Customer: are you guys ready yet?? How much longer is this going to be??
Me: we open at 5:30.
Customer: I was told 5am. So open up.
Me: we open at 5:30.
Customer: I was told 5!
Me: 5:30.
(I don't give a damn what you were told or by who, because they are obviously wrong. I work here and know what time we open, I do not work on your schedule. Don't you dare try to tell me what time we open when you are the one with the wrong info.)

How do I explain to people that they can't just park their boat wherever they want just because there's technically space for it?
Our motel has three designated parking spaces for boat trailers, first come first serve. If you plan on bringing a boat with you for your stay, we can assign one to you, and that's where your boat goes. You're not allowed to park it across multiple empty car spaces, you're not allowed to back it right up along next to the building, you have to keep it in your space. I don't care how much physical room we have, there are fire codes and evacuation routes and customer walkways that you're not allowed to obstruct. And if all three designated spaces are already taken, you can't keep your boat with us, full stop. I'm sorry, I didn't make the policy and I can't make exceptions just because you want me to; my boss would have a few things to say about that, and I'd rather keep my job than cut you a break.
"But there's clearly space for more than three trailers, why can't I squeeze mine in?" That's true of every parking lot! If you ignore the lines you can fit way more cars in there, pack em in like sardines, door to door, but the spaces are as big as they are for a reason. I'm not gonna invent more space for you just because you wanted to bring your boat on vacation despite being told not to. We ask every customer if they're bringing a boat, every single one without exception, it's part of the reservation process, a literal actual box I have to tick with a pen, and if they say yes then I have to see how many spaces we have left; if they're all full, I tell them they can't bring theirs. They can either stay somewhere else, or leave their boat in a marina, but I make a note on our end saying that I told them they couldn't bring a boat, so if they do it anyway they can't lie and say I told them it was okay.
Rich people have it in their mind that rules simply don't apply to them, that they can just throw their money at every problem and make it go away, or rather the idea of their money; nine times out of ten they don't actually throw any money at it, they just let us know they have money and expect special treatment because we're supposed to respect or fear that fact. At best they think we'll miss their patronage, "give us what we want, or we'll take our business elsewhere," but at worst they're trying to threaten us, "do you know who I am? Do you know how much power I have? I'm friends with DeSantis, I could shut you down if you don't let me smoke in the non-smoking room!"
You come to my town, you leave your trash in my streets and on my beaches, you roll through my stop signs, you run my red lights, you treat my fellow cashiers at every shop you go into like dirt, fuck you! We don't want your money! Go home! Go darken someone else's doorstep! Whether you stay here or not, I don't see an extra dime, so I'm not gonna dance at your beck and call.

There is little more vindicating than having the bosses eat their words. I offered to pick up a shift, was told in no uncertain terms that the shift is already filled and how dare I offer, only for that person to call out. Then the bosses call me up and beg for me to take the shift I was snapped at for offering to take and telling them 'No'. The smug feeling was so divine I just had to laugh.

Imagine: You're sitting at work, minding your own business. You get a phone call on the work phone. You answer it. You start to give your usual greeting and the person interrupts, going "hang on, I'll call you right back" in a really rude tone and then hangs up on you without another word.
Like, sir, you called me??? But okay I guess??

Hey, PSA: this is a rough time of year for retail and service industry workers. I no joke enlisted to get out of retail. I did permanent damage to myself to get away from that industry, and I would do it again.
So, be patient with them. A lot of them haven't worked in their current roles for very long, and all of them are over worked, underpaid, and under enormous pressure to make this The Most Wonderful Time for all their customers. Don't make things any harder than they have to be.

As someone who works in customer service, it’s fucking abhorrent we’re not allowed to just tell customers refunds or services just aren’t possible sometimes.
like. Like. Sorry, you’re not gonna get what you want 100% of the time!! The more people get used to being denied when it’s okay, the more they’ll stop acting like they’re entitled all the time.

I don't think people are honestly taking into consideration the fact that shitty/overwhelming work conditions DO impact relationships outside of the work environment. I haven't, until more recently, especially pertaining to my own work conditions.
Imagine working and socializing with customers and co-workers for 8+ hours a day, and all the good and shitty things that come with it...to then come home and do more work, and trying to socialize with friends/partners after all that.
Yeah, be for real. Cut yourself some slack. If you're friends with people with this sort of work-life? Cut them some slack (that isn't to excuse poor treatment of others, mind you)
We're just on the fritz as it is. Frazzled, even.

One thing I haven't seen anyone talk about much is how abysmally rude Garak is to his customers. He has the worst customer service ethic I have ever seen in my life. He gets confrontational and argumentative with them. He flings Morn's pants at him. He gets super sarcastic with Quark about his lapels. It really makes me wonder about Cardassian customer service in general. Is Garak typical for a Cardassian in the customer service field? Is he being rude and argumentative because that's how Cardassians flirt and he's trying to put his customers at ease? Or is this a symptom of the fact that he hates the circumstances of his life and kind of wants to punish everyone for his reduced station? Did his years as the second most powerful person in the Cardassian Union make him feel like he deserves better than to be talked down to by a Ferengi bartender? I feel like there's a case to be made for all of these scenarios.
