Fossil Novembirb 5: It's Getting Hot In Here
Tumblr media
Sandcoleus by @drawingwithdinosaurs
Global warming is nothing new for the planet, and even in the Cenozoic we've had our share of rapid warming events - the most notable one being the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). This event, taking place 56 million years ago, was the result of rapid carbon release from the North Atlantic Igneous Province - aka, a volcano exploded, released a bunch of greenhouse gases, and suddenly global temperatures jumped somewhere between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius (depending on location) in a very short period of time - sound familiar?
Given the obvious parallels to the current day, this event has been studied extensively, though only in a few spheres. We know that plants changed dramatically, with broad leafed plants spreading around the world and turning it into a global tropical forest, even at the polls - leading to interesting adaptations towards the strange light cycles at high latitudes. The world was wetter, and greener, and the change lead to the evolution of new herbivory methods in insects. Mammals got smaller, spread everywhere, and diversified. A mass extinction occurred in the oceans, with microorganisms seeing a larger drop in diversity than during the end-Cretaceous extinction. More calcified algae flourished in the more acidic waters.
But what happened to birds?
Tumblr media
Anachronornis by @otussketching
Turns out, we're not quite sure. Bird fossils before the event are rare, and after are so diverged and varied that it's difficult to know what happened because of the event, and what happened before and just didn't fossilize. Luckily, scientists (... me) are on the case! And there were a few ecosystems that straddle the time around the event, such as the one for this post: the Willwood Formation.
This ecosystem in Wyoming takes place over the late Paleocene through the early Eocene, covering the entire PETM period. And while it showcases many different aspects of this transition, we're of course here for the birds! Not only was there Gastornis, because it was a ubiquitous presence in the Northern Hemisphere following the PETM, there were also many other weird early kinds of birds, all across the avian family tree.
Tumblr media
Paracathartes by @drawingwithdinosaurs
Sandcoleus is one of the more notable tree birds from this ecosystem, being a relative of living mousebirds but in North America (rather than Africa, where they are found today). In fact, lots of different tree birds were present, indicating that the current dominance of Passeriformes - so called "perching birds" - was not always the case. In fact, Paracathartes was also present - our first Palaeognath, an early Lithornithid! - and it also may have been able to perch in the trees, and certainly seems to have been a decent flier.
There were also Geranoidids like Palaeophasianus and Paragrus, which were once thought of as pheasant-like and crane-like respectively, but may now actually be Palaeognaths - and some of the earliest known flightless ones to boot! That said, said, other than being long legged flightless birds, we know little about their ecologies - they may have been herbivorous, and as tropical forest dwellers, could have had similar lifestyles to the living cassowary.
Tumblr media
Primoptynx by @otussketching
And, of course, there was also Anachronornis, the half-screamer-half-duck thing, showcasing how waterfowl were experimenting with a variety of different niches during this ecological explosion. And the large variety of new small mammals didn't go unnoticed either - while other early owls are known from Europe, Primoptynx was both the oldest and the biggest, probably thanks to all the new small mammals to eat! There were also possible ground raptors, similar to Bathornis, though they have not been named.
While there are many questions left to answer, it is clear that the PETM had a major effect like it did on everything else on the planet during that time - and the tropical ecologies that they evolved in during the early Eocene would have many implications, especially for where different clades live today!

Painting a picture of the history of Filipino Tattoos
Tumblr media
A photo of tattooed Filipino men posted on BBC and accredited to Joe Ash
Tattoos are often seen as integral cultural symbols in my different societies whether it be seen as something honorable or dishonorable. Even in the most straight-laced cultures, a tattoo acts as a mark of some form of the person's history and their standing in their communities as well as how people perceive them.
In a lot of modern cultures, the tattoo often have negative connotations, often associated with delinquency or criminal activity. Historically, however, they may have grander and more honorable significance in different societies. The communities that had existed in the Philippines prior to contact with Spain fits this similar pattern.
Before I start
As usual, the Philippines is a diverse country that has different traditions and histories that come from different ethnic groups and states, only being first unified under a government by colonization. Because of this, this post will only be able to cover parts of this culture and may not be able to fully encompass all Filipino traditions, practices, and beliefs about tattoos.
This is also given the fact that more specific information may be harder to come across or may not exist at all in a space I could easily access.
That being said, the general term for Filipino traditional (both precolonial and current) tattoo practices is batok, batik, patik, or patek depending on language or culture. It is also known as buri or burik in several other groups and languages. This word, however, isn't often used for typical tattooing in most modern communities.
The History
From a general understanding of a lot of precolonial Southeast Asian cultures, it can be assumed that precolonial Filipino societies heavily valued tattoos as their neighboring maritime SEAsian countries also had prior to the introduction of Abrahamic religions to the region which often discouraged or even forbade tattooing the skin.
Although this can be assumed, there were no known precolonial description nor record of these tattoos during the actual time period before Spanish contact. There is evidence found in some burial sites however, as discussed by social anthropologist Salvador-Amores in her paper The Recontextualization of Burik (Traditional Tattoos) of Kabayan Mummies in Benguet to Contemporary Practice (2012). In the paper, she focuses a section on the history of burik by explaining the Kabayan Mummies or the Fire Mummies of Benguet, Mountain Province.
Tumblr media
An image of one of the Kabayan Mummies uploaded by Dario Piombino-Miscali on ResearchGate.net
These remains had been dated back to the 13th century and are associated with the Ibaloi, an indigenous ethnic group from Mountain Province found in the northern parts of the island of Luzon. This does confirm that tattooing had been important to the people who had lived in this area during this time period as, in Salvador-Amores's paper, it can be noted that the tattooed mummies seem to be prominent with the adults.
I do have to note that the Ibaloi people, who are part of the larger Igorot ethnic group, were not fully colonized by the Spaniards and therefore does not share the similar Hispanic culture and history that a lot of Filipino groups have. They had only fully been integrated into the Philippines during the American colonial period where they and the other Igorots had been properly colonized by American and placed under the rule of the American-controlled Filipino government. (x)
Regardless, this does show that at least some cultures in the archipelago held tattoos with high importance and did not consider them as something negative compared to the modern perception of tattoos.
The first known illustration of tattooed Filipinos, however, was first seen in the Boxer Codex (circa 1590) during the early Spanish colonial period, written and illustrated by an unknown author.
Tumblr media
A page from the Boxer Codex (circa 1590), author uknown
This illustration seems to be that of the specific ethnolinguistic group, the Visayans as this page is next to another one labeled as "Biſſaya", a likely earlier spelling of Bisaya that uses the long s (ſ). This aligns with the description given as early as Antonio Pigaffatta, Ferdinand Magellan's chronicler, who consistently describes the Visayans that he has met as painted in his account of their arrival in the islands back in 1521.
The book The Philippine Islands 1493-1898 Vol. XII has compiled different first-hand and second-hand sources about the Philippines during the 15th through 19th century, with Vol. XII focusing on the early 17th century which aligns closely to the Boxer Codex. Within the text, there are several mentions of the "Pintados" or the Painted ones, even having an entire province be called the "province of Pintados".
It isn't made clear who the Pintados are besides the fact that they seem to be hostile towards the Spanish colonizers and had often fought battles with one of the letters even claiming that they had poisoned one of the Spaniards. It isn't until we reach the last part of the compilation which features Pedro Chirino's Relacion de las Yslas Filipinas which I had a hard time finding before but had now found a free and accessible copy. Within Chirino's writing, he explains that the Pintados seem to be a name given by the Spaniards to the Bisayans and further explains it as such:
"The people of the Bisayas are called the Pintados, because they are actually adorned with pictures --not because this is natural to them, although they are well built, of pleasing countenance, and white; but because they adorn their bodies with figures from head to foot, when they are young and have sufficient strength and energy to suffer the torment of the tattooing; and formerly they tattooed themselves when they had performed some act of valor."
Chirino even gives an explanation as to how precolonial Visayans tattooed their skin:
They tattoo themselves by pricking the skin until the blood comes, with sharp, delicate points, according to designs and lines which are first drawn by those who practice this art; and upon this freshly-bleeding surface they apply a black powder, which is never effaced. They do not tattoo the body all at the same time, but by degrees, so that the process often lasts a long time; in ancient times, for each part which was to be tattooed the person must perform some new act of bravery or valiant deed
It is notable, however, that not only did the Spanish not mention any tattoos on other Filipino groups such as the Tagalogs, but a lot of the illustrations in the Boxer Codex do not sport any tattoos at all which makes it confusing as to when had tattoos faded out of cultural significance in these other communities, likely even before Spanish contact.
Lane Wilcken, a researcher who studies the history of tattoos from the Philippines and the Pacific Islands, writes in his book Filipino Tattoos: Ancient to Modern (2010) that it may be possible that the Tagalogs may had lost their tattooing traditions shortly before Spanish contact during the recent islamization of their communities circa 1500 which was and specifically in the polity of Maynila. This may also be the case for the Moros which is a muslim ethnolinguistic group found in the island of Mindanao.
Either way. tattoos became more scarce within Filipino records after the arrival of the Spanish and the introduction of Christianity to the islands, save for some indigenous groups that were not fully colonized by Span like previously mentioned Igorot people.
Because of the spread and dominance of Christian and Islamic customs throughout the country, Batok, as it originally was, was lost to time with the lack of existing artists and cultural relevance tattoos. Tattoos didn't come back to the Filipino mainstream until modern tattoos became more prevalent especially in the mid to late 20th century, similar to its rise in popularity in Western cultures, and even then, it wasn't really what I would consider any traditional and is often negative.
Present Day
Like a lot of other countries, however, tattoos had seen a swing of opinion and is more accepted now as an art form rather than a sign of criminal activity but some stereotypes are still popular.
For instance, during the COVID-19 lockdown, the Department of Education provided modules for students to answer at home which would be then collected by the school from door to door. In one of these modules, Lea Salonga, a Filipino singer, complained on November 17, 2020 on her Facebook page of a discriminatory question that was found in one of the modules, pictured below
Tumblr media
EN Translation:
White text: The answer is letter A based on the DepEd answer key. Module text: 3. Tattoos are a symbol of _____ A. being a criminal B. being a slave C. courage and beauty D. having a low standing in society
This controversy caused an uproar online and showed that there are a lot of Filipinos today that don't see a problem with tattoos and even see them as a positive. Two days after the image was posted on Salonga's page, the Department of Education publicly recognized the misstep and had issued that they officially recognized the controversial answer as an error.
It is important for me to note that, just like in a lot of countries, tattoos are typically not accepted in the corporate world and those who have them either have to get them removed or at least cover them up if they get hired at all. There's still a common idea that people with tattoos, if not dangerous, may be seen as unprofessional or even unclean which I do know is a similar thing that other countries may have as well.
As for batok, its comeback in the larger Filipino mainstream didn't return until some time in the late 2000s and 2010s when more international influence had resparked and interest in more ethnic cultures including the precolonial Filipino tattoos specifically because of the internet and the rise of social media. The current batok that we see outside of indigenous communities could be seen as a recreation of the extinct practices within the Philippines with some level of appropriation from related cultures (by appropriation, I mean this in a neutral way not a negative one).
It is argued whether or not the reconstructed practice could be considered traditional at all, but considering its heavy emphasis on the older designs found in historical illustrations as well as designs from indigenous communities that did not have practice eradicated by colonization, some also argue that the modern tattoos that has gained prominence because of modern technology and research is still valuable in a socio-anthropological sense.
As Salvado-Amore puts it
the successive phases and changes in the status of burik tattoos—enabled by the advent of modern technology, the Internet, and mass media—encourage an interaction between contemporary and historical influences rather than an extinction of past practice.
About Apo Whang-Od
Tumblr media
A magazine cover of Vogue featuring Whang-Od, a traditional tattoo artist from the Butbut people, a subgroup within the Kalinga ethnic group. (The rest of this section pulls from the same article by Vogue)
Any research about Filipino tattoos, especially in the modern day would be incomplete without any mention of Whang-Od, the most popular traditional tattoo artist from the Philippines.
Apo Whang-Od (b. February 17, 1917, a.k.a. Maria Oggay) is a member of the Butbut people of the Kalinga indigenous ethnic group from Kalinga province, Philippines. She is often known as one of the last mambabatok in the country which earned her fame and recognition internationally. She started her tattooing practice since she was a teenager at age 16, under the mentorship of her father and was the only known female mambabatok during her time.
For years, she was called on by different communities within her locale in order to tattoo important and symbolic tattoos on members of her and different communities after they had received certain milestones. Men were tattooed for different reasons than women as men were given their marks when they succeed in activities like headhunting, which was ritualistically important for the Butbut people while women were tattooed for reasons like fertility or beauty.
Because of American colonization, however, headhunting was prohibited so she was mostly tattooing women from then onward.
She started gaining recognition some time in the mid-2000s to the 2010s after she started serving foreign tourists, although she doesn't give them the more traditional symbols. Non-members of the group are given a set of tattoos that she could tattoo on anyone without any strong connection to the original meaning of the art.
Since tattooing was passed through family and Whang-Od herself didn't had any children, she was known as the last mambabatok for a time which caused concern for the extinction of the practice as she was already in her 90s when she gained notoriety, but she has since started training her grandniece Grace Palicas and later on her other grandniece Elyang Wigan and the two, who are now in their 20s, has since helped their great aunt dealing with their clientele.
Due to her fame, she is often the subject of foreign media and interest, even being invited by Vogue magazine to pose for one of their covers (pictured above) and is now known as the oldest Vogue cover model earlier this year at the age of 106.
Despite her fame and arguably cultural importance to not only the Kalinga people but the Philippines as well as online petitions since the 2010s to give her the recognition, she is not eligible to receive the National Artist award— one of the highest awards given to artists of most artistic fields of which only 81 people had received. Victorino Manalo, Chairman of the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) explains that this is because her craft, tattooing, isn't covered by the NCCA but by the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMBA, en. Award for Crafters/Creatives of the Nation) but there has been some discussion within the commission about this issue which still ended with her being denied. In light of this, she is now currently on the running to possibly receive the GAMBA award.
She has an online presence managed by others and she can be found via Facebook and Instagram.
Tattoos now, from my experience
As I had said before, tattoos these days are not as negatively seen as they were in the 20th century and had received a more positive reputation thanks to the rise of its social experience due to the internet and social media's prevalence in the country. As an art student, in fact, it's wasn't that surprising when I learned that one of my classmates had a tattoo and it was even a full sleeve! Now, as least three had tattoos before they graduated with one of them actually being a close friend of mine who's planning to get more despite their parents' disapproval.
Despite this, I still do have people in my life right now that see tattoos as undesirable and unclean, with stereotypes still being prevalent. I had once heard people speak of them in such a negative way but then make an exception for the artsy type of people? It's odd.
As for batok or batik, I had not seen a lot of people with these tattoos in my own life and had only seen it through articles and images circulated around by other people who I don't even know. I guess it makes sense as most people who do get tattoos similar to batok or batik often do it in tourist-y places or are foreigners who want to get a piece of Filipino culture on their way out of the country.
Besides more culture-focused people, batik or batok isn't as prevalent as some of these articles might make it seem and most typical Filipinos who don't come from these cultures are more likely to either not have tattoos at all or have similar tattoos to those that you may see in other countries.
Either way, tattoos could be so personal to a person and whether it's something as deeply-rooted to culture like batik or if it's just the names of your favorite K-Pop idol, that tattoo is important and has special meaning. Get whatever tattoo that you want or don't if you don't want any at all!

A Point of No Return
"A lesson without pain is meaningless. For you cannot gain something without sacrificing something else in return."
2022 the start of my life as a senior high school student, It was for me of big importance to deliver something this year, to prove that I can be capable of independence. Having been moved from my province, to yet coming back here to the city of Manila. It was a nervous time for me knowing no one in my school. It was hard...
Having been coming from a school known for its bright learners, I was dismayed to have found out I was not an honor student. During this time I wasn't in a clear path, I sacrificed my growth in education for things that will help me be happy... but only for a short period of time. It helped me realize the actions I take during this time will have an effect later on in my life. As I ponder about what step I should take next I kindled relationships with the people around me may it be my classmates, teachers, or even people I meet elsewhere. During this time I was a bit happier and eager to study. "Well life is hard, I hate to break it to you" was what I said to myself as many hurdles in my life took action a bit after I thought things were going well, such as losing an important person in my life... My uncle, he didn't really have a cool job or neither was he rich, but he was the reason I like many things that I like today. Such as my love for playing video games, watching animated shows and films, reading manga and comics. So having to lose him and on top of many other things at school, I was not giving the energy that I want in my education.
Here comes the 12th grade, having been moved on from many things I said to myself I will do whatever it takes to at least be an honor in my class. One experience that was quite helpful is the student teaching program that was held during teachers day. I persuaded my Philosophy teacher Mr. Beleno to choose me for this task, luckily he did. I was accepting responsibilities within my own conscience hoping to build some character, and I think it did. At the very start of our first meeting with sir beleno during our Intro to the Human Philosophy he pointed out that what many people lack isn't intelligence... It was Values. For me it was quite obvious but at the same time I reflected, what do I value? From the past I depended on others for I was scared to be on my own, I rarely trusted my own intuition even to this day I still contemplate about my decisions in life and how things would have turned out if I did things differently. Although what changed is my perception of failure, I don't need to focus on achieving high numbers, rather I need to enjoy and truly take something out of this experience in school.
My perspectives in life are broadened, seeing what life has to offer... Losing isn't the end, it is only the beginning. I am happy to say that in my first semester during midterms I got somewhat of a decent grade, but more than that I got to grow as a person. From someone who was in doubt... To someone who isn't afraid of failure I think that is a big change in itself. So what I can really take away from this is... Don't be afraid because you are still young and filled with endless possibilities what is waiting for you is only growth as a person.

What year is it in your Remnant?
Easiest answer: Depends on where you are.
The year of Remnant for the four kingdoms were agreed on to be the year it was in Vale, where the four kingdoms came to stop the Colour War. So, the universial answer is that currently in AZRE’s timeline, it’s 80PB, or more commonly written as just 80 similarly to how we write 2023.
But just because it was agreed on doesn’t mean it’s actually enforced outside of the four capitals.
For Vacuo, most still say it’s the year 1072, which dated back to the birth year of Eliana Hadar; the woman who would unite much of Vacuo’s land and create the kingdom. Those in the northern provinces, like the Kom Ombo Jungle, has their year dating back even further to 5620, which is when Khenti-Amenti finished being built as Vacuo’s first major settlement.
Mistral had their dates set in centuries/decades from when Huáng Qiu first conquered Northern Anima and created the Empire of Mistral. So the year for them is 20A 80. But Mistral also uses a four year calender similar to the Lunar Years irl, their years follow the seasons and four important animals in Mistral history. So you have the Spring Horse, Summer Phoenix, Autumn Tiger, and the Winter Dragon.
Atlas is a bit different. Some use Mistral’s calender, like Merlot in his journals, but others simply do it from when Atlas the city was created, rather than including the period of time where Mantle was the capital. Since Atlas was raised a year before the Great War, their year is 91.
Menagerie follows the universial calender as a whole. Individuals might also follow their homelands’ calenders, but that does not go into the overall time keeping of the kingdom.
Islanders, those who live in the islands unconnected to the four kingdoms, follow the calender that came from the collapse of the sky; which is when Ozma and Salem had their fight that desolated Evernight and broke it from Sanus. That was over 9,000 years ago, with their calendar being the year 9391.

Infrequently Asked Questions
No one asks me anything because they know I'll go off on an eternal series of tangents. It's easy to do with this new book, because like the others, especially the newest ones, they tend to feature ensemble casts, but the protagonist is both the titular character and the one either driving the main thread of story or reacting to it in a critical way. So, I'll try and cover a few questions that nobody asked at all, without spoiling everything.
Q : Who is Jarek? And why might he need or seek redemption?
A : The book ought to tell the reader the minimum they need to know from the start, but if you're curious for more, this isn't Jarek's first appearance in this series. (If not, skip this answer.)
We first encounter Jarek in "The Fate of Lenn"; he is Lenn's slightly older cousin. That also places him as a distant grand-relation-of-some-sort to Derek from "The Gift-Knight's Quest", but everything in the original trilogy occurs beyond the lifetime of anybody in these prequels so I'm not going to go there.
If you haven't read any of the other books, here's a summary. In Jarek's first appearance, he is Duke of a frontier province primarily concerned with warlike imperialist expansion into unmapped territory east of the kingdom. He is arrogant, rude, and seems to have forgotten the value of all the non-warlike things he's supposedly fighting for, condescending Lenn and much of his own people's culture when it isn't involved in battle. He has the attitude of someone who wants to be the dominant personality in every room he enters, and who may have been considered too important to face relevant consequences for much of his life. The ruler puts up with him because someone like that can be useful if a different place (i.e. Kensrik) attacks, and because the ruler is wagering that risk-takers like Jarek tend to get killed long before they can ever go for the throne, so hypothetically Jarek wouldn't be around to stop Lenn from ascending the throne when the time comes.
And then Jarek becomes too big a problem to tolerate, and I'm not going to spoil why. Lenn has to stop him, but given the circumstances, not fatally so. Jarek has lost a fair fight to a noble of identical rank, and even he can accept the terms of his loss. He and his men can't come back to the capital unless he returns with a full apology and unconditional surrender. Until then, he doesn't get to ask for money to finance his wars, nor acquire mercenaries from the capital, nor by logical extension Lenn's province (though Jarek loudly disdained the place and wouldn't have expected much from there); one punishment is to realize how dependent he has always been on the people he treats so flippantly. Even Jarek can respect the terms of losing a fair fight, so he isn't of a mind to break them by, say, attacking the capital and forcing his way to rulership.
And after calling Lenn soft for those terms, he slinks away, never to appear in "The Fate of Lenn" again. He can safely assume he'll be stripped of title even if he never apologizes or surrenders. But Lenn's terms have ramifications for many more people than Jarek, which Lenn may not have realized in his haste to speak them.
As my taglines keep saying, Jarek's defeat is not the end of him. It's very nearly the beginning of the book, save for one other scene. There is a story of interest because he faces defeat and substantial consequences for the first time in his life; how does he respond?
Q : What world does this take place in?
A : The same one as my six other titles, but in the time period of the previous two. Prince Ewald is doing whatever he does, completely oblivious to this story until the news might reach him. Duke Lenn is spoken of but doesn't appear after the prologue, because Jarek's actions have severed him from that other story. If you made a Venn diagram of timeline, you could find a huge overlap where these three stories are occurring at once, and impacting each other in ways known and unknown to their central characters, but each protagonist is also concerned with things entirely outside the purview of the others. In this book I provide the context needed to make sense of Jarek's story; if you want the others' stories, they're available to read.
Q : You say this is an ensemble cast; who else is having an adventure?
A : The first other journey we see concerns a hard-working every-day villager whose world has suddenly changed in ways no one immediately understands. Sure, there are rumours, but there isn't television, radio, or an internet, and some details haven't even been leaked to the rumour mill; all anybody knows is that an easily bottlenecked border to the next province of the same kingdom is now blocked by soldiers, and they insist people ask Jarek why they can't pass if it's such a problem to them. They're not even letting neighbours across who should be familiar to everyone who lives near the border, let alone modest traders with carts. Somebody takes it upon herself to depart her every-day life, going farther away than she has ever been from home, to seek the audience of a temperamental noble with as awful a reputation as the men surrounding him. And, as you'll find out, a blocked border crossing isn't the only problem people are living with; idiomatically, you might call this the straw that broke the camel's back.
As stated in the expanded description posted on my author Page and reposted to my timeline, Part 2 of this three part structure sees some leaders faced with a problem (called sudden and treacherous imperialism), and each has a different way of resisting. Do these methods clash because they're different, or do they find a way to complement each other? It is the struggle to preserve one's people and their ways in the face of brutal and grossly concentrated power. It's also the struggle to make sure that to the extent of their abilities, the one who betrayed them isn't rewarded for his treachery. It also encompasses cultural exchange, people with different views conversing, comparing/contrasting, and finding some understanding and acceptance of each other; I like to depict that sometimes.
Q : Does anything appearing in this story have to do with contemporary issues?
A : I hope and expect so. No character is fully patterned after any person living or dead. The clothes and technology used in this story don't cleanly map to one place at one time of our world history. Writing what should be an era of (alternate world) history, which should have an entirely different mindset, gets inevitably narrated with the lens of a 21st century guy in Canada, because that's who's writing the book. I try to pay enough attention to detail that some might appreciate it, avoiding some words that I deemed too contemporary but certainly not all, even doing some research about a particular style of longsword combat so that I could place more focus on the intense personal experiences of combat than my usual wider troop movements and their ramifications.
So, even if I didn't intend to compare some fictional tyrant to one who is alive today, I'm sure I would have unintentionally done so. I may as well do it consciously and with purpose. Also, I return to my usual point across these books: I tend to depict "better" leaders and make an implicit statement about what makes them "better" to me, while the most problematic leaders tend to share toxic methods and traits, many of which persist in the world today. That's a deliberate statement on my part that the reader always has the power to agree with or toss out, or partially agree with, etc.
Q : Given the author, shouldn't this book contain some sort of caterpillar?
A : I believe I avoided that for the first six outings, but yes, given that I'm concluding a series, I thought it was high time I depicted some sort of caterpillar. Not a magic talking caterpillar, but something completely fictional yet fairly believable to the reader. And not a creature which occupies much word count in the story, but which may have vague symbolic implications about some characters and the lessons they live to learn when spared.

Official ATF Sucking Gun Shirt
Megadeth Crush The World Tour Latin America 2024 Tonight Show April 22 Classic T Shirt
We typically go to a Christmas Eve candlelight service in the Megadeth Crush The World Tour Latin America 2024 Tonight Show April 22 Classic T Shirt. Those are crowded but not nearly as packed as the evening services. Then we meet at my sister’s house along with her family, my other sisters and their families, and Mom. Like good Texans we feast on the traditional tamales, accompanied with fresh guacamole, cheese dip, and cold beer. Our kids run around and catch up with their cousins. After dinner it’s Mom’s birthday party! She was born on Christmas Eve. For the last 25 years or so my wife has baked the birthday cake, always with a different recipe. The shot opened a cut near Stevens’ left ear that required 15 stitches. The Devils captain left the game and didn’t return. Is Covid-19 still around?
Here is Goggle's answer.
Although vaccinations, treatments, and prior immunity make COVID much less dangerous for most people, there are still those who remain vulnerable, including older people and other high-risk individuals.
Remember early in the pandemic, people were more likely to die from COVID-19 than recover, but that trend has now reversed. Here are some of the factors that are driving the switch:
1. Better access to and improved vaccines as well as improved access to care.
2. A phenomenon called mortality displacement, in which an infectious disease outbreak temporarily increases death rates in a population and is followed by a period of lower mortality rates; (not sure what this really means, got the feeling it has something to do with rose coloured glasses) and
3. A hybrid immunity—stronger immune protection among those infected after vaccination—is also playing a role.
Latest COVID-19 numbers for Ontario Canada, its probably way worse were you are.
( June 13, 2023)
Weekly Cases 2742 - Deaths 51
So again is covid-19 still around?
For Canada, overall outbreak incidences have decreased in all outbreak settings since March 2023, with fluctuations in different setting types over time. There continues to be variations in COVID-19 trends across provinces, territories and the USA.
OK lets go at this a different way, IS there still a Pandemic?
So, when is a pandemic “over,” and who decides? The answer to that question depends on who you’re asking. U.S. and Canadian healthcare providers often look to the World Health Organization (WHO) for determinations like that.
So, what does the WHO think about COVID-19? Well, the WHO still considers COVID-19 to be a pandemic. Much as we would like to lose the term Pandemic it is still around. As you might imagine, it’s hard to know when exactly a pandemic is over Why, because all the epidemiological data is not in a central location.
IS Covid-19 STILL AROUND???
YES, COVID-19 IS STILL HERE we just don’t see it anymore.
Since we no longer track the virus and report on infections and deaths. We are emulating ostriches and burying our heads in the sand. I don’t think it works for the ostriches I’m sure it won’t work for us.
IS Covid-19 still a killer?
YES, were just keeping it a secret.
What’s my best protection from Covid-19?
Wear a well-fitting respirator or mask.
It's recommend that you wear a mask in public indoor settings. You should feel free to wear a mask even if it's not required in your community or setting. It's especially important to wear a mask if you're at risk of more severe outcomes.  Apr 14, 2023
So is COVID-19 gone, NO we just stopped reporting and keeping track of the Virus
We are however better protected and vulnerable people are taking precautions.
While the death rate has dropped significantly from its peak in January 2021 — when more than 102,000 people died in a single week — thousands of people still die of COVID-19 every week. At least, they did when we were still reporting COVID-19 deaths.
Covid-19  will never disappear because it's now endemic like versions of the flu.
Stay Safe

How to Become an Electrician
Tumblr media
Electrical work is one of the most physically demanding jobs around, and an electrician needs to be able to squat, climb, and stand for long periods of time. It also requires attention to detail and the ability to solve problems.
Electricians use a variety of tools to inspect and repair electrical systems, including voltmeters, ammeters, thermal scanners, cable testers, and more. They can also install new wiring or replace old wiring that's out of code.
They can also perform electrical maintenance, such as replacing fuses or circuit breakers. Some specialize in specific fields, such as solar energy or industrial power generation. This link: https://esquaredelectric.net/ sheds light into the topic, so check it out!
There are a few different ways to become an electrician, but the most common is through an apprenticeship program. This involves four to five years of on-the-job training, technical education and certification exams. After completing an apprenticeship, you can become a licensed electrician, which will let you work in most provinces and territories.
You can also earn a degree in electrical engineering. This may be a better choice if you want to pursue a career in electrical design or research. A bachelor's degree will also allow you to take more advanced technical courses that can help you learn how to design and build electrical systems.
The number of jobs for electricians is expected to grow 9% between now and 2030. This means that if you're interested in this career, there's never been a better time to get started.
When looking for a job as an electrician, you can start by creating a resume that highlights your strongest skills and experience. Include a list of your certifications, as well as information about any relevant training you've completed.
Be sure to describe any on-the-job experience you have, as well. You can do this in an interview or on your resume, and you should be able to explain how this experience has shaped your skills. To discover more about how to become an electrician, click here!
In addition to the technical skills and knowledge you gain through your education and apprenticeship, you need to be able to communicate effectively with clients, coworkers, and other members of your team. This includes the ability to answer customer questions about your work and respond in a positive way to feedback from your peers.
You should always be willing to participate in any training opportunities that are offered by your employer or potential employers. These training programs can give you a leg up on the competition for a position and can help you advance your career.
Depending on the jurisdiction, electricians can also choose to become a field safety representative (FSR). This certification will allow you to pull permits for certain kinds of electrical work.
Some electricians also choose to specialize in particular fields, such as commercial or residential wiring. They can then become licensed to do more difficult and dangerous work, such as working on high-voltage power lines hundreds of feet above the ground.
The best way to ensure your career is successful is by getting as much relevant experience as possible. This can be done through paid on-the-job or volunteer work, as well as formal education. You can also seek out mentors to help you develop your professional skills. This post will help you understand the topic even better: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_contractor.

Joshua 15:1-63, Luke 18:18-43, Psalms 86:1-17, Proverbs 13:9-10
Today is the 17th day of April welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian and it is wonderful to be here with you today as we gather yet again around the Global Campfire and take the next step forward like we do every day. And our next step leads us back into the book of Joshua. And today we’ll read Joshua chapter 15.
Commentary:
Alright. So, in the gospel of Luke today, we are now turning toward Jerusalem, which is what Jesus has…has told his disciples in our reading from today, we’re going to Jerusalem, and I’m going to be taken from you, basically. And the disciples don't…they don't get it. As…as…as the gospel of Luke tells us they don't understand. And this is in…in part because of their expectations. The idea of the Messiah wasn't like a foreign concept to the Hebrew people. They were waiting for an Anointed One to come and lead them back to God and…and…and get their land back and dedicate it back to God. And…and just kind of diving into that really gives us a true glimpse even of our own world. There were prophetic words that they were leaning on that one day, God would rescue them, that there would be an Anointed One, but from where they sat or where they stood, where they lived, from where their lives were being lived they were in their ancestral homeland, but it was not their land. It was part of the Roman Empire. It was the province of Syria. It was controlled and governed by Rome. So, on the one hand you have Hebrew people that are just assimilating going like this is pretty good. We get all our needs met, everything is good and just try to assimilate. But then there are other people that are trying to worship the Lord God and are separating themselves because of the mixture in the land. And there are other people that are like, the only way this is gonna work, the only way is that there is Anointed…Anointed One that comes and leads us in a military overthrow of Rome pushing them into the sea, getting them out of the land and restoring the land to God. This is the only way they could see like a tangible victory that made any sort of rational sense. And, so, they’re kind of leaning in this direction. And the territory thar Jesus came from, the Galilee region even…even going back into the intertestamental period, the time between the old and the new Testaments, this is an area known for zealotry for rebellion for…I mean, depending on which side of the equation you’re on, for terrorism, for that kind of stuff, for like ambushes and all kinds of skirmishes. And, so, nobody was expecting what…what Jesus did, and it creates a sharp contrast with the way that we think all oftentimes. We think power through strength, respect through strength and dominance when…when Jesus modeled humility, forgiveness, and love, and sacrifice. He conquered the darkness and the power of death and hell by that example, a very different example than a messianic figure that rises up and creates military unrest and becomes a warlord. And that's on a macro level. But if we bring it down to a micro level and kind of put it in our own laps, it's like how we react when the wrong thing gets said with the wrong tone of voice. Like, do we retaliate and start a verbal war, or do we begin to understand that love is a more powerful weapon than any of the disruptions in our lives. Like, Jesus is modeling that love actually does conquer all even if it looks like defeat. The cross changed the entire world, right, including our own lives. Like we are absolutely affected by this If not irreversibly changed by this. And, so, this is our model. And, so, Jesus is telling the disciples this is gonna happen. They don't completely understand what He’s saying. They arrive in Jericho, which is a desert city in the Jordan Valley. This is the way that the journey was often made. Its…it's a desert route, but it's flat land and you’re not up and down and up and down through all of the hills and mountains. So, Jesus is moving through Jericho when a blind man sitting by the side of the road hears that He's coming through. We’ve seen this story before. And he cries out, “have mercy on me, son of David”, and he won't stop calling out, “please have mercy on me. Please have mercy, son of David”, even as everyone around him is telling him to shut up and trying to marginalize and push him to the outer boundaries where he can't be heard. He keeps yelling for mercy. God hears that kind of cry all through the Bible, that humble reaching, that humble longing, crying out, “have mercy on me”. And, so, indeed it gets the attention of Jesus who stops everything. And let's remember, Jesus has told His disciples what’s gonna happen to Him. They understand…they didn't understand, but He does. He understands. And, so, like, this scene, it has a lot of weight when we read it because the weight of the world is on Jesus. He's got a walk up to Jerusalem and be tortured to death and He knows it. Like if you know that kind of knowledge, you're probably going to be very very very distracted. But Jesus stops everything for this guy. And He gets near the man and says, “what do you want me to do for you?” And the man replies, “I want to see”. And Jesus says, “receive your site. Your faith has healed you.” It’s such a beautiful scene. It's such a riveting scene. It's such an important scene in our own lives and it illustrates what we were just talking about, Jesus telling His disciples what's going to happen, and they can't see it. They are blind to it. And what does Jesus say about the kingdom, “for those with eyes to see and ears to hear.” Many expected military uprising and overthrow from the Messiah, but they didn't have eyes to see that forgiveness and love was the way to reconciliation, to putting things back together instead of breaking them down further. That's our role friends in following Jesus along the path of faith putting things back together. And, so, when that thing gets said with the wrong tone of voice and what rises up in us is retaliation, that's the moment of truth right there. Will we return good for evil? Will we respond with love knowing that it's not a week thing, that it actually takes a whole lot more strength and a whole lot more focus to love in the face of it than it does to simply retaliate and continue to break things down further? God's work is redemption. God's work is putting things back together. When we go out into the world and continue to break things down because we don't have eyes to see we’re not helping. And, so, may we begin to get desperate enough for God and desperate enough to see that like this blind man, we will scream out, have mercy upon me, I know I'm blind. I know I can't see, have mercy upon me. And may we hear Jesus coming up alongside of us asking us, what you want me to do for you? And may we respond. I want to see. And may we hear receive your site your faith has healed you. This is life changing things. Like this is transformational for us. We open our eyes and see what's going on and get on board with what God is doing in this world. And at the basest level we can understand that if we’re retaliating or if we’re jumping into the fray and actually breaking things further that's not the right direction. We’re in the direction of redemption and restoration and reconciliation. We’re in the direction of wholeness. We’re moving in the direction that puts us back together again and that we get to participate in putting the world back together. Let's give it some thought today. There’s not a downside here other than maybe our pride, like other than our arrogance, other than things that we have to control anyway. There's no downside. What if we experiment in our home? What if we just take a week and go, I will respond in love. I will respond in love. That doesn't mean I'll become the doormat. That means I will respond and love. I will not further break another thing down in my relationships in my home. That's the place to start, just to see if this is the truth, just to…like we’ve come here to read through the whole Bible and many of us have been through the Bible together around the Global Campfire many many years and the Bible continues to confront us in every conceivable way possible in order to get our eyes open, that we might see so that we might walk the path of wholeness.
Prayer:
Jesus we invite You into this. It's You we need, and You have modeled a path that is a difficult path in the face of the world that we live in. And the fallenness of our human nature and our lust for power and dominance, we see what You were facing. We also see what You've modeled for us, that redemption is the way. Putting things back together, restoring, making things new is the way. And we have to confess that we have participated in tearing lots of things down through our thoughts, our words and our deeds, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. Forgive us Lord. We repent. And by saying that we repent, because we can say anything, we’re confessing that we need to go in a different direction and we need Your help to guide us. Come Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

It's not all over the place. It's there for us as a community around the Global Campfire taking the next step forward every day. And we have to do that. We take the next step forward every day but sometimes the next step forward leads us into situations that we don't know how to navigate or into circumstances that feel like they're gonna crush us. Of course, sometimes we take the next step forward into complete calm and serenity and we’ve come out of the storm. And, so, it's this kind of back-and-forth, the ebb and flow of life together. But that's the thing, together. So often we’re like shouldering these burdens and just getting crushed when we could reach out for our brothers and sisters to just simply encourage us, pray for us, be there with us in it. And that is the Prayer Wall. It's there for us to share our stories and invite our brothers and sisters to pray for us. And they do. And it's also a place to pray. Maybe we’re in that season where things are going pretty well right now, but we know what it felt like to be in the storm. And the Prayer Wall is a great place to go and come alongside those who are in the storm and let them know, I know how you feel, I’ve been through this, you're going to be okay. I'm praying for you. That is the Prayer Wall and that can be found in the Community section, either on the website or on the Daily Audio Bible app.

The Benefits of Starting an Online Dispensary in Canada!!
A lot of hard work and commitment is required to get a new business like the ODKushDaddy dispensary off the ground. You cannot expect to achieve great results in a short period of time by putting in little effort and investing little money. Consider the real estate market: it takes a long time for a property's value to appreciate. Even the stock market can experience ups and downs. For example, if you sell your stocks in a panic when they fall in value, you could lose a lot of money. So it's usually best to keep your stock investments long-term if you're hoping for a rebound. You should also not invest money that you cannot afford to lose.

The Cannabis Laws in Canada
Cannabis use has been legal in Canada since October 2018. However, this does not mean anyone can go online and buy cannabis whenever they want. You must still be of legal drinking age in your province. Before purchasing marijuana, determine whether it is legal to do so online. If you're a responsible person, you won't have to deal with the police.
Doing research is the first step.
Take the time to learn all you can learn about Canada's regulations, laws, and guidelines that apply to online dispensaries. You'll also need to research potential suppliers, both local and international, as well as any competitors who are already established in your chosen market.
Establishing a legal structure is a must. To operate an online dispensary in Canada, you must first decide on the legal form of this business. Options include sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations, each of which has advantages and disadvantages, depending on your specific needs. For example, consider speaking to an attorney or accountant for professional advice before deciding.
Designating a location for your business is another key step. Choose a location that meets any relevant provincial or city requirements. You may need to pay for permits and possibly even be subject to inspections by relevant authorities.
Get Licensed
You will need a license from Health Canada's Office of Medical Cannabis (OMC) or another regulator, depending on your operating province. Licensing requirements may vary from province to province and between levels of cultivation and sale. Generally, you will have to submit a business plan, demonstrate that your facility meets security requirements, provide proof of financial responsibility, and meet other qualifications set by the OMC.

Business Objectives
The key objectives for starting an online dispensary in Canada are to ensure customers have access to safe and legal products, provide excellent customer service, and grow the business. To achieve these goals, you must ensure that you have a clear understanding of the regulations governing dispensaries in Canada and effective marketing strategies.
Key Regulations
To legally operate an online dispensary in Canada, you must comply with all applicable provincial, territorial, and federal laws. This includes obtaining proper licensing and permits (as applicable) from the appropriate government bodies in your area. Additionally, it is important to note that different regulations may be imposed depending on what cannabis product you sell (e.g., dried flower, edibles, oils, etc.). Therefore, it is important to familiarize yourself with the laws and regulations in your area.
Marketing Strategies
To successfully market your online dispensary, you need to understand your target customers and develop a strategy that will reach them effectively. You can do this by researching trends in the cannabis industry as well as surveying existing customers. Additionally, it is important to create an engaging website or mobile app that allows customers to easily find the products they are looking for. You should also consider using social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram to promote your business and engage with potential customers.
How Profitable are Dispensaries?
Tumblr media
Dispensaries can be extremely profitable. For example, the government's Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) predicts that cannabis sales will total 655,000 kilos in 2018. If retail pricing is only $10 per gram, cannabis retail sales in 2018 will be $6,550,000,000. Other experts have proposed higher figures than the historically conservative PBO. Deloitte, for example, predicts an $8.7 billion cannabis market.
The initial investment could be as low as $50,000 plus inventory, depending on the quality of the dispensary. For example, in a good retail area, you might invest around $200,000 in leasehold improvements, security systems, and display cases, among other things. For example, based on the results of US cannabis retailers, a mid-range dispensary leasing about 1,500 square feet in a good retail area could easily expect to gross $150,000 to $200,000 per month and net 10% to 20% of those revenues.
If you are a legal storefront retailer or dispensary, you will buy cannabis wholesale and sell it at retail. The size of your store, quality, location, and quality of the merchandise will determine your revenue. For example, Apple earns $5,500 per square foot, Tiffany & Company earns $2,950, and Lululemon Athletica earns $1,560. A high-quality dispensary in a good location should easily generate $1,500 to $2,000 per square foot; thus, a typical 1,500-foot dispensary could earn more than $200,000 per year, with net profits ranging from $300,000 to $500,000.
To grow cannabis commercially, you must apply to Health Canada through the ACMPR or the CTLS for a micro-cultivation license. Prepare to spend $100,000 to $150,000 on your ACMPR application, followed by a few million more to build your facility. You're probably looking at about a quarter of that as a micro-producer. If you're not as patient as a grower, the retail side of the business may be more appealing.
Suppose you grow cannabis legally as a Licensed Producer (LP) under the ACMPR or Cannabis Act. In that case, your cost of production is most likely around one dollar per gram before depreciation, administration, and selling expenses. If you sell that gram for $10, your gross margin is 90%, and your gross profit is $9 per gram.
Conclusion:
Starting an online dispensary in Canada is a unique and rewarding opportunity that can be lucrative. There are important steps to ensure success, including researching the industry, obtaining licenses and permits, finding reliable suppliers, setting up marketing strategies, and keeping up with regulations. Establishing strong customer relationships is crucial to providing excellent customer service. Entrepreneurs can successfully start their online dispensaries in Canada with dedication, hard work, and the right resources.
