Sketches
Date:unknown
Saw that stern women
Run to that older couple
And hug
Was asked for money
And the dog was shaking
So many sketches of life
Which normally pass me by
But today I look for you
And am much more open

The Rise of a Hakisaki Master|01|
This is chronicling the journey of a particular Hunter and the Guardians she has met along the way.
______________
It started with a singular Exo, in the mountains of Old Carolina.
[Guardian? Eyes up Guardian.] chirped an unfamiliar voice. [You don’t know how long I’ve been looking for you]
As the Exo looked up she saw a small floating robot. “Who.. What are you?” she said her synapses warming up.
“Check:Time-log” the Exo’s inner voice said <Date:Unknown> her systems responded
[...Actually now I’m your Ghost. I was born of the Traveler’s Light to find warriors amongst the long dead to protect humanity]
“Long dead? How long have I been dead? What is the date? What am I wearing?”
[I know you have a lot of questions. You’re going to see a lot of things that you don’t understand. We should get moving. We are a long way from the City]
The Exo stood and started walking. “Where is this City?” the Exo asked curiously as she strided down the cliff
[A ways from here] the Ghost responded vaguely
The rest of the walk down the mountain was uneventful. The Exo tried to look back into her memories to find out more of her situation but most of the data was corrupted. All she managed to gather was her name ‘Zanzi-1’. Zanzi was puzzled by the situation, dying and being brought back to life with no memory of who she was.
_____
[Guardian? What are you doing?] the Ghost said with a worried tone in her voice
The Exo ignored the Ghost and continued scaling the tree to try to get a view of her surroundings. They’d been traveling through the forest for hours now and the Exo was tired of wandering around aimlessly.
“I’m tired of wandering around aimlessly” Zanzi yelled to her Ghost “I want to know where we-“ The Exo was cut short by what seemed like a bolt of lightning striking the tree in front of her.
[Fallen! Run!] the Ghost frantically said as she transmatted away [Im still with you. We have to get out of here get to a clearing and I can signal help]
“Two voices in my head. Great” Zanzi said as she jumped down the branches until she reached the ground, then she ran.
Zanzi sprinted full speed away from the unknown enemy into a field, on the other side she saw an abandoned town about a half-mile away and heard the faint sound of gunshots
“Should we go towards the shooting or away from it?” the Exo said as she came to a stop.
The Ghost materialized [I met those Guardians on the way to find you. They are scouting this area. They can get you back to the City]
_____
The Exo started a light jog towards the town. The sun was about to set so Zanzi decided to speed up her jog, she arrived to the town as the sun set. As the Exo rounded the corner she saw the flickering light of a fire inside one of the buildings. Zanzi found the door to the building and joined the three figures sitting around the fire, a human male, a blue skinned woman and a female Exo
“All I am saying is that you could use a little more trigger discipline when we are in a firefight” the blue skinned woman growled
“Lay off it twinkle pants. We are immortal. If I shoot you who cares? You’ll come right back” replied the human
“Oh screw you!” roared the blue-skinned woman as she stood with purple energies swirling around her hands. “Why in Traveler’s Light did I get assigned to a fire team with a damn Hunter! You have no respect for anything or anyone! It is time someone taught you!”
“Hmph.” The human rolled his eyes “Don’t get your dress in a bunch twinkle pants. I’d hate to have to hurt a ya. I already kicked your ass in the Crucible so sit down Warlock”
The other Warlock chimed in without looking up from her book “You guys should calm down. There’s a new Guardian here. Don’t set a bad example”
“But-“ started the blue skinned woman
“No. Don’t even.” the Exo said as she put her book down and looked at Zanzi “Hey Guardian. What’s your name? Have you picked one yet?”
“My name was- Is Zanzi-1”
“Exo huh. That’s neat” the Warlock smiled as best an exo could “I’m Trinity-4. I’m the leader of this ‘fireteam’ these are my friends”
The Exo stood “The Hunter over there, that’s Troy”
“Yo.” Troy answered with a smile
“And the short-tempered Warlock over there is Treisha.”
“I do not have a short temper, I-“ Treisha fell silent as Trinity raised her hand
“Trei take a walk and clear your head.”
“But-”
“Go.” the Exo replied sternly
As Treisha stormed out of the building Trinity looked at the Hunter “Try not to be rude to Treisha. She is part of this team now so you need to respect her”
“Whatever you say” the Hunter said as he rolled up in his cloak and minutes later he was fast asleep
“So” Trinity said as she focused on Zanzi “Let’s take a walk. You have a lot to learn about being a Guardian”
As the two Exos walked around the ruined town the Warlock explained all that a new Guardian needed to know about the world along with a few tips specifically for Exos. The pair, being Exos didn’t require much rest so they kept watch throughout the uneventful night.
_____
As the sun rose Trinity went to wake the Warlock and task her with taking Zanzi to the City.
“Treisha. I’m tasking you with giving the new Guardian a ride to the City, then I want you back here by sun down. Got it?”
“Yes ma’am” Treisha answered as she started making her way towards the door
The Exo grabbed her arm before she could pass “Don’t let Troy get to you. Remember what we were taught”
“Yes ma’am. I will not let my emotions get the best of me” Treisha smiled as she left the building.
Zanzi sat cross legged atop a ruined car in front of the building the fireteam set up camp in.
“Find anything interesting?” Zanzi said as her Ghost continued to scan her as she’d done a dozen times at this point
[Just making sure your vitals are good]
“Checking for the twentieth time this hour?” Zanzi chuckled “Do you have a name or anything I can refer to you as?”
The Ghost zipped closer to her Guardian’s face [I don’t have a name. You can give me one if you’d like]
“I’ll think of something”
Treisha approached the Guardian “Zanzi, I have been tasked with taking to the City. Can you ask your Ghost to link with my ship for transmat. I would like to leave immediately”
“Ghost can you do what the blue lady just said?”
[Yes I can. One moment please] Zanzi’s Ghost did a twirl [Linked] she chirped then there was a flash and Zanzi was aboard the Warlock’s ship.
Zanzi sat quietly as the Warlock piloted the ship. She had tried running diagnostics on herself several times. Each time she learned nothing.
“Here we are” Treisha said with very little enthusiasm as the Tower came into view “First things first, go see the Vanguard. They’ll set you on the right path”
With that Zanzi said her goodbyes to the Warlock and transmatted out of the ship into the tower and into a brand new world.

Activism Through Art
By Eva
Francisco Goya
Tumblr media
[Image Depiction: Self Portrait of Goya, 1826]
Francisco Goya was a 18th century Spanish painter who criticized the Spanish government, war and imperialism through his art. Throughout his lifetime he worked independently and in the 1770’s began to work for the royal court and under Napoleon during the French invasion of Spain in 1808. He did not let fear of government criticism stop him from making his provocative art. He remained an activist for the people of Spain and made himself vulnerable in order to spread the truth about Spain and France.
Types Of Art
Canvas Paintings: Goya has a vast collection of oil paintings of various styles. Different styles of his canvas work include romantic art, focuses on lighting and contrast, all black paintings, graphic and violent art pieces.
Sketches: These sketches were not as detailed as his canvas paintings. Goya used these to protest politically and to create art that was filled with thought. Considering these took less time to make there are many sketchings and etches.
Examples of Romantic Style Canvas Paintings
The Holy Family With the Infant Saint Joseph
Tumblr media
[Image description: The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist,1775 - 1780, Goya]
This image is an example of a more romantic style with an emphasis with light and shadows. The infant and mother are engulfed in light remarking on their purity and innocence. Goya used the concentration of light in order to highlight the meanings of his paintings
La Maja Desnuda (The Naked Maiden)
Tumblr media
[Image description: La Maja Desnuda, 1795-1800. Images has soft colors and gentle features are beautifully illustrated.]
Examples of ‘Dark Pieces’ on Canvas
Saturn Devouring His Son
Tumblr media
(Image description: Saturn Devouring his Son, 1820-1823)
This piece shows the Roman god Saturn devouring his own son and is an example of graphic style and uses darkness in order to create a violent image. A closer read on the story of Saturn and an analysis can be found here. This can be interpreted as the Spanish government eating its own people in order to stay in power, just as Saturn did.
Two Old Men
Tumblr media
[Image Description: Two Old Men , 1820-1823]
Another example of a “dark piece” is this image of Two old Men. This could be interpreted as the devil whispering into the government leader’s ears or simply how the devil finds ways to whisper into everyone’s ears.  Interesting fact: Goya painted this on the wall of his home.
Example of a Political Sketch
El Sueño de la Razón produce Monstruos (Dreams of Reason produce monsters)
Tumblr media
[Image description: Goya, Date:Unknown, El Sueño de la Razón produce Monstruos]
This is a pencil and paper sketch showing a man sleeping and dreaming, while owls and other monsters perch on his shoulders and get ready for attack. A man simply dreaming for reason and independence then gets attacked by monsters shows the corruption and violence of the Spanish government. Goya had to be careful about directly saying his beliefs that critiqued the Spanish government because that could have put him in danger.  So, he had to discreetly be a political activist.
Goya’s Activism
The 3rd of May 1808 in Madrid or “The Executions”1814
Tumblr media
[Image Depiction: The 3rd Of May, 1808, Goya]
The 3rd of May Analysis
This piece is one of Goya’s most famous works because it shows a direct account of the French violence inflicted on the Spanish. This was during the time of the invasion of Napoleon and the French troops were cruel as Goya demonstrates in his art.
Goya wanted to portray the French as evil by cloaking them in darkness and shooting an unarmed man that is the focus of the painting. The man getting executed dressed in white represents the innocence of the Spanish people who were brutally murdered by the French. The use of light creates a contrast and tension for the audience to look upon. The Spanish are cowering in the corner in the darkness as their companion gets executed, this man stands in the center frame engulfed in light, illustrating his innocence and the brutality of his execution.
The 2nd of May 1808 in Madrid or “The Fight against the Mamelukes”1814
Tumblr media
[Image Depiction: The 2nd of May 1808, Goya]
The 2nd of May Analysis
This painting shows the Spanish and Turkish soldiers who were on the French’s side killing each other in the battle for independence. This graphic image shows these men getting killed in detail.
Goya painted so graphically so the viewers of his art would clearly see all of the violence that was caused by the French. He wanted to show that the Spanish have endured pain and cruelty throughout the war. Once again Goya toys with light and the focus of the painting is the man being stabbed on the white horse. As the focus shows the Spanish man killing the Turkish man, he seeks to demonstrate Spain’s strength and the violence of this time.
Big Takeaway
Looking at Goya’s art throughout his lifetime there is an obvious shift. He begins with art that is soft and gentle in a romantic style. These include family portraits and still lives. As he ages and sees wars that Spain endures, his art becomes violent, dark and graphic. He paints demons, murder, and violence. He isolated himself in his home and began to make his “black paintings” that were gruesome and frightening
Goya then became an activist for the people of Spain after he saw the French violence and Spanish government’s greed. He was not afraid to critique the corruption and violence that constantly abused the Spanish citizens.

Me Time
Date:Unknown
I don't want to be
Ashamed for a need
To be alone a moment
But we always learn
That we need to keep
Loved ones as near as can
I need to be alone sometimes
Which is not lonely or ungrateful
And you even get that
