Cricketsong is a brand new 44-page crime-thriller comic written by Ryan King aka @ryyyan-kiiing (Nico’s Fortune, The Games We Played, ToTully Aces) and Daryl Toh aka @daryltoh & @tohdraws (Outer God, The Misadventures of Tobias and Guy).
Abandoned by his friends at a bar across the Mexico border, the millennial Emile begins to wonder if hitching a ride back home with Barry, a shifty smuggler twice his age, was the right decision. From there the two set forth on a road trip through the Southern California desert and into a world of prosperity, unknown criminal horrors, and the marginally thin divide.
Taking inspiration from such troubling road trip genre-benders like Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s FROM DUSK TIL DAWN, the 80’s horror classic THE HITCHER, and hedonistic road narratives, like On the Road, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, and Into the Wild, CRICKETSONG promises to deliver a new take on horror crime thrillers. The release of CRICKETSONG marks the third horror comic collaboration from King and Toh; their previous two comics (the queer friendly horror title NICO’S FORTUNE and the suburban ghost story THE GAMES WE PLAYED) were both successfully funded via Kickstarter and released in the Fall of 2017.

(I thoroughly enjoyed their two previous collaborations, “Nico’s Fortune” and “The games we played”, so I really wish them good luck on this one. If you like horror comics, this should be right up your alley.)

I don't know if anyone's ever asked you about this, but where does your creativity/inspiration stem from? I've never read work that evokes such an uneasy feeling quite like yours does 👀 .
Well, a lot of my imagery comes from art rather than things I’ve read, so artists like Wayne Barlowe, Michael Whelan, and probably Francisco Goya cover where I come from with horror, plus a hell of a lot of talented independent artists which I’ll link to in a sec.
Honestly, I don’t read a lot of horror (except lovecraft sometimes), so the horror I consume comes from either video games, movies, or art, so a lot of stuff from Guillermo Del Toro, I love the weirdness that Hideo Kojima has started, and stuff in their wheelhouse. I like to keep my books somewhat lighthearted bc I haven’t found the right kind of horror novel yet. I think its important to not just stick to one genre bc that can stunt creativity. If you watch Pride and Prejudice, play Silent Hill, and also listen to mbmbam, you can come up with some really fun stuff bc you’re getting inspiration from all these completely different sources and using what you like best about them.
Podcasts are also a huge wonderful inspiration to me and where I get a lot of the uneasy vibes I have in writing. Obviously The Magnus Archives, Welcome to Nightvale, The Chilluminati Podcast, Lore, listening to Coast to Coast am really does a number on you. Plus everything I’ve learned at school, a lot of folklore, 18th and 19th century literature, gothic literature, and so on will do a number on your creativity! Sorry to make this long, but there are so many things that I am inspired by, from nature documentaries to old japanese folk horror movies, that i try to put it all into my writing so that everything I create is new and exciting!
Also here are only some of the blogs I am also inspired by, go check them out:

See you at TCAF?!
I'm headed out the door to catch my flight to Toronto for TCAF (the Toronto Comic Arts Festival)! Will I see you there???
Tumblr media
Catch me at the festival at Table 231 on the Second Floor. I'll be there promoting Cricketsong's Kickstarter and selling a lot of new books (plus a BIG surprise!). Here's a gander of what I'll have in hand:

Also, if you haven't heard the news, Cricketsong is now a featured "Project We Love" on Kickstarter! Thank you so much for your endless support - we're currently 12% towards our goal which is fantastic. Buuuut please keep spreading the word; we still have a long ways to go and need all of the help we can get! Tell your friends, tell your family, and let's try to create some buzzzzzzzz.

See you soon,
Ryan <333
