The discovery of a particular subgroup of antibodies may open the door to more effective dengue therapeutics and the development of a universal dengue vaccine. Dengue fever is a viral infection with a devastating twist: those who have caught it once are more likely to develop life-threatening disease the second time around. Why our bodies not only fail to learn from prior infection but also become more vulnerable as a result is a longstanding mystery that has prevented development of a universal dengue vaccine. Rather than protecting against disease, such a dengue vaccine could instead serve as a first exposure to prime the body for it. The new antibodies are those responsible for dengue’s increased deadliness upon second exposure. “We definitively proved that it’s not the presence of dengue antibodies that are a problem, but the quality of those antibodies,” says Stylianos Bournazos, a research associate professor in the laboratory of Jeffrey Ravetch, a professor at Rockefeller University. “Now that we know the pathway that these antibodies use, we can develop therapeutics against it.”

Dengue fever
Dengue, also known as ‘tropical flu’, is an infectious disease caused by the virus of the same name. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes. The incidence of dengue is rising rapidly and it is currently considered a ‘re-emerging’ disease. Between 2000 and 2019, the number of cases reported worldwide rose from 500,000 to 5.2 million. Although initially present in tropical and…

WAD MADANI - Outbreaks of cholera and dengue fever in war-torn Sudan have left more than 100 people dead since August, the health ministry said on Saturday.
A total of 1,049 cases of cholera, 73 of them fatal, were recorded in Khartoum, Al-Jazira state to its south and Gedaref state to the its west, the ministry said.
Khartoum has been one of the main battlegrounds in the fighting between rival generals that has gripped the country since April.
Hundreds of thousands of residents of greater Khartoum have fled to calmer areas of Gedaref and Al-Jazira, overwhelming the supply of clean water.
Nine Sudanese states have recorded cases of mosquito-bourne dengue, with 49 deaths from a total of 3,316 cases, the ministry said.
Gedaref state, which borders Ethiopia, reported 2,152 of the cases and 33 of the deaths.
Even before the fighting broke out in April, Sudan’s healthcare system struggled to contain the disease outbreaks that accompany the country’s rainy season which begins in June.
Now – with hospitals bombed, medicines running low and many doctors fleeing the country – the healthcare system has been pushed to the brink.
The health ministry report said 70 per cent of hospitals in war-torn areas are out of service.

ooh Yarrow what was the 70's Cambodian song you found on radioooo? 👀
Okay so i uh
The wasn't on radioooo, it was just something that showed up on Spotify for me a few years back. Also turns out I misremembered entirely, it's not from the 70s, it's from 2005. 🤦 And when I looked up the band to double check, it turns out they're from California. 🤦🤦 But! In my defense they're singing in Khmer and are really influenced by a lot of pre-Khmer Rouge Cambodian rock!
Anyways the song was Sni Bong by Dengue Fever and I still think it's pretty cool lol

Think I caught the Flu, others like to call it Covid, but, call it what you like. Been down for about 3.6 days. Mainly body aches, headache and, blowing my nose 5 times an hour! Went without coffee for 3 days! So, I’m welcoming myself back into the fold!

Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes cause hundreds of thousands of deaths annually. With malaria causing more than 600,000 fatalities a year, it is the most famous. But around 4 billion individuals live in regions with a high risk of dengue fever infections, which cause about 40,000 deaths every year. And individuals in at least 86 countries have been infected with the Zika virus. Cases are rarely fatal, but they have been associated with serious birth defects. Scientists studying such diseases are now investigating whether viruses could tweak human physiology to their benefit, and if so, how they do it.
That quest led Gong Cheng, a microbiologist at the Tsinghua University-Peking University Joint Center for Life Sciences, to test whether humans infected with dengue fever and Zika virus are more attractive to mosquitos. Their new study published today in Cell reveals that mosquitoes become more attracted to hosts that are infected with both flaviviruses, diseases in the same family as West Nile and yellow fever. Their results show that a chemical produced by bacteria in the skin is responsible for this increased allure to the insects. Cheng writes in an email that his team’s findings could “inform real-world public health strategies for controlling mosquito-borne flaviviral viral diseases such as dengue and Zika.”
