With a good chunk of comparisons out of the way, I'd like to dive even deeper.
Navigation:
Dissected Creature
Experiment Z-57
Corpius
Comparisons, Part 1: Let's Talk About Legs
Comparisons, Part 2
2023 update: extras
The point of this post is to examine the similarities and differences between a few anatomical elements from the beasts we've covered so far. I'm presenting observations on things that people may or may not bother to compare otherwise, because I'm a nerd who enjoys examining every last detail on 3D models. Maybe somebody will find my brain spew interesting, or perhaps the information would be useful in some sort of fanwork.
I wanted to start off by looking at the Chozo Archives gallery rewards. Particularly, the 100% completion reward for Dairon. In this image, we see Quiet Robe standing before a smattering of screens in front of a tube. The tube is filled with a pink substance, and Experiment Z-57 is wriggling about as it floats within. The creature appears to be a juvenile in this image, with a long, wriggly body and lanky limbs. Its carapace appears underdeveloped and not nearly as noticeable as it is on the adult that we see in-game.
Tumblr media
I wanted to use this post to compare the baby to Corpius and the experiment as we see it in-game (there's new information unrelated to the baby as well, but for this first part, we'll focus on the baby).
Something interesting to note is that at first glance, Experiment Z-57's X form more closely resembles the juvenile in the tank than the corpse we see in Dairon. The infant has a long, wriggly tail and its abdomen doesn't appear to be obscured and encumbered by its carapace. It has a snake-like body with two sets of legs attached.
Tumblr media
Also of note is the fact that boss-57 has bony spines sticking out of its back just like the infant.
Tumblr media
If you look very closely at its thick lower body (above the length of the tail), the infant Z-57 in the gallery image has a carapace, but the edges of the shell's segments are shaped more like the pointed plates on Corpius' tail than the plates on corpse-57's rounded shell. The infant's tail also ends in two points, a bit more reminiscent of Corpius' clubbed scorpion barb than than the corpse's single-pointed stinger.
The baby also has stripes, which may be either body markings or representative of the segments of its growing carapace, which could possibly have been very soft at that life stage. The spikes on the baby's elbows are also consistent with boss Z-57's anatomy, as are the scutes on its wrists.
Also curious is the fact that the juvenile appears to lack the stilted pair of legs present on both other iterations of Experiment Z-57 and Corpius, but they could just be hidden from our view in the gallery image. Maybe the pup's third pair of legs is tucked beneath its chest? Below is an image of Experiment Z-57 with the wiggly pair of noodle arms hidden.
Tumblr media
In any case, Experiment Z-57's X-form more closely resembles the infant in the gallery image in terms of body shape. They've both got that spaghetti noodle body type, like a worm with legs.
Something else I'd like to mention is the 100% completion reward for Ghavoran. The image shows a group of Chozo warriors surrounding the corpse of a beast that appears to be the same species as Corpius. A shirtless warrior stands triumphant atop the kill wearing a Chozo power suit from the waist down (leg greaves and talon caps; note how the unarmored talons are black and curved, but the armored talons of the feet and the fully armored soldiers are thicker and white with a curved pyramid shape).
Tumblr media
This could be a hunting expedition, or the shirtless individual could be undergoing a trial of some kind. We could say a lot about this image, but I'd like to focus on the dead animal.
The hunted specimen in this image bears an obvious resemblance to Corpius. The setting leads me to believe this is another wild specimen of the same species. It has stilt legs with dewclaws, the bright blue line running from the middle of its jaw to its torso is consistent with the line on Corpius' side, the amount of teeth and their arrangement is consistent, so is the shape of the tail and the flesh at the base of the tail. Additionally, the creature appears to have a set of exposed ribs beneath its torso, hidden as they are behind its limp foreleg and the soldier in the foreground.
There are a few differences between Corpius and this specimen, but nothing too significant. For example, the beast above appears to have bioluminescent blue spots and stripes in some places on its body. If the Chozo hunted these in Ghavoran, a location that has largely been left untouched by civilization, it's probably safe to assume the beast in the gallery painting is at least unmodified.
Corpius has a teal stripe going down its body from the corner of its jaw in the same place the gallery beast's luminescent stripe trails out from. However, Corpius' stripe is less visible because the color difference between its body and the stripe isn't quite as drastic as the difference in hue on the concept art.
Now that we've introduced the tertiary gallery elements, I'd like to compare them to the models we've covered. Corpius and the specimen in the Ghavoran gallery image both have those two-toed stilts. The juvenile in Dairon's gallery image appears to be lacking them, but the Dissected Creature's second (middle) pair of legs consists of one-toed stilts.
One trait Experiment Z-57's X-Form shares with the Ghavoran gallery beast is scuted legs. The Ghavoran beast's legs differ from Corpius' in that there are overlapping scales covering the length of the leg leading up to its claws. Experiment Z-57's boss form shares this quality.
Tumblr media
I find the resemblance between Z-57's X-form and the juvenile in the Archives fascinating. The immense physical differences between the experiment's corpse and the X parasite that eats it makes a show of the fact that the X don't just copy their prey's appearance, they absorb its DNA. In Cataris, Experiment Z-57 is displaying the physical traits of its host at an earlier life stage.
This brings up a few more questions: does the X parasite actively choose which traits to express based on preference, or is it a matter of what is more functionally advantageous?
Regardless, I'd like to call something else to your attention. It's been a good, long month since my last Z-57 post, and I've finally found the asset I've been looking for to complete my comparisons.
Tumblr media
Meet this bug, who is part of an object called "chozobaseasset04".
This bug has purple eyes, quite the opposite of our Corpius and Corpius-adjacent beasts' ocular organs. But there are several traits here that I want to really focus on. Specifically, the rest of the bug.
Tumblr media
I posit that this bug's DNA was spliced with a member of Corpius' species (and perhaps another animal) to create Experiment Z-57.
Everything is there: the shell, the color of the shell, the stinger, everything. The singular pair of stilt legs on the dissected corpse is nigh-identical to the bug's, but adapted with the Corpius monster's traits. The stealth hunter's genes are expressed in the stilt legs with the singular knee horn and the lack of a complete exoskeletal covering.
I can't pretend to understand how genetic mix 'n match operations work, but it makes sense to me from an aesthetic and contextual standpoint. The Dissected Creature's second pair of legs resembles bug legs because they are bug legs. This abomination to the laws of nature is a mish-mash of genetic traits that shouldn't exist in conjunction with each other.
I don't have anything smart to say about the Experiment's construction, I just want to put forth the similarities between Bug On Table and the Dissected Creature.
Tumblr media
Here's the concept art for Table With Bug to drive home the idea it had some involvement in genetic experiments.
I've been looking for Table With Bug for ages under the assumption that at least one of its contents was going to make it into the name, and now that I've found it under a generic name, I'm foaming at the mouth. Everything in this post before the bug shows up was written on May 7th, 2022, and then I got sick for a week.
I can't remember half the things I was gonna say about eyes and teeth a month ago. Frankly, I'm just glad I could bring Table With Bug to the discussion.
Tumblr media
This is the face of science.

Metroid Series Suit Aesthetic Compass
Trawling through my archive and found this post along with a comment from @nachozmusic so I had to go do it. Please enjoy an aesthetic compass of Samus's suits from "Guy-Creature", and "Chunky-Smooth"
Tumblr media
Feel free to make your own version of this, I've hosted the .clip file here on GoogleDrive.
Some observations/comments under the cut
-Zero Suit included for sake of completeness, and judged on aesthetic only. I believe Samus herself is very creaturey, but it's more of a personality thing so it doesn't count. Given the resemblance of the Zero Suit to Chozo body markings, I could be persuaded it is more creaturey.
-As it turns out most designs fall into the "Chunky Guy" quadrant, to nobody's surprise.
-Re: the Fusion suits; I think the colour palette influences the creatureyness, so I have sorted them accordingly.
-Re: the Dread suits; as above, the colour palette influences the creatureyness, but also the changes in the shoulders influence the chunkiness.
-Re: the Prime suits; as above with the colour palettes, I think the the Gravity suit is slightly more "Guy" than the Varia, and the Phazon suit more "Creature", but both not by much. I tried not to overlap them too much so the chart was more readable.
-I consider the "retro"/2D versions of the Power and Gravity suits distinct variations, mainly because of difference in art style makes them more distinct than any 2D Varia.
-The Light Suit reads both very Creature and very Guy depending on what parts you're looking at (very sleek and minimal, but resembles a Luminoth), so it sits in the middle.
-The Dark Suit got pushed around a lot as I worked on that quadrant; each time I added a design I had to readjust where it was relative to the others. I think where it sits now is about right.
-SR Varia is the Chunkiest Guy, hands down. Metroid suit is an exceptionally Chunky Creature.

I've seen people say that it doesn't make sense for Artaria to be the "ice level" of Dread when it's placed in the bowels of planet ZDR, with Cataris serving as the lava world even though it's higher up in the mantle. I've seen all kinds of crazy theories that tried to explain this anomaly...
...while the game actually does explain it to you if you pay attention
"Adam" tells you that magma is pumped from the planet's interior and routed from there to Cataris, meaning that Cataris is not simply an area with naturally occurring lava (it might be as well) it's simply the area where all the machinery to pump the magma is located.
What do we see in the east-most side of Artaria? A huge magma lake with magma being sucked away by a huge machine in the ceiling, with said machine being part of Cataris' geothermal power plant.
The presence of such a huge magma area in an otherwise chilly area so deep underground means that Artaria was indeed originally full of magma due to being the closest to the planet's core, but most of its magma has been sucked away by Cataris' machinery, thus cooling down the area and allowing the Mawkin to build their own structures there and terraform it and even allow creatures from other parts of the planet to populate it (some of the background creatures are also found in Ghavoran, like those weird, purplish deer-like creatures that run away when they see you, including Corpius according to one of the Chozo Archives, which perhaps implies that the Mawkin terraformed Artaria creating a new ecosystem there by importing fauna from Ghavoran to there)
So no, ZDR really isn't such a nonsensical planet from a geological standpoint, it's just been artificially tampered with

Maytroid… sort of… part 5!
Now, we come to the end of my little Maytroid series. If you want to understand what’s going on with these, I’d recommend glancing at the previous posts in this little series in order to understand what’s going on with this. In hindsight, I sort of wish I had put a little more time and effort into these, but I suppose it cannot be helped now. I do still enjoy the world building these have allowed me to do, and in many case have laid out the groundwork for some very interesting storytelling going forward, from the cult like worship of Phaaze, to the mysteries of SR-388. I hope to flesh these things out in future stories, but something I’ve learned from some prior experiences is to hold myself to a standard of passion over consistency. I can’t give any promises on when any of these story arcs will be properly written and posted. For now, though, onto the finale of his little series.
Day 27: Golden Torizo
Zebes Rebuilt Archive Scan
“The process to control the Torizo guardians has been a long and arduous process, with much trial and error. The Torizo are sentient, containing the souls of long deceased warriors of the Chozo. Many of my archives on Chozo spiritual studies have been lost due to the destruction of the initial archive made by my creators, so I am unable to ascertain the exact process of imbuing the soul into one of these guardian statues. Current efforts to convert the Torizo to our side have centered around continuous logic routines and straining the mental faculties of the guardians. Their on control over themselves is absolute, and they will never make a move to harm a member of the Thoha Hasana. This has had no hope of change. However, this should not pose an issue.
Ridley has personally taken one of the Torizo to convert by way of immense emotional trauma. He has regularly destroyed artifacts of great spiritual significance to the Chozo in front of the Torizo. Once a week, he has commissioned for me to create a biologically perfect Chozo egg, which he proceeds to consume in front of the Torizo. The fact that the egg is infertile has not been acknowledged. Other acts to emotionally torment the Torizo include footage of violence against animals and civilians during his raids on Galactic Federation Space and during recreational hunts, and playing footage of the massacre of the Chozo during his attack on Zebes. Such methods have shown only minor success in breaking the Torizo’s will. However, I believe he simply seeking personal pleasure from the guardian’s suffering.”
Day 28: Metroid Prime
Promise to the Entrusted One
“We have failed. While the great poison has been sealed away at its source, our population is all but dead. Only seven of us remain. We cannot hope to finish this, nor rebuild the society we once knew. Our creations are insufficient to end this. We are scientists, not the great warriors who fell to protect our world. Still, we toil, in hopes that you, the entrusted one that greatest of us foresaw, can succeed where we have not. We gift to you the armor perfected for your use, utilizing the one organism the Phazon does not infect. Go forth, hatchling of the Chozo, and save this world. You cannot save us, but this world of beautiful creatures can live on. From the trees to the fish to the very fungus that protects you in this armor, you can save this vast, wonderful world. Go forth, and free this world.”
Day 29: EMMI
Report from GFS Sunset Homage
“EMMI unit S-11 has infiltrated SR-166. Preliminary readings show minimum atmospheric Phazon contamination in general planetary range. However, creatures around the crash site have already undergone Phazon induced transfiguration. Several carcasses within a 45 mile radius of the crash sight have been found with no signs of predation and have shown definitive signs of Phazon Induced Cell Death (PICD). While exacerbating preexisting ailments has not been ruled out, current evidence points to death due solely to PICD. One herbivorous creature seen displaying erratic behavior was euthanized by S-11, and was found to have PICD in several areas of the brain.
It is this researcher’s opinion that the entire north western continent of SR-166 be put under strict quarantine. We have seen in other cases how the Phazon infestation of a planet can begin slowly but escalate exponentially. We cannot risk the Phazon crisis reach the Galactic Federation’s proverbial flank.”
Day 30: Mother Brain
Secret Agreement
“Your purpose will not be to enforce order. You will not bend the Galactic Federation to my will or push politics from the shadows. You are not an agent of peace. You are my monster. You will have your fill of blood and sadism. You will be my agent of evil to sic on those who fall astray from cooperation. You will be nothing more or less than yourself, but only where I choose. This war will last forever, and you will be the wolf for the sheep to fear. You will be the enemy.”
Day 31: Mission Completed
Mission Report
“Mission was successful. Metroid presence on SR-388 has been eradicated. Signal coming from the cavern was created by highly mutated Metroid, which was put down as well. However, I have saved and catalogued data on all Metroid permutations encountered for future reference. Glaxamore presence on the planet was low, but I did face a brief encounter with Ridley. He was beaten, but due to the arrival of the planetary super storm, I cannot confirm the kill. Additionally, I have disobeyed orders slightly. I discovered a Metroid hatchling during its hatching process. It has since imprinted on me, and has shown no signs of aggression. I have taken in the Metroid for study by the Galactic Federation. I already have drafted paperwork to ensure that it will not be tampered with for purposes of bioweapons research, and hope that the energy they metabolize can be used for something positive. Against my better judgement, I have given the hatchling a name. It’s the name of a pet I used to have before the Chozo took me in, Pyonchi… Computer, strike the last two sentences from the record.”

Ok so my Metroid insert has a lot of baggage lmao. Just projecting all my negativity onto her big time but tbh I’ve always wanted to explore psychological horror/thriller type inserts so here we go.
She is basically head of research and development for the federation. She works with lead scientist Steven Wheatfield (my beloved OC that shows up in almost everything I make along with my insert).
I’m not 100% on the timeline yet but I’m thinking sometime prior to Prime or before Zero the division gets targeted by space pirates, 1) cause they are archiving a lot of federation information and 2) they needed federation soldiers/scientists/personnel for study due to their knowledge of federation confidential information.
Thinking since in Prime lore they are constantly trying to mimic Samus’ arsenal and suit they want human test subjects to see if they can create a likeness in DNA, but also bridge the humans DNA into their own so it makes the reverse engineering easier.
They don’t have Chozo stuff so obviously this is going to be a failure, but they don’t know that. My insert and a bunch of personnel get kidnapped by Ridley and the pirates. After they start getting studied and tested on a lot of the personnel start dying off, including Steven, leaving my insert like the focus test subject.

And why not, also been working on more of dem characters from that writing I’m trying to do - which is why I pull myself away from the new other game I got sketches, so I might as well share More ladies~ Muscles are still Hard As Heck. I do not understand them. Chozo archive pictures are certainly something, but I am no expert xD And went and tossed some armor there too, because I do try and make some armor pics of them too. Armor is cool! Come on! Can be troubling though, with that much detail. This is the 3rd one I started sketching and actually ended up happy with. You gotta work for it! Also having fun with stuff like ‘Prosthetic arm? Yeah let’s go, prosthetic arm it is’ and so we do what we want~

I thought the same joke about that scene lel.
It's neat to see chozo archive like we see poor kraid be captured, the chozo prisoners be fed the burenia boss, there a X-postor among us (yes I made the joke, hate me all you want lol.)
It's probably just me but I noticed Raven Beak has a few thing in common with Infinite, maybe they share similar archetype.
Simple Power hungry leaders who doesn't give a shit about his members, boasting they're ass being the hottest shit, wear primarily metallic grey & black & red, has elements of deception (Infinite's illusion, Raven Beak pretending to be ADAM which is a cool twist btw)
Poor Kraid. His big return after a 17 year hiatus, and nobody treats him with respect, even Samus is like "oh, it's just you" :( ngl i felt bad when i saw that ulcer on his stomach
Oh no. Oh no I can hear Infinite's theme perfectly for Raven Beak. What have you done.
Oh and you've forgot that both of them got blinded in their right eye, Infinite by Shadow and RB by Metroid Samus! What does this all mean???

The level of detail in Metroid Dread is astounding. Take for example, the Armadigger. If you don't know any of the monsters by name, it's the little four-legged guy on the platform by the blue tank in the center of this image:
Tumblr media
Its name was revealed in an official capacity in this article (ARCHIVED LINK: post updated July 13, 2023. The Metroid Dread official website appears to have been taken offline), but that's not why I've brought you here. I've come to make another model reference post. Select the individual images to get a closer look at them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The humble armadigger is a quadrupedal four-eyed creature with brown fur.
Of the Armadigger, the official Metroid Dread website has this to say:
Armadigger A violent, four-footed creature native to ZDR. Charges at Samus with great speed when she’s detected and will quickly change its direction and try again if she evades the attack. Fight back with a Melee Counter or attack it from outside its charging path.
Source: Metroid Dread Report vol. 8: Surveying planet ZDR
Tumblr media
It appears to possess a shell of some sort in the darker slabs on its back, but those could be large tufts of fur. Perhaps it's a thicker, furry, armored hide? Each leg has three toes, all of which have claws. It has a stubby tail and curved black horns on either side of its face. A bit is clamped between its teeth, holding some sort of muzzle or a bit of equipment in place, and it wears a metal collar.
Tumblr media
Something to note is that these creatures are depicted alongside Chozo warriors on a mural in Elun's orrery. It seems to me that the Mawkin used armadiggers as war hounds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may have noticed a few details in the last image. Namely, the armadigger's nipples. They're mammals! They also have cute little paw pads on the bottom of their feet.
You may have also noticed another detail. If you've ever owned a dog, and he's asked for belly rubs, you'll be familiar with the concept. Yes, this is from unmodded, vanilla Dread. No, it has no animations assigned to it. It doesn't even have any bones. Will you see it during normal gameplay? No, you'll never even notice it.
That's what dedication to the lore looks like. Nipplé y bolas.

Finished Metroid Dread!
I struggled with the difficulty throughout the game, but if theres any game that teaches you not to give up, keep at it, and practice well its this one. I feel so damn satisfied that Metroid Dread is finally here and is a reality. Even 100 percented the items today after beating the final boss yesterday.
Overall I had a very fun time and I hope Samus and the Metroid Series will enter another golden era rush of games again. Nintendo's leading lady deserves it.
Oh if you're wondering why I changed my profile pic, I unlocked all the Chozo Archive Art, one of them had this shirtless Chozo, and well I found him hot lol He isnt in the actual game tho lol
