Dress: Co Gathered Balloon Sleeve Dress | Boots: Dorothy Perkins Black 'Amaddox' Ankle Boots (£40.00) | Clutch: Olympia Le-Tan The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Clutch Bag ($1,308.79) | Tights: 靴下屋 60デニール プレミアムタイツ (¥990) | Hat: The Witchmaster’s Hats The Modern Day Witch Hat (US$19.99)
Today’s theme for “Color Me Valentine” is Broadway Babe! So, I made an outfit inspired by Elphaba, considering I already made an outfit based on Galinda for another challenge.
I actually love both characters and I think they compliment each other well. I also love their songs in the musical, especially the last one “For Good”, but this set was inspired by the showstopper that is “Defying Gravity.” The emotion in that song... I get goosebumps every time.

🐶💗 Love Yourself 💗🐶 Love yourself like Dug loves you! And he just met you too! I adore dogs! And there’s something about Dug that just puts a smile on your face. This completes the 2021 color me valentine challenge!!! I found that I could do 12 posts in a row! The thing I love about this challenge is that it was pretty short. I still can’t believe that all the art I made for this challenge were loop animations!!! Can I be called an animator now? It’s always been a dream of mine. #ColorMeValentine @colormemagic https://www.instagram.com/p/CL5SUkUDE6Z/?igshid=170eyiaq2qgrb

Dress: Mach & Mach Pink Organza Puffed Dress ($1,560) | Shoes: Jimmy Choo SSENSE Exclusive Pink & Gold Coarse Glitter Romy 85 Heels (850 CAD) | Clutch: Judith Leiber Snail Seashell Clutch ($625.00) | Earrings: Mikimoto ピアス (¥ 112,200) | Ring: Disney Japan アリエル&フランダー 指輪・リング セット (¥ 2,090) | Hair comb: Lelet NY Starlet Pearl and Crystal Comb ($378)
Day 1 of the Instagram challenge “Color Me Valentine” organized by colormemagic. The theme: “Make It Pink”.
I decided to create an outfit inspired by Ariel’s pink dress outfit, mostly because the big pouffy sleeves of the Mach & Mach dress reminded me so much of the sleeves on Ariel’s dress. The fork/dinglehopper ring was chosen for pretty obvious reasons. The Judith Leiber clutch was a lucky find and it reminded me so much of the seashell in which Ursula trapped Ariel’s voice that I had to use it. Good thing it doesn’t clash with the rest.
The title of the set? It’s from the lyrics of “Beyond My Wildest Dreams” from the Broadway musical “The Little Mermaid”.

Dress: Jenny Packham Strapless sequin embellished gown ($5,284) | Cape: Cucculelli Shaheen Constellation Tulle Cape (£4,250) | Shoes: Aldo Glassslipper ($110) | Clutch: Judith Leiber Disney's Frozen 2 Frozen Seamless Crystal Clutch (CAD 5,384.82) | Earrings: Birks ROUND DIAMOND STUD EARRINGS $2,200.00 | Headband: Jennifer Behr Hila Headband ($298.00)
Today’s “Color Me Valentine” theme is Royalty, so I decided to create an outfit inspired by Arendelle’s (former) queen, Elsa!
I think you can pretty much see how Elsa inspired this outfit, but there is some extra “Royalty” to this outfit... The designer of the dress, Jenny Packham, is a designer that has been often worn by the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton), an actual royal! The Judith Leiber clutch is from a collection she did for Frozen 2, and I thought it matched the outfit’s aesthetic perfectly.

Today’s theme for “Color Me Valentine” is “Sweets & Treats”! As you can probably tell, the inspiration is Mickey’s Ice Cream Bar.
Every time I go to Walt Disney World, I need to have an ice cream bar. My trip isn’t complete without one. So, I took inspiration from the wrapping paper of the ice cream bar for the outfit, and was glad to find a necklace and some ears representing that delicious frozen treat.

Dress: Valentino Cape effect midi dress ($4,490) | Shoes: Manolo Blahnik HANGISI GALASSIA 90 Gold Textile Jewel Buckle Pumps (£815) | Clutch: Judith Leiber Heart Rainbow Clutch Bag ($3,195) | Fake Collar: COS CIRCLE CUT SHIRT BIB (450,00 SEK) | Earrings: Yam Vanessa Drop ($260.00) | Hat: Lock & Co. Hats CLASSIC BOATER (£135.00)
Today’s theme for “Color Me Valentine” is “Make It Red”! I will admit that, at first, I didn’t know what kind of outfit to do. I had already done outfits for characters that I associate with the color red not that long ago. As I was thinking that, I turned to my nightstand and looked at the cover of André Leon Talley’s recent memoir, “The Chiffon Trenches.” I remember saying to myself, “Well, he’s lucky, he’s already in red.” And then it hit me! Why not do an outfit inspired by what Mr Talley is wearing on the cover of his book?
Now, before I explain the outfit, I just want to say that if you love fashion and want to know what it was like for a black man in that industry back in the days, I highly recommend this book. Andre Leon Talley has a way with words that makes you feel like you are standing right there with him as he tells you about various events in his life, just like when he told us about the VIP events he attended back when he wrote “Life with André” for Vogue, which quickly became my favourite part about Vogue when I read it. He made us outsiders feel like we were part of the in crowd.
Anyway, on to the outfit. So, on the cover, he wears a red cape over a crisp white shirt with a straw boater hat. Since I couldn’t find a red cape, I opted instead for a dress with a cape effect, and use a fake collar underneath, to give the illusion of a shirt being worn underneath. The boater hat I found looks a lot like the one he wears on the cover. I went for Manolo Blahnik shoes as the shoe designer is a dear friend of Mr Talley, and I opted for the ones with the buckles because I’ve seen him wear that red cape with Roger Vivier shoes, who is known for his buckle shoes. The heart clutch is because love and its importance in his life is a recurring theme throughout the book. Finally, the earrings. He doesn’t wear any on the cover, but I felt a piece of jewelry would perfectly complete the outfit, and because Mr Talley values the growing number of black creatives in the fashion industry, I decided to choose earrings designed by an African-American designer.
The title? It’s the last sentence in his book and it’s so perfect, I just had to use it.

Today’s theme for “Color Me Valentine” is Super Kawaii! So I decided to create a Tokyo Disney worthy look using ONLY Japanese brands.
As you can tell, my inspiration is Alice in Wonderland (which is also the title of the set in Japanese). The brand Secret Honey does a lot of Disney-inspired clothes. Some are full-on costumes, others are more casual clothes that are perfect to visit Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea. I would say this Alice dress is something in between, but it’s just so cute (or kawaii), that I couldn’t resist. The bunny-themed shoes are a perfect fit for the outfit, as is the hair bow. I went with a white handbag with hearts to represent the white roses Alice tries to paint red in the Queen of Heart’s garden. I also adore that brand of handbags, and got so many compliment for a blue handbag I bought from that brand. The necklace represents Dinah, so I HAD to include it!
Fun fact about Japan is that you can find a lot of Disney products outside the parks and the Disney Stores. You have no idea the amount of Disney stuff I bought when I was there, not to mention how cute all the merch is over there.

Dress: Hervé Leger CHANTELLE CUTOUT BANDAGE DRESS GREEN OPAL ($556.00) | Shoes: Aldo Giulia ($95) | Clutch: Judith Leiber HEART CLUTCH RED ($2,995.00) | Bracelet: Mikimoto Bracelet (¥ 61,600) | Hair clip: Lelet NY Matisse Barrette ($78)
Last day of “Color Me Valentine” and the theme is “Love Yourself”. While the princess I associate to the most is Belle, I already did outfits inspired by her yellow dress, as well as one inspired by her blue dress. So I decided to create an outfit based on a princess I also strongly feel connected to: Ariel.
I started this challenge with an Ariel look, and I am ending it with another one. I’ve always felt Ariel got a bad rep for going to the human world because of a guy she saw once. What people seem to forget is that she had an interest in the human world BEFORE she “met” (more like saw) Eric. “Part of Your World” was before the ship passes above her grotto full of human stuff. As for her infatuation with Eric, it was originally like any crush a 16-year-old would have towards an unattainable crush. What leads to her making a deal with Ursula, which was not the idea of the century, but she is a teenager, is how her father destroys all her collection, something she holds dear. Can you really blame the girl for doing something stupid after her father blew a fuse.
Anyway, so the dress reminded me of the color of Ariel’s tail, not to mention the shape has a bit of a mermaid feel. The shoes are about the same colour as Ariel’s seashell bra. Turns out purple shoes are not that easy to find. The red heart clutch are for Ariel’s hair and also for the theme of loving thyself. The hair clip reminded me of seaweed, which fits the mermaid vibe, while the pearl bracelet is mostly because pearls are found in the sea.

Today’s theme for “Color Me Valentine” is “Cutest Couple”! I decided to represent Donald and Daisy.
To be honest, representing two distinct characters in one outfit is complicated. So I decided to make a feminine version of Donald’s outfit, sorta like a Daisy version.
The top is darker than Donald’s sailor top, but that’s mostly because sailor-inspired tops are rare, so I had to go the Japanese uniform way. Same for the ribbon around the neck. While neither ducks wear pants or skirts, I decided to include a white shirt to represent their white bottoms. The gold flats are for Donald’s and Daisy’s yellow duck feet, and the backpack has Daisy’s bow on it. The turquoise bracelet is because of the bracelet Daisy wears. The bow just perfectly rounds off the outfit.

Bodysuit: Area Woven Crystal-Trim Cut-Out Bodysuit (AED2,175) | Pants: CC&DD 2017冬装新品专柜正品时尚修身显瘦PU小脚长裤女黑色打底裤 (¥104.00) | Boots: Dorothy Perkins White 'Annika' Chelsea Boots (£26.25) | Handbag: Michael Kors Whitney Large Star Embellished Logo and Leather Convertible Shoulder Bag (CA$448) | Earrings: Birks SINGLE SILVER STAR STUD EARRING (CA$95.00)
Today’s theme for “Color Me Valentine” is “You’re Super”! My knowledge of superheroes being limited, I googled “Canadian superheroes” and found Northstar. Northstar is not just Canadian, he’s French-Canadian and a Montreal native! There’s even a little bit of Quebec history in his background, as he was a member of the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) before joining Alpha Flight, a Canadian, government-sponsored superhero team. For those of you who don’t know, the FLQ was a radical separatist group that did terrorist acts all in the name of Quebec’s sovereignty movement. Northstar, known as Jean-Paul Beaubier at the time, left the FLQ when he got wind of their terrorist activities.
Another interesting fact is that he’s the first openly gay Marvel superhero! That sealed the deal for me. The downside of choosing him though is the fact that his superhero costume is black and white, which is pretty limiting. That did not deter me from creating an outfit worthy of a superhero.
Because I wanted an outfit that would scream superhero instead of just being inspired by Northstar’s color palette, I went for skintight clothes, hence the bodysuit and the leather jeans. The white boots were the perfect wink to Northstar’s own white boots, the black stripe going well with the pants. I completed the look with a handbag with star details as well as two star studs from Canadian jewelry company Birks (which was founded in Montreal).
The title? It’s Quebec’s official motto, which you can see on our license plates.
Extra fun fact: Northstar has a twin sister, Aurora, who is also a superhero and who’s costume is basically a copy of her brother’s. This means that this outfit could also work for Aurora.

Hats MARLENE TOP HAT (£1,250.00)
Today’s theme for Color Me Valentine is “What’s you sign?” Well, because I don’t like it when people judge me based on my sign alone before knowing me (believe me, there are people out there who do that), I will start with this description that I feels fits me:
You have a great need for other people to like and admire you. You have a tendency to be critical of yourself. You have a great deal of unused capacity which you have not turned to your advantage. While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally able to compensate for them. Disciplined and self-controlled outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure inside. At times you have serious doubts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing. You prefer a certain amount of change and variety and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations. You pride yourself as an independent thinker and do not accept others’ statements without satisfactory proof. You have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others. At times you are extroverted, affable, and sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary, reserved. Some of your aspirations tend to be pretty unrealistic. Security is one of your major goals in life.
Do you also see yourself in that statement?
If you said yes, well, you’ve just experienced the Forer Effect, also known as the Barnum Effect. Barnum as in P.T. Barnum, the circus guy, who inspired the current outfit. Why do I say that? Because that is the exact statement Bertram Forer gave to all his students, making them believe it was a unique personality analysis based on a personality test they had completed prior. They had to rate it on a scale of 5 about how much it applied to them. The average rating of that class of 39 students? 4.26/5. Not bad for a generic analysis Forer created using various horoscopes.
What is the link between astrology and the Barnum Effect? Well, the Forer effect “refers to the tendency for people to give high accuracy ratings to personality descriptions that, although said to be unique, can apply to the general population,” and astrology relies a lot on that to appear credible. It makes you feel like the description is specifically made for you buy asking you for your birthday and your birth chart, and we often fail to realize that those traits could be applied to almost anyone. Why? Well, there’s something called metacognition: the awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes. Basically, it’s easier to know what applies to us than what applies to others since we know ourselves so well. How should I know if John as a tendency to be critical of himself, but I know I do, right?
Now, you may tell me, “But I just do it for fun! I don’t actually judge people based on their sign. I just find it funny how sometimes I am so much like my sign.” Which, in and of itself is fine. Astrology makes you feel connected to the Universe, make you feel like your life as a purpose. Even if science as disproven it countless of times... But as long as you keep that in mind, and that you should not judge someone based on their sign, I guess it’s ok...
Also, did you know that the target audience of astrology are women? In the words on Julia Hemphill, a sociologist at York University: “Astrology is an unempirical epistemology that's peddled to women as a way of understanding themselves and the world. All you have to do is open a 'women's magazine', and you'll inevitably see at least one or two pages devoted to astrology. The same pattern is evident in television programming for women.”
Do with that information what you will, but just know that if you ever ask me for my sign before getting to know me, I will tell you to guess before walking away.
While I could go on and on about how, for example, I could easily link your personality to your upbringing rather than your sign, or how the signs that was in the sky when you were born is not the one you think was there because of precession, I will leave you with these words of Carl Sagan: Astrology suggests a dangerous fatalism. If our lives are controlled by a set of traffic signals in the sky, why try to change anything?

Top: Dorothy Perkins Raspberry Broderie T-Shirt (£22.00) | Skirt: Jigsaw CROCUS DRAPE SKIRT (£98) | Shoes: Repetto Lili ballerinas (€225.00) | Handbag: Disney Japan スティッチ トートバッグ Tee&Aloha (3,190円) | Necklace: Disney Lilo & Stitch “Ohana” Bar Necklace ($39.99) | Headband: Claire’s Antique Gold Double Band Headband with Leaves ($7.50)
Today’s “Color Me Valentine” theme is: Duos & Besties! Honestly, the world of Disney has a plethora of duos and besties, but I decided to go for Lilo & Stitch because I relate to Lilo having a hard time being accepted by the other kids because her interests are different. As for Stitch, he may be the very personification of chaos, but that only makes his sweet and vulnerable moments even more endearing.
So, the outfit was inspired by Lilo’s hula outfit, the bag representing very clearly Stitch. When I saw that Ohana necklace on shopDisney, I knew I had to include it in the outfit, since the message of the movie is the importance of family, whether it is the one you were born with or the one you created for yourself.

Today’s theme for “Color Me Valentine” is “Bring Me Flowers”. Probably because a certain yellow flower plays an important role in Tangled and because of all the flowers in her braid, I decided to create a Rapunzel-inspired outfit.
It’s actually the second Rapunzel outfit I create, so I used the same handbag and shoes since they are perfect for such a look.
Fun fact: Rapunzel and I both agree that a frying pan is a great weapon!
