I really liked these unique scenes that were made for the Pikmin Garden website entry on caves. Technically, neither of these use unique assets, but it's kinda cute that they went through the trouble of making these scenes just for character building.

It almost gives me hope for DLC~

Day 12 of Piktober was Crossover. I am not participating too heavily in the event (as I do not have the brain for it this year), but I did wanna get in a couple days, one of which is today's prompt.

This is Tsubakura Enraku from Len'en Project, a Touhou inspired work where just about everyone's gender is left up to player interpretation. I have a whole Len'en/Pikmin AU in my head, but for now this piece will work as a clue of what to expect were I to ever go any further with it.

Tsubakura themself though is...a poor choice for a Pikmin protagonist lol. They're too lazy. They are funny at least.

does anyone else ever think abt ai no uta. the song released in tandem with pikmin 1, and included as an easter egg in pikmin 2, sung from the pikmins pov about how they are aware of and embrace their own mortality, how disposable each pikmin is, how they'll follow their captain to the death even if the captain doesn't care for them. "today again we'll carry, multiply, fight and be eaten" can anyone hear me. it's so dark in here

#pikmin really is such a unique series #the first one is like. extremely aware of and comfortable with death #the pikmin tend to get the cute + marketable treatment but make no mistake they know that they'll die and they're okay with that #between ai no uta being the pikmin saying 'we would die for you and we don't care if you don't love us back' but also the 30 day time limit #+ bringing the enemies corpses back to make more pikmin #the pikmin series is about nature. right. and nature is equal parts beautiful and grisly #there's beauty in death. your pikmin died but because they died you're a little closer to surviving #your pikmin died fighting that giant but now they can take it back and create more pikmin out of it #and so many people go in thinking it's a cutesy kids game with goofy character and creature design #I think you're meant to wonder what the pikmin would do if you died #and if you have a dandori issue you get to find out that yes they do take your dying body back to their onion #but you don't get consumed. you get a leaf. you become a pikmin #and you have to wonder why they brought you back. did they know it would save you? did it save you because they love you? #does the onion know what you did for them and pay you back out of kindness? or is it because it knows you're the key to survival #cutting myself off here because this post really got away from me #something about love and mortality #espeon cries #analysis

she does need sleep! she doesn't need to sleep as often as people, but she's a little wraith and she needs to snooze every like... i dunno. three days? sure, let's go with that.

although in the first few days of her being on PNF404, i could see her getting bored one night and poking around her crewmate's rooms to see what they're doing (spoilers: they're all just sleeping). in the morning after, dingo talks about a very bizarre dream he had with a specter watching him sleep! everyone dismisses it as the ranger having some weird sleep paralysis, but pom's sweating at the table thinking about how she should be way more careful if she does that again.

this ask did inspire me though, i'll probably make more art explaining how she works sometime later hehe...

that'd be scary... although, if there's anyone incentivized to wraithify olimar, it'd probably be the plasm wraith! that golden goo is really fond of him, and they'd love to make olimar just like them

yes!! he's the first one to discover her secret. it'd probably happen on accident out on the field pretty early on when pom is forced to defend herself with no pikmin, but it's no difference to Oatchi -- pom is pom! he'd bark and give her helmet a lick, and when pom realizes her rescue pup isn't scared of her it's quite the relief...

YES!!!!!!!!! there are so, so many ways that could happen and each one is hilarious... i've written out a few different scenarios, i should pick one to draw out... it'd be funny if dingo learns her secret but decides to trust her and keep it safe. but he's, you know. dingo. he's not good at lying, especially to his crewmates (and especially to his actual childhood friend of a doctor who was already very suspicious of the new blood!)

that's actually a really good question! i haven't thought too much about how her full wraith would visually change, but if she ate enough and got stronger i imagine she'd finally be as big as the other two. she'd probably gain more wraithy abilities and attacks! trying to take down a powered up full wraith pom would be a very difficult fight, even for those with the best dandori skills and a full squad of pikmin

theres also a specific set of turtles called map turtles and theyre so unbearably small. iirc they're THE smallest turtles in existence (and of them i think the ouachita map turtle is the smallest? though ofc i could be wrong)

theres also a specific image of a concentric diamondback terrapin (second result under images on google when you're in the "all" tab) and were it not for the laws of this land (being on anon) id send you the image directly because its just so beautiful and radiant and he has the most GORGEOUS shell it looks like polished wood and hes got very cow-like patterns on his scales and i thought you might like him

Recently I've been replaying and recording Pikmin 3 Deluxe (2020) in preparation for an upcoming project of ours (shh, it's a secret), and it's pretty good ain't it? It is honestly more in line with what I would've wished Pikmin 4 was. Not to say that the latest entry is somehow a bad one, but I do feel like it could've leaned more towards Pikmin 3 rather than 2 in some ways.

Pikmin 3 ditches the metaphysical dream caves and instead cuts the stages up in different segments, some of which are in fact cave systems. I like that they more naturally blend into the environments and connect to different parts of the levels to create shortcuts or passageways to hidden away areas. I personally like this approach a whole lot more because of how it cohesively ties everything together.

The classic statically top down view of the series is also present here and has some added stuff to make it more dynamic. It gives you a great view of everything within your vicinity and works really well when you strategically switch between the three playable characters. This time around the camera also shifts the view at times to show you scenic vistas or things of interest, which really makes certain transitional areas that funnel you from one to another stick out from the rest. Makes the Pikmin world feel more vast and unexplored.

There are also several big boss creatures introduced that are all engaging to take down. I simply adore their designs, especially the Vehemoth Phosbat that is just the right amount of fucked up and cute to make it a top tier Pikmin pest. It might be a bit 'video gamey' so to speak to enter these big areas with huge boys that require you to use specific mechanics to take down, but I think they're more fun for it to be honest. Topping it all off with the Plasm Wraith that chases you through an entire cave system and you've got yourself a solid roster of freaks to take down.

Some people say that Pikmin 3 is too short, but I can do nothing but scoff at that sentiment. The truth™ is that Pikmin 3 is just as long as it needs to be. It's the perfect length. No fluff. If anything I'd consider a game like Pikmin 4 to be too long, basically filled with 'content' for 'contents' sake. Sure it has a whole hecking lot of things to do, but I think a game like Pikmin 3 has much more memorable quality material within its humble run time than the latest entry could ever muster. I don't know if it was spread too thin to pad out the length, but either way I'll take a shorter game any day of the week. I don't want to eat an entire trash bag full of popcorn, you know. No I will not elaborate.

On a side note, this is the Pikmin game with the perfect co-op mode. Just two people given equal control of the game, makes the multitasking more relaxed and manageable in a way that makes you and your comrade compatriot feel like the masters of a well-oiled Pikmin machine. I love it.

All in all, Pikmin 3 is the Pikmin 3 of Pikmin games. It has gameplay, visuals and sometimes even sound. And hey, if that doesn't convince you, need I remind you that it has Brittany? I would marry her if I could! (She's too small.)

I was actually thinking about doing paper craft for Cyden.....but uh it's fucking 12 am so- Out in nature felt like it was made for them as they're children in labour. But CYRIL'S FUCKING STUPID HAIR MADE ME STRUGGLE- THEN AGAIN I CAN'T DRAW CYRIL WITHOUT THINKING OF GRIFFIN BURNS AND TARTAGGLES. But overall the quicket piece (why is it always the last piece I draw is the quicket) But damn those colours slapped. 8/10 pikmins

I hate drawing comics. This happned with the Kiuri one but that was good, Juliclaude but was words slapped on art. Honey Bat does not escape the curse. The only panels I like are the ones where they say the others name. The colours I struggles, the art and shit I struggled. I hate this jnhbgfghjkl. One of the more distinctive things about Pikmin

So I was thinking about one of the more distinctive things about Pikmin is how failure can embed itself into the experience.

Mario bounces off screen, Link faints, Samus explodes. After this the player is pulled back to the last checkpoint or save file to try again.

If the protagonist is defeated, it doesn't make sense to continue the story. A game over is essentially a bad ending. But as a consequence, failures are treated as if they never happened at all.

In Pokemon, the protagonist doesn't die, and their Pokemon just faint. If all Pokemon faint, the player loses some in-game money and the game continues from a pokemon center.

Pikmin as a game is very different because individual Pikmin are expendable. It's not like the game needs to stop the moment one or even many get killed off; but they're also cute enough that one normally feels a little bad about it as they let out one final wail as their ghosts float upward and disappear.

It gives pikmin a less common trait in that your mistakes become part of the story the player makes by playing the game. All the times Mario falls into to a pit "don't count" in a way, but the deaths of Pikmin are recorded and shown in the line graph of pikmin population and the final count of pikmin deaths that are shown at the end of a day, or a play through.

Mistakes and deaths are more "real" in a game of pikmin.

While on the death planet he finds a cool bottlecap and saves it for his son :) Then when he gets back, his company is bankrupt because his coworker Louie ate a whole shipment of golden carrots and blamed space pirate bunnies. The President of the freight company sells off Olimars cool ship he just pieced back together on the death planet, then the president sees the cool bottlecap is worth more than a years wages and decides "oh yeah I'll take that as a company asset now and sell it to pay out debts, also you and the new hire are going back to the death planet from treasure hunting". And then while there Louie tries to eat every enemy including a ghost which probably possesses him. In any case Louie is heavily implied to end up trying to kill Olimar by piloting the final boss. Olimar just puts up with so much shit and despite it all he still has time to dedicate to his apparent interest of taxonomical research. He almost dies and took the time to think "hey this would be a cool gift for my son" hes so precious he deserves the world i love him"
