicted his version of a heart:

“Guido da Vigevano, a 14th-century Italian physicist, made some anatomical drawings of a heart that are very similar to the descriptions made by Aristotle. These depictions, along with the presumption that the human heart is connected with emotion and pleasure, transformed the heart shape into a symbol of medieval love.”

After this, a picture shows Charity incarnated as a woman, giving her heart to Jesus. While I won’t dwell on the religious implications, it is a metaphor of showing care and compassion to someone. Giving them a bit of your time, patience, and heart. In an extreme case, being completely devoted to someone in a strong way.

Heart-bound fellows, despite the fact that they are concerned about themselves, are very people-oriented. They deeply want others to feel well and happy. Hence the expression being ‘kind-hearted/big-hearted’, and ‘work you heart out’. They put a lot of themselves into their hobbies, which they are passionate about.

After this, the article introduce the playing cards, implying that Guido had an influence on the decision to show a heart among the symbols:

The playing cards are even more relevant to this analysis, as their modern symbol are present in Troll romance. Here, the ‘clover’ is an acorn, the ‘spade’ a leaf, perhaps ivy, the heart is even more like the one we know nowadays, and the ‘diamond’ surprisingly is a small metallic bell. This set is dated from ~1540.

That was a (very) quick look at the evolution of the heart symbol.

I could go on and talk about Valentine’s Day, but it would be paraphrasing the site, and we have much more content to focus on. I invite you to take a look at said site and do some research of your own if you are interested about this peculiar bit.

Let’s go into more direct Homestuck content.

During the adventure, we are introduced to three Heart-players. Nepeta Leijon, Dirk Strider, and Meulin Leijon, in appearance order.

They all have interests related to feelings and love.

Nepeta has a shipping grid of her own friends on her cave’s walls and seems to be proficient in moirallegiance, a quadrant that require to be invested and devoted to their partner feelings. She had a crush on Karkat that she never confessed. Karkat knew but never worked the nerve to do something about it.

Dirk is engrossed by romance and smut, unashamedly draw his friends getting frisky (in a borderline-obscene way), is passionate about the projects he works on (work his heart out, sometimes literally). He was (and still is) madly in love with Jake. But by being overbearing and socially inept their relationship crumbled (while not being the only reason it didn’t work out).

[I love talking about Dirk, but I’ll do my best in this analysis to properly and equally split the content between Nepeta, Meulin and him]

Meulin not only love shipping, she also gives directly advises to her friends, and acted as a matchmaker. She shipped several of the alpha trolls but according to Aranea, she focused on how cute a couple would be, instead on how and if their dynamic would work out. Her matespritship with Kurloz was cut short when he yelled in his sleep, deafening Meulin in the process.

The most obvious element they share is that they are zealous and unlucky in love. One would say it depends on the class, personality or aspect. They seem all correct assumptions to me.

Nepeta was the first to be presented as a Heart-bound character, the Rogue of Heart. So, logically, the design of the Heart symbol could be inspired by her.

How, you ask. Let’s take a look to Nepeta’s sign.

The ‘Leo’ sign, in human culture represents the constellation of the lion, with the circle as their head, and the loop as the body and tail.

Now looking back and forth to Leo and Heart: Heeeey! It’s quite similar. Can you see it?

Alright, that’s a good start. So the right side is like a tail. Let’s dig and look around Heart/heart. Heart is synonym of soul. Its symbol is a pink blood pusher. For humans it represent romantic love, our only ‘official’ quadrant. A red lover for trolls is called a matesprit. Sprit comes from esprit, which is the french word for spirit. So matesprit is a soul mate. But this term is used for another concept in Homestuck. A spiritual guide during the player journey: a sprite.

The link between the Leo and Heart sign is getting stronger. The circle as the head, the wiggling line as the body and tail. The sprite is a living spirit, a floating soul present in the physical plane. So the right side, the tail, is bound to the left side, the head. Meaning the soul is bound to the body. Oh. But what if it was detached from it? Yeeep, you know, I know, they know. This is why and how decapitation come into the picture.

A kiss on the lips, which is seen often as a romantic gesture, is one of the resurrecting mechanism within SBURB/SGRUB. It transfers the soul from the ‘original’ body to the dream self, turning the latter into the main body. Separating the head from the rest of the body amounts to take away the soul, while throwing the head back (or any part of the corpse) into a kernelsprite recreate the link between the two.

A kernel is:

“ a computer program at the core of a computer's operation system with complete control over everything in the system. It is an integral part of any operating system. It is the "portion of the operating system code that is always resident in memory". It facilitates interactions between hardware and software components.””

It’s a brain that bound the soul to the body, and is the core of the system, controlling it. So basically, the digital mind made in SBURB. One display among the several ones of the Heart/Mind duality.

So wait, if the head in this case is the soul, and looking back at medieval picture at the beginning (dude kneeling in front of a lady offering a heart) then Dirk sendificating his head in [S] Dirk Synchronize/Unite is really a romantic overture toward Jake (sacrificing a part of his self then Hal prompting him to kiss Dirk’s lips). Same for Jasperose resurrecting Nepeta by using her head. Damn. You two are smooth operators in the most disturbing way.

Another personal theory in my mind, is that pink ‘tail’ could represent how a person use and interact with their aspect.

Nepeta, as a Rogue, remove or give personality, passion and feelings to someone.

For example she could appease a friend by removing their frustration. In contrary she could also give passionate feelings to someone who needs them. Such as in Ni no Kuni! In which the protagonist Oliver takes a piece of somebody’s soul (what is called emotion or virtue) to give it to someone who needs it. Those people are referred to “brokenhearted”.

So the wiggling tail would be something introduced or take away from the soul.

Dirk, as a Prince, has shown having the power to completely remove someone’s soul from their body.

And for that, he doesn’t like his abilities, exhibiting him as a ‘cartoonish villain’ like Voldemort (splintering his soul into horcruxes) or Xehanort (putting part of himself in the Organization members). Though he could remove and grab one of his friend’s soul to save them from a close death. See the fan comic Double Death of the Author by The Lifetime Channel on MSPFA, and the fan fiction Defragmentation by Katreal on Ao3.

In this case, the tail would represent the soul being slowly removed.

Meulin, as a Mage, have an understanding of people’s strong feelings, especially romantic ones.

Her ability is to read, feel and use her knowledge to help her friends figure out who is better suited for them. Meulin’s powers are similar to a diviner, allowing to form or break a couple. Perhaps with practice and reaching the God Tiers, she could even perceive red threads of fate which bound two lovers regardless of the location and time. The manga Bound Beauty (sorry, no english Wikipedia page) features a young lady with the ability to see those strings, usually invisible to the eye. She uses it at her advantage to coach her classmates, in exchange of money.

In this case, the tail would represent the red/pink thread of fate, coming not from the pinkie, but directly from the soul.

Mind

Watch as I make as much Mind puns as possible :p

This one is easier to read, which is also why it will be difficult for me to write a substantial section about it. Let’s start with the obvious.

It’s a vivid teal on a bit darker green background. Same as the Heart aspect, it’s more likely that the palette has been inspired by the first revealed character related to Mind: Terezi Pyrope, from the Teal caste. The shape is composed of an orb surrounded by three hook-like tails connected to the center. What effortlessly come to mind (ha!) is an organic cell, from the brain.

Neurons allow and facilitate informations to navigate in the brain.

It’s:

an electrically excitable cell that communicates with other cells via specialized connections called synapses.

Information goes from a neuron, through a synapse to another neuron. An idea leads to another, connecting bits that turns into the big picture. The Mind aspect seems to share the concept of data with the Light aspect. The differences are that Light focuses on the most fructuous parts, ones that lead them to victory, while the Mind-bound works with choices and a mindset, in a more wide range, then narrowing the paths.

Terezi using her vision to s33 what action leads to which outcome, searching for the most fitting one.

Rose insisting that Kanaya come along the 3 years ride, while explaining and guiding Kanaya to make her narrowing her vision of “victory”.

So both Seer treat information, just not in the same way.

The outcome still remains ”I want to advance toward a certain reality and I help others to reach it as long as they follow my instructions”. The inconvenient blind spot (sorry for the involuntary pun) is that they hardly can use those abilities for themselves. Either we don’t witness it on-screen, or they barely do it in the first place (a good example is the retroactive continuity during the GO timeline).

But let’s end the Seer detour here. Back to the Mind aspect itself.

We have a whole system going on in our own head. When I try to look for something, if I don’t find it directly, then I turn to something related to said information. Like an indirect research on the internet. If we don’t pay attention and don’t try to understanding our mind, as well as others’, we just end up being frustrated and lost.

The thing is you make your own world, with every action, decision, it creates a new path full of possibilities. The words you say or keep to yourself, acting or staying put, it all matter. Grasping and managing to own it, and you’ll have a better grip on your reality. It’s not my Aspect, I do have trouble making decisions and take responsibilities, however everybody needs to go through it.

The within interacts with the without, the mind to the outside word. We are always worried about how others perceive us, what kind of depiction of the self we convey. So we desperately put filters to the point of exhibiting falsehood of a personality. While introspection is observing ourselves, extraspection is perceiving things that are outside our mind. Hence the outer self, complementary to the inner self.

Terezi perfectly get how people work, and can manipulate them with ease, in contrary to Vriska whom doesn’t want to and go for mind-controlling them. Joke’s on her, her ‘mind’-control is proof that she fails in this peculiar category, since Terezi doesn’t need any psychic powers to convince someone to do and give the info she desires.

The big contrast contrast between Vriska and her, is that Terezi looks and determine what matters or not, while Vriska force the odds to be in her favor, shamelessly stealing fortune from others. She doesn’t even want to understand or try, she is a cheater and proud of it.

That was the link and differences between Mind and Light.

Let’s take a look at the Heart/Mind duality again. Both seem to share a connection with electricity.

It’s no secret that the connection between neurons are often compared to electronic chips. Cables canalize and facilitate electricity’s flow, to power devices, to link ideas and data. Or just used as raw energy.

While the electricity for the Mind symbol refer to synapses, for the Heart/heart, also called blood pusher, would allude to cardiac nerves.

Instead of thoughts, it’s blood that navigates in the ‘roads’.

For the Heart-bound, the lightning represents the chaos that are emotions and sensitive intuition. While for the Mind-bound the lightning is order, reasoning and cold logic that strikes to bring justice, whether said justice is deem fair or not.

Let’s talk about a famous movies series in which among the core themes resolve around the Mind/Heart duality: The Matrix

Each building, tree, person are made with an inimaginable amount of lines of code

The Matrix spoilers ahead!!

If you’re not familiar with this trilogy (or haven’t watch it in a while), here’s the plot:

//Thomas A. Anderson is a programmer for a big software company, and in parallel is Neo, a hacker that illegally provides contraband programming. Agents in black suits caught up with his activities, but in truth approached Neo because a renowned hacker, Morpheus, enemy number one according to Agent Smith, contacted the programmer. After offering to clean his criminal record in exchange of helping catching Morpheus, which Neo refuses, the agents violently implant a snitch in our protagonist.

Neo wake up in his bed, believing it was all but an awful nightmare. Appearances are deceiving, as ‘dream sequences’ are layers on layers on reality. The resistance group calls him again, setting a rendez-vous under a bridge to help him and answer his questions, if he is willing to cooperate.

After a lot of hesitation, snitch removal, and the insistence of one of the member, Trinity, he finally accept and follow the group to go meet Morpheus.

There, Neo is given a choice, The Choice if we’re going with Homestuck comparisons:

"This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill—the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill—you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."

Morpheus, Matrix (1st movie)

By choosing the take the red pill, Neo accepts to unplug himself (literally) from his ‘reality’ and see the truth: the world he lives in is all but an illusion, a huge program that is the Matrix, blinding humans to a make-believe 1999 year, used as living batteries, harvested and enslaved by the machines. Humanity is in ruins, and a war between people and machines has gone for a whole century.

Morpheus tells him that they believe he’s ‘The One’ and he has the power to stop the war. From the real world, Neo will train to reinforce his mind, going back into the Matrix and fight different enemy programs. While constantly being undergo introspection, looking for what to believe, who he is, questioning his values and acts.\\

From there I’ll go back and worth to Homestuck and the movies to point out the similarities and support my choice.

I’ll begin with the Mind aspect first:

Millions of human beings are plugged, treated as programs that have a function, along with providing a great amount of energy to the machines. Stuck and having their body atrophied, their brain is connected to the Matrix. The program control everything of their life and vision, from their status in society, to their physical sensations.

"What is real? How do you define real?" asks Morpheus to Neo. “If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain." As I quote farther above, reality is something that isn’t there, but rather something you make. With Morpheus’ quote, my interpretation of the Mind symbol being neutrons and synapses is consolidated.

After being blinded by Vriska, Terezi way of ‘seeing’ shifted. Slowly, her perception of things changed and she grasped on a new light her reality.

She didn’t need eyes, but expanding her mind and freeing herself from the vision that clouded her. Navigating inward and outward, understanding what she felt, her inner self and outer self, back and forth. But it wasn’t perfect, no, she had and still is working on it, as she can be blinded by either cold logic or passionate feelings. Neo and her have the same weakness, they both are in love and it obstructs their mission. The dilemma is exhibited in [S]: Flip, where she has to choose between letting Vriska go, exposing the whole team to Jack, or killing her to protect her friends.

A painful sacrifice is needed to be able to go forward, a reality in which most of them survive and has a chance of winning the game. A necessarily path that she regretted.

In Matrix, Neo has to reach the source of all the program to reinstall the previous version of the code. The first time, he has a small range of opportunity, only a few minutes gap to access a secret room that would allow him to reach the source, among the city of machines. There, he encounters the Architect, a program whom function and personality is based on the creator of the Matrix, and have a chat with him.

Six others chosen ones preceded him, and all failed to accomplished this mission.

Why? “Choice. The problem is choice” answers Neo. Because unlike the Architect, Neo is a flawed human being. He can’t just brush off his feelings, he’s in love with Trinity. The latter despite asked not to join him plugged herself back into the Matrix allowing him to get safely into the secret room. With that, she exposed herself to an inevitable death. And so Neo took the door that lead to his lover, enabling within him a miracle that resurrected Trinity.

Here was a couple of paragraphs about the dance between duty and love, cold logic and passion.

I’ll continue with the Heart aspect:

I talked about love and romance until now, but let’s take a look at another side of the Heart. The identity.

After taking the red pill- Neo turns his head and gaze at a mirror.

It’s shattered. The symbolism here shows that he’s lacking a part of himself, something that scratch him without being able to put his finger on it. Soon, right before his eyes, the mirror mends itself. Because he chosen the truth, the path that would lead him to understand and find himself.

The mirror is of course, a reference and call back to Alice, mentioned shortly before by Morpheus. No no, please forget about any cartoon, especially Disney’s version of the story. And focus about the sequel book: “Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There”. It’s a curious, deep and tricky book. I would know, I read it twice and I’m still confused.

But I’m sure of one thing, the adventures of Alice has always been about introspection. First in chapter 1, Alice imagines for fun that the mirror in the living room lead to a parallel world. Like Neo, she touches the mirror and engages into a journey. In chapter 3, in order to cross a giant life-sized chess board (UH HMMMM UNCANNY!) she takes a train.

“There she forgets all nouns, including her own name. With the help of a fawn who has also forgotten his identity, she makes it to the other side, where they both remember everything. Realizing that he is a fawn, she is a human, and that fawns are afraid of humans, it runs off (to Alice's frustration).”

The train might symbolize the course of life, or a part of it, in which an identity crisis occurs for Alice and question what is and what does it means. I’ll even say that this temporary memory loss put aside all differences and precedences, perhaps reflecting a class hierarchy, between Alice the human and the fawn, or the rich lady and the poor.

Back to Matrix.

Later in the movie, our programmer encounters a woman called the Oracle. She can see some events according to her grasp on human psychology, but never beyond a choice that she cannot understand, not even hers. The Oracle isn’t here to predict the future (even if she can), but to assist and guide those who picked the red pill. She does sound like a Seer of Mind :]

Upon meeting her, she asks him “do you think you are the one?” to what he respond “honestly I don’t know”. She then point behind him, toward a mantra hanged above the threshold: Temet nosce, which means “know thyself”.

The introspection will continue through all three movies, a wild tango between certitude and doubts, self that leads to a choice, from a choice which leads to who he is, the two are intertwined and indivisible.

In Matrix: Revolution (third movie), the final battle between our protagonist and his alter ego take place. Rain is pouring, thousand and thousand of copies looking down at him, the sky is dark, and Agent Smith step away from the crowd, so the fight begins.

Remember the paragraph about the lightning? The sky in this scene is quite reminiscent to Terezi Land’s electric atmosphere, and even more Dirk’s, has his planet is covered be countless empty green buildings in ruins.

The scene portraits perfectly the confrontation between order and chaos, good and evil, selfless and selfish. I could go on and on but I think y’all got the concept, and I nicely fill an even bigger word quota, with the two aspects balanced.

100 Homestuck Headcanons Of Mine

Both Meulin and Nepeta say “hewwo” unironically. They can also replicate the OwO and UwU faces near perfectly.

Roxy loves Five Nights At Freddie’s, Undertale, and Minecraft.

The Striders and Lalondes have a group Minecraft server.

One time Roxy convinced Rose to play Halo with her, Dirk, and Dave. That was when they found out Rose was surprisingly good at it, and Fortnite.

The trolls all love Animal Crossing

Actually, everyone loves Animal Crossing.

The Mayor is the only one who had Raymond. That is because Dave gave him Raymond.

Everyone else wants Raymond.

Vriska stabbed someone for Raymond. She didn’t get Raymond.

The Harley-English-Egbert-Crocker family have a group Minecraft server, and that’s it.

They tend to spend their free time seeing what whacky things they can alchemize.

At one point they managed to alchemize Captain America’s shield. No one is sure how, but it works.

Roxy and Dirk can both eat whole ghost peppers. Rose and Dave both hate spicy food.

Jane doesn’t mind spicy things but prefers sweet stuff instead. John and Jake are fine with a little spice but not as much as Roxy and Dirk. Jade can’t have anything spicy or she will get extremely sick.

Spicy peppers, and peppers in general, are lethal to trolls, due to the capsicum in them. The first time Karkat and Kanaya saw Dirk and Roxy eating peppers they freaked out.

Dirk and Roxy have occasional competitions to see who can eat the most peppers in a minute. It’s hilarious.

Karkat learned the Alternia equivalent of an Earth ukulele before the game. He remembers one song from it and occasionally borrows Jake’s ukulele to play it when he’s sad.

Jake, Jade, Jane, and John have every musical instrument you could name, and some you couldn’t.

Jake can play the ukulele and bagpipes. Jane can play piano and keytar. Alongside bass, Jade can play the trumpet and otamatone. John can play guitar and saxophone.

Dirk can play the otamatone. That’s it.

Roxy keeps requesting that Jade alchemize cats. She has about 30 by now.

Roxy gave Dave a cat. He named him Skittles, and claims it’s completely ironic.

Dirk also has a cat, named Twilight Sparkle

Rose has a cat named Cthulhu.

Jake has a parrot named Indiana Jones

Jade now has a corgi named Thor.

John managed to get Jade to help him alchemize a dragon. It’s name is Fluffernutter.

Jane is a master at anything kitchen-y. Jake and John both burn water. Jade can cook stuff but prefers take out.

Roxy knows how to make grilled cheese and soup really well, and Dirk is good with a grill but that’s it.

Rose makes the best hot chocolate, tea, and coffee. Any drink you want, she can make. She can’t cook anything though.

Alternatively, Kanaya is an excellent cook but thinks that mixing Dr. Pepper, Sprite, and Faygo together is good.

Kanaya has mixed every soda the kids could find together before. Dirk paid John $30 to drink it. John did.

“If you open a banana from the bottom you are a disgrace to the world and we all know you’re a top who can’t find a bottom.”- Rose, Kanaya, Jade, Vriska

One time John used the Mayor’s cuteness to get Jane to bake him a cake. Dave found out and was pissed.

Dave convinced Rose to knit the mayor a sweater.

The mayor loves Doritos. He always gets the last one in the bag.

Kanaya loves mixing different types of one kind of food or drink. She has mixed all the candy in the house, much to the delight of most everyone, has mixed all the soda (it now lives in the back of the fridge for when they play truth or dare) and has mixed all the cereal in the house, much to the irritation of Roxy and Rose.

Dave ate a handful of Kanaya’s cereal mix because Dirk said he wouldn’t.

Trolls don’t have grey skin, they have grey fur.

Said fur poofs up when the trolls are scared as a defense mechanism, like a cat. But instead of being fluffy, it’s spiky and sharp. Trying to punch a fluffed up troll ends badly.

If you mix Faygo and sopor slime you get the troll equivalent of weed.

Calliope found archery and axe-throwing, and is wonderful at both.

The beta trolls ancestors can change their size.

The Grand Highblood and the Condesce shifted to a larger size permanently to intimidate other trolls.

Some don’t use it as much, or at all, like the Dolorosa, the Signless, or Neophyte Redglare.

Dualscar uses it to ease travel or to win fights, and will grow to extreme sizes so he can get through the water faster. It’s also ten times easier to sink ships.

The Psiionic couldn’t use the power once he became the Helmsman.

Darkleer uses it to grow smaller, so he can work on the small, delicate parts of his inventions.

Carapacians grow weed as a crop. For them, it’s their main source of food. For humans, it’s weed. It’s poisonous to trolls.

Sea dwellers’ lusii die more frequently (possibly due to the eldritch being at the bottom of the ocean), so they started letting older sea dwellers adopt sea dwellers that aren’t really old enough to survive without a lusus.

How many sweeps a troll is can be equated to human years, but when compared to other blood castes it becomes very skewed. A sweep equals roughly two human years, but different blood castes view this differently. Rust bloods, bronze bloods, and gold bloods all live fairly short lives, so 7 sweeps is roughly half their life span. Lime bloods and jade bloods all view 7 sweeps as being a bit like their early twenties. Teal and cerulean bloods would consider 7 sweeps to be roughly 13 or 14. Cobalt and purple bloods would see 7 sweeps as maybe being 6 or 7. Violet and fuschia bloods live for thousands of years, so legally and when comparing life experience to other fuschia/violet bloods, 7 sweeps is basically a very young toddler. This is just how each caste views age internally, given that they have different lifespans. 7 sweeps is roughly 13 or 14 in human years. This is explained badly but it’s also an alien concept put into English.

Teal and cerulean bloods have the closest lifespan to humans.

Dealing with eldritch beings shortens your lifespan because of the toll it takes on your body. This means that if Rose never reached godtier she would have died earlier than she was supposed to. This also means that if Eridan wasn’t chainsawed in half he probably would have had the lifespan of a purple blood or blueblood.

An ahab crosshairs or whatever can be really deadly in certain situations, but outside of that it’s basically useless.

The one time Dave met Kankri, he decided to put all of Mindless Self Indulgence’s songs on shuffle and play whatever came on first to Kankri. It was ‘Stupid MF’. Kankri flipped his shit and Dave is no longer allowed near him.

Meenah turned it into a game to see who could get the loudest reaction from Kankri by playing an MSI song. So far the winners have been 1. Vriska with ‘Faggot’, 2. Cronus with ‘Bitches’, and 3. Meenah with “Fuck Machine’. Honorable mentions include ‘Get It Up’, ‘Big Poppa’, and ‘Dickface’.

The game is ridiculously easy to win, given that most MSI songs are A) about sex, B) have slurs in them, C) are just really offensive in general, or D) all of the above.

To win the game you record Kankri’s reaction to the song and upload it to a forum on pesterchum.

Kankri is unaware there is a game.

Cronus repeatedly hits on everyone he meets. There are two people who he’s stopped flirting with, though.

The first one is Vriska. The first time he flirted with her she kicked him in the balls. The next time she stabbed him. He stopped trying after that.

The other one is John. He kept comparing Cronus to people from late 20th century movies with greasers in them.

Roxy loves riot grrrl bands.

Roxy, Sollux, John, and Karkat started a coding club. Roxy and Sollux help Karkat and John get better at coding, and also challenge each other to break into more and more ridiculous places.

At one point, using the codes that let Roxy and Dirk talk to Jake and Jane, Roxy and Sollux were able to hack into different government websites in different universes.

This includes the Pentagon, the FBI, and the CIA. They figured out how to get news live from the other universes, so occasionally they invite their friends over and watch a different world panic.

They end up doing internet troll stuff once in the websites. They’ll leave things equating to “aliens from another universe were here” and shit. They’ll make it so every time the website is open the screen turns pink or red and blue.

One time they left a picture of a message in Alternian. When the feds decoded the message, it just said “2ollux and Roxy were here. 2ucker2.”

One time they replaced all the photos of people with badly photoshopped versions of the photos where all the faces had been replaced by either Nic Cage’s face or Danny Devito’s face.

When they aren’t breaking into government websites, Roxy and Sollux will set up firewalls for the other to try and get past.

Aradia and Federico bleached Eridan’s hair while he slept, and cut it short. They also put pink bows on his horns. Just because.

Because Sollux can hear voices of the imminently deceased/is basically half dead, and Aradia has a strong connection to death, they were able to manipulate this so they could communicate telepathically. It takes focus, but they can do it.

Dirk knows Japanese, and can understand Damara. He is the only one who can.

They have inside jokes about everyone they know

Vriska found 5 or 6 doomed versions of herself and brought them back to life. They live in a shared hive and use the fact that they are all various Vriskas to prank people to an extreme. The only one who know whats happening outside of them is Terezi, because A) seer, and B) the one who gave John the list of things to do was brought back as well and told her.

ok so at first i didn't want to comment on the route before finishing it but there's already many interesting things?

Note: I'm right after mspar almost touched the katana before dirk stop them

1) we appear to not have choices. The flash are certainly what we would have had as bad end card, but we don't get them, because we don't get choices.

2) the two time a choice was to expect, dirk cut us before we got it. i don't think it's intentional though. may have something to do with his prince of heart class? though destroying our choices looks more like a mind thing than a heart one. but it could fit with how mspar has gotten more control lately, what with them refusing the given choices in roxy's route.

3) we have way much more details for this route. animation, but also detailed sprite. Dirk turning his back to us? him clearly handing us the shitty sword? these things are usually narrated only with the sprite being the neutral one. but here we've got sprites for these. no wonder it took more time.

4) also, his sprites are AWESOME

(Someone asked in my inbox why Brain Ghost Dirk shouldn’t be exactly the same as Prince Dirk if Prince Dirk is “all of himself”. Think of a Venn Diagram that instead of two intersecting circles, is a tiny circle completely inside a giant circle: Prince Dirk is accessing just about all of his “essence of self” across creation, but that goes mostly one way unless his other selves allow it, like the one who committed suicide in Candy to grant his other self more relevance did because he’d been onboard with the same plan from before the branching point. Prince Dirk can pull from the rest of himself as an Ultimate Self, but Brain Ghost Dirk is still just a splinter. Still a discrete self not necessarily sharing the mind of the rest of the whole. Just like how we’ve had other “Ultimate Selves” who have gained access to their entire Heart, like RoboDave/Rose or Jasprosesprite^2, but their wills haven’t bled into their other separate selves and iterations. )

Well, keep in mind that said Jasprose -- while capricious -- also has the knowledge and feelings of Rose Lalonde’s entire timeline-spanning essence and Heart... without Prince Dirk being at all close enough to delude or manipulate her mind the way he’s been doing to the PROPER Ultimate Rose.

Meaning Jasprose may very well know just how fucking hoodwinked her other self is, and has the power to REALLY fuck with Prince Dirk’s plans for Earth C in his absence. Or at least make Jane’s presidency a little less catastrophic than Dirk was recklessly going to let it be. Suck it, Dirk!

I’m predicting Jane will be put through some serious hijinks and tomfoolery. With a boundary-less sprite uncomfortably flirting with her all the way. Let’s hope this bonus story is planned to give us a bit more hope for the state of the Earth whoever survives this Dirkchase is going to, hopefully, come back to. As much hope as we want to have... in Candy, and here, Jake is right there to help solve the problem, but on the trip chasing Prince Dirk? They kind of left Hope behind...
