Part 33

Damned If I Can’t Slow Dance With You

Light streamed in from the window and merriment continued on the main floor. He turned to you. You covered your mouth with your hands, anticipation making you giddy.

For a moment, everything was still.

“Finally,” Halsin sighed, his voice dripping with sin as he dropped his chin low. He strode toward you on an unalterable course. Crossing the space almost instantly, the druid wove his right hand into your hair, kissing his way down from your lips as his left hand hooked your leg onto his hip. Pinning you against the wall with his frame, he spread your still standing leg off to the side to lean closer. Your eyes almost rolled back at the pressure. His kisses pulsed against your lips. All you could do was moan and try to breath steady as you felt yourself sink into this moment, every ounce of tension melting out of your body. Your fingers crept up his neck and into his hair, loosening the ties and letting it drape further down around his face.

By the time Edward gets there, it's too late. Bolton is gripping Ellen by her shoulders, the Mayor looking on with a sick, smug grin. Ellen herself is terrified, more afraid than Edward's ever seen her. "Daddy!" she shrieks, trying to escape, but Bolton's grip holds firm.

Edward does something he's never done. He gets on his knees and begs. "Please," he says to Sharp. All pride and ego are gone. "I beg you. I'll do anything. Anything!"

Sharp's smirk grows even wider. "It's far too late for that, Nigma." He turns to Bolton and nods. Bolton smiles and moves his hands from Ellen's shoulders to the top of her head and her jaw. She seems to know what's coming, shuts her eyes, and whimpers.

"No!" Edward screams. "No, no no no!"

A crack of bone is the response Edward receives. Ellen's body falls to the ground, limp, her head twisted right round, her face in an eternal grimace. Edward lets out a wail then, a primal scream that seems to come from somewhere deep inside of him. He feels a hand on his shoulder and turns around.

It's a boy. A boy just Ellen's age. A boy in a Robin costume, A boy covered in blood, his face half burned off, an eye hanging out of one socket. "It's okay, Eddie," he says. "I'll take care of her. It's okay, Eddie, Eddie, Eddie..."

"Eddie!"

Edward's eyes flew open. Penny was in his line of sight, her face pale.

"You're dreaming," she said. "It's alright."

Edward's breath came in harsh and deep. "Ellen," he choked out. "Where's Ellen!?"

"At her grandmother's," Penny said. She reached out to cup his face, smoothing his hair back. "We dropped her off there five hours ago. Selina and Batman are watching her. She's safe, Eddie."

Edward took another deep, shuddering breath. Was she?

Chapter 33

And for once, his eyes aren’t dead. They’re on fire. And they’re focused directly. On. Me.

Chapter 33 summary: Jaxon helps Grace climb out the window, and he wraps her up in a blanket so that she’s nice and toasty. However, he’s only wearing a thin hoodie, and refuses to share the blanket with her. So she pointedly asks him if he’s an alien. The resulting conversation is every bit as ridiculous as you might expect. Only that he refuses to tell her exactly what he is. Ugh, I’m over it.

He had brought her out there because there was a meteor shower. And it happens that she somehow wandered up into his private space on the exact right date in time to witness it? Uh-huh. Anyway, so they watch in silence until it’s over.

Then, she thanks him for having been so nice to her. He insists that he isn’t a nice person, and that he doesn’t do nice things for people. But from her perspective… He does. He’s gone out of his way to do things like asking the cook to make her waffles and bring them up to her room.

He then climbs back into his room, and turns around to help her back inside. Except, the act of lifting her up through the window puts them really, REALLY close to one another…

Chapter 34

“Earthquake!” I manage to squeak out, wrenching my mouth from his. Jaxon doesn’t listen at first, just follows my lips with his like he wants to keep on kissing me forever. And I almost let it go, almost melt back into him—I’m a California girl, after all. If it were a bad one, things would already be falling off the walls.

But it must hit Jaxon at the same time I’m about to forget about it, because not only does he let me go, but he’s halfway across the room between one breath and the next.

I watch as he clenches his fists by his sides, as he takes a long, slow, deep breath…and then another and another as the earth continues to shake. “It’s okay,” I tell him. “It’s just a small quake, nowhere near as bad as the one this morning. It’ll be over in a second.”

“You have to go.”

“What?” I couldn’t have heard him right. He couldn’t have been kissing me like he wanted to devour me a few seconds ago and now be demanding that I leave in a voice as cold as the air outside. “It’s fine.”

“It’s not fine,” he snaps out, and it’s the only sign of emotion from him now that his face and eyes are blank again. “You. Need. To. Go!”

Taking bets that it’s Jaxon who is actually causing the earthquakes! With some kind of power that’s tied directly into his emotions!

I turn and run as fast as my weak knees will carry me, determined to get to the staircase, to freedom, before this strange, monstrous version of Jaxon overtakes me. I don’t make it.

Chapter 34 summary: For the longest time, the two of them stand there, staring at each other, not talking. Then Grace randomly tells him that purging herself of her emotions like that feels overwhelming, but you feel so much better once it’s all out.

She then realises that he’s freezing, and tries to warm him up with the blanket. But then she apologises for having stepped into his personal space.

He kisses her, and she’s so happy. But then another earthquake hits. It takes Jaxon a moment to realise what’s happening, and he continues to kiss her for a second. And then when he does realise, he’s suddenly on the other side of the room, and tells her to go. One of the windows explodes in a shower of glass, and he tells her again to leave.

Chapter 35

“Where are you going?” Macy squeaks.

“Where do you think?” I pull open the door. “After Jaxon.”

Chapter 35 summary: Grace wakes up in her bed with Finn, Macy, and the school nurse hovering over her. They tell her that she got her artery nicked by exploding glass, and Jaxon rushed her down to the nurse for treatment.

Again, there’s a lot of talking, but not a lot of point to 90% of what they’re saying. Eventually, Macy and Finn leave to get Grace something to eat, and leaves Grace alone with the nurse.

Finally, Grace fakes being asleep, but “wakes up” when Macy comes back with soup. Grace begs Macy for what really happened, but Macy eventually snaps and says that she was at dance rehearsal, and she wasn’t hanging around the school infirmary.

The entire thing seems kind of suspicious, what with literally the only damage to the school being up in Jaxon’s room, and Grace literally the only one hurt. Plus, it was her neck that was hurt, too. But still. This is progress from Grace thinking that it’s aliens.

Somebody knocks on the door, and Macy thinks that it’s her dad, wanting to check up on Grace. Grace says that she’ll pretend to be asleep, and begs Macy to send him away. But when Macy comes back from sending the person away, she says that it was Jaxon, but he declined to come in. Grace throws back the covers and insists on going after him.
