The explanation for why totk’s story is so Not Great and how disconnected from its predecessor it feels being that the devs didn’t want to alienate new players who didn’t know anything about botw’s story just falls apart the more I think about it. Nothing from this stupid half a plot works unless the player is familiar with specific details from the better games that came before it.

The believability of Link and Zelda’s connection to each other hinges on you knowing about the nuance of their relationship in botw. The ancient sages fighting with the champions’ arms and divine beast helms will only be impactful to botw/aoc players because totk doesn’t bother to explain the significance of that callback at all. Fi’s cameo is meaningless unless you either got every memory in botw or finished the master trial dlc (and know about her from skyward sword). You’ll only get the full context of Teba being sidelined in favour of a 12-year old if you played a specific chapter of Age of Calamity’s second DLC. Like sorry but I think Nintendo just made a bad story tbh

In order to make my AU a little more interesting, I decided to make a couple of changes to the lore of the original game. And inspired by the Tailed Beasts from Naruto, I came up with this idea:

I will not go into too much detail, but I will say that once there were seven huge beasts that stood guard Hyrule. However, Demise wanted to take them under control by taking away their tears. As a result, the beasts (except the Light Dragon, which could not be transferred to the dark side) had to be sealed, and their tears given for safekeeping to the sages, including Rauru and Sonia. After a while, the Divine Beasts were created...

All this sounds quite interesting, but being relatively unfamiliar with the lore of Zelda games, I’m afraid that with my headcanons I will make the story of my comic as confusing as the story of FNAF. So it’s only a matter of time before the seven Divine Beasts remain in my AU. Maybe if I study the lore more closely, I can improve this idea…

Presumably the Divine Beasts were modeled off of the helms of the sages, and we know that they were named after sages (Ruto, Medli, Darunia, Nabooru), so one could assume that the sages' names were the same as the ones from oot and ww (or their names were the modified versions (Ruta, Medoh, Rudania, Naboris)) and the Divine Beasts were named after them, too

as much as i love totk, i'm really sad they didnt go into all the sheikah lore. imagine if rauru was the king that banned the sheikah from using their technology and caused half of them to side with ganondorf & form the yiga clan

I’ve gotten most of the way through totk (i think) and I’m pretty sure at this point the sages are never going to get names/face reveals

like before the game’s release I didn’t want the champions to return because they died a hundred years ago and their spirits are at peace now they don’t need to be brought back for some plot contrivance

but in comparison the sages preform the same narrative role (warriors from the past who fought ganon and are now passing on their powers to help the future generation suceed this time) yet they’re such a downgrade to the champions. Like at this point I’d rather have beloved established characters return then have them replaced with lackluster characters who don’t even have names

Have my copy of TOTK, but I avoided a lot of the important parts of BOTW because I'm a big scaredy cat. Just yesterday I went to the castle for the first time. I'm doing my first ever master sword trial. As much as I'm excited to start the new game, I think I'm going to give myself the week to just spend some extra time finishing things up and trying some of the things I avoided for one reason or another.
