Robert De Niro in The King of Comedy (Martin Scorsese, 1982)
Cast: Robert De Niro, Jerry Lewis, Sandra Bernhard, Dianne Abbott, Shelley Hack, Margo Winkler, Kim Chan, Frederick De Cordova, Edgar Sherick. Screenplay: Paul D. Zimmerman. Cinematography: Fred Schuler. Production design: Boris Leven. Film editing: Thelma Schoonmaker. Music: Robbie Robertson.
Is there anything scarier than Robert De Niro's smile? It's what makes his bad guys, like Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976) or Max Cady in Cape Fear (Scorsese, 1991), so unnerving, and it's what keeps us on the edge of our seats throughout The King of Comedy. Rupert Pupkin isn't up to anything so murderous as Travis or Max, but who knows what restrains him from becoming like them? As a satire on the nature of celebrity in our times, Paul D. Zimmerman's screenplay doesn't break any new ground. But what keeps the movie from slumping into predictability are the high-wire, live-wire performances of De Niro and Sandra Bernhard as obsessive fans and the marvelously restrained one of Jerry Lewis as late night talk-show host Jerry Langford, the object of their adulation. And, of course, Scorsese's ability to keep us guessing about what we're actually seeing: Is this scene taking place in real life, or is it a product of Rupert's deranged imagination? That extends to the movie's ending, in which Rupert, having kidnapped Langford and engineered a debut on network television, is released from prison and becomes a celebrity himself. Are we to take this as the film's comment on fame, like the phenomenon of Howard Beale in Network (Sidney Lumet, 1976) and any number of people (many of them named Kardashian) who have become famous for mysterious reasons? (Incidentally, the odd thing about Rupert's standup routine is not that it's bad, but that it's exactly the sort of thing that one might have sat through while watching a late night show in 1982.) I prefer to think that we are still in Rupert's head at film's end -- it seems less formulaic that way. I don't know of a movie that stays more unbalanced and itchy from scene to scene.

Thank you so much for tagging me @soundsfaebutokay and @toss-a-coin-to-your-bard!
Fav color: Blue and green!
Currently reading: Always Coming Home by Ursula Le Guin (I'm loving it so far -- it's beautifully written, very interesting, and references a lot of plants I know which makes me happy), and also Uprooted by Naomi Novik (because it's much easier to read when I'm half-asleep lol). As usual, I am also reading lots and lots of fanfiction!
Last song: Inkpot Gods by The Amazing Devil
Last series: Probably Taskmaster! I am also (very slowly) trying to watch Good Omens -- hoping to finally finish it over the holidays!
Last movie: The Verdict, directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Paul Newman! Both the cinematography and acting were beautiful.
Currently working on: Sometimes it Takes a Prison Cell, my AU where Yennefer and Jaskier first meet in a dungeon. It's Yennskier-centric with endgame Geraskefer, just over 30k now, and I hope to maybe start posting it this week! I love it very much and am ridiculously excited to show it to you all :D
I'm also working on several crochet projects that will hopefully become Christmas gifts!
I'll tag @karolincki @elder-flower @dreamofbecoming @wanderlust-t @samstree @seidenbros @finleycannotdraw @endrega23 @wherethewordsare and anyone else who feels like it!

June 25 ZODIAC
Close to home and strict: they are grouchy and variable simultaneously. They can undoubtedly squeeze into varying backgrounds and effectively switch companions. They are solid and extremely influential individuals. Their interests are areas of strength for extremely, their propensities frequently mislead them. They are drawn to the other gender. In the event that you are cautious you will come by a decent outcome. Barely any times in their lives will they fall affected by others. They have solid respect and a great deal of adoration for studies, which would ultimately raise them to a conspicuous scholastic position. They frequently carry on with a desolate existence, and for the most part concentrate abroad. A lady brought into the world on this day is very lovely, with a well disposed, dynamic, fairly hurried outside. In any case, she docilely quiets down. She will have youngsters and will be exceptionally joined to them. Somewhat modest and not fair 100% of the time. She tracks down joy in helping other people and really focusing on the feeble. Individuals conceived today are by and large miserable in their childhood. Nonetheless, everything improves as the years go by: their position settles, they become prosperous, and their state of mind improves decisively. Watch "SERPICO (1973) | 4K Restoration | Official Trailer | Dir. by Sidney Lumet & starring Al Pacino" on YouTube
youtube
And they're trying to blame BG all the time and I'm trying to pin stuff on him constantly just like our son to identifies with it it says the crazy but they're in a position as we are just a little bit better and that's actually pretty good cuz that's what it is similar and you can get out of it but it's very difficult the trouble that they cost and it causes more trouble and that's what they're looking to do so goes up there it is doing serpico and in standalone it's not busting anybody it goes around and he finds these guys d****** with everybody and it's Trump and it's after they're found out and people go after him slowly but they're going after other people it makes a note of it and it says you know about it and they're going after you and you're not doing anything she made a big deal out of it up in New York City and starts tomorrow and they say we want you out of here you keep making trouble so you can make in trouble for me everywhere I go I can't give anything I can't go anywhere with you goofballs all stuck to me and I can't even do anything I can't go to the movies and have a decent time at all without just sitting behind me and threatening me I can't go out to eat just you're sitting there babbling and babbling and babbling just like him and you're f****** stupid there's no real reason for it except you're dumb he said it too I think they're just really stupid people and he said we're trying to get stuff I said you're giving up your stuff you're battling it away people are killing you cuz you can't stand hearing you I want you away from me why don't you leave me alone because you hit us from a far I don't have that kind of s*** and you're nuts. So they start yammering back seeing all this s*** this is look you know I'm going to be somewhere I don't have time for this why don't you go to hell and it takes off so follow him around saying go to hell you sound like idiots you might be stupid and he said that like 20 times and it's not tripping that and he says some stuff and it goes backwards and they said forwards and people are starting to start going after him he knows what about this one you got so much money you don't have to worry about anything he walks around and they start saying it to people and then they go up to and say you got so much money then they say we have it and serpico said where'd you get the money send other people's bank accounts recently when they died in battle there are people we have a right to it he knows you do and that was it a few minutes later there's news on TV that those guys are killed and they were killed very badly and people know who it was it was people who heard them talking about it and they're more people from the neighborhood they're part of those 25 and even though 10 left they're still getting the 25 and they're taking their money so beet juice is the game and after a serpico tomorrow and several other movies it's not getting ground down to the bottom.
I'll mention another movie and it has BG in it it comes after serpico tomorrow and starts tomorrow night partially and it's Scarface and this is a very violent movie there's a whole bunch of people to get hit. And a bunch of them are out of those 25 no they're out of the 50 keep in mind that about ten out of 50 said they aren't coming back. Huge episode issuing regarding the statement and everything about it now there's tons of stuff to do and these people have nothing to do except sit here and rant so they come in and pull them out soon they'll be dead.
No no change on the Eastern hemisphere there's still four or five huge areas of the warlock is five there's four that are 300x200 too that are 100 by 100 and that's what it is well six and a couple more and they're going to go after him most likely but what's happening now is Stan is under attack by Trump the others are stopping him and Max there too and they're going after the idiot and he's sending tons of troops huge numbers and about 600,000 octillion now and right now and people can't figure out why. In about 20 minutes they're going to hit the wall things are going to attack the base and with a lot of firepower
Thor Freya
I hope this doesn't happen but we see them amassing and we're getting ready and we see Max and more luck and they were getting ready to hit them too and these people are idiots okay we spent a long time listening to this crap she's stupid morons
Stan

The Pawnbroker by Sidney Lumet
an inspiration of filmography that can lead others to tel a tale of personal misery and cultural guilt. unraveling throughout the film you discover the main character is reflecting on his life choices and the realization that he feels dispatched from is culture. not only is it a source for a beautiful film but it's cinematography brings a culmination of color, visuals and a musical score that grounds the character and viewer to feel as equals.
Here is a response to a question raised by professor when I watched the movie:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GN64F19RUwGZg8Hmpd8H-0kgsH0ArbU26xmYatRa9SA/edit?usp=sharing

Film: KING: A FILMED RECORD (d. Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Sidney Lumet, 1970, USA)
Forum: Doc Films  Format: 35mm
Observations: Beautiful Library of Congress print of this epic, three-hour presentation of Dr. Martin Luther King's public life from the 1955 Montgomery boycott to 1968 Memphis. It was originally assembled as a one-night-only presentation for USA theaters (also a fundraiser), then shelved for decades. The sequence in Chicago, event that occured a short ride from where we live, showed just how savage the white residents were toward the marchers. Only ten people attended and three eventually walked out.

The romantic cynicism of William Holden, who would have been 103 today.
Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard. D: Billy Wilder (1950). Billy Wilder wrapped the cumulative cynicism of a decades-long career in the film industry around the shoulders of a good-looking second-tier star who wore it like a marked-down cashmere jacket. As a burned-out, working on washed-up screenwriter who lets himself be kept by faded (and insane) silent-film star Nora Desmond (Gloria Swanson), Holden could deliver acid-lines acidly (when Swanson threatens suicide he says “Oh, wake up Norma you’d be killing yourself to and empty house.”) but he leavened the (self) contempt with a sliver of empathy and gave his character just enough compassion to get himself killed (not a spoiler – the movie opens on his narration as they fish his corpse from a swimming pool.)
Pike Bishop in The Wild Bunch. D: Sam Peckinpah (1969). “When you ride with a man you stay with him! And if you can’t do that, you’re like some animal, you’re finished!” was the closest Holden’s Bishop had to a code as the aging leader of a band of outlaws, psychopaths and would-be revolutionaries, robbing their way to their own obsolescence in this great twilight-of-the-west opus. He was moving as a man trying to keep his string going, one job at a time, and who finally decides to make it mean something when it runs out. The way he looks at his crew when they decide how the films climax is gonna go is as indelible as when he says, “If they move, kill ‘em” right before the director’s credit appears.
Max Schumacher in Network. D: Sidney Lumet (1976). Holden aged well and though the lines in his face might have been etched there by alcohol, but he credibly played men who had earned them. In this satire of network TV that prophesied the transformation of hard news to entertainment, he’s saddled with Paddy Chayefsky’s most portentous declamations-disguised-as-dialogue (“You’re television incarnate Diana” he tells the news director he’s having an affair with, “Indifferent to suffering; insensitive to joy. All of life reduced to the common rubble of banality.”) but he brings them a hard-bitten resignation (he might have won Chayefsky the Oscar) that gave gravitas to the angry-at-everything lunacy. Someone should have at least thought of making him an anchor.
