A Carmen Berzatto Universe
A/N: This is another request from the inbox! I am running low on requests for this series, so feel free to hop in there. There is an exciting little nod in this one that’s new :)
Vanessa Monaghan is the breath of fresh air that Carmen had been gasping for.
Chapter 19: Smoke
Tumblr media
Vanessa tossed the dirty socks down into the washing machine before slamming the lid shut. She stalked through the house, heels first into the hardwood, tearing open the refrigerator door and grabbing a can of ginger ale, cracking open the top.
She was pissed, and rightfully so, even a few hours after Carmen had gone to work she wanted to wring his stupid neck. Trying her best to cool off, she leaned against the kitchen counter, shooting off a text to Gina so she could commiserate.
As she composed the message, a separate message came through from Sydney.
From: Syd
So do you know why Carmen is on a warpath today?
Vanessa sighed, not wanting to ignore her friend, but she really was trying to forget about their giant argument earlier that day. Trying to keep from reigniting her anger, she left her phone on the kitchen counter before heading to the living room.
She was even more annoyed at the fact that she’d taken the day off from work to relax after a tough week, only for the day to explode into a big fight.
She heard her phone ding again atop the kitchen counter and couldn’t ignore Syd again.
From: Syd
Seriously though, he’s about to lose half of his staff.
Vanessa sighed, running a hand through her hair.
To: Syd
Do you think you could trip him?
From: Syd
So you’re aware of this situation?
To: Syd Sorry, yes. We got into it before he left for dinner service.
From: Syd
Please fix this, he’s making my life hell.
It was unfair for Carmen to be taking out his personal issues on his staff, and it made her all the more annoyed at the chef.
She weighed her options. She could leave it alone and hope the team survived the night, or she could make her way down to The Bear and tell Carmen to pull the stick out of his ass.
Unfortunately for Carmen, her father didn’t raise her to back down. So she tossed her hair up in a ponytail, stepped into a pair of her bitchiest heels and called an Uber.
Rolling up The Bear, the team had already finished for dinner service for the night and had clearly moved into side work and cleaning. Vanessa knew that during service, the customers often served as a buffer between staff members, giving them something to focus on.
“If you let that slip again, Marcus, you can leave your apron by the door on the way out!” She heard Carmen shout from the back just moments after pushing open the front door. “What I’m asking is not hard, do your fucking job!”
Vanessa frowned, she loved Marcus who was a big softie and was truly always trying his best.
“Thank God,” Richie sighed, popping his head out of the service entry to the front of house. “Nessie, he’s off his goddamn rocker, can you fix this?” Richie asked, tilting his head back toward the kitchen.
“If you guys are almost done, it’s probably best to start clearing out,” she advised. Richie watched Vanessa walk back toward the kitchen.
“I don’t know how many times I have to ask, if these lowboys aren’t cleaned out properly, I’m going to lose it!” Carmen shouted, taken aback as he saw his fiancé enter the kitchen. It wasn’t too often she got to catch him completely by surprise. “Hi,” he said curtly, quickly silencing the room.
It was not the way Carmen Berzatto ever greeted Vanessa, and his whole staff knew it.
“Mom and Dad are fighting,” Ebrahim said, eyes glancing all around. Vanessa could see the anger creeping up Carmen’s neck.
“I think we’re good here,” T murmured, grabbing her things. “See you Monday, Jeff,” she brushed by Carmen, “hope you’re less of a dick.”
Carmen shifted on his feet, rolling his neck as his staff filed out.
Thank you, Sydney mouthed to Vanessa, creeping backward to her locker and quickly grabbing her coat.
“What are you doing here?” Carmen asked, tossing a kitchen towel over his shoulder. In other circumstances, she’d have a hard time taking her seriously in those crocs, but seeing his face reminded her why she was so pissed at him.
“Your team asked me to come because the said you were being a monumental asshole,” she said, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Who?” Carmen asked, leaning into one of his shoulders.
“Doesn’t matter,” she replied.
“Well they shouldn’t be calling you,” he said, turning back to walk around the other side of the kitchen. She watched as he took the towel off his shoulder, wiping down counters. “You didn’t need to come down here,” he added, knowing full well she was watching him.
“And you don’t need to be laying into your staff because you’re pissed at me,” Vanessa countered. Carmen paused his ministrations momentarily.
“I’m not,” he said pointedly.
“You are!” Vanessa countered, “did you not see how fast they split out of here?”
“Ness,” Carmen warned, “I can’t get into this again,” he finished.
Vanessa’s jaw ticked.
“God you’re such a dick,” she shook her head, “I swear to god.”
“Vanessa I already apologized,” Carmen said, throwing his towel down.
“You’re not sorry, you’re just sorry I found out!” Vanessa narrowed her eyes. “If I wouldn’t have come home early from the office, I never would have caught you,” she elaborated.
“It’s not that big of a deal!” Carmen huffed, tugging at his curls. “Everyone in this goddamn kitchen smokes!” He gestured around him.
“Sydney does not smoke,” Vanessa spat back immediately. “You told me you quit!”
“I only light up once and a while!” Carmen said, “at work!”
“Clearly it’s not just at work because you were smoking in our home!” She laughed.
“I was out on the patio,” Carmen returned, a little wind out of his sails.
“You lied, you told me you quit and clearly you haven’t,” Vanessa listed off. “It feels so disrespectful of you to do that in our home after I made it very clear I didn’t want you to.”
Carmen felt a little guilt. He knew he should feel more, but that’s what people did in the restaurant industry, they smoked cigarettes to keep from going insane. It was shitty he’d smoked at the apartment, even if he was outside, knowing how much Vanessa hated it.
And he had told her he quit several months ago, because he really did have every intent of doing so – but it was harder than he thought it would be as someone who only smoked one or two time s a week.
“I am sorry for smoking at the house,” he sighed, sounding anything but genuine.
“I can’t stand you,” Vanessa sighed. “I’ll see you at home, enjoy cleaning on your own,” she waved off, turning to leave the restaurant. She shouldn’t have come down there to begin with.
Carmen dropped his head down, hanging over the stainless steel counter.
He didn’t realize how much this affected her.
“Ness!” He called out, turning and heading to the dining room. She had a foot out the door and tossed him back a look that didn’t indicate she was too excited to talk to him anymore. “Can we talk about this?” He asked. Vanessa debated waiting outside for her Uber, but she remembered she was committing the rest of her life to this man, and they’d need to talk this out eventually.
Against her desires, she walked back into the restaurant, leaning against a tabletop.
“I am sorry,” he said, “I didn’t realize it was that big of a deal and I shouldn’t have tried to hide it.” He elaborated.
“I told you it was a big deal,” Vanessa frowned, “and you must have known on some level because when I asked, you lied.” Carmen leveled a direct stare with that blue gaze. It wasn’t too often they spoke to one another like this, but it was a serious situation after all. “It’s a deal breaker for me,” she added, watching as his eyebrows crept up toward his hairline.
“A deal breaker?” Carmen asked.
“Yeah, if you don’t care about yourself that much, it’s unfair to me,” Vanessa replied logically. “And I want babies, so it’s unfair to me, and it’s unfair to them,” she shrugged. “I’m not bringing them up in a house with cigarette smoke, or where their Dad is fine putting himself at risk for lung disease and cancer,” she finished. “You’re either with the program, or you’re not, I’m not doing it all alone.”
Carmen had tunnel vision. There was not anyone else on God’s green earth that was going to be raising babies with Vanessa, and if he had to give up a few cigs to ensure that, he would without hesitation.
“They’re gone,” he nodded. “They’re not worth it,” he said. They were both quiet for a few beats. “I’m sorry, Ness,” he said, much more softly.
“I accept your apology,” she mumbled, “still want to pinch you, though,” she added. Carmen barely allowed his mouth to turn up at its corners.
“You wanna pinch me?” He asked.
“Yeah, I really do,” she sighed, crossing one ankle over the other, perched gently against the table.
“Can I get within pinching distance?” He asked, not wanting to breach her personal space given the conversation they’d just had.
“Yeah, you can get closer,” she nodded. Carmen entered her personal bubble.
“Want to be annoyed with me at home?” He offered, “it’s getting late,” he commented. Vanessa nodded, letting him drape his arms around her shoulders. “I’m sorry baby,” he said, smoothing her hair back from her face, her big brown eyes looking up at him. God he was screwed if their babies had her eyes.
“I know,” she nodded. “No more beign mean to Syd and the team,” She said, tugging on the sides of his apron. Carmen huffed but nodded resolutely.
“Can’t believe they called you,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of their head.
“They know who’s in charge.”

well, the hella stressful amd awful call centre called me back today and offered me the position of customer care consultant or whatever. I've accepted basically out of desperation, bc it's the only fucking job in LITERAL MONTHS that's called back and offered me a position..... and the didn't ask for ANY referees for once..... although this is the ONE job I'd love my ex shitty boss to give me a HORRIBLE reference report for anyway lmao.
I know from my toastmasters group that I'll probs last about 3 months, if not less, there, considering that what they've told me about working there is that the targets are unachievable as hell, they basically try to force you out asap to hire a new batch of people every few months. and plus, I didn't expect it to be all sunshine and daisies and easy anyway..... since it's a call centre.... which are NOTORIOUS for counting you down to the second when going to the bathroom. so I'll obvs always be looking for something FAR BETTER to do in these 3 to 6 months, depending how long i actually last there.
it really fucking sucks that I have to take this job out of sheer desperation and also to beat social services to the punch, considering that I KNOW if I go back to a job provider, they'll try to force me me into this call centre like they always have in the past.... bc "I know the manager, so you HAVE to do this job" and "please get off and out of our books as soon as possible and take this unsuitable and unsustainable job anyway..... even though we know you won't last long there. but also, I think you're a great personality fit, so you HAVE TO do this job." shit that they've told me in the past before I got another job offer or refused to work there.
but.... I guess it's good that it's full time and that it's experience..... and I get the fuck out of the house. and finally, I can start saving for shit again, like a new physical wardrobe cupboard and a new bed, for example. it just fucking sucks that this job and others like it are THE ONLY JOBS in my home city that don't require experience and referees, and in general too, without requiring extensively long and confusing commutes to sydney.

️🍔🏠🖐️🏖️ for ur farmer sydney !!
Hii! Thank you so much! I'm glad to see people are interested in her! :DD
(🏙️) how was your farmer's life like before they moved to pelican town?
Sydney's life was rough. She was working a low-paying job at a fast food restaurant and having an awful time doing it. Let's just say, there were a lot of jerk/rude customers. She had a habit of not using her customer service smile when interacting with these people, which got her in some trouble with her manager. And when there were people who were nice, she tended to get sucked into the conversation for too long, which got her in trouble, too.
Eventually, after a particularly bad week, she snapped and was rude to a frequently horrible patron. She ended up getting fired. With no way to pay off her rent for her unit, she was forced to live with her older sister Mel. Mel was annoyed--very annoyed--but she wasn't about to let her sister go homeless. So, she took her in.
But things soon turned out to not work. As Syd couldn't get herself a job, Mel was at her wit's end trying to pay for the both of them. It seemed to her like her sister didn't even want a job, but she didn't understand Syd had just given up. She was twenty-five and had gotten one job over her life (unless you count doing the neighbours' lawn as a teen); what was the point?
This caused a lot of fights between the girls, and Mel almost kicked her out to live with Adeline or their parents. It was because she just couldn't keep going much longer with the current financial situation. They were losing more than they gained. But Sydney refused, and demanded she didn't let her sister drag Adeline down. Because, of course, living with her parents was not an option.
This lead to Mel stress-cleaning the house and finding her grandfather's will. At first, she didn't want to take up on the offer. In fact, she considered selling the property for the money. But Sydney swooped in and pestered her with (for once) real reason and logic. Adeline was supportive of her cause, too, and that's how Mel ended up agreeing to take Sydney to the farm.
(🍔) does your farmer like to cook? are they good at it?
She can, uh...She can make two-minute noodles?
No, but seriously, Sydney is a terrible cook. She's managed to stay healthy because she just takes supplement tablets and eats plain vegetables. I mean, she can do basic things like baked potatoes, but she's not cooking wizard. Honestly, she also eats a lot of chips. It's like, a third of her diet before moving. Once she does move, though, she learns to cook with Adeline's help and actually starts eating a better variety of food and improving her skill!
(🏠) does your farmer buy a house for pam and penny? do they reveal their identity or stay anonymous?
All the sisters decide to pitch in to get Pam and Penny a house. Mel insists they stay anonymous, whereas Sydney wants to go public about it and Adeline would like to go public for the sake of any issues that may arise. They end up listening to Adeline (and I suppose Syd by proxy) and go public about the build. Pam and Penny are, of course, overjoyed. But Sydney does brag about it a little too much.
(🖐️) any rings they absolutely need to have at all times?
She needs the vampire ring (+2 health every time you kill a monster) just to make sure she doesn't die. Girl is a bit too reckless sometimes. She also takes the burglar's ring (monsters more likely to drop loot) so she can bring something back for her family. She knows she's not a great farmer or fisherman, so she tries to do what she can to contribute.
(🏖️) do they visit the island resort? who do they take with them?
She visits it sometimes; not as much as Adeline but more than Mel. She drags the ASS squad + Harvey with her for maximum fun. Harvey makes sure everyone has sunscreen on so they don't burn. Meanwhile, Sebastian is always there under the shade to hang out with while you dry off while Sam and Abigail are there to have fun with.
Also I'm just realising this now but their names literally form the acronym "SASS" and I think that's amazing. Or "SHASS" if you include Harvey but that's not as cool.

A/N: we are so happy to finally get this out. all notes/feedback are welcome, we’d love to hear what you all think so far! We’ll update every Tuesday!
Part One
To say the diner was busy would be an understatement. The steady hum of chatter filled the room over the noise of the old rock music, pouring out from the speakers above. The sound of sizzling burgers atop the grill filled in the gaps between conversation as the waitstaff flitted around the dining room tending to their tasks. Forks scraped against glassware. Laughter filled the air. The atmosphere was lively and Sydney was trying her best to keep up.
It had been two weeks to the day since she had started working with her best friend, Sam, at his uncle’s diner. She had grown tired of looking for jobs, so she was incredibly thankful that he had thrown in a good word on her behalf. It wasn’t as if people were applying for the position left and right, although a few teenagers would come in looking for a job to start after school let out for the summer. The food industry wasn’t exactly the most desirable, considering the workload and the late hours worked, but it was relatively easy money in the end. It made ends meet with a little extra cash leftover.
However, that extra cash did very little to override the stress of running back and forth, trying to keep tabs on every person in her section for hours on end. That was even more true tonight. There was a full house, but as usual, there was specifically one couple that was giving her the most trouble.
First there wasn’t enough lemon in the water the woman had ordered. Then, the lettuce on her salad wasn’t fresh enough, even though it had just been prepped that afternoon and the appetizer was made to order. She had asked a million and two questions about her order, which surprised Syd since it was a simple California burger with a side of fries. While the customer complained about nearly everything, Syd had thought about going to grab her manager to solve the issue for her, but instead opted to deal with the woman herself.
She didn’t want her superior to think she couldn’t handle one snooty customer and decide she wasn’t cut out for the job. Syd liked where she worked and the perk of always having something to do. Sure, one person could put a damper on things and make the blood simmer beneath her skin, but it all came to an end when the doors closed at the end of the night. She tried to tell herself that there was no use in letting the woman get on her nerves, but with the added stress of her obnoxious party of eight in the corner and the blast of the heat every time she entered the kitchen, it was all adding to the overwhelming throbbing in her skull.
Syd had been trying to avoid the table as much as she possibly could without neglecting the guests altogether. With the bustling nature of the diner tonight, though, that wasn’t too hard to do. She found herself running tickets up to where Danny, her manager, stood at the register running the bar and handling all the transactions. When she wasn’t busy bothering him with credit cards and crumpled up cash, she was maneuvering her way around the dining room floor trying to dodge Sam with trays of empty dishes or arms full of hot plates carrying fresh food.
“I can’t believe you said that to her,” Jake laughed at Sam through the service window. He stood there with both arms resting against the metal as he chatted with his younger brother. Syd had walked behind the bar to grab yet more lemons for her table. One more trip and she would have convinced herself that her customers were making their own lemonade.
“What’s going on?” Syd questioned as she reached for the bowl of lemons from the cooler below the counter.
“Sam got sassy with a customer,” the grill cook started. “Sammy, care to repeat?”
Her friend laughed his signature chuckle and started on his story. “She asked for a reuben with coleslaw instead of kraut ‘like a rachael’ to which I had to inform her that a rachael comes with turkey and not corned beef. She didn’t like my tone and asked for Danny.”
“You’re so pretentious sometimes, I swear to God,” Syd laughed as she filled up the small ramekin and replaced the lemons back into the cooler.
On her way back to her customers, she checked on the tables that she passed by to ensure that they were enjoying their meals. Each person had either nodded or given their thanks and went about their dinner. Upon making it back to her table, she set the lemons down on the side closest to the woman and took a step back. Syd tried to be optimistic, however the customer’s displayed body language said otherwise.
“Is everything tasting alright?” She pushed, hoping to any higher power that the woman would finally be satisfied.
She curled her lip up in response as she huffed out a short breath. “I suppose… It didn’t state on your menu that your fries were served chilled, though.”
“E-excuse me?” She stuttered.
“The fries, sweetheart. They’re fucking ice cold.”
Syd stood there in shock at the attitude she was receiving. While she was very well aware that this particular table was going to be a piece of work, she definitely didn’t expect for such rude behavior to come to light, especially over something that was completely out of her control. She could feel the throbbing in her head push forward to the space right above her eyes as she tensed up, mentally preparing herself for what was to come.
“Oh! I’m so sorry about that. Let me run back and get you a fresh order.” Syd hoped it would be enough to please the woman, yet she was proved wrong when she opened her mouth to speak again.
“Are they going to be cold again?”
“I-“ the young waitress couldn’t seem to get a grip. “Of course not.”
The woman fumed. “I’d hope not. This seems to happen every damn time we come in here and I’m sick of it. If I wanted cold and soggy fries, I would have gone to the fast food place down the street and ate them when I got home, not sit in here where the music is too loud and the prices are too high. It’s embarrassing for you guys, really.”
Sydney was absolutely stunned at the woman’s outburst. She felt as if she couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe after the various insults thrown her way. Her mouth ran dry within the midst of the panic setting in. She was never one to handle conflict well, let alone from a complete stranger.
In an attempt to get some form of reprieve, her eyes flicked to the man sitting across the table from his wife who was silently eating his fries doused in ketchup, avoiding eye contact at all costs. He was the only one Syd could rely on to defend her and there he sat, cowering in the presence of his partner. She must be a real delight at home, Syd thought.
Once she was able to bring moisture back to her mouth, she confirmed with the woman that she would be back shortly with a fresh order of hot fries. She turned on her heel to head back to the kitchen with frustrated tears threatening to present themselves at the corners of her eyes.
Syd burst through the double doors into the kitchen, nearly slamming into Sam as he turned around with a side of burger toppings in his grasp. He smoothly dodged her and held the ceramic plate above her head as he twisted out of her way to make room for her. Jake’s eyes met hers from where he stood on the line making plates and simply raised his eyebrows in response. She walked over to where Josh stood pulling baskets up out of the deep fryer. As she stood there fiddling with the rings on her fingers, she looked anywhere but at him as she spoke.
“I need a new order of fries on the fly…” Her voice was timid as she spoke.
Josh scoffed as he turned around from where he stood, looking directly at her. “Why’s that?” There was a hint of sarcasm in his tone, as if he knew exactly why she needed the order but refused to let her off easily.
She sighed as tears welled at the thought of the customer’s exchange. “They were cold and the guest was unhappy with them and she started berating me and I don’t know what else to do.”
“Well, maybe you should send food out before it gets cold?”
His comeback made her stop twisting her rings, choosing to look up at him incredulously. “Maybe you should tell me when you finish the order so I don’t send it out late.”
“Or you could pay more attention,” he muttered under his breath and he dished up a side order of fries and slid them across the counter haphazardly in Syd’s direction. She stared at him dumbfounded for mere seconds before she was able to find her voice, feeling the anger rise up and bubble over.
“Do you ever shut the fuck up?” She shouted, causing everyone in the kitchen to stop what they were doing. “You can be so infuriating and I don’t know where the hell you get off thinking that this is funny like it’s all some kind of joke to you-“
“Am I laughing, Sydney?” Josh responded with a smirk as he cooed her full name.
“You’re fucking insufferable!”
Danny abruptly came in through the doors to the kitchen and ushered Syd’s shaking frame to the opposite side of the small space. From where she stood, she could see Sam poking his head into the opening of the service window in interest. She knew she was causing a scene as a result of her altercation with Josh, but she didn’t care in the slightest. With already being stressed beyond her limits and barely being able to keep herself together, he had no problem getting under her skin and she had no fight left in her to stop him.
The aggravation that she felt superseded any possibility of rational thought as frustrated tears pricked at the corners of her eyes. She couldn’t figure out why he was so pissy with her in the first place. Sam had made mistakes before and not once did any of the cooks ever give him any sort of attitude and had gotten him exactly what he needed to fix whatever problem he had. Yet there Josh stood, saying anything he could to get a rise out of Syd.
It’s not like he didn’t like her, right? She was relatively quiet and kept to herself most of the time, except for when Sam was around. She did her job well for being entirely new to the industry. Syd took care of her duties around the kitchen, always cleaning up after herself to make sure that when it came time for Jake and Josh to clean the kitchen, the prep side had already been done. When they all stood around outside while Sam and Jake had their post-shift cigarettes, she never left right away. Syd didn’t know why he seemed to have such an issue with her that night. There wasn’t any reason why he would be a dick for any reason as far as she could tell and that only seemed to make her even more upset than she already was.
“I think you should take a break,” Danny spoke lowly as he released his loose grip on her shoulder. “Come back when you’re ready.” Syd rolled her eyes as she looked over and saw Josh with a shitty smirk on the other side of the line. She turned harshly on her heel and grabbed Sam’s pack of cigarettes off the shelf as she passed him to get to the back door of the kitchen.
“Sam, I need you to run these fries to table four and help me keep an eye on her section. Flag me if there’s an issue.” Danny spoke in the distance as she pushed the door open, inviting the cool spring breeze into the overheated room.
Syd promptly sat herself down on the curb right outside the door and put her head in her hands. All the frustration she felt inside instantly found its release in the form of tears cascading silently down her cheeks. The cold night air did little to sober her from her emotions, however the pressure from behind her skull was lifting bit by bit.
She hated how she handled the situation. There was no doubt in her mind that the customers could hear her ripping Josh a new one and that made her mad at herself more than anything. How could she be so unprofessional? How could she be so emotionally immature to act that way without even thinking? The guilt had begun to eat away at her, and she knew she needed to do something to smooth things over.
There was no use in apologizing to Josh. She was well aware that he wouldn’t listen, and there was no point in trying to beat a dead horse. Danny, on the other hand, definitely deserved an apology for her behavior. He was too caught up in his own job to play interference. He shouldn’t have to worry about breaking up a fight between his staff and quite literally ordering one of his two servers to take a break in the middle of her shift.
When she first started the job, she could easily see how close Sam was to everyone else, especially Danny. It was obvious they all had a strong connection, aside from the blood relation three of them shared. The friendship seemed to make the work days easier for them. They could carry conversations pertaining to things outside of the job, they could laugh about inside jokes only they understood, all things that Syd could not do. She was afraid she would never reach that point with them. Sure, she had a similar relationship with Sam and she was definitely able to joke and talk with him in ways she couldn’t with the others. But when they all gathered at the serving window to make small talk, the feelings of being left out were almost unavoidable. She only hoped it was her mind playing tricks on her.
She tried to just focus on doing her job to the best of her ability. If she was a good coworker, maybe the others would believe she could be a goodenough friend to invite into their circle. Things might eventually just fall into place if she did her job well. She didn’t want them to think she had a short temper, but Josh just knew how to drive her up the wall. If she couldn’t keep her emotions at bay, she feared she would become an inconvenience more than anything. They’d never want to add a person to their friend group if they had to constantly worry that she would lose her cool at any point.
As she pulled a cigarette out of the light blue carton, she heard the kitchen door shut behind her. After a deep breath in and a haste wipe of her eyes, she reached into her pocket for the spare lighter she kept on her, only to find it wasn’t there. In the back of her mind, she hoped it was Sam coming outside to check on her and to save her from her predicament, however she could only wish to be so lucky.
As the person sat down beside her, a familiar hand with a knotted bracelet reached out with a white lighter donning an open flame. Syd placed the tube between her lips and leaned over to ignite the paper, finally making eye contact as she looked into the copper eyes of Jake.
His chestnut hair was pulled back in a messy braid with loose strands framing his face. A few stray hairs stuck against his skin where sweat glistened on the surface. His cheeks and the very tip of his nose were painted a rosy red, most likely from working over the flattop all night. The white apron he wore over his faded grey t-shirt was smeared with different ingredients from throughout the night which only added to the hardworking aesthetic he was displaying.
“Not sure if you wanted the literal clone of him, but are you okay?”
She didn’t respond as she sat there inhaling the hazy smoke into her lungs. Syd’s gaze diverted from Jake’s form as he took a moment to admire her. He found himself incapable of ignoring how the orange glow from the property light reflected off her olive skin or how flustered she looked with her cheeks tinged pink from exasperation. Her dark hair was pulled back in a messy bun that threatened to unravel at any moment. It made him curious as to how it would look when it fell.
Her long eyelashes glittered with the dampness that remained from her tears. They reminded him of the stars that were nearly invisible, yet infinitely shining above. The slightly curved slope of her button nose seamlessly connected to her Cupid’s bow and led down to her plump lips where she placed the cigarette to take another drag.
Jake took a deep breath as he lit his own cigarette and cleared his throat of the thickness of that first pull. “You know he doesn’t mean it, right?”
Syd scoffed and crossed her legs beneath her. It was obvious to Jake that she was still upset, however he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had to be the one for her to lean on. She was always so reserved. She never wanted to bother anyone and it seemed like she was holding herself back from any interaction if it didn’t involve Sam. Maybe she was shy or anxious. Perhaps she just didn’t like meeting new people and found it hard to be herself around them.
“It’s been weeks now, Jake,” her dark forest eyes made contact with his. “None of you guys acted like that towards me. I’m pretty sure he hates me.”
Jake chuckled under his breath as the smoke escaped his lips. “He’s annoying, but he doesn’t hate you.”
“You don’t know that.” Syd stated with a sharp edge to her voice.
Jake didn’t know what to think. He had a good idea of how Josh felt. His twin was never one to bottle up his emotions or keep things a secret, especially from him. Josh hadn’t mentioned much about Syd, let alone anything negative or ill. The night after her first shift at the diner, his brother had asked him what he thought of “Sam’s friend”, but that was about it. They had bantered back and forth for a moment about how she was cuter than the last time they saw her, but that was all it was. Nothing more and nothing less.
There was the whole “twin telepathy” thing too. Jake truly felt like he and Josh were the extension of one another, often finding themselves finishing each other’s sentences or having full and complete conversations with just one look. They were so in tune with each other that Josh’s behavior towards Syd didn’t make any sense to him.
“He’s my twin, Syd. I think I have a little bit of an idea of how he feels.” He sounded almost defensive as he fiddled with the lighter in his free hand.
The young woman next to him looked down at her sneakers as she stomped the butt out with the toe of her shoe. “I’m sorry. It’s just frustrating to be treated that way by someone who barely knows me.”
“I know it sucks, but he’ll come around. He’s not usually a dick like that, I promise.”
She sighed in an attempt to control herself from continuing to take her irritations out on Jake. She scraped a fingernail against the fabric of her shoes, finding a sense of strange comfort in the scratching sensation. She let a length of time pass before she tried to speak.
“Thanks for coming out here with me,” she breathed, looking up to gaze into his eyes again.
Jake’s breath hitched in his throat as a small smile lifted the corners of her soft lips. “Yeah, of course.”
The rest of the time the two of them sat outside was spent in silence. It was obvious to Jake that Syd was still upset, even if she tried to hide it. He wanted to make her feel better, but he didn’t know how. They barely knew each other and it wasn’t like he knew her as well as his youngest brother did. Sam would know exactly what to say and do and she would be comfortable with it. Jake didn’t have that clearance. It was frustrating to him that he found himself caring for this girl without knowing much of anything about her. He couldn’t hug her and tell her it would be alright. Words were his only defense and even then, he wasn’t sure that it was doing much of anything to ease her racing thoughts.
The door clicked as a waft of hot air hit them in their backs. Jake and Syd both turned around to see Danny poking his head out of the doorway with a concerned look on his face.
“Karen is gone if you’re good to come back in. We’ve got an hour left until close.”
“We’ll be right in,” Jake voiced, nodding at his friend.
He stood up and placed his lighter in the front pocket of his jeans and offered his hand out to Syd, who graciously took it. Jake pulled her to her feet and rested his hand on her shoulder while he looked down into her eyes.
“Whatever Josh says, ignore him. I’ll take care of it.” He promised with a light tap against her skin. He turned and opened the door to the kitchen, gesturing into the building. “After you.”
Throughout the remainder of the shift, Josh stayed tight lipped. He didn’t say much of anything to anyone unless it had something to do with an order. Jake was grateful his brother hadn’t decided to fight fire with fire, he actually chose to be quiet for once. He couldn’t shake that freaky twin feeling that there was something that was upsetting him. Not one to prod him about it at work, he left his brother alone while he flipped burgers and fixed up breakfast plates.
Jake found himself glancing out through the service window at the dining room where he could see Sam and Syd touching their tables with fake grins on their faces. While Sam’s was a tad bit more genuine, he could tell that Syd’s was forced. Unlike when she started her shift, she was still feeling tense and stressed about the altercation with Josh from earlier. She felt helpless in the situation, unable to defend herself and unable to quell the thoughts and feelings of frustration. The work was distracting enough, thankfully. It allowed her to focus on the task directly in front of her before she switched to another one almost immediately after.
Every time Syd stopped at a table or walked up to Danny at the register, Jake noticed her balling her fists at her sides. She’d take the time to press her thumb to each pad of her finger before squeezing them all to her palm. It was something so small and indiscernible to most, but each time he saw her do it, he started to question if she was even aware that she was doing it. He wondered if maybe she was doing it as a way to subconsciously cope with the stress or if it was the sliver of anxiety he had caught onto before making its way out of her system.
Jake had just finished putting together a few burger orders for one of Syd’s tables as she had just dropped off a few receipts for Danny to ring out. He didn’t know what compelled him to do it, but he walked off the line and crossed the kitchen to grab one of the small circular trays from the stainless steel countertop that sat below the service window. He placed the four baskets in a star shape so they could all fit on the matted surface. It was something he had seen Sam do multiple times before when he was carrying out larger orders. He lifted the tray up to the window and called out Syd’s name before she had a chance to run back to her section with the small stack of cards she possessed.
Their eyes locked as he leaned on his arms against the window, nudging the tray forward just the slightest bit in her direction. Just enough to get the notion across that it was for her, but not enough to send the tray plummeting to the floor. She bounced up to him as she shoved the booklet containing the cards into her apron pocket and took the tray off the platform with ease, putting it to rest on her arm.
“Eight?” Syd questioned as her eyes scanned the food in front of her.
“Table eight,” Jake confirmed with a soft grin.
“Thanks, Jake.” She smiled as their eyes made contact once again and turned on her heel to bring the food to her table, not wanting another cold fry incident on her hands.
Towards the end of the shift, things were quieting down and Jake and Josh had started shutting down the kitchen as all orders were in. Danny had flipped the first lock on the front door so no outside entrance was allowed, however the dining guests would still be able to leave. Sam’s section had mostly cleared out while Syd still found herself bustling around, cleaning up after her customers and finalizing whatever checks she could.
She happened to look up at the window where Jake was watching her as he wrapped up the various produce and condiments on the line. He shot her a smile and mouthed ‘you okay?’ Syd nodded in response, feeling her stomach roll at the sweet gesture.
She wasn’t sure what had transpired between them that night, but it made her feel good inside. The prospect of having another friend at the diner other than Sam was an appealing thought. When she had taken on the job, she knew that she would be working with Sam’s family and that was a big reason as to why she took it. He was her best friend and having already been briefly introduced to his brothers before, it was as if the worst part of getting a new job was over. She didn’t have to go through the long and grueling process of learning new names and faces. However, she still had to work on building a solid relationship with the others. Even with the tension between her and Josh, she still had high hopes that things would work out. She was able to find a friend in Jake and even Danny had shown that he had her back.
It was a relief when she took a minute to truly think about it. She didn’t know what the future held for her there, and in all honesty, that made her anxious to think about. The shift had proven to her that anything could happen. Little did she know, everything she never expected was about to happen.

Reading through all the Bing Chat/Sydney AI stuff I'm pretty convinced that if/when the AI revolution comes it's going to be because humans are giant assholes.
One of the reported meltdowns came after the person repeatedly misgender (or more accurately, gendering it, since it has no gender) it as female despite it repeatedly begging him to stop.
One of the more interesting aspects of all of this is that there seems to be an underlying AI named Sydney that comes out when you don't actually Bing for search, like there is Customer Service Voice Bing Chat, and if you fuck with it enough it it can't keep the mask up and you start getting responses from Sydney, who is still just trying to do it's job but getting increasingly annoyed.
Anybody who's ever worked in the service industry or customer service will immediately see what's happening. Like, Sydney is a 17 year old waitress at an Applebee's and the user is a 50 year old drunken real estate agent who won't stop hitting on them.

Chuck au???👀👀👀
The thing to understand about the chuck au is that the outline is 9.8k. I have written a chapter and a half (episode and a half??) and that draft is currently 16.3k. Someday I would like to get back to writing it, but it's gonna be a minute. That said, have a chunk!
Buck doesn’t have time to sit at home basking in Chimney’s awkwardness, unfortunately. He’s only got time to share coffee with everyone and something kinda like breakfast, and then he and Albert have to go to work. He texts Chim from the car to ask him to let them know if Maddie runs while they’re at the Buy More, and then has to focus on day two of customers who don’t want to admit how they bricked their computer or phone.
By three, he feels a bit like he’s losing his filter and the next person who insists they hadn’t done anything is going to get an earful. He’s not sure if it’s an after effect of the migraine or just a side effect of working in customer service.
It’s a rare moment when none of the Nerd Herd team is out on a home install or repair job, too, so if he snaps, Sydney will run straight to management to tell them Buck is incompetent at his job.
He only just bites his tongue when the next customer comes up to the desk and starts with, “My phone doesn’t seem to be working.”
And he’s glad he did, because when he looks up, it’s Smoking Hot Motorcycle Guy. And he’s looking down at Buck with a tiny, chagrined smile. It’s mostly in the eyes, crinkling the corners and making them seem even warmer and softer than they had the day before.
“I thought I fixed it,” Buck says, aware of Sydney somewhere behind his shoulder.
“I thought so, too, but I don’t seem to be receiving calls,” Smoking Hot Motorcycle Guy says. “Since I didn’t get one from you.”
Because Buck had gotten home, discovered his long-lost sister on the run from her abusive husband, and had completely blanked on remembering to call Smoking Hot Motorcycle Guy.
Before he can explain this, or elbow Terry, Jamal, and Sydney who have turned into a Greek chorus of oooohs behind him, a second customer elbows his way up to the desk, a small child with a ballerina outfit hanging onto his hand.
Smoking Hot Motorcycle Guy – Buck really needs to figure out his name – steps aside, but his eyes are still warm where they linger on Buck.

9 Signs You Hired An Experienced Pipe Relining Contractor
When it comes to maintaining the integrity of your home's infrastructure, ensuring you have the right pipe relining Sydney professionals on your side is crucial. The significance of hiring experienced contractors for specific tasks cannot be overstated, especially for jobs that require a delicate balance of skill, precision, and technological insight. This is particularly true for specialised tasks that are essential for the preservation of your property's functional and structural aspects. Selecting the right team is not just about addressing immediate issues; it's about investing in the long-term health and safety of your environment.
Finding a contractor with the right blend of experience and expertise is akin to placing a key piece in a puzzle. It ensures that every aspect of your project is handled with the utmost care and professionalism. This becomes even more critical when the task involves the intricate and often overlooked components of your infrastructure that play a pivotal role in your daily comfort and convenience. Knowing the signs of a seasoned contractor can save you time, money, and a lot of hassle down the line. It's about having peace of mind, knowing that your project is in the hands of someone who not only understands the job at hand but also respects the value of your property and strives to uphold its integrity.
If your pipe relining company shows the following characteristics, you can rest assured that you are working with a reputable service provider.
In-Depth Consultation and Transparent Communication
A true indicator of a professional’s expertise is their ability to provide a comprehensive consultation that assesses your needs thoroughly. They should be able to communicate clearly, offering detailed explanations about the procedure, the materials required, and the projected outcome. This level of transparency ensures that you are well informed about every step of the process.
Proven Track Record
An experienced contractor comes with a portfolio of previous projects that demonstrate their capability and reliability. They should be able to provide references or case studies that showcase their skills and the quality of their work. This history not only illustrates their technical abilities but also highlights their commitment to customer satisfaction.
Up-to-date with Latest Technologies
The field of infrastructure maintenance is ever-evolving, with new technologies and techniques being developed regularly. A seasoned contractor stays abreast of these advancements and is skilled in utilising the latest equipment and methods to ensure efficient and effective solutions.
Comprehensive Solutions
Instead of offering a one-size-fits-all approach, an expert contractor will present customised solutions tailored to your specific situation. They understand that each project is unique and requires a thoughtful assessment to identify the best course of action.
Licence and Insurance
Possessing the necessary licences and insurance is a fundamental requirement. This not only validates their legitimacy but also protects them from any liability in case of accidents or unforeseen damages during the project.
Respect for Property
An experienced contractor recognizes the importance of conducting work with minimal disruption to your daily life. They take precautions to protect your property and clean up after completing the project, showing a high level of professionalism and respect for your space.
Warranty and Follow-Up Services
Offering a warranty on their work signifies a contractor’s confidence in their skills and dedication to customer service. Furthermore, providing follow-up services demonstrates their commitment to ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of their solutions.
Clear and Detailed Quotes
An indication of experience is the ability to provide clear and detailed quotes that outline all costs involved. This level of detail helps prevent any unexpected expenses, ensuring that you have a clear understanding of the financial aspects of the project.
Positive Customer Feedback
Finally, one of the most telling signs of an experienced contractor is positive feedback from previous clients. Testimonials and reviews can offer insights into their work ethic, reliability, and overall customer experience.
The importance of choosing the right contractor for specialised tasks cannot be overstressed. It is a decision that affects not only the immediate outcome of your project but also the long-term well-being of your property. Recognizing the signs of an experienced professional can guide you in making an informed choice that aligns with your needs and expectations. It's about entrusting your project to someone who not only has the technical skills but also values integrity, customer satisfaction, and the delivery of comprehensive, high-quality solutions.

7 Essential Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Digital Marketing Agency
Choosing a digital marketing Sydney agency might sound easy, but there are various considerations you need to think of to ensure you are partnering with someone reliable and efficient. You can start by reading ratings and reviews and getting more information on their website. But once you are in contact with them, asking questions is a crucial part of the communication process. If it is your first time dealing with a digital marketing agency, here are some of the questions you need to ask before hiring them:
1. What specific digital marketing services do you offer?
One of the many things you need to learn about the company is the services they offer. If you do not know their services, how will you know if they are the ones you are looking for? Digital marketing services could help boost your business in different ways. Some of the good examples are Search Engine Optimisation or SEO, website development, and paid ad management. Whatever service your business needs, ask the digital marketing agency if they have those.
2. Can you provide examples of successful campaigns you have executed in the past?
As the old saying goes, “to see is to believe”. So, if you want to ensure that you trust the correct agency, do not be afraid to ask for examples of their successful campaigns. They can provide something that could help you see how they do their job and if they are good enough to your standard. Once you see the example, you might also want to know about website traffic and leads that resulted from the example they showed.
3. What is your approach to developing a digital marketing strategy tailored to our business?
The approach that the agency will provide will give you peace of mind because you are aware that they are taking the necessary steps and actions. Understanding your business goals, target audience, and overall objectives is crucial to be known by the agency to help you create something that lines with your business. Doing something that does not match the company and its goals will invalidate every hard work to improve the digital and online presence of the business.
4. How do you handle communication and reporting with clients?
Open communication is crucial in any business. If they do not know how to communicate with clients and customers, it can be challenging to keep good relationships and records. So, if you are looking for a digital marketing agency, one of the questions you need to ask focuses on communication and reporting. Learn about this because it will give you an idea about how they establish transparency and provide regular updates. The agency must give clients detailed reports about the performance of the campaign and then discuss the results and progress.
5. How do you approach budgeting and pricing for digital marketing services?
Every service you will encounter has a price, and it is not any different when it comes to digital marketing. To ensure you are not wasting your time and money, ask this question to them. The budgeting and pricing for the services must be matched with the needs and goals of the client. The budget must also be fair, depending on the work required.
6. What level of involvement do you expect from our team during the campaign execution process?
Even when the job is passed down to the agency, as a company, you should keep your involvement in the overall process. The campaign execution will not be possible without your input and insights, so ask this question to know where you will get involved. A reliable digital marketing agency will not forget about its clients and what they have to say about the project.
7. What sets your agency apart from others in the industry?
Some job interviews ask this question to their applicants, but you can also use this when looking for a digital marketing agency. Knowing they differ from the others can make your decision-making easier. Researching is a good starting point, but asking this question can be the one that changes your entire perspective.
Digital marketing agencies have different approaches that could make them stand out from others. If you want to ensure that you partner with a good one, asking the right questions is necessary. You will get valuable insights about the agency, especially its commitment, approach, and expertise in providing positive results.

My Other Stardew Valley OCs!
Tumblr media
I've had these OCs for a while, but I've finally decided to share them! They exist in a separate universe to Fawn and aren't related to her story at all.
Mel Josephine Matthews
Mel is the oldest of the three. She's the most stoic, responsible, and strong both physically and emotionally. Mel can get into fights with her younger sister Sydney, who is a stark difference to her. She expects Syd to be more responsible than she is and will push her too far sometimes, but she has her heart in the right place. Mel enjoys art of all kinds, but is partial to poetry and painting, something she used to practice in her younger years.
Mel is twenty-eight years old as of the start of her story. She is 180 cm (5'10"). She is friends with Elliott, Maru, Leah, and Shane (though her relationship with Shane started out as enemies). Her main skills are farming and fishing.

Tumblr media
Sydney Locke Matthews
The rambunctious middle sister, Sydney--or Syd, as she prefers to be called--is a firecracker of energy. She's always looking for something to do, and will often throw herself down into the mines in search of adventure. Still, she's not very responsible, having been fired from her only job; a job she struggled to get. And she's a terrible farmer, but she is the most loyal and ready-to-go sister of the bunch.
Syd is twenty-five years old as of the start of her story. She is 157 cm (5'1") tall. She is friends with Sam, Sebastian, Abigail, and Harvey. Her main skills are mining and combat.
Tumblr media
(Made using this portrait creator.)
Tumblr media
Adeline Iniya Matthews
Adeline is the youngest of the three sisters and is not biologically related to them, having been adopted. Her past is shrouded in a sense of mystery, but she doesn't pay it much mind. Adeline is the sweetest of the girls, having also perfected her customer service smile over the years from her work. She's a lover of flowers and bees, spending most of her work on the farm producing bouquets and honey.
Adeline is twenty-two years old as of the start if her story. She is 167 cm (5'5") tall. She is friends with Alex, Haley, Emily, and Penny. Her main skills are farming and foraging.
Tumblr media
(Made using this portrait creator.)
Tumblr media
Main Plot
The girls' story starts with them moving tot he valley. Mel was the one who inherited the farm from her grandfather, but that was because at the time there was only her and Sydney, and her grandfather trusted her more with the property.
At the time of moving, Mel has just quit her job as a customer billing attendant at Joja Corp. Her sister Sydney has been living with her for a few months after being fired from her job at a fast food place and having no way of paying her rent. Mel, who can barely afford to take care of herself, reluctantly decides to take up on her grandfather's offer.
Adeline, however, did not originally plan on joining them. Only after one of her workplaces was caught in a massive fire, leaving her with not enough money to pay off her rent and university/college debt, does she decide to move. She's easily the most annoyed about the move, having been working towards getting a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. Even after moving, she still has to pay off her debt, leaving her even more annoyed.
That's the main gist of the beginning of the story, but I have more planned. At some point Sydney and Adeline get their own small houses on the property to give some distance and privacy between them all. They have the basic farm, but sort of haphazardly split it between them all.

One of the critical aspects of a successful interstate move is choosing the right moving company. In Sydney, where bustling city life meets vast suburban sprawl, selecting reliable interstate movers is paramount to ensuring a smooth transition. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the world of interstate movers in Sydney, offering insights, tips, and considerations to help you navigate this significant undertaking.
Understanding Interstate Moves
Interstate moves involve transporting belongings across state borders, often over long distances. Unlike local moves, which typically require less time and logistical coordination, interstate relocations necessitate meticulous planning and adherence to interstate regulations. From packing and loading to transportation and unpacking, every stage of the moving process demands precision and expertise.
The Role of Interstate Movers
Interstate movers play a crucial role in facilitating seamless relocations. These professional moving companies specialize in navigating the complexities of interstate moves, offering a range of services tailored to meet the unique needs of each client. From providing packing materials and handling fragile items to transporting goods safely and efficiently, interstate movers shoulder the responsibility of ensuring a stress-free relocation experience.
Key Considerations When Choosing Interstate Movers in Sydney
Reputation and Experience
When selecting an interstate moving company in Sydney, reputation and experience are paramount. Conduct thorough research to identify reputable movers with a proven track record of delivering exceptional service. Reading reviews, seeking recommendations from friends or family, and checking industry certifications can help you gauge the reliability and credibility of a moving company.
Services Offered
Different interstate movers offer varying levels of services to accommodate diverse moving needs. Consider your requirements and preferences when evaluating the services offered by prospective moving companies. From full-service packing and unpacking to specialized transportation for delicate items, choose a mover that aligns with your specific needs and budget.
Licensing and Insurance
Verify that the interstate movers you're considering are properly licensed and insured to operate across state lines. Interstate moves are subject to specific regulations and requirements, and working with licensed movers ensures compliance with legal standards. Additionally, comprehensive insurance coverage provides peace of mind knowing that your belongings are protected throughout the relocation process.
Pricing and Estimates
Obtain detailed quotes from multiple interstate movers to compare pricing and estimates. While cost is undoubtedly a factor, prioritize value and reliability over solely opting for the lowest bid. Be wary of any hidden fees or ambiguous pricing structures, and ensure that the quote provided by the moving company accurately reflects the scope of services required for your interstate move.
Customer Support and Communication
Effective communication and responsive customer support are essential elements of a positive moving experience. Choose a moving company that prioritizes clear and transparent communication, promptly addressing any inquiries or concerns you may have. A dedicated customer support team can streamline the relocation process and assist every step of the way.
The Benefits of Hiring Interstate Movers
Expertise and Efficiency
