The Steerage by Alfred Stieglitz
NEW EPISODE: Episode 08 is all about Alfred Stieglitz’s “The Steerage.” Many people think this is about immigrants being turned away at port, but that’s not actually the case. In fact, there’s a lot about this photo you may not know about. It’s even considered to be the photograph that ushered in modern photography. Let’s take a look at what makes this image stand the test of time and how it’s still relevant even to this day.

#Herstory #UnDíaComoHoy #LisetteModel (Viena, 10/11/1901-NY, 30/3/1983), #fotógrafa austriaca nacionalizada estadounidense. Hermana de la fotógrafa #OlgaSeybert. Con 19 años empezó a estudiar música con Arnold Schönberg, que, como la propia fotógrafa siempre reconocería, fue una gran influencia para ella. También estudiaba canto con #MarieGutheilSchoder. En 1926, tras la muerte de su padre, la familia se trasladó a París, donde estudió canto con la soprano #MaryaFreund. Conoció a Evsa Model, su futuro esposo, pintor francés de origen ruso. En 1933 dejó la música para dedicarse a los estudios de artes visuales. Comienza a estudiar los fundamentos de la fotografía en blanco y negro de mano de su hermana Olga, fotógrafa profesional, y más bien sin especial interés por la propia fotografía, como la propia Lisette siempre confesó. Viajó con su hermana en 1934 a Niza a visitar a su madre. Aprovechó la ocasión para visitar el paseo marítimo de la ciudad y tomar una serie de imágenes de la gente de la alta sociedad local donde captaba su vanidad, soledad e inseguridad. En 1935 fueron publicadas en la revista Regards y se convertirían en las más conocidas e importantes imágenes de su carrera. En 1937 fue alumna de la fotógrafa surrealista #FlorenceHenri. En 1938, casada con Evsa Model, emigró a EEUU, que en aquella época era el centro de la fotografía mundial. Entabló amistad con #CarmelSnow y Alexei Brodowitsch, director de la revista Harper’s Bazaar, para el cual estuvo trabajando durante 12 años. En ese tiempo conoció a Ansel Adams y #BereniceAbbott. Mostró predilección por los hoteles, bares y locales nocturnos de la costa este de NY, pero también realizó trabajos más formales y retrató a personalidades como Sinatra. Se hizo miembro de la Nueva York Photo League, institución que realizó la primera exposición de su obra. En 1940 el Museo de Arte Moderno de NY compró por primera vez unas obras. En 1952 comenzó un trabajo sobre el Jazz, retratando a #EllaFitzgerald. Impartió fotografía en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de California (1949) y a partir de 1951, hasta el momento de su muerte, en la New School for Social Research de NY. Smee nella loro recensione @WashingtonPost di Cataclysm: The Diane Arbus Retrospective Revisited del 1972, in vista al @DavidZwirner a New York. La mostra, organizzata con Fraenkel Gallery, ricorda il 50° anniversario della retrospettiva postuma dell'artista del 1972 al @TheMuseumofModernArt. Smee lo definisce "l'evento culturale di questo autunno. ” La presentazione, che Smee considera "ingegnosa", comprende molte pareti ricoperte di estratti di scritti critici sul lavoro di Arbus.
