I just saw ANOTHER post lamenting this change, so I'm just gonna say "fuck it" and make a how to do the thing post, and if I'm misunderstanding the outrage... lol, this is tumblr, I'm sure someone will tell me.

Currently, if you want to go to a post in the middle of a reblog thread, you have to click the empty space in what I call the reblog header. The reblog header is the space that holds a user's name and reblog details, and on desktop, it turns a different color when you move your cursor over it. It's this space:

It doesn't change colors on mobile, obviously, because no cursor, but I think tapping is a little more intuitive on mobile anyway and afaik this particular thing has been this way here for a while now...? Whatever. Anyway, that's how you get to a mid-thread reblog!

(I actually do kinda like this new setup. It's not perfect, it can be annoying if someone's URL is long or if I accidentally click "Follow" instead of the header space. But overall, the space to click into a prior reblog is bigger now and I like that. I don't think I'll have to worry as much about mouse precision or drowsy coordination issues, which is nice. Maybe I'll be able to use the desktop version more.)

However, this means that in order to see "prev tags," you apparently have to click into the notes view and scroll until you find them. That's annoying for those who want to see them, and I can't blame anyone for being irritated. If you're new here you may be surprised to learn "prev tags" is fairly recent, so my recommendation (if you're looking for an alternative) is to put the actual tags from the user you're reblogging from, instead. This was normal prior to the "prev tags" trend if you wanted to share tags without screenshotting them, and it seems like tumblr has made it super easy now. The mobile app now automatically suggests the previous tags, and on desktop, they show up in a dropdown when you click to tag your post. Personally, I like to put "<-borrowing your tags bc funny" or "<-stole your tags for truth" or something right after, so I don't feel like I'm taking credit for someone else's phrasing. But either way, it's handy for your followers to be able to read the tags you liked without having to click to a different blog.

I'm hoping this particular change will be seen as useful after the rocky adjustment period is over.

All this being said, I personally like these particular changes, but I wish Tumblr would not roll out changes as rapidly as they seem to be recently. Either change everything at the same time or give it a rest, holy shlamoly! I stopped using Facebook because it seemed like every time I opened it, something was different, and it became jarring and uncomfortable to try to use. I'm starting to have a similar feeling about tumblr, and I don't like it.

Hi! Welcome to AO3:)

since I'm not sure how much you know already, the background (background as interpreted by me: I am not speaking on behalf of the OTW) is: Ao3 is run by the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), the nonprofit that also runs Fanlore and publishes Transformative Works & Cultures. Anyone who has donated $10 to the OTW in the last year, and chooses "yes I want to be a member" at checkout is an OTW member. (This is not the same as having an ao3 account.) Every year, there is an election to fill either 2 or 3 seats on the Board of Directors. OTW Members (i.e. people who donated between 7/1/21 and 6/30/22, in this case) get to vote on this.

Most of the time, this election is only really followed by people on fail_fandomanon. Sometimes, it isn't.

Things the Board of Directors does: writes posts to send out to the general public when Things Are Happening (the recent csam attacks, the requests for more antiracism measures.) Writes posts to send to volunteers when Things Are Happening (see prev.) Keeps track of what all the committees are doing and how it ties in with whatever the strategic plan says they should be doing. Deals with the IRS/US laws. Approves large funding requests. Deals with emails that someone else has deemed outside their own wheelhouse. Herds cats. Proposes priorities. Points at something shiny, pats the org on the flank, and says "walk that way, walk that way!! Come on buddy, you can do it!!". etc etc etc.

Things the Board of Directors doesn't do: unilaterally determine ao3 content policy. Let us use the word "porn" on ao3 drive merch. Make decisions that are going greatly affect other volunteers' work without input and some level of agreement from said volunteers.

Anyway. This year, one of the five candidates for the three open board seats is Tiffany G. (More information about all the candidates and their platforms is at https://elections.transformativeworks.org)

Tiffany is a tag wrangler from an unspecified country that is, from context, assumed to be China. The candidate Q&A can be read here. Her answers were a little bit confusing, but she said she wanted to update the ToS policies on 'pedophilic and illegal content' because, quote, "people think we host child porn content and such things... It might... be helpful to clarify that to the public." Further down she said:

a) I support 100% “maximum inclusiveness of content”, yet there is always a boundary to everything. Since OTW is already an influential org, we need to protect our image and hold a better image to the public. I want the public to think of us as an inclusive and socially responsible community. So in general, we have to do something to change. Things like making the rating system more specific and obvious to users will be what I want to do. b) Not really restricting the content being posted. I hope it is like more warnings and ratings for posting work so people know what to expect. And all of these are not surprising to people who do not wish to see this.

I took this to mean "she wants to clarify to outsiders that ao3 does not host csam, is not only for erotica, and update the ratings and warnings system." I don't think that those things are necessary or should be a focus of the org, which is part of why I didn't vote for her.

Other people took it to mean "Tiffany is against pornographic or underage works and wants them to be banned." Some people took this, combined with her nationality, to the conclusion of "Tiffany is a secret plant of the Chinese Communist Party who wants to join the board, get all the ao3 user data, and then have the users from mainland China arrested" (despite the fact that this is not information the board would have access to, if for no other reason than ao3 is blocked in China so anyone trying to view the site from mainland china has to use a VPN anyway.) Some people are upset that the OTW elections committee "allowed" her to run in the first place, because they think that not letting anyone with opinions the current board or elections committee didn't like is an absolutely great precedent to set.

There are a bunch of comments on tw.org, and some in fail_fandomanon, that give more context to her comments in terms of Chinese fandom (though most posters still disagree with her position.)

This got... longer than planned. But to the question "Is tiffany getting elected actually bad" - If my interpretation of her statements are correct, I think it would be annoying, because she does not have the experience I think that being on the Board requires, and focuses on priorities I disagree with. Which isn't to say she'd never have a valuable perspective or ideas about something, but there are four other candidates that I think are much better suited to it at this point in time. If the people who think she is an antishipper bent on censorship are correct, she could probably make life very annoying for the rest of the board-- but considering the rest of them are not pro-censorship, I can't see how she'd have much influence in that direction in the org as a whole.

If the people who think she's doing espionage on behalf of the CCP are correct, then... look, I can't even finish that sentence because I find the idea of the CCP deciding that a) they need to get ao3 user data and b) the way to do that is to run a clearly unqualified candidate in a public board election absurd.

the tl;dr of this tl;dr is that there's a lot of fearmongering going around, and a lot of accusations and hate (and racism. let’s be real a lot of this is racism) directed her way. I don't know her, so I don't know what her "real" opinions are, but regardless of who wins the board election, ao3 is not going to be censored any time soon.

if for no other reason than if the Abuse team was told on top of all their other work, they now had to assess and remove fics reported for being "problematic", they would say "we'd prefer not to" and then proceed to not do it.

It's awesome that people are realizing the board elections and OTW membership are a thing now, though. We kept talking about how to encourage membership, and "running a very dramatic and wanky election" did not occur to us. In retrospect, I don't know why.

I wrote this scene of exes to lovers some days ago and need opinions

context: Buck and Eddie dated after 3x10 till 3x15 when Eddie ended their relationship for "not to fall in love" cause it would make everything not convenient on work. But after lightning he can't deny he's in love and he wants to try again and tries to wait for Buck to feel better after lightning and when Buck in 6x15 talks about Natalia Eddie thinks it's too late and tries to date Marisol but after one date he goes to Buck and tell him he loves him

He never let Buck love him how the man did, but Buck still showed it to him.

But he hates that right now Buck is not just showing that he still may love him, he also shows Eddie he hates him, showing him he’s hurt. Showing that Eddie hurt him and still does it. And Eddie wants to make it better. 

He wants to put his medic hands on the wounds he created, invited under Buck’s skin, on his heart, and heal it. 

Thinking about best ways to put the bandages on Buck’s heart to give Eddie time to find the way to make Buck trust him with this again, to give him chance to keep it in his hands forever, Eddie feels how Buck ends the kiss, but doesn't go more than some centimeters from their faces.

Teal meets hazel for the first time tonight.

“I hate you so much right now,” opposite to his words, Buck only squeezes his waist tighter, almost till his nails can make him bleed.

Eddie wants to bleed. He carves all the pain and poison of the last days to go away with some dots of blood. He wants Buck to make him bleed how Eddie left him years ago with a bleeding heart.

“I thought I had stopped hoping. I thought I had finally moved on from you. Three years, Eddie, I was hoping for three years. I dated Taylor and sometimes hoped to wake up with you, not her, but all those times told myself to stop. I tried so hard all those years to move on, but I-I held on you, on pieces of you I still could have, so hard till I felt like trash, like a failure, like I wasn’t enough, but I never could stop. You always let me hold on to you, and I thought you do it for Chris, that you hold on me and let me hold on you for Chris, and you would never do it for us, for me. And when I found powers to finally feel like I moved on, like I’m ready to keep the hope about you aside, like I’m ready to think about my happiness, to put me first, you-you went and said you loved me,” Buck shakes his head from side to side, closing his mouth and clenching his jaws so tightly, “and I'm like a fool coming back after one snap of your fingers,” Buck is crying and Eddie knows he is the reason for every tear from blue eyes, knows he's the reason Buck is so hurt, but he's ready to beg for forgiveness every day, he's ready to never stop trying, he's ready to always admit when he hurt people he loves, even if he did it unintentional. 

“Don't start it if you’ll get scared and break up with me again. I will stay only if you promise to never do it again. Scream at me, cry with me, cry alone, have your time to collect your thoughts and come back to me, but-but don't break up with me, promise me. Promise me, Eds, or I will go away and never get back. Not for loving you at least. I’m tired of holding on to people who don't need it. Who doesn’t ready to work with me to keep us alive, to keep magic when we need fight for it,” Buck looks at him with tears streaming down his face but with face impression showing he is determined to go away if Eddie is not going to be on one page right now, ready to protect his heart and fight for himself. 

And Eddie loves him for finally putting himself first, even above Eddie’s feelings. “I promise, Evan. I promise I'm done running from my feelings. I'm done running from problems. But most importantly I'm done running from happiness. I'm ready to admire all the magic around us when it’s so easy and work for it and our love when we should if it's with you,” Eddie joins their foreheads. “I want to love you when I can, to never feel how I felt after lightning. Tomorrow isn't promised to anyone, and I want to love you today and tomorrow and all next days like the day before and only more, not just hope for the possible tomorrow to start. I want to start today,”

hey!! thanks so much for asking :D

don't take my word as law, of course, (in general and) because Bakugo is actually a character who i project A LOT on in terms of like... perfectionism, insecurity, self-doubt and shame (kin moment LMFAO)... so most of my characterization comes from the way eye react to embarrassment, both my own and other's, in situations of all different kinds (like romantic ones, or slapstick ones, etc). it's a feeling that i've literally always hated.

but/so, because i lean more on the Bakugo whose personality (in Cee's words) is insecurity based, i think he tries to avoid embarrassment at ALL costs, because embarrassment = defeat and/or therefore, shame.

in my mind, it's related to his journey of going from overconfident + feeling on top of the world, to... realistic and capable of humility, both in terms of his skills AND personality. even if he's at a point where he can confidently (and aggressively) say he's a good hero/lover/friend/etc... there's still (or, there becomes) this desire in him to avoid the potential failure of being too much or doing too much (aka: acting like the same person he was before and during high school)

so i'd say... i like characterizing Bakugo as being shy and hesitant and careful (in a sense) before he's confident that he has you (or whatever thing) FOREVER. like a built-in safety feature to avoid doing something he'd regret, or become embarrassed by his treatment of others... until he knows for sure he'll get the result he wants. it's part of why i think he's such a hard worker, too :')

(and in a non-romantic context, this might be: not talking about a new move w/ his quirk that he hasn't perfected, or saying he's won XYZ when he hasn't yet.)

there's also the similar depiction of him sort of... leaning into the feelings of embarrassment (defeat) for the end reward... but as someone who has always like. despised that kind of shame and exposure... i just don't really see it being something he likes. but it makes sense too as another result of that journey.

i really, REALLY hope this makes sense!

Between you and me.: If Tumblr's recent UI change finally kills off the "prev tags" thing, I wouldn't actually be that mad. That's always been incredibly unintuitive and very annoying to read. "prev tags" was never a feature, it was a habit, and a bad one at that. Copy and paste the tags into your post, like we used to, damn it.

But at the same time, I am not loving the UI they did add. Clicking the whitespace to do stuff? That is by no means more intuitive. Clicking the timestamp in the ellipsis menu, which is how you can still get to the previous reblog, that's even less intuitive.

The problem is that there are so many different places you could want to navigate to, and the UI does not make it clear which one you'll end up at:

The post in the context of the blog from which you're seeing it

The post in the context of the blog from which the person you saw it from reblogged it

The post in the context of any given blog that made an addition to the post, and also the original poster

The actual main blog view of any of these people

I don't know how to design a UI that allows you to go to all of these and is clear about which link does what. I'm not even able to describe all these navigation concepts succinctly. I do know it's a hard problem, and I do think it's good that Tumblr is experimenting, and I'm even willing to give up "prev tags" for a good solution to this.

But the approach they're trying right now (early June 2023) is not yet a good solution.

Hello, I'm once again asking you about your OCs because I'm curious! I hope that's okay? Who are Iphi and Jack? I love the first one's name. And if I remember right Jack is aro? That's neat, I haven't really seen a lot of aro characters before! /pos

Thank you for the ask!!! Sorry this is pretty late btw, I haven’t had time to answer it lol

(That’s Iphi on the left, Jack on the right. First is a picrew, second isn’t my art but like. I haven’t drawn Jack yet so that’s kinda their ref for now)

But it is rant time!! Imma start with Iphi! Because I kinda need to explain her to give context for Jack’s lore. 

So Iphi is the god of sacrifice in this little fantasy world I made, Kunyang! She’s a pretty old god, a couple of thousand years old, but she’s still the second youngest one lol.

In Kunyang, gods are born when they sprout from the seeds of the god tree. The god tree is in the divine realm, which is a different realm entirely from the physical realm, but very rarely, a god seed can arrive in the physical realm.

Anyways, this seed fell into the hands of a very magically powerful person. They had magic potential that could honestly rival a god- and yeah, they believed they were destined for great things because of it. So, they were determined to be the person who caused the god seed to sprout.

So in Kunyang, there was once this library called the Archives, run by the god of knowledge himself, Ephius. This person went to Ephius, and they were told that the seed was for the god of sacrifice. Ephius told the person that to sprout a god seed, they’d need sacrifices from thousands of people. This person wanted to do it, all by themself.

And so, they sacrificed everything. Family, friends, fortune, and fame. All gone, in the hopes of making a legacy. The seed did not sprout, because it wasn’t enough. So this person decided that they would need to make a very big sacrifice, one big enough to make the seed sprout.

They decided to banish the Archives from the physical realm into the divine realm, sacrificing humanity’s access to the library of all knowledge. And that was indeed a big enough sacrifice to give birth to a new god!

And that’s how Iphi was created. But the thing is- that’s really not how you’re supposed to create a god. So she was kind of corrupted from birth. This corruption prevented her from having a lot of character traits that one might consider important to being human.

Iphi does not feel happiness, or satisfaction. No sorrow or regret. Nothing of that sort. But she is working towards a goal: and that is creating a legacy. Having an effect on the world. (Her only contributor to her creation imprinted heavily on her.)

And because of that, she is very active in all manners of sacrifice. Every day, she’s constantly getting people to make sacrifices to her, amassing followers in many different lands. This also increases her powers heavily.

The way her powers work, they’re kinda like payment based. She gets someone to sacrifice something for her, and she can create something else of equal value to that something. (The more important that something was to the person who sacrificed it, the more she can create and do.) Like, she could make a giant wall of fire, or acid rain, or bury a country in gold if she had enough magic. Which she absolutely does. But she mostly saves the magic potential she receives for later.

And also, Iphi doesn’t truly care about anything other than making a mark on the world. She doesn’t mind if people die or suffer because her sacrifices took something too important- if anything, she wants to do that, because it’s quite a way of making your mark on the world.

Oh, and I gotta add- she can’t do this all without a little help! And that’s where Jack comes in.

They’re also a couple thousand years old, but quite younger than Iphi. So they used to be a court jester. Mortal and everything. They should have had a life of a normal length, be just another person in the world, but then they fell in love with Iphi.

And yeah they’re aromantic! It’s not romantic love, it’s alterous love. But yeah they felt a deep emotional attraction, and they wanted to be in a relationship (not a romantic or platonic one though). Anyways, Iphi doesn’t feel the same way. She doesn’t love Jack. But she thought it was convenient to have someone in love with her, and to keep them around, so she offered Jack a sacrifice.

She’d give them eternity, and they would be her servant.

Jack honestly didn’t want to do that at first, but then they had a near-death experience, and agreed to her terms.

So Iphi took their physical body, and also their independence.

Because it would be inconvenient if her servant got bored or wanted to take back the sacrifice. So Jack quite literally cannot think unless she wills it. They’re barely conscious until Iphi needs them, and only then can they think again.

Jack isn’t even aware this happens. To them, it feels like they just woke up, or they just simply forgot what happened during that time

Iphi also messed with Jack’s mind a bit, to amplify their devotion. And yeah, Jack is completely, utterly devoted to her. They would die for her, they’d be tortured for her, they would kill for her too. Nothing is off the table. They’d do anything she says. And they truly love her.

Jack mostly stays in the divine realm, usually, until Iphi sends them to the physical realm to do something for her. That something is usually extorting people to get more sacrifices. Jack pretty much curses people, and then offers to remove that curse in exchange for a sacrifice. (That’s how Janessa got cursed, actually [have I talked about her?] but Jack forgot they cursed her lmao.)

All the fanfic writers and artists and kind people in the fandom are doing so so much to erase the narrow minded ideologies involved in that franchise. You think they support JKR?

JKR was the one who named a black guy 'Shacklebolt' (fine, it didn't bother me when I was little because I didn't know much about anything). She's the one who had a single somewhat-main asian character and then reduced her to a "clingy pathetic girl" because a young girl who's emotional and confused and who's boyfriend just freaking died is not a ''strong female representation". She's the one who had imperialistic contexts in a species in her stories and then mocked the only girl who tried to do something about it.

You think I support her transmisogyny? You think I support her white supremacist ideas? Buddy you think I'm white?

I just saw someone defending Snape saying that he had no personal reason/motive to save Katie Bell and i don't know i COULD be wrong but isn't that what teachers do? When your student is in danger, a teacher helps them, right?

(I have written her before, surprisingly! Admittedly, in about the furthest thing you could expect from her typical context: of all things, a Prince of Egypt crossover AU site. It was definitely an interesting time, though the site didn't last very long. Still, the second iteration of the site was from 2014, the first year I feel like my RP writing actually became decent, so I feel okay sharing a post from that site with only a few tweaks to it xD As fun as she was to write back then, however, I feel like I might struggle to keep her up long-term.)

"Annie? Colle? Oh dear, where are they? Dani?"

Paws padded softly as they carried their owner through this place, her lovely brown eyes wide and worried as she searched for any sign of her daughters. She hadn't seen any of the three since the family had been separated, had heard no word of them even, and Lady was terribly worried. It was this that had drove her to the village - if it could even be called that - time and again whenever she had a free moment, searching desperately for her children.

Not that Lady oblivious to her own danger being here. The tag hanging from the now-chafed leather of her collar proclaimed her status; and her fur, still neat and soft as it had ever been, backed up that she was a worker in the palace. Many, here, were those who resented Pharaoh Rameses - and not without reason, in her eyes - and she was aware of the target it painted on her head...

But for the sake of her daughters? Any risk to herself was worth it.

Finally, she decided she had to risk it. Searching wasn't getting her anywhere fast, there was a lot of ground still to cover, and she had no hope of doing so all by herself: she would have to ask someone, and simply weather whatever ire they had to direct her way. Noticing the odd duo of a pony and a bear nearby, Lady gathered her courage and approached.

"Excuse me, I don't suppose either of you could help me?" She sounded almost apologetic in her tone. "I'm looking for my daughters. I just know they're in this awful place somewhere."

Yes prev tags are stupid but ultimately why the "can't click on previous reblogs" suck is because how the FUCK am I ever supposed to explore new things if I can't go to the ORIGINAL post and see what op tagged it as? It could be fanwork or original, it could be an art medium I don't recognize, hell sometimes it's just really fun seeing the conversations op will have with themself in the tag section that you can't even see in the "reblogs with comments" section.

Not to mention! I really liked being able to go down rabbit holes of going through older reblogs, seeing what other posts were reblogged around that time, and rise repeat with other blogs! Yes I wasn't "interacting with new content" by doing so, but just because the content isn't new doesn't mean it can't still be loved. For years this place had multiple gags about how you could be reblogging a 10 year old post without knowing it. And while timestamps are nice and can provide better context to conversations, I feel like it's made some people "more aware" of the ages of the posts they're reblogging.

Let me have my seven year old fan art rabbit holes damn it. Tumblr you are effectively causing the system to change for the worse. Don't mimic other social medias that are failing because they made bad decisions. Keep being you and undo some of these changes already
