Boy soprano problems: I received an offer to play Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors in my city’s opera this December, but it conflicts with my Lessons and Carols gig where I’m singing the Stanford Magnificat in G solo.

I miss long form cohesive choral works so much please give me back my college choir

#thymewilltell #I wasn’t even in the choir associated with the college it was the community choir in a college town #but gods we sang good music #and don’t get me wrong the songs my choir here does are good #but they’re individual few minute often pop or broadway or folk songs #I like them. I do. I just really want to sing a proper choral work again #I want a requiem or the messiah or a 70 minute dissertation on the state of the earth written for a full orchestra and 10 voice parts

my Family has some fondness for Sweeney Todd (bc the music is Good) and it has like. it has Hurt Me for years that I can't sing My Friends in the right octave

But!!! now armed with the knowledge that the very natural inclination to drop your larynx can actually strangle your range and practicing harsh vocals and lower songs and doing breathing exercises

I can scrape it. and i'm pretty sure I can fill out a good number of the notes to something much fuller given how much more comfortable my lower range is in a way i didn't know was possible

AND i noticed there was a new cast recording w josh groban and i was like "??? he's a tenor why would he play Famous Low Baritone Part, Sweeney Todd" and took a listen

they had to bump it up higher for him B))))

#Off to sing Handel's Messiah! #Messiah was the first major choral work I ever sang #In community chorus #Come to think we sang the Hallelujah chorus in school choir #But it took us a lot of effort to learn it lol #Anyway I'm always excited to sing it #And today I'm doubly excited because our also soloist from last year is performing again #And I have never heard anyone else sing those pieces with a clarity and beauty of tone like hers! #It was one of those times when you just fail in life with a voice #And I don't often wish for other people's talents but I would do anything to sing like her #Anyway I'm off to have fun! XD

i would've done the fach system so much better actually (<- has never seriously studied classical/operatic voice)

#introducing a vocal type in between mezzo and contralto #<- my only evidence is that the contralto break is at D and the soprano break is at F and then mezzos have breaks at E or Eb. that's 4 #and my brain is used to the 8 prt choral satb system and the alto 2s (most of whom are mezzos and not contraltos) are Not the same as sop 2 #(and like 'light lyric mezzo' vs 'dramatic mezzo' no shut the fuck up. there should just be another classification) #also the lower voice types get 3 low ones and then an androgynous one and if a contralto is already characterized by an androgynous tone #then there should be 3 other ones too for symmetry #i am just mostly making shit up though #the fach system seems to work well for opera! and i don't understand it enough to seriously critique it. but most people don't sing opera #but since ppl (esp western ppl) always want to know their category even when it doesn't matter or is actively unhelpful #*i* think we should come up with a better contemporary system #sorry for the essay in these tags poor nia has had enough in her dms #kade speaks

there has got to be SOMEONE in this town who wants to sing early music with me and isn’t completely out of my league

#i want to join a choir that does mostly early music but there isn’t one in my city #and i don’t really have the training or the contacts to start one #the problem is I have a lot more formal musical training than the average person but a lot less than the average working classical musician #i have some very tenuous connections in the local scene but i’m garbage at networking and have not been keeping my hand in #didn’t help that all the choirs stopped rehearsing for a few years!!! but I also have not made any effort to get back into it #i just don’t want to sing contemporary choral music all the time…I want more than crumbs #sighs. every time I go to see a concert I get all nostalgic for the times I was performing #it’s so easy to regret not studying music more seriously in college but my initial attempts didn’t pan out #and I didn’t have my shit together enough to pursue it once I had started down a different path #sometimes I think maybe if I had wanted it more I would have tried harder? idk. i know I have the benefit of hindsight now #going back to school for something that impractical is not really an option at this point even if I wanted to go back to school #real life adventures

I love making playlists so much. I love sorting music into feelings and then being able to hypertune in to a specific emotion just by listening. I don't feel feelings the same way without music, it's like turning up the saturation on life.

ok ok so i’m not a super knowledge music/composer/soundtrack person but your narnia ask reminded me of the other soundtrack i was horrifyingly obsessed with, circa middle school: peter pan (2003) by james newton howard. and i just looked him up and it looks like he has done work on movies MUCH more prolific than my silly little peter pan movie. anyway, i’m bored at work so i thought i’d ask if you have any james newton howard rambles/opinions.

(i do not have any particular attachment to jnh himself so i won’t be offended if you have no opinions or if you have opinions and they’re negative. this is pure curiosity.)

YEAH !!! he's done quite a few of my favorite scores ever, including the hunger games series and the dark knight trilogy* and overall his work is very. orchestral. like. obviously everyone's work is orchestral, but jnh specifically sounds like something I'd hear at a concert hall <33 I can't explain it but it's true <333

*he's credited alongside hans zimmer (another one of my all-time faves) and idk how the work was split between the two but regardless it's some of my favorite music (even if the trilogy itself isn't very comics-accurate 😔😔😔😔😔)

overall I think my favorite thing about jnh is how soothing his music is ??? especially his work with the hunger games soundtracks because obviously there's the more intense action music for fight scenes but a lot of the soundtrack is very calm and contemplative. and I really really love it <33 in that same vein, one of my all time favorite tracks in the hunger games trilogy is monkey mutts. most of the song is very intense and unsettling, but my favorite part is 2:37 to the end. it's sooooo <3333333 I'm not gonna lie, I really wish that part of the soundtrack was separate from the rest of that piece because I'm not an overly huge fan of jnh's more intense, faster-paced music. it's not BAD, but there's just some composers who I think do action music a little better. but like I said I looooove the calmer pieces howard does <3 he uses string instruments so well!!!! my TOTAL favorite piece, hands down, is rue's farewell. it's such an interesting one because it's a death scene, but it doesn't really seem sad until the very end. it's so...peaceful. it's like walking down a beach at sunset and listening to the waves. and that's really interesting to me because the character who's dying grew up in this totally shitty world and she's suffered so much and now she's just. at peace. and the music reflects it and BOY I go insane <3!!

the dark knight trilogy is also really fun!!! it's a different flavor of music for sure; the hunger games is very calm and gentle but tdk has a lot more intensity in the music. and I actually quite enjoy it despite what I just said about how I feel about jnh doing faster/more intense music, but hans zimmer being a collaborator on the soundtrack may or may not have something to do with that. idk how they split up the work, but I really love the end result regardless!! I'm not a hero is one of my favorites!! it's very,,, varied. it has a lot of different sections and moving parts but I LOOOOVE it <3 personal issues with the trilogy aside, it really captures the whole batman vibe! there's also a lot of jnh's more calmer and reflective style throughout the soundtrack, and it's a good mix with zimmer's style imo!!

he also did treasure planet!!!!!!!!!!! it's like. my favorite disney movie <333 my favorite tracks include 12 years later (it has a lot of jnh's calm/contemplative style!! and also jim's theme with a really neat underlying electric guitar <33 makes a man like me so crazy) and silver leaves (which, you guessed it, also has a very calm atmosphere to it)

all in all I think jnh's best work comes from the calmer more atmospheric music!! I think my favorite of his works is the hunger games series, but honestly I'm not super picky either way <333

also here's my soundtrack playlist!! it started out as a little study playlist for finals week but at this point it's become where I keep all my favorite movie soundtracks lmao!! I add to it almost daily so right now it's at 15 hours but by the end of the week? who knows <33 but idk none of the compilations I've ever found have actually had All Of My Faves so like. fuck it I'll do it myself <3 I could probably ramble all day long about every individual composer on that playlist but <33 for the sake of brevity I will not <333
