Fun fact: Ted Bundy has a daughter with Carol Boone, named Rose, who was conceived while he was in prison awaiting trial for his crimes. It is unknown how she was conceived, since conjugal visits were prohibited at that time. Their romantic relationship started when he was on trial for murdering two women in the Chi Omega sorority house, at FSU. They even got married in the courtroom while the trial was going on.

The Murder of Kimberly Leach
Tumblr media
Kimberly Diane Leach was a 12-year-old schoolgirl, she was in the seventh grade. Kimberly, Kim to her friends, was described as a shy girl who worked hard at school.
On 8th February 1978, Kimberly was excited as her mother had said that afternoon she would take Kimberly shopping for a dress to wear to the upcoming Valentine’s ball. She arrived at school and ate doughnuts with her friend and went to her homeroom before leaving to go to her first class, PE. While in the homeroom Kimberly forgot her purse so went back to get it, she returned to the homeroom, picked up the purse and left, making her way back across campus- she never made it back to her lesson. Kimberly’s teacher assumed Kimberly had just gone to her second class and gave her books to her friend to put in her locker. Kimberly failed to show up at any of her classes that day, and her teachers grew worried and began searching for her. By 5pm when there was still no sign of Kimberly, the police were called.
Kimberly’s friends knew something was wrong immediately, they described how Kimberly never skipped class and was a shy girl who was unlikely to speak to strangers or go anywhere on her own. A witness had seen a girl walking towards a white van with a man he had assumed was her father, the man had brown hair and was clean-shaven and the girl matched Kimberly’s description down to the number on her sports jersey, the girl had looked unhappy but was not resisting. A schoolchild had also seen a slim man in his mid-thirties with brown hair standing near the school. Over 65 witnesses had seen this man in the vicinity of the school Kimberly attended.
In April 1978, about 2 months after Kimberly had gone missing her body was found in a pig shed wooded area, she had been raped and had lacerations to her neck.
Before Kimberly was found, Ted Bundy, a notorious serial killer and wanted fugitive was found when pulled over for a traffic violation. He had recently escaped from prison and was wanted for a string of recent murders of young women. Officers questioned him about Kimberly’s disappearance which he initially denied despite overwhelming evidence including fibres from the jacket he was wearing when arrested being found on her body.
In 1980, Bundy went on trial for the kidnap and murder of Kimberly Leach. He had previously been convicted for the murders of two sorority girls, Lisa Levy and Margaret Bowman, in the infamous Chi Omega attacks. During the trial for Kimberly’s murder, Bundy acted as his own council and asked Carole Ann Boone to marry him. He was found guilty and Bundy received a third death sentence for the murder of Kimberly Leach.
On 24th January 1989, Bundy was executed by electric chair at Florida State Prison. It is believed that Kimberly was his last victim.

Finished The Stranger Beside Me last night!
Thoughts:
that is one HELL of a book, oh man. if you're into true crime, it's one of the definitive works of the genre, and I highly recommend reading it.
I really liked that Ann Rule balanced the story of Ted Bundy and his victims with glimpses of her own life, and her own struggles to realize a guy she considered her friend was a total monster. It's a very interesting perspective.
That said, at no point does she ever romanticize or glamourize Ted Bundy which is a trap a lot of more modern adaptations of his story fall into. She's at best neutral about him, but soon admits to herself that deep down she thinks he's guilty.
That said, she also doesn't yadda-yadda through his life. It's (as far as I can tell) a very honest look at his upbringing, which honestly just makes the story more despicable because he really could have had a good, normal life if he had dealt with his rage at Stephanie Brooks in a less destructive way, or like, saw a therapist about it. But also Bundy's personality is not one that could ever do that, and while I think he could have stopped himself I don't think he would've ever understood why he should put in the effort and therefore wouldn't have anyway so...a lot of complicated emotions here.
By the end of the book I was so enraged I stayed up until 1 am just to finish it so I could stop being angry lol
Anyway, TLDR an excellent true crime story that pulls no punches. The author does her absolute best to do service to the victims and balances their stories with Ted's and her own very neatly. Unclear if I will ever read it again, but I'm glad I read it once.
Also if you do read it, I'd suggest picking up the most recent version with all of Ann Rule's afterwords and extra chapters (the original book ends in 1980, 9 years before Bundy was executed, and there are addendums well into the 2000s. Ann clarifies a lot of her original thoughts and even recants or changes her opinion on some things later, so it's good to get a recent version to see the whole picture.) My copy was from 2008, but I think I'm going to pick up a copy of the more recent version with Georgia Hardstark's foreword someday.
I maintain that Carole Ann Boone should've been hit by a bus the instant she left the courthouse after her little wedding trick. What a despicable thing to do during a murder trial, and on the anniversary of the murder of Bundy's last victim too. Regrettably, she lived to be 70.

Character Actress
Virginia Christine (born Virginia Christine Ricketts; March 5, 1920 – July 24, 1996) was an American stage, radio, film, television, and voice actress. Though Christine had a long career as a character actress in film and television, she is probably best remembered as "Mrs. Olson" (or the "Folgers Coffee Woman") in a string of television commercials for Folgers Coffee during the 1960s and 1970s.
In addition to her work in films, Christine also appeared in numerous television series. In the 1950s, she appeared in multiple guest roles on The Abbott and Costello Show, Four Star Playhouse, Dragnet, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Ford Television Theatre, Gunsmoke, Science Fiction Theatre, Matinee Theatre, Father Knows Best, Trackdown, State Trooper, Wanted: Dead or Alive, The Rifleman, Letter to Loretta, Superman, and General Electric Theater. In November 1959, Christine co-starred as the wife of a verbally abusive hypochondriac in the first-season episode of The Twilight Zone entitled "Escape Clause".
In 1960 and 1961, Christine guest-starred on episodes of Coronado 9, Rawhide, and The Untouchables. From 1961 to 1962, Christine had a recurring role as widow Ovie Swenson in the Western series Tales of Wells Fargo. She made four guest appearances on Perry Mason, including the role of defendant Beth Sandover in the season-six, 1962 episode, "The Case of the Double-Entry Mind", and murderer Edith Summers in the season-seven, 1963 episode, "The Case of the Devious Delinquent". For the remainder of the decade, she continued with guest-starring roles in such shows as 77 Sunset Strip, Ben Casey, Bonanza, The Fugitive, Hazel, Wagon Train, The Virginian, Going My Way, The F.B.I., and Daniel Boone. In 1969, Christine co-starred in the ABC television movie Daughter of the Mind.
Her greatest fame came in 1965 when she began her 21-year stint as the matronly Mrs. Olson, who had comforting words for young married couples while pouring Folgers coffee in television commercials. They became a popular staple on television, whereupon the character began to be parodied by comedians and entertainers, including Carol Burnett, Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Ann-Margret, and Jackie Gleason. She went on to appear in over 100 commercials for Folgers. In 1971, Christine's hometown of Stanton, Iowa, honored her by transforming the city water tower to resemble a giant coffee pot.
During the 1970s, Christine continued to work primarily in television. Her last role was on the 1979 animated series Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo, in which she provided additional voices.  (Wikipedia)

Season three, episode one of NCIS. Kate Todd has just been murdered by rogue Mossad agent Ari Haswari. The team is reeling from her loss and is thrown into another powder-keg.
Kyle Boone, a notorious serial killer, is set to suffer the death penalty by way of electrocution. I always knew he was meant to be their facsimile of Ted Bundy—murdering college women, an oral fixation, smart-ass with authority, desperate attempts to stay his execution-but, what I didn’t connect until just now is Ted’s wife was named Carol Ann Boone. Pretty fuckin’ ballsy move.

"i'm in love with a criminal" ; the true crime community and how they romanticize serial killers.
Tumblr media
OVER the past few years, people have found themselves grasping at straws for any form of entertainment they could indulge themselves in, especially during the times of the COVID-19 pandemic. From dalgona coffees, to home-made slime creations, there are a multitude of ways we distracted ourselves from the looming danger of the virus that has already claimed lives. Including of course, watching television and shows on streaming services like Netflix. There, a certain community fostered for their love of a certain genre, for better or for worse.
The True Crime Community, or TCC for short, are people who are avid fanatics of delving deep into cases of crimes, specifically serial killers and unsolved mysteries. Though they are normally just consumers of the aforementioned genre, there is a certain part of the group that are rather passionate in their admiration, to the point that they idolize the offenders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, this blog post was not made to shun the entirety of the community for a few bad apples; rather, it was made to ponder the question of whether such a group could possibly trivialize and water down the gruesome nature of the real life atrocities that were committed.
It's no secret that some of these criminals are blessed in the form of attractive visages, which unfortunately, led to a handful of their victims to let their guard down more easily. Even with that fact, to be a mere spectator and to claim that they are innocent and must be forgiven is nothing short of inhumane. Such a famous case of this idolization of murderers forming into something unexplainable is the marriage of Carole Anne Boone to Ted Bundy, which even resulted in a daughter despite the latter's imprisonment.
Tumblr media
A handful of these fanatics were also in the same boat as she, having married their serial killer spouses even under the public's much valid scrutiny.
With the creation of video-sharing sites like TikTok and YouTube shorts, information about these criminals are now easily accessible in a more digestible manner in the form of short videos. To the impressionable young users who find these, they might be tricked into thinking that these people are someone to be looked up to instead of shamed, depending on how the person who uploads the information manages to get the message across.
There's a ton of downsides to engaging with such a complicated form of media, but even with this, the saying "Too much is bad" still applies very well. We need to watch and monitor both ourselves and any minds that may be influenced by these kind of things so that we do not do anything we might regret. Enjoying the genre is well and fine, but to romanticize the monsters behind it is not.

In 1974, Carole Ann Boone met Ted Bundy while they both worked in the same office in Olympia, Washington.
“He struck me as a rather shy person with a lot more going on under the surface than what was on the surface,”  Boone said
Though both were still in relationships, they formed a friendship Carole Ann cherished. Between working in the office and maintaining his relationship with Elizabeth Kloepfer, Bundy was brutally killing women.
While in Utah in 1975 Bundy was arrested for the kidnapping of 18 year old Carol DaRonch.
But that didn't stop his friendship with Boone. The two exchanged many letters and Boone visited Bundy in prison frequently.
When Bundy was moved to a Colorado prison, Boone managed to help Bundy gather enough money to later make an escape to Florida where he commited more murders. After being caught, again, Boone moved to Florida and was very vocal about her disagreement with Bundy being in prison.
“The things in Florida don’t concern me any more than the things out west do.” she said.
During the trial Bundy made it clear that he and Boone were romantically involved. Later as Bundy acted as his own attorney, he called Boone to take the stand and asked Boone to marry him.
The two began a regular practice of bribing prison guards so they could have conjugal visits which later resulted in their daughter.
A few years before Bundy was executed in 1989, it's believed he personally confessed his guilt to Carol Ann.
Boone subsequently divorced Bundy and changed her identity several times over the next 30 years.
Carole Ann Boone passed away in 2018.
