Movies watched in 2023
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017, USA/UK)
Director & Writer: Martin McDonagh
Mini-review:
I liked this much more than The Banshees of Inisherin, but it still left me with mixed feelings. On the one hand, the acting is simply phenomenal and the script has some biting social commentary. The story also packs a few twists that took me by surprise, which I always appreciate. However, some of its dark humor didn't really work. I feel like it was trying to criticize or parody certain types of people, but sometimes it ended up doing the exact same things it seems to criticize. In this regard, the comedic parts of the movie were somewhat confusing. At this point, I'm starting to think that Martin McDonagh's movies are just not my thing. They're obviosly well-made and he can direct the hell out of his actors, but his sense of humor and his choice of dramatic beats are too hit or miss for me.

JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH (1947) Grade: B
The more I soak on this film, the more I like it. The casting is obviously good. The script really was clever, interwinds a lot smoothly.

Fear Street Part One: 1994 (2021)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Fear Street Part One: 1994 has scenes lit by vehicle hazard lights and emergency vehicle lights that usually strobe slower than modern ones do. There are occasional mild flickers of indoor lights, and sudden flashes of images and fast edits of images. The opening credit sequence has some brief, infrequent strobes. Late in the film, there are about 15 seconds of flickering lights while a character dies.
Handheld cameras are frequently used, but shaking of those cameras is rare.
Flashing Lights: 7/10. Motion Sickness: 3/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: Bloody violence, schoolyard bullying, homophobic slurs. There is an on-screen vomiting instance during a scene depicting a drug overdose, and a similar incident as someone wakes up during CPR.
