the Real mystery of death note is that Light somehow convinced the fandom that he is the socially competent one and L is the recluse with no social skills. Light thought it was realistic to respond to the emo freak at his college who said he was a world famous detective after hunching over like a gremlin taking his shoes off in public and sitting like a frog was "if you're telling the truth i respect you greatly." L frequently performs social tests on people close to him to see what they'll say with the goal of studying their responses and picked up a call from his friend in a potentially volatile situation by flawlessly imitating a douchebag friend who parties too much while likely never having been to a bar in his life. they are not the same.

Death Note as a show is such a 'trying to order a milkshake at home depot' situation to many people - I've seen it claimed over and over that Code Geass or Monster are equivalent to if not better than Death Note because they do human drama so much better.

And it just makes me stare at a wall because Death Note was never meant to be about interpersonal drama or grand nuances of morality. Of course that is part of what we take out of it and focus on as readers, but it was never meant to be the main focus at all.

Death Note isn't failing these aspects, because failing something implies that you were actually trying to accomplish it.

At its core, Death Note is a suspense story designed to entertain people. That's it. That's the goal here. And it's good at that goal.

I think once you realize this, it is easier to make peace with the canon.

One of the stories of L's backstory that I've created in the back of my mind that will keep me up at night is how L had (intially) GENUINELY thought that he'd be taken care of when Watari brought him to the Wammy's House only to be groomed unrelentlessly, bent in all shapes to find the perfect mould, stripped of his human rights and watch as other kids his age or younger went through the same cycle of abuse.

i cant help but truly feel for him sometimes. of course, he isn’t perfect but i truly 1000% believe he deserved normalcy & love instead of whatever half-assed guardianship he was given. a child is just that. a child.

child L wasn’t an investment or a new project or the next prodigy or justice incarnate, he was just a kid. i recently read L file no.15 and it just made me sad to watch the beginning of this kid’s life-altering ‘career’ when all he wanted was a challenging puzzle.

i read watari realising that L was intelligent beyond his years & thinking ‘i can do something with this’

quillish wammy wasn’t a father, he was an inventor. he invested in L, and that isn’t raising someone.

and ofc watching the same thing happen to other wammy children while watari & roger look for his replacement,, that screams ‘you’re expendable & replaceable’.

which i’m sure is a very interesting thing to internalise.

(ofc i interpret L’s whole induction into wammy’s & backstory as. well. tragic but that’s just my interpretation 😭 i just think about L too much for my own good)

i always include L among the Wammy Victims™️ for this reason, it’s just presented differently because he’s the blueprint for the others. but that still isn’t good. that’s still damaging.

and he didn’t deserve to go through that.
