I watched Grave Encounters 1 and 2 last night and I’ve noticed people don’t seem to like Grave Encounters 2, so here’s my rant on why I think the sequel does not deserve the hate it gets.

1. While yes, the sequel is in a much different format, with the premise being a documentary on Grave Encounters (a film within a film) and thus the found footage is less realistic, I liked how the film was formatted. Without the first half of the film the part inside the asylum would not make a lot of sense. Furthermore, we see the characters interacting normally much more than in the first film, which in my opinion makes them more likeable than the characters from the first film. Thus, the different format lends itself to better character writing and establishes the character’s motivation. While the unlikability of most of the characters of the first movie was on purpose, as it shows how they really feel and act versus their TV personalities, it also makes them hard to feel attached too because of their unlikability, whereas Grave Encounters 2 makes a stronger attempt to create likeable and relatable characters that more people would feel attached to.

2. The sequel directly pokes fun at fans who think they’re smarter and can survive. When it comes to horror movies fans, there are always those fans who automatically think that they would survive simply because they’re smarter, not factoring in that the characters are obviously panicked and unable to sit down and think. In Grave Encounters 2 Alex and his friends try to prepare themselves for the asylum, thinking if they’re better prepared they won’t suffer the same fate Lance’s crew faced, yet in their panic, they make similar mistakes. In both films they see what is obviously an apparition of a dead patient yet still talk to the ghost as if they’re a person and try to communicate with it, because in their panic, they think that the person might help them. Much like how Lance’s crew don’t notice the ever-changing layout and objects moving (such as that one wheelchair that constantly moves during the film) Alex and his friends don’t notice that the “Death Awaits” graffiti is fresher than when Lance was there, which wouldn’t make sense given how much the police seem to be guarding the location. In both films, despite knowing that supposedly the windows open on their own over night, someone stares at the window and gets pulled out of the window instead of immediately leaving when they realized something was wrong.

3. Both films point out how far people can go if pushed in the right direction. With the ghosts psychologically torturing them during the film, both Lance and Alex have a similar response to what’s happening and become very agitated at their lack of choices or control. Similarly, both Lance and Alex will go to any means to escape the torture of the asylum. Lance has been driven to insanity after staying in the asylum for 9 years and being lobotomized, and when the ghosts tell him that he has to kill Alex and his friends in order to leave, he does so, even though Lance seems very upset about it when he kills Trevor. He does not enjoy what he’s done, but he’s endured so much at the asylum that he would do anything to get out. Like Lance, Alex must kill Jennifer in order to leave. Alex does not want to kill Jennifer, but he has seen what the ghosts will do to them if they stay, that they face living like how Lance lived, and Alex cannot face that kind of torture.

4. The sequel acknowledges the first movies faults, with some of the poor effects of the film, in the beginning when various people review the series and give it mediocre reviews. The creators understood that the first Grave Encounters wasn’t perfect and instead of trying to create a perfect sequel, they make a sequel that they know fans would like, even if has similar faults that the first one made. I also think the end where they establish that the series is obviously fake should be there, because people can sometimes take this stuff too seriously and can become seriously distressed watching it. When The Blair Witch Project debuted in 1999, people thought that it was actually real, and the creators had to tell people that it was in fact not real. They acknowledge that by playing the film up as a true story, they may have caused people distress and take accountability for that, knowing that it could have left a negative impact on people.

Now of course, Grave Encounter 2 is not perfect, and I do not think it’s as good as the first movie, but I think all the hate the sequel gets is somewhat unjustified.

Hashirama

What I love about them:

I really love Hashirama's stubborn optimism. I say "stubborn" here bc I think after a certain point of pain in misery in someone's everyday life, in some way it is a choice to remain optimistic despite that suffering. I don't characterize Hashirama as constantly happy and he can recognize the more realistic/pessimistic possibilities, he just refuses to accept them. I have it in my notes for OoT but haven't worked it in verbatim but Madara would call him "ruthlessly optimistic " and while that's tinged with Madara's own bias, I think it fits quite well.

What I hate about them:

Hashirama is stubbornly optimistic LOL. It's a double-edged sword and I think by the time he reached adulthood in a canon setting, Hashirama was so desperate for there to be peace he maintained his "everything will work out" attitude when he otherwise shouldn't have. There were the concerns with Madara and the Uchiha, his own brothers views that he certainly should have recognized could become a problem, and, after depending on when Tobirama took on students/how old they were, the possibility of biases being passed down and a Danzo like figure coming to power. However this was not Hashirama's responsibility alone to fix. I don't think, despite his love, Hashirama alone could have kept Madara in a village that hated him and a clan that distrusted him. Tobirama was an adult and let his own bias pass under a veil of "logic" and passed that, either intentionally or unintentionally down to his students. None of this is Hashirama's fault, but I think part of the canon story being a tragedy was he was blinded by a bright, hopeful future that he failed to see the early signs right in front of him.

Favorite Moment/Quote:

"To me, Madara was like a gift from the divine."

Even thinking about it makes me melt. It's so sweet and really emphasizes how much Madara means to him. 🥺

What I would like to see more focus on:

In fics? Hashirama's mental health and how his childhood affected him. Most of the long fics I've read focus on Madara. Which I understand, Madara has an arc into becoming a villain while Hashirama is just kinda "there" and it's easy for him to fulfill a support role to helping Madara in canon Au fics. A sort of unshakeable, always optimistic stone for Madara to depend on and stop his downward spiral into villainy. But, what makes hashimada so great for me is that Madara and Hashirama are equals. There will be times one falters and needs to depend on the other, and they're capable of giving each other that support. It'd also be great to see Hashirama struggle yet continue to choose optimism and compassion time after time because that feels more weighty and important than an eternally optimistic characterization that never wavers.

Headcanon wise...this isn't something I've found but desperately want to see (and will come up in all of my own aus) is the connection between the god tree and the god of shinobi who's famed ninjutsu is wood release and who's cells can be used for everything under the sun and are specifically needed to control the gedo statue / ten-tails. 👀 Look when I got back into Naruto and only vaguely knew about the war arc plot I thought Kishimoto was Doing Something with that. He was not. I am.

What I would like to see less focus on:

This is pretty much mentioned above but Hashirama as mainly a support for Madara rather than getting his own (non romantic) arcs in long canon Au fics. Headcanon wise, this is such a small nitpick, but Hashirama constantly being the one described as warm whereas Madara is cold. The big tree can *retain* heat, but he pales in comparison to Madara's ability to *generate* heat.

Favorite pairing with:

Hashimada (Hashirama x Madara)

No one should be surprised. I can wax prose about this for days but it's about ultimately finding someone else in a terrible world that *understands* you that you can grow with and support. I'm a sucker for friends to lovers and battle couples so guess what's right up my alley?

Favorite friendship:

Canon/BoaF- Hashirama & Mito

I know Madara & Mito is more popular, and I do love their dynamic but christ Hashirama needs friends outside Madara and Tobirama and I think they'd be good friends. Canon!Mito would provide a good level-headed perspective and wouldn't have the messy, complicated history like the three founders have together and it'd be good for Hashirama to get a break from that. BoaF!Mito and Hashirama are cousins their relationship eventually progresses to a sibling-like bond. They’re quite protective of each other and gossip endlessly together. Mito’s not as good as gardening, but they do it together and incorporate Uzumaki sealing techniques for certain houseplant decorations. Mito also might know about Madara 👀

OoT-Hashirama & Sakura or Hashirama & Sai

His and Sakura's relationship is p similar to how I would characterize his and Mito's but with the added hilarity of Sakura being his "student" yet having 0 deference for him once they actually get to the "teaching" part (surprise: Hashirama's most uttered lines are "you do the thing, you know the thing, you know you just...do it. The thing. Madara "translates" a lot of their sessions.) Hashirama and Sai antagonize each other constantly and he *will* tease Sai into oblivion as any older brother would. Tobirama never reacted to Hashirama's mischief in ~fun~ ways and he felt bad about messing with Itama, who was even more emotional than he was and Kawarama, who hero-worshipped him. Sai is the perfect "if anyone messes with you I will personally make them regret being born yet *I* will tease you mercilessly to my hearts content" kind of little brother.

NOTP:

Hashitobi (Hashirama x Tobirama)

I don't do incest. At all. Even "non-incest" aus where they aren't technically related squick me out.

Favorite headcanon:

Hashirama can Speak to the trees.

Either humorously or seriously, I love this kinda, sorta, maybe not quite human power.

Madara

What I love about them:

Madara is kind and does his best to do what he thinks is right. The “kind” point is a lot of Hashirama talking/flashbacks and the “good” intention behind the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Making everyone a “winner” in the dreamworld, while absolutely insane and full of holes, is odd for a villain’s motivation. His role in the war arc is mostly focused on watching him wreck absolutely everyone he comes into contact with but I love Hashirama’s flashbacks and the glimpses of kid!Madara we get. Madara believed in his philosophy from a lifetime of pain that ended in him losing everything and being manipulated but he was still seeking a way to “help” the most people he could. He’s such a rich character that makes it easy to want to imagine other what-if scenarios where things turned out just a bit differently.

What I hate about them:

Madara takes all responsibility onto himself. This is more speculation because we don’t get Madara’s POV of his childhood or any significant scenes with the clan. However, I think this is one of the primary roots of most of Madara’s problems. If he blamed himself for mistakes that weren’t technically his, he could get into a cycle where he only blames himself and doesn’t seek help/support when he should have and purposefully reduces his support circle because he becomes paranoid that he won’t be able to protect them. A smaller issue that is both about Madara and not is he didn’t fall victim to the Talk no Jutsu, but was Madara aware of what was happening when he was possessed(?) by Kaguya? I forgot but if he wasn’t...I don’t think he’d agree Hashirama’s way was the right way at the end, merely his way was wrong. Because, in Madara’s point of view, the village may have been “better” (used very loosely) than becoming food/power for an alien goddess but it wasn’t good. It wasn’t the solution. Hashirama saying they were both wrong in some way saved the scene but Madara still jumped back to Hashirama’s dream being the right one too quickly imo.

Favorite Moment/Quote:

“What are you going to do about the second [meteor] Onoki?”

I’m sorry, that was just hilarious. We see this man slaughter an entire division and drop a meteor from the sky...two kages desperately try to stop it and it looks like they managed to succeed and he just...cool. What about the second? Really cemented Madara is Here and he is Dramatic. A close second fav is him flying across the battlefield to confront Hashirama only for the “I’ll deal with you later” line.

What I would like to see more focus on:

I really love it when fics fill in the blanks of Madara’s childhood/his time with the Uchiha so that’s always a plus for me. The other thing is Hashirama calls Madara a “fundamentally kind man” and according to Tobirama the Uchiha feel love “too deeply” so I like fics that do focus on these aspects of Madara’s personality while staying true to his prickly demeanor. For headcanons I love, love, love exploring kekkei genkai/ninjutsu/genjutsu and how they individually affect people/clans. Digging deeper so that “fire affinity” means constantly running hot/pushing into possibly having fire resistance/unable to distinguish “too hot” / or even affinity acting like a secondary blood type so even if two people had AB blood if one had a water affinity and the other fire their blood would be incompatible. Also the mundane ways powers can be used (I have some Ideas for non-combat genjustu applications that the Uchiha use and those will come up in OoT 👀)

What I would like to see less focus on:

This again kinda ties into the Hashirama segments, but Madara completely depending on Hashirama and Hashirama alone for happiness. Especially in long AUs where he’s still in Konoha but has a poor relationship with the Uchiha. That’s fine starting out! But if the fic ends or doesn’t seriously work on improving that relationship it just sits a bit weird with me bc I don’t think Madara could be truly happy in that situation. (NSFW start) The other thing I see commonly is Madara is extremely passive/submissive in bed with Hashirama which is...weird to me? There’s also a reoccurring thing where he doesn’t have a lot of experience but Hashirama does and this leads to embarrassment and the aforementioned passive/submissiveness. I understand lack of experience can be embarrassing and I do believe Madara could be embarrassed, but instead of withdrawing into himself I think he’d push through it with something close to bravado and his usual single-minded intensity, for better or worse. I do think Madara usually bottoms in his and Hashirama’s relationship but both of them are as enthusiastic about sex as they are fighting and neither is especially submissive or dominant. (NSFW end)

Favorite friendship:

Canon/BoaF- Madara & Naori or Madara & Hikkaku

I really like focusing on the Uchiha clan and exploring the dynamics within it. We get nothing about Madara’s early life outside of Hashirama so this is almost completely speculation. For the angst of canon, I like Madara being close to his clan only to lose them after his friendship with Hashirama is revealed bc he awakened his sharingan over Hashirama and that can’t be easily hidden. For BoaF, a large part of it is exploring the clans’ cultures before they made the village so this necessitates actually fleshing out said clans. Naori and Izuna are v similar in personality and both live to prank Madara and annoy him, but they hardly ever team up bc they start squabbling amongst themselves. Hikakku is stoic and calm in contrast to Naori’s mania and Madara’s intensity but he keeps track of every little favor and Madara dreads the day he’ll act on them because he knows it’ll result in something embarrassing for him. But like all BoaF!Uchiha, they’re fiercely protective of one another and you really don’t want to insult the wrong person.

OoT - Madara & Naruto or Madara & Sai

I really Madara and Naruto’s dynamic, it’s very entertaining and fun for me to write and they’re both positive influences on each other. Madara gets more people to smother with his brand of affection and Naruto gets early recognition and training. Their weird non-training shenanigans (coupon collecting, gaming, etc.) also is p amusing. Madara and Sai have a similar relationship but I really like writing theirs from Sai’s POV bc he insists that he doesn’t feel close/like when Madara treats him like a little brother when he really does.

NOTP:

Madatobi (Madara x Tobirama)

Logically, I know why this pairing is popular. Fanfic is saturated with the enemies to lovers trope yet emotionally I Do Not Understand it. Personally, I don’t enjoy toxic relationships, to read or write. And, to me, that’s what a close canon Madara and Tobirama pairing would be. Tobirama tried to convince Hashirama to kill him, he killed Izuna, even if it was in war, and I don’t think Madara could or would get over that. If Tobirama has similar attitudes about the Uchiha it makes it worse. AUs exist to rewrite this, of course, but I still don’t enjoy their romantic chemistry. At best, I like Tobirama and Madara as reluctant frenemies who insult each other and try to one-up each other.

Favorite headcanon:

Madara is fire proof.

I have a whole rant about this in OoT’s author notes 😂 Sasuke’s Amaterasu should have been a serious threat when it hit him. Instead the man just lets his clothes fall off then kicks their asses. He’s fire proof.

ha. okay. i know i said i was leaving. but i have been having some thoughts i wanted to share.

i’ve been thinking a lot about what led me to a place of such intense disappointment with ep 118. i think a lot of widojests have been asking themselves the same thing - how did i stack the odds so against myself? how did i get my expectations to such a high place? and for me, at least, the more i think about it, the more i realize my mistake was in thinking of cr as a story.

i mean. no matter how you look at it, you have to admit that from a storytelling standpoint, fjorester is.... strange. a bit nonsensical. a bit tone deaf to the themes of the characters. it’s just kinda poor storytelling. in my opinion. in what world do writers create a world and storyline and characters like c2 and then pick........ uh......... that......... as their romantic plotline? in what world is the damsel’s story about learning that life and romance is not like a book and that embracing her individual identity and strength is something to be celebrated, and then her love interest the guy she met at the beginning of the story who she crushed over and was rejected and ignored by for months, only to be suddenly approached again in a romantic sense for maybe a month? a few weeks? before getting together with him? over the other figure in her life who has been consistently supplying emotional support and encouraging those elements of beauty in individuality that is not pretty or clean, stepping in when the crush wasn’t there and expecting nothing in return? i mean? in today’s landscape? objectively a dissatisfying storytelling choice.

but when you look at it from a gameplay standpoint, it becomes fun. it becomes “aw the husband and wife get to rp a romance together, how cute”. it’s the fun option you pick because screw it, you like it and it’s fun to pursue this romance, it doesn’t have to make sense, it’s a game.

there is nothing fundamentally wrong with it, either way, but one is a fun game with plot and one is a..... mediocre story at best. realistically, a dissatisfying and disappointing one.

and the issue with cr is that the line between story and game is so often blurred. and, you know what, well deserved, because it often does do both. the cast refer to what they do as storytelling pretty often. but the thing is, they’re not really creating a full story, per se. they’re creating an improvised permanent first draft. that’s not the same thing as a story. a story is revised over and over again, looked at from different perspectives, rethought and redone until the ideas are best conveyed. a first draft is the thing that has all of the clunky bits, the mistakes, the things that in revision you look back on and think “wait, with the things i’m trying to convey, that doesn’t make sense, actually. let me do that again.”

cr can’t do that. what they do is what they do. now, there is a really interesting element to that, where if there is something that’s maybe not quite right they have to build from that in order to get what they wanted from that moment. it makes it more like real life. and i think that’s interesting. but it is also endlessly frustrating - how many conversations have i wished had happened? how many dynamics do i feel like are wasted and unexplored? how many plot points are expanded or sped through in unsatisfying ways? in a dnd game those things don’t matter as much. in a story, they do.

i mean, i would be really excited to see where the story would go if i thought that those elements of having to build from dissatisfactory decisions would lead to explorations of the areas where fjord and jester clash with each other. what happens when he wants to spend the rest of his life at sea? what happens when jester stays close with artagan her whole life? what happens when jester wants to be independent and fjord’s first instinct is to protect, not support her? what happens when she wants to be treated like the adult she is and he continues to see her as unpredictable and childish and innocent? if they actually confronted those things i might actually enjoy this development. it would highlight all of the most interesting things about their character arcs and force them to develop in interesting ways.

but uh. i kinda doubt it? and that sucks. i really want to believe that confrontation of those elements could be possible, but the general consensus that ive gotten through internet osmosis seems to be that the cast are happy about this development and parts of the fandom that are also happy feel like those of us who don’t like it need to just suck it up and deal with it, because this is what we’ve got. that doesn’t really scream, “this story is a living thing that could change and is willing to explore the not good things about this relationship that could and probably would break it” to me.

and so, i guess i got invested in cr as a story, not as a game. which was bound to bring me to disappointment some day. you can’t get a perfect story from an improvised first draft. but after everything that this show has done amazingly, it’s just. so disappointing. ugh.

KOTLC: Flashback Review [WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD]

Keeper of the Lost Cities: Flashback by Shannon Messenger ★★☆☆☆

That little blurb/intro in the beginning? Hmmm, intense. Like, way more directly and upfront intense than the rest of the series has been, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad thing.

Alvar’s sentencing was a really interesting choice, but I feel like bringing in all the Vackers was a little unnecessary. There were just too many opinions to follow, and it did make Fallon Vacker a little less of the interesting enigma that he previously was.

Fitz’s outburst wasn’t totally uncalled for, but he could have definitely dialed it back. I mean, he wasn’t as close to Alvar as Biana was, and his younger sister wasn’t reacting as explosively. This does show that Fitz is consistent (his outburst in Exile), but it did feel a little repetitive when he kept yelling out about how much he hated Alvar. We get it dude, Alvar sucks. But so do Lady Gisela, Quan Song, and Mai Song. And let’s not forget that Wylie’s just scarred, after what happened to Prentice and his mom.

Whom the heck is Luzia Vacker? Why bring in another Vacker only to make them relevant for a little bit and then take them out again? We, as a fandom, already went through that with Kenric, and trust be we’re all still sobbing about that. Not to forget Marella, who is suddenly relevant again?

Dex’s technopathic skills. Goodbye everyone else’s abilities, Dex is a genius who is finally, getting some sort of credit, even if it’s from the council, and not his friends, I am desperate and will take it, at this point.

Speaking of Dex, it was nice to see him standing up for himself against Alvar.

And Fitz is mad again, and yelling at Dex and then Keefe, and then Sophie, quiznak, dude, anger management and a therapist will do you wonders.

Also, why didn’t Sophie stand up for Dex? She did *technically* side with Alvar’s sentencing, she spoke with Keefe and Ro about it. Besides, Dex is her best friend, who was there for her when Fitz and Biana definitely were not. Dex was also her first friend and they’ve been through a lot together.

This would’ve also helped with fixing their relationship a little after the events of Nightfall, and would’ve been a stronger argument for women and men being friends without having to make things romantic. (This can *technically* be said for Fitz or Keefe, but they’ve both been hinted as the possible end games.)

“‘Don’t even get me started on Dex,’ Fitz muttered.

‘I know,’ Biana said quietly. ‘I can’t believe he knew for a week and didn’t tell us.’

Sophie opened her mouth to defend Dex but swallowed back the words. She could tell Fitz and Biana weren’t ready to hear them.

Fitz must’ve noticed, though, because he reeled toward her. ‘Don’t tell me you’re okay with this.’”(Shannon Messenger, Flashback).

This just disappointed me so much, because Biana had finally come so far in getting to know Dex and so had Fitz, but they just couldn’t see any other perspectives.

The little Ro and Keefe bet was super cute. It was nice to see Keefe goofing around again, and Ro’s personality is just so fun.

Alden and Della wanting to get to know their son again? Valid, they are completely valid for that, except for the fact that they seem a little too interested in getting to know Alvar and a little less in oh he was a murdered and he kidnapped my son’s girlfriend and her best friend and tortured them, but he doesn’t even remember now, so that’s okay.

Keefe defending Sophie was cute, as always, but what was that whole thing with “Especially Foster” and the look he and Alden shared? I’m calling shenanigans. Let’s break it down:

Theory: Keefe knows about Fitz’s crush on Sophie and doesn’t want him to hurt her. ( See Exile. )

Easily possible, so easily possible. And this is aside from Keefe just generally defending Sophie regularly.

Theory: Fitz knows about Keefe’s crush on Sophie and he knows that Keefe knows about his crush on Sophie.

Also not that far fetched, they’re best friends and probably talked before Keefe joined the Neverseen.

Theory: Alden asked Keefe to back off.

It would explain the whole look thing but Alden’s never really showed particular interest in that kind of thing. My shipper heart wants to agree with this, but realistically? Probably not true.

Theory: Alden and Keefe are both remembering the events of Exile.

This is probably more likely, considering that Fitz threw a huge tantrum there too and both Alden and Keefe tried to calm him down. This is my best bet about what that whole looking thing was.

Quiznak, who actually believed Alvar when he was whining about being innocent? I have to give it to Fitz, he had a good point about Alvar’s acting being intense. As it turned out, Alvar wasn’t acting, but he did join the Neverseen again. No surprise there.

This was a pretty polarizing event. If you ask me, it didn’t make sense for them to capture Alvar and not gain anything from it or for him to claim innocence for an entire book only to regain his memories and rejoin the villains. The two actions cancelled each other out and left it so that it was as if they’d never captured him in the first place.

Weapons? Uh, quick question, what the heck? Sophie’s spent this entire time ( like six books worth of time ) wanting to be different from the Neverseen, Vespera, and Lady Gisela. She’s even concerned, at one point, that Project Moonlark made her a natural killer, but she just throws all of that out the window and starts up an initiative to fight back?

This seemed really out of character. I don’t know what else to say, especially since elves’ minds can’t handle violence? And Sophie proposed an initiative centered around violence?

What was that entire fight scene? Sophie inflicts, but whoops, there go Fitz, Grizelle and Sandor? Sophie’s outnumbered, so she calls Dex and Wylie? I’m sorry, did we miss something? Wylie wasn’t really a main character prior to Flashback, which is fine, but how is hanging out with Dex all of a sudden?

Side note, Wylie was great, he kicked some Neverseen butt and gave it to them, it was probably one of the better moments in the book.

I feel like we had more of Sophie getting all hot and bothered over Fitz rather than actual plot.

The death of Umber was very anticlimactic, but I have a theory that she’s actually Lady Zillah, Tam’s Shade Mentor. Call it a hunch, Shannon Messenger hasn’t introduced characters to Sophie and/or Mr. Forkle and more of the gang unless they’re important to the plot.

Lady Gisela, Marella, Brant, Magnate Leto, Tiergan, Quentin, Physic/Livy, Amy, Vika, Stina, Luzia, Tarina, Cladfael, Wylie, need I go on?

BUT the majority of the book was just Sophie and Fitz flirting while on bed rest. They spent way too long recovering, and I preferred Nightfall’s way of handling an injury in one half of the love triangle, even if Keefe’s my favorite character. Nothing happened while they were lying there, which is so unreasonable, because when Keefe was out of the picture, they went to Nightfall, but when Fitz got injured, Sophie insisted on being bedside the entire time?

There was also the matter of Fitz choosing Sophie over his family which, yeah, was kind messed up. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Biana was hurting too. Alden and Della were hurting too. Honestly, Sophie was probably the least affected here, especially considering that she pitied Alvar and believed that he shouldn’t be punished for things he didn’t remember doing.

How was Sophie more injured than Fitz when he needed to be on bed rest and sedated constantly? I know she’s the main character and all, but it’s okay to let the other characters develop too. In that sense, Fitz has had the least development, while Biana was injured and got over it, Keefe lost who he was and is still trying to find himself, Linh got over her fear of her powers, Dex acknowledged his crush on Sophie and got over it, and now Tam is starting to get over his hesitance when it comes to using his powers. Even Stina’s getting over her prejudices, but no such development from Fitz.

He’s still focused on being cognates and solely that, but he has so much more potential! He might not be my favorite character, but I know there’s more to him than “I’m in love with Sophie now,” and “I want to be Cognates” and “I hate Alvar, ra-ra, now I’m mad.”

I was hoping to see more development especially since the book seemed to focus on Fitz so much, but I guess not.

Sophie has a bodyguard from every single intelligent species? There was a tumblr post that seemed to describe this perfectly, about how by the end of the series the entire Keeper crew will have at least 98127354392 bodyguards.

Not going to lie, that’s a bit extreme. Five bodyguards? One from each species?

It’s also definitely not helping the idea that all of the species are equal, it makes the elves seem far more superior, and that’s not in Sophie or the Black Swan’s favor. In my opinion, that was unnecessary. ( Especially Bo, but that’s only because he was a huge jerk. )

Whenever Keefe was there, it seemed like everyone was hating on him or he was moping. There’s more to his character than the screw-up troublemaker, hasn’t he proved himself yet?

The monocle pendant was a mistake, and I’ll say that for the people in the back. He didn’t give it to her so they could track her on purpose. The poor boy’s smitten with her, he would never do that. He just didn’t think it through, and it resulted in this.

“...and then I wasn’t even there to help you fight, because I promised Alden . . .’

‘Promised Alden what?’ Sophie asked, glancing between the two of them.

Keefe shook his head. ‘It doesn’t matter’”(Shannon Messenger, Flashback).

Guys, I have no idea what’s going on here, but I really don’t like it. They shouldn’t be sidelining the one person who worked with the Neverseen.

Shadowflux. The seemingly unnecessary introduction to an already complex plot. Thoughts:

Unnecessary. The plot was already complex enough, and it didn’t even touch on the Lodesar Initiative that two books spent worrying about. Not to mention it didn’t help connect the title to the plot in any way either.

Not to mention the fact it focused on the echoes way more than the rest of the plot, which has been built up for so long now.

There were barely any interactions with the whole gang, or really any other characters other than Fitz. We didn’t even get much time with Edaline and Grady, who bonded with Sophie in Nightfall and every book prior to Flashback.

“‘Cool. Now how about you try that again with the truth?’”(Shannon Messenger, Flashback). This was really cute, and honestly, I was so glad that they brought Keefe back in. He (and Dex) have a really great way of reducing the stress and tension and just grounding these larger than life characters. I would’ve loved more Dex and Keefe time, but I’m not writing the series so…

“‘Did you let Fitz win?’

‘Psh, like I’d ever do that!’

‘I don’t know . . . ,’ Ro told him—and he sent her a death glare.

‘That’s different,’ he insisted.

‘Not really,’ she grumbled. ‘But it’s your call.”(Shannon Messenger, Flashback). What could this possible mean? ( could you hear the sarcasm? ) I really don’t like the idea of Fitz or Keefe just giving up like that, with zero communication. They were supposed to be best friends, but instead, Keefe’s avoiding Fitz and Fitz is blaming Keefe and just being a total jerk about his mom. Get your act together!

I was disappointed that Silveny asked for Fitz before Keefe, considering that she knew about Keefe first.

Theory: Silveny can pick up on Sophie’s feelings, and with Fitzphie canon now, she probably sensed Sophie’s feelings for Ftiz and responded.

“Keefe flashed the smuggest of smiles. ‘It’s because I make everything better.’

‘Like giving Sophie the pendant that helped the Neverseen find her?’ Fitz snapped back”(Shannon Messenger, Flashback). So no best friend bonding then?

Ro standing up for Keefe slayed me. It was so nice to see her taking Sophie’s place as moral support and being there for him whenever Fitzphie go too intense or Lord Pretentious started acting up.

Not to mention Tinker, who was brought up once and then never really mentioned again, with the exception of the null. I hope she’ll be back, otherwise that entire section/chapter would be unnecessary.

Okay, this is the end of part 1! Wow, that’s a lot longer than I’d planned, guess I just had a lot to say. Let me know what y’all think in the comments below! I’m just going to do one giant post for this, because it is long.

3. Favorite heroine? Tess, of the d'Urbervilles as well as my HEART. I literally have a statue of her in my library. 4. Favorite hero? Frederic Henry. I have so many, many feelings about Frederic Henry. He has enough rank to get into the better restaurants! He’s an architect and SPEAKS ITALIAN! Appreciates fine pasta! Friends with everyone! And according to Catherine, handsome as hell and outrageously good in bed!

5. Favorite minor/supporting character? Kerry Holiday in This Side of Paradise. The definition of minor, but he’s endearing as hell.

6. Funniest character? Literally anyone in The Importance of Being Earnest. The obvious choice is Algernon, but my personal favorite is Jack. “Gwendolen, I must get christened at once!”

7. Character you kinda-sorta have a crush on? Lawrence Selden. He collects books even though he’s ~poor! He is parfait!

9. Best ending? A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

11. Currently reading? Eugene Onegin! 14. Worst book you’ve read? Heart of Darkness was rooooooooooooouuuuuggggh.

15. Most overrated book? PRIDE AND FUCKING PREJUDICE. It’s good, I enjoyed it, but the amount of overwhelming adulation it gets from literally everyone is just mind-boggling to me. 17. Most underrated book? Le Grand Meaulnes, at least in America.

19. Best love story? Anna Karenina, the Levin and Kitty parts. The fact that she initially rejects him makes it even sweeter, because by the time he comes back, she’s grown so much and you can tell that turning him down was the worst mistake of her life. The payoff is incredible - the proposal scene is the cutest one in literature, and the part where Levin comes back the next morning and kisses her after wandering the streets all night drunk on joy is just sheer brilliance. (Also, at their wedding when they’re so into their vows that they’re too confused to actually perform the ceremony. CUTE KIDS.)

20. Most realistic book? Full disclosure: I did not fight in the Spanish Civil War, but I’m still going to say For Whom the Bell Tolls. That book is not read, it’s experienced. The only thing that’s sliiiightly unbelievable is Maria being ‘cured’ by falling head-over-heels in love with Robert Jordan within thirty seconds of meeting him. Everything else is good and can stay.

22. Favorite outfit description from a book? Kitty’s all-pink dress and matching pink slippers from her first ball in Anna Karenina. 23. Who would you cast to play your favorite character in a movie adaptation? I demand that Elle Fanning play a teenage Eloise in a big-screen adaptation of Eloise in Paris. I DEMAND IT.

24. Character you would most want to be friends with? Rosalind from As You Like It. She’s sassy and fun and has a diverse wardrobe I can steal from. And Marguerite from La Dame Aux Camelias, because she comes complete with an unending stream of flowers, candy, and opera tickets.

25. Most-hated character? ANGEL FUCKING CLARE. I CAN’T EVEN. YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE BROUGHT THIS UP I WANT TO WAVE HIS DECAPITATED HEAD ON A STICK IN FRONT OF HIS WEEPING MOTHER! Just a quick recap: Proposes to Tess a gazillion times and pressures her into marrying him despite her telling him to stop. Once they get married, he abandons her because she was raped, even though he slept around CONSENSUALLY before he met her. He repeatedly insults her to her face and mocks her for considering her rape to be a serious subject. Ditches her and almost immediately asks her best friend to come be his mistress in a foreign country. Eventually forgives Tess, but does JACKSHIT to get her out of England, tells her they won’t meet again in heaven even though that’s the LAST QUESTION she asks him before she dies, and then marries her sister. What a catch.

26. What do you consider to be The Great American Novel? (Or your own country’s version of it, of course.) Biased answer: The Great Gatsby. Unbiased answer: Huckleberry Finn (but also Gatsby).

30. Favorite couples? Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley for the Feelings, Nick Carraway and Jordan Baker for the Wit.

SUPERVERSIVE: “Brand New Animal” is the first great show of the year!

So the winter anime season was all right.

I liked a few shows, some I even liked quite a bit, but none of them were GREAT. None of them lived up to the best shows of winter 2019, “Kaguya-Sama: Love is War” and especially “The Promised Neverland”.

True, I didn’t see “Dorohedro” yet. But even so – its reputation is good, not great.

The spring season, however, is a different story. FINALLY, we have a great show: Trigger’s (Who else?) “Brand New Animal” is an absolute blast to watch!

“Brand New Animal” is the story of Micheru, a teenage girl who one day randomly transforms into a Tanuki-person (a raccoon-dog with a long history in Japanese folklore). In this world, beastpeople are a separate species who have the ability to change between human and beast forms (humanoid animals) at will.

Since the beastmen have publicly revealed themselves they’ve faced persecution from humanity, so in response they formed Animacity, a city founded by beastmen and meant for beastmen. With nowhere else to go and unsure what’s going on, Micheru decides that making for Animacity is better than staying locked in her home, and thus our story starts.

Let’s start off with the biggest issue of BNA: It makes no sense. When the series starts off, Micheru is stuck in her beast form, so that’s fine. It gives her a good reason to need to escape to Animacity. But the regular beastmen? Who even cares? They can turn into humans at any time. They’re basically just regular humans with superpowers. Why would their ability to transform cause people to persecute them? Worst comes to worst, don’t transform with people around. It’s the X-Men problem.

The strangest part is how easy it is to correct this issue. Just don’t give the beastmen human forms. There, problem solved. But their worldbuilding is immediately janked from the word go thanks to this silly aesthetic choice.

Annnnnnd that out of way let’s talk about everything this series does right.

Plus, A+ facial expressions

First off: It’s a Trigger show, and if any of you know Trigger shows you won’t be surprised to hear that it looks incredible. The animation is smooth and fluid, and right there in episode 1 we get to watch an absolutely sick action scene. The soundtrack is also excellent.

Of course, those are aesthetic elements, and while those matter, there are more important things. As you’d expect, the typical Trigger style can’t help but be fun: Loud, over the top, and always trying to top itself with the sheer insanity of its visuals. BNA is also very, very funny, with a lot of great sight gags and fun physical comedy as everybody rolls with the sheer insanity of what happens onscreen. Episode 5, where Micheru is roped into joining a baseball team, is the most Kill La Kill-ish episode of the show and absolutely hilarious.

Huge hole in the premise aside, the world BNA creates is endlessly intriguing. From episode 1 we’re hit with shadowy conspiracies, terrorist attacks, evil corporations, and beastmen mafia that engages in beastmen trafficking. We even get a nifty twist where the poor put upon women manipulated by the evil men turn out to not be quite so innocent after all.

Which is a good segue into the characters. Micheru is one of the best and more realistic teenagers I’ve seen in fiction in a good while. She has a good heart but she’s sort-sighted and self-centered, but not in a malicious way. She acts like a typical teenager, in other words: She makes dumb mistakes and doesn’t think through all of the consequences of her actions but she also wants to help and is likable enough. Micheru is an easy character to root for, with enough going on plot-wise to make her compelling.

Shirou, our deuteragonist, a fairly standard noir detective, but he gets some killer action scenes and there’s a mystery surrounding his apparent invulnerability that makes him a little more interesting than the stock version of that character. And the many minor characters rounding out the cast are colorful and fun.

Finally, it is probably necessary to address the elephant in the room: “Beastars”.

Yes, “Beastars” has a lot of similarities to BNA. They are both noir, both feature mysteries as major plot points, and obviously both take place in worlds featuring humanoid beastmen. They also share a lot of the same themes, specifically unjust prejudice against outgroups and the difficulties of coexistence.

“Beastars” handles its themes much better. Its worldbuilding is much more robustly constructed, and its conflicts follow from the way its society is structured, a stark contrast to the unfortunate hole in the premise of BNA.

“Beastars” also has a better soundtrack. BNA’s is great, but “Beastars” is much more original and memorable as a result.

On the flipside, while “Beastars'” CGI style does look extremely cool it is hard to look at its somewhat jerky animation and say it looks better than BNA, which looks consistently amazing. “Beastars'” few action scenes are exciting enough but pale in comparison to BNA’s.

“Beastars'” writing may be a lot tighter but this is partially because BNA is much more ambitious, with various conflicts swirling around many different characters and Micheru’s struggles only being a small part of this story. “Beastars” certainly covers a lot of territory but Trigger’s bread and butter is BIG, and BNA is absolutely no exception to this. Make no mistake, that is a positive, because there’s always something to pay attention to and think about.

BNA is also much, much funnier than “Beastars”.

So which of the two shows is better? I think you have to say “Beastars”, if only because it doesn’t bungle its premise so dramatically, but the shows are different in a lot of ways to the point that no matter what you think of “Beastars” it’s still worth watching BNA anyway. The experience is very different.

The word I keep coming back to with BNA is FUN. The show is really, really fun. It looks great, it’s interesting, it’s exciting, and it’s endlessly addictive. BNA is the first show of 2020 that ranks up there with the best of 2019.

Avengers: Infinity War

How's every little thing, night human? Alright, alright Have you seen this already, or should I avoid spoilers for it? (I haven't seen the one that just came out) I haven't. Aha, gotcha. I'm seeped deeply enough in your pop culture that I know how it plays out, however. *nodnods* Loki looking all awkward there. "we KIND OF just had an apocalypse there" As one does. Hello! I mean, it was a good try.

A knife, though? A knife of all things? Thanos is INCREDIBLY dumb. It could have worked. Small spoiler, don't wait for the post credit scene in endgame, there isn't one Oh, huh. Breaking the tradition, huh? Now the biggest question, is does the gauntlet count mechanical life forms as 'alive' enough to erase? I don't want people disappointed like I was His comment about ~sparing half of humanity~ made it sound like he was deliberately choosing who would live and die, at least on a species level. Hm, we don't see any erased by the click, but that doesn't mean that they aren't So I guess it would depend on whatever terrible opinions Thanos himself has. She called him Nick I had to explain that symbol to so many people after the movie ...okay, I'd shop here I need this shop same Okay, maybe not. A feel good way to end the evening. How to prepare for an adventure to a hut in New Zealand

Is there anything better waking up in the pristine wilderness? Surrounded by beautiful nature off the grid?

It’s no secret Aotearoa has a lot to offer in terms of natural beauty, and hiking in New Zealand can change your life and teach you some very valuable life lessons.

Pristine rivers, towering mountains, friendly locals, amazing native bird conservation. I’ve already blabbed on and on about what an amazing country this is but, despite all of its unique qualities, my hands down favorite part of New Zealand is the hut system, little basic cabins that are dotted all over the national parks and backcountry that are accessible by hiking, boating, biking, 4WD, ect.

Other countries have hut systems as well but none extensive or cheap as New Zealand.

Sure you can stay on mountain-top lodges in Italy that will cost you a pretty penny but here in New Zealand, you can experience the hut for less than your weekly coffee budget (definitely not speaking from experience, cough cough.)

With almost 1000 huts under DOC’s jurisdiction, you can find huts in every corner of the country, from the North Island to the South, from busy national parks to quiet, remote valleys. Some huts are massive and have great facilities like on the Great Walks, others more rustic and hold in them the rich history of New Zealand tramping, hunting, and conservation.

No matter where you are or what your level of tramping experience is, it’s never too late to have your first New Zealand hut trip.

10 of the most iconic backcountry huts on the South Island

If you’re curious about visiting a New Zealand hut for the first time, now is the perfect week to do it!

February 15 -22, 2019 is Get Outdoors Week (GO Week), an annual week-long initiative that encourages people to get outside and explore New Zealand’s outdoors, safely. This week is all about rad, self-powered recreation so anything that requires your feet to get you there.

Need help on getting started? Mountain Safety Council is a great resource for planning your trip.

Here are my top tips to help make your first hut trip smooth as buttah!

Preparation is key

1. DOC has great resources, use them

The Department of Conservation (DOC) will be one of the most valuable resources you’ll find when searching for your first hut. You can begin by looking here.

They have in-depth descriptions about each hut, including maps and any important notices regarding accessibility or condition of the track. If you can’t find what you’re looking for online, pop into one of their visitor centers and talk to a ranger who will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

All of the huts are different in terms of what’s available and what they cost and how to pay. Some you book in advance, others are first come first serve. It’s important to check in advance.

2. Check the weather, again and again

As with most mountainous regions, weather in New Zealand can be extremely fickle.

It’s not uncommon to start your hike in blazing hot sun and end in all of your warm layers. You should pack for all weather conditions (we’ll get to that soon!) but you should also check the weather and assess if that rain you’ll be getting is a light shower or part of a bigger system that will make for wet and miserable conditions. And many hikes become inaccessible due to flooded rivers or dangerous terrain in poor weather.

MetService is a great resource to get accurate weather forecasts for all of New Zealand, including national parks.

3. Tell someone your plans

Once you’ve talked to DOC and checked the weather and finalized the details of your trip, tell someone.

I know, this sounds overly simple but you’d be surprised how often people leave for a hike in a hurry and forget to tell someone where they’re going and when they’ll be back. If you’re not back by when you said you would be, your trusty friend or family member can alert search and rescue.

You never know when things could go wrong, even on “easy” looking trips, so don’t forget this key part of planning.

4. And use the Plan my Trip App

The Mountain Safety Council has released a really helpful tool called Plan My Trip that is super helpful when planning your first hut adventure.

The more you prepare the less chance you have of something going wrong.

5 Things to Know before Hiking in New Zealand

5. Know your limits and be realistic with your abilities

For your first hut trip, start with something easy and not too long.

You’ll need to get used to walking with a heavy load (since all of your belongings will be on your back) so make sure you choose a hike that is suitable for your level. If it’s not as hardcore as you wanted, don’t worry.

You’ll only get stronger and fitter the more huts you do and you can always work your way up. I’ve found tramping fitness is a specific kind of being in shape that only comes from hiking a lot.

What you need to bring

6. Make a packing list

All of your belongings for the day, night and next day will be carried on your back so for starters, you’ll want a sturdy and supportive 40 – 60L backpacking backpack that has adjustable straps and a hip belt to help take the weight off your shoulders.

Hiking in New Zealand is different and the huts are basic. You bring everything in and out yourself. It’s also season dependent. You’ll pack differently for hiking in winter, and as a beginner it’s good to start tramping in the summer when there are less challenges.

Your clothing choices will be personal but here are my must-have items for an overnighter trip.

Clothes

Sports bra

2 pairs of underwear

Quick-drying synthetic t-shirt — not cotton! I use synthetic or merino wool

2 pairs of socks (1 for walking and one for relaxing in the hut)

Thermal leggings or polyprops

Long sleeve thermal shirt (either polar fleece or merino)

Outerwear

Hiking shorts or pants, depending on the season (NO DENIM EVER)

Hut shoes/slippers (honestly, my favorite piece of gear. Nothing like a cozy slipper to relax in after a long hard day!)

Hiking boots or trail running shoes, depending on the terrain

Rain jacket that is ACTUALLY waterproof

Lightweight puffy jacket that packs down small and is light (I always bring this, no matter the season!)

Beanie and gloves, you never know

Sunglasses

Gear

Sunscreen (essential here – we have no ozone layer)

Sleeping bag and inflatable pillow (huts don’t provide these for you, so be sure to bring one!)

Portable stove and gas canister (check with your hut to see if gas is provided for you – usually the busier, more popular huts like the Great Walk Huts will have a communal kitchen with gas provided in the summer season)

Camp stove/pot/jetboil

Map and compass or topographic map app

Lighter or matches in a waterproof bag

Camp utensils (knife, fork, spoon, plate, bowl, cup)

Toilet paper (most huts won’t have this so be sure to bring your own)

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Bag for rubbish (there are NEVER rubbish bins in the huts so you have to take your rubbish back out with you)

Earplugs (crucial!! You’ll be sharing your sleeping quarters and there’s ALWAYS at least one snorer)

Headtorch or headlamp

Water reservoir or big water bottle to drink from during the day

Small first aid kit: bandages, hay fever tablets, antiseptic cream, painkillers, bug repellant, etc.)

Toiletries if you feel you need them (although everyone else will be smelly too so try to just embrace it)

Candles or Luci Lights (there’s no electricity so when the sun goes down, you’ll be in the dark)

Deck of cards (some of the most fun you can have in a hut revolves around a card game with

strangers!)

Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) if you’re going somewhere hardcore and remote

Hut tickets (to give to the DOC ranger or leave in the honesty box)

Camera with a fully charged battery, because it’s going to be epic and you’ll definitely want photos.

7. Figure out your food

Dialing in your camp food is a bit of an art and with a little practice, you’ll quickly know what works for you. You’ll want to strike that fine balance between carrying too much weight that you won’t eat and not enough so that you go hungry — and trust me, there’s nothing scarier than a hangry hiker.

Here’s my general meal plan for an overnight hike:

Breakfast

Porridge with nuts and dried fruit

Coffee. ALWAYS coffee.

Lunch

Crackers

Stick of salami and cheese and/or tin of tuna

Small packet of olives

Small tub of hummus

Usually I bring dehydrated meals from Back Country Cuisine, though sometimes on the first night of a big trip I’ll bring fresh food (there are only so many days in a row you can eat freeze dried food before going crazy)

Other times I’ll do pasta or couscous with some veggies

If you’re just going for an overnight hike and you really want to be prepared and gourmet, you could prepare a meal a few days before and freeze the leftovers. By the time you reach the hut, the food will be mostly defrosted and ready for a re-heat in your camp stove

Beef Jerky

Tea (hey we are a Commonwealth country)

9. So you’re all ready to go. Now what?

Get out there! Make sure you’ve given yourself enough daylight to complete the hike. Once you’ve reached the hut, put your hut tickets in the honesty box or give them to the hut warden. If you’re not sure how to pay for a hut, you can check out this helpful site that will walk you through it.

Kick off your boots, make yourself a cuppa, and enjoy everything there is to enjoy about hut life. You’ll meet some unique characters in New Zealand huts so don’t be shy!

Be sure to sign the intentions book with all of your information (when you arrived, how long you’re staying, where you’re going).

10. Don’t forget!

New Zealand huts are a luxury, not a right.

Treat these amazing huts with the respect and dignity they deserve. Help keep the hut clean by looking after your space and leaving the hut cleaner than you found it; use the broom and sweep up and stack the benches in the morning.

Keep your dirty boots out of the main rooms and give the common areas a sweep before you go. Most importantly, take all of your rubbish with you. There are no rubbish bins so everything you bring in must go back out with you the next day.

Staying in a hut in the New Zealand backcountry is an incredible experience we should all get to enjoy!
