THOUGHTS ON MARBLE HORNETS CLASSPECTS REAL QUICK THAT I'M GONNA EXPAND ON LATER PROBABLY

Jay is definitely a Light player, constantly motivated by a search for the truth and largely kept alive by his own dumb luck and fortune; plus there's the whole 'bringing attention to everyone involved by posting everything on fucking YouTube' thing.

Tim is a Heart player, which seems pretty obvious given his alter-ego of Masky. A great deal of his angst comes from his lack of self-control and his fear of what he does when he dons the mask; the crux of Tim's arc is rejecting his other personality and trying to get a solid grasp on his own emotions.

Alex? He's a harder one to pin down, but I'm gonna say Void. He does begin his arc as fairly Light-focused (a pretentious college film student who wants to put himself out there into the spotlight) but when you consider his primary role in the narrative? Alex is the one desperately trying to spread obscurity and obfuscation because he believes the mere knowledge of the Operator is dangerous - he's motivated to create secrecy and destroy truth & relevance in the name of covering up the cognitohazard that is the Operator.

Brian is really fucking with my head right now. I feel like he's also somewhere on the Light-Void dichotomy? He operates in shadow & secrecy but at the same time he's obsessed with spreading the truth of everything and taunting Alex with the knowledge he holds. His constant tendency for mind-gaming also makes me wonder about Mind? (Which would work quite nicely alongside Tim being a Heart player to place both them and Jay/Alex as opposites.) Also arguably more tied to knowledge than Light, and I did just mention he's fucking with my head.

No strong thoughts on Jessica yet either, but my gut tells me Breath? I'm not too sure, but I guess there's an argument to make that her arc is about freedom from the Operator and disconnection from everything else going on around her.

Experimenting with new formatting here so my posts are more uniform (as opposed to being some late-night stream of consciousness). also pretty colours

Apologies for a lack of posts! I fell down an AO3 rabbit hole and just crawled out.

I’ve been reading DCxDP crossovers, despite having 1) never seen Danny Phantom and 2) having never read any Batman comics, and only having seen like.. 3 Batman movies, none of which were the same continuity (The Batman, Batman Begins, and the Tim Burton one, for those curious. Of those three I only enjoyed The Batman).

That being said, I have aspect thoughts for some characters purely based on the fannon in these fics and would like to hear others’ thoughts. Note my above credentials and take everything with a grain of salt.

Batman, at least in any continuity it’s reasonable for him to have the Batfam in (glares at most of the movies other than The Batman), is a Blood player. He’s defined by his relationship to his city, his many children, his dead family, and his adoptive father/butler. He is 100% a passsive class, active use type. I’d say Knight, maybe Heir.

Danny is an Heir of Heart. Did I base this thought mostly on the fact that that is literally “One who becomes/inherits soul”? Yes. Do I still think it fits outside of that? Also yes.

Jason went grimdark when he came back and some of that stuck with him, maybe to the point that either his class or aspect fully shifted. I’m not sure what he was before nor what he is now, but I’m certain that they’re different.

Sorry if this is out of the blue, but what do you think of the whole "Heart players deal with their splinters"? To me, it doesn't really make sense?

I keep seeing it in classpecting posts (which are years old tbf) and imo, splinters are a Dirk thing, not a Heart thing.

I mean, if Heart is the aspect of the True Self, then it makes sense for Dirk as a Prince to destroy it and have multiple selves. But Nepeta, for example, never struggles with this? Nor Meulin?

The only other self Nepeta has is her role-playing persona, which she doesn't really struggle with, and her Dream Self which I think was awake on Prospit before the start of the game.

Unless you count Fefetasprite and Davepetasprite, and she seems happy as both.

I feel like sometimes fans only look at Dirk to define Heart and forget that Nepeta also was a Heart player, or that Dirk had a Destroyer class.

What the hell?

Yeah, this is absolutely a problem caused by what I like to call “Strider Bias”. Dirk is very, very frequently used as the sole reference for analysis of Heart as an Aspect, with complete disregard for the fact that he is a Prince. It’s such an issue within Classpect Analysis that even the Official Extended Zodiac Site fucked this up.

Splinters are a Dirk only problem, stemming from his specific manifestation of him being a Prince of Heart. This is because Heart is the Aspect of the True Self, and Prince is a Destructive Class. He expresses this by fragmenting his soul- or his self- into “Splinters” and scattering them elsewhere. This is not something that other Heart players have to deal with, because the nature of their relationship with Heart is not inherently Destructive. Destruction of Heart is needed for Splintering. That is in the very nature and title of the ability.

Earnestly, Spriting does not count towards Splintering unless what was put within the Sprite… Was ALREADY a Splinter. Davepetasprite^2 and Fefetasprite are not Splinters of Nepeta. They’re just Sprites that happen to have Nepeta in them, who happens to be a Heart player. No one’s saying Erisolsprite is a Splinter of Sollux or Eridan, nor that Davesprite is a Splinter of Dave or the crow. That side of the argument falls apart when you consider that the Heartbound aren’t the only people that get Sprited.

Same for the Roleplaying example. The Heartbound aren’t the only people that Roleplay. Nepeta’s roleplaying has to do with her being a Rogue of Heart. That’s a Redistribution class. She’s just putting her soul into a character for a while as a means of earnest self expression. She gets her friends to do it with her, yes, but none of it has to do with Splintering. It’s not Destructive. You need Destruction to form Splinters.

do people really believe that when a hero goes god tier it leaves a ghost of their dead waking self wandering around the dream bubbles[?] if you've just revealed the characters we were introduced to at the start of the story have been ghosts for a dozen acts, that's something the story actually needs to address the ramifications of [...] but now that i put it into words, that's exactly the same argument people had against The Retcon

for the first dozen or so acts, most of us probably assume that characters in Homestuck have "souls", and that when a character dies and leaves a ghost, that's their "soul" wandering around, disembodied. but as of commentary in Book 6, this maybe isn't true? a ghost is a memory of someone; as per Ultimate Self, it is one interpretation of someone, just one part of a greater whole. under this schema we don't have to worry about where a ghost "comes" from, because merely the act of observation, in that classically mysterious quantum way, allows a ghost to exist. there can be dream ghosts (like Jadesprite) and god tier ghosts (ala Remem8er) in just the same way there can be pre-retcon ghosts.

there are some analyses that need to be discarded under such an interpretation. it is no longer meaningful that we never see a single ghost of Gamzee, because Gamzee no longer needs to have "died" to have left a ghost.

meanwhile some things need to be completely rethought. if there is no "soul" - an invention of the great fanfic writer Calliope? derived from cherub folklore, and not reflective of Homestuck's "reality"? - then what is the domain of the Heart aspect? are the twin aspects Heart and Mind both to do with interpreting? what then is the difference? does Heart deal with interpretation of the past, Mind with interpretation of the future? many opposed aspects are able to effectually "undo" each other; Light can reveal that which Void has obscured, Hope can make real the things that Rage has imagined... so by assuming that the "soul" is purely a metaphor for the idea of memory, can perhaps we take a step closer to realising this same relationship between Heart and its shadow...
