immediate first reviews of the (non-nightcore) Mammalian Sighing Reflex album from Wilbur!

spoilers below if you haven't listened to his album! I really like it! Also, I'm not looking into lyrics online just yet, it's very late and if I do that I won't sleep cause it'll just consume my mind for hours.

-Amazon Standing Lamp: I love the guitar here and I laughed when it took me about 5 seconds to realize the higher voice isn't a woman, but actually Wilbur Soot singing alongside himself. He's sampling something at the end I don't know.

-Mine/Yours: The lyrics about kissing like a job and tongue and teeth *mwah* and the last line ohhhhhhh boy. The beat reminds me of a beating heart.

-Around the Pomegranate: the instrumental at 30 seconds in is SO GOOD the beat with the distorted voice is so fun. i can make out the lines "no one else can save you" and "nowhere you [can?] return to". This whole song is very fun despite the lyrics and meaning. It's just a very experimental. I like when the music gets very loud. Speaking of the lyrics the ending where Wilbur says he wants to feel normal again is just...I'm gonna go lay on the floor.

-I Don't Think It Will Ever End: Again with the experimental music! It kinda immediately reminds me of that part in Bo Burnham's Inside, the song "All Eyes On Me" where he has a mid-song monologue. It is very interesting in a meta-sense due to the comparison I can't help but make between this and Wilbur's streams. Where he's got a "chat" or audience responding to him in a cheery voice no matter what he says.

-Glass Chalet: I like the scratchy feeling in the instrumental. He's throwing stones in a Glass Chalet, which according to google is like a fancy type of cabin found in the mountains (the alps, specifically?). Also, I love the sampling he's doing with the talking at the end.

-Melatonin 130: I like the distorted voice at the end. He's really experimenting with this album and I'll keep saying it because I love it! I love the ending lyrics about everyone hoping you fail and the apes with coloring books, I think he said?

-Oh Distant You: The music takes up most of this song, instead of the lyrics, but what is sung is very nice.

-Eulogy: One of the lyrics hits very close to home. Not in a good way, but not in a bad way either. I guess it'll depend on the day I listen to the song. It's a good song. I like it a lot.

-Dropshipped Cat Shirt: The distortion kinda reminds me of those hyperpop songs that went viral on tiktok back in 2020 and it's very new to hear it used in this way with these lyrics and the general tone of the music. The last line! God, what is it with this album and the final couple of lines that hit me upside the head? I just need someone to tell me I'm tired???? God DAMN. shit...

-The Median: Very good. I like these shorter songs in between full-length songs. It's just a minute long but I really like it.

-Trying Not To Think About It: The lines about romance and marriage...man that's relatable. this is probably gonna be my favorite song. And then the rest of the song just.../pos but ooooooof

-10 Week Rule: It's a good song. Was NOT expecting that line in the chorus, which I'll let people reading this find out themselves.

Overall, this is an excellent album! I really love it and I will be listening to it constantly. This gives me the same feelings that YCGMA gave me, while still staying very distinct. It's not more POLISHED than ycgma, but it's clearly made with Wilbur's more improved skills in music making. (there is a word for this i can't remember rn)

I'm gonna commit to picking a favorite song after a couple more listens, but so far I really like Trying Not To Think About It and Around the Promegrante. This is a very creative album and I'm glad he's experimenting here. This doesn't sound like Lovejoy, and I'm super happy. It's unique, it's fun, and it's sad!

As the gunfire ceases you just turn to her and rip whatever clothing she DARED wear to cover her sex, and before you know it your fingers are already inside her, and she's pulling you deep into an embrace, her moans filling your mind as the air around the two of you becomes electric and extremely deadly to any of those pathetic MORTALS who tried invading your planet

Her Psionic power also fills your mind, and she's multiplying the pleasure you feel without having to use her fingers on you at all.

And as you bring each other to the brink and cum together (as any respected couple would), and the blast of your combined psionic power fries all the electronics around you again (this time on accident), you see the excited spark in her eyes, and knowing full well what she's thinking about, you embrace her again and reach deeper into her soul, your bodies dissolving into energy and merging together in a sensation not unlike the orgasms that you've just had, until you emerge together as a new being, a powerful Archon.

And as you Rise from the ground you spent so much time rolling around on, having your feelings multiplied in a way that the orgasms you just had with her dont even come close to comparison, you both see the incoming ships coming to "rescue" their "friends". Your intertwined souls soar with feelings of love, desire, and shared bloodlust, and you blast the first ship out of the sky with your combined power, which makes your mind go blank with bliss, and only the nature of your new being keeps you from collapsing into a moaning mess. Its gonna be a long night, and none of them will live to see through it.

I'm pretty clueless to fashion production; is there no way you can produce a "decent" facsimile of that camo by taking a digital pattern and sort of printing it onto a similar match of fabrics? I actually have some stake in something like this existing, because there's a lot of discontinued aloha shirt patterns I wanna claim for myself.

you can, technically, and for reproductions that’s usually the easiest solution. if you look up “michell pattern camo for sale” you’ll find a variety of shops selling cheap dropshipped commodities, usually outsourced, in every pattern under the sun from the emblematic, like M81 woodland, to the esoteric, like 1945 German Leibermuster. all of these are polyester shein-esque clothes tho, with all the quality of a halloween costume and made at the cheapest price possible. to truly recreate a pattern as authentic to the originals as possible, one not only needs quality fabrics to print on but a similar machine to those that existed in the factories 40, 60, or 80+ years ago, and to replicate the printing process. camouflage is typically printed in layers, similar to silkscreening though at an industrial scale, and to a discerning eye this can produce distinctions in the final product. as one might expect, none of these factories still exist, their tooling has disappeared into time, and the manufacture process was likely either never recorded or kept secret. that said, some modern companies do seek out old tools, of which Buzz Rickson’s became famous with their bomber jacket repros, and it’s not like it’s impossible to make something that looks nice with new methods. however, even if a cunning tailor finds a solution or negotiates with a textile mill to produce a pattern, such manufacturing steps are often time consuming and expensive, and the commodity itself is only appealing to a very niche market. thus, old camo patterns are either not worth it to businesses to try and recreate, or have a dizzying price tag when they do.

Aloha shirts are actually a very apt comparison, not only are the patterns themselves somewhat of a civilian equivalent of camouflage, but the trends in production and reproduction are similar. Companies like Sugar Cane are well renowned for their Hawaiian shirts, but, like with military apparel, because the tooling doesn’t exist anymore many of the best new-made garments are made with vintage dead-stock fabric.

all that said tho, i’m not an expert on such things so all of the above is more or less what i’ve learned or intuited through exposure, there are likely more erudite articles on the subject.

The world, when seen from above, is different, painted in abstract through a jumble of confusing patches and colors: swatches of fabric on a patchwork quilt. So it wasn’t until their fall took them within a few hundred feet of the ground that Adam finally managed to make out what he was seeing.

The ground on the Necritorium was a sort of rusty orange just a little lighter than natural martian soil. The sky above would have been mostly dark if it were not lit by the golden light of anima souls funneling down towards the ground, beyond that, shapes lit up the dim atmosphere, flashes of colors and shapes just beyond the scattered light in the sky.

Looming tendrils, and flashes in animal shapes.

The war for the universe was going on above them, obscured only just by a the thin curtain of atmosphere.

But beyond all of that, beyond the incomprehensible enormity of a war between gods.

There was a war being staged right at his feet.

Two armies.

One massive, black, neatly ordered into lines and battalions as armored vehicles rolled across the ground.

And the other

A ragtag jumble of assorted dropships aliens and vehicles, less than a tenth of the size of the staged army just beyond the horizon.

Jets streaked the sky overhead, at least one helicopter whirred n the distance.

From his vantage point

Things looked impossible, and his heart sank.

Their fall took them within a few hundred feet of the ground, unobtrusive and unnoticed by either army. Sometime during their extended fall, Krill had regained his wits and become accustomed to the stomach dropping sensation. Never had Adam ever thought Krill would participate in something as dangerous as skydiving, but here he was, pulled into dangerous things of his own free will even if he didn’t want to admit it.

“Fire thrusters.” he ordered, watching Krill closely to make sure he managed.

Awkwardly, Krill flipped over so his feet were pointed downward. It Wasn't pretty or graceful, but he managed firing the thrusters of his jetpack until he slowed, seeming to shoot upwards from Adam’s perspective. Now he knew that Krill was alright, adam fired his own jetpack, coming to a stop less than a hundred feet above the ground, a fact that did not phase him in the grand scheme of things.

What was a little danger in comparison to the end of the world.

With some difficulty, Krill dropped down to meet him, following Adam’s lead as he steered them away from their original drop point and towards the staging area where the others had made it through.

Now that he was no longer falling, and his life and the lif of Krill was no longer in immediate danger, his thoughts turned elsewhere.

To sunny.

The Omen had been obliterated in a matter of moments, her shield crushed and her crew destroyed like it was no more than a minor inconvenience. Apollyon had swatted them away like a fly. Simon was gone, and so were countless others. Who's to say that anyone had managed to survive the ongoing war between the maker and the Architect. Who's to say what had happened to Kelly, Koslov or McCaster.

It may have been the Drev way to accept death in honerable battle, but Adam knew.

If sunny had died….

He didn’t know if he’d be able to handle it.

She was stronger than him in that respect.

So, while he flew, he prayed and hoped it wasn’t counter productive. Honestly he wasn’t sure who he was praying to. It seemed that the architect was busy at the moment, and unlikely to hear whatever prayer he might offer if he was the kind of god that answered prayers in the first palace.

Perhaps it was the universe to which he was offering his soul.

“There they are!’ Krill said, drawing Adam’s eyes downward, passed the red cross on the back of krill’s armor and towards the waiting ragtag army.

To his surprise it wasn’t as small as he had first imagined. Multiple drop ships had managed to make it through along with several troop transport vehicles and about as many artillery units. They had multiple sky worthy fighters which he could now see lurking in the cloud cover above them. A large chunk of the intended team had managed to make it through, or so it seemed, and that was enough to spark the dying flame of hope that still smoldered in his chest.

His eyes scanned the crowd looking for the dropship that,

There!

There it was.

It was a little worse for ware, smoking on one wing and sort of canted to one side where one of its landing struts had been blown off, but it was there!

His eyes continued to scan.

Scan until.

THERE!

A flash of pearl white armor accented in blue.

“Sunny!”

The landing he made was steep and fast as he dove from the air retracting his wings just in time to plunge into the crowd and land hard on the compacted dirt beneath him causing the ground to rattle with the weight.

Krill was not so graceful forcing several soldiers to leap to the side as he came plowing into the ground like a rather slow meteorite.

Looking up from where she had been talking with King James, Sunny turned and brightened just as he had. They both stepped forward wrapping each other in armored arms and hugging tight. At that moment Adam wished he had as many arms as she had so he could hug her twice as much, but he had to settle for the most crushing hug he could manage.

“You’re alive…. For…. a minute I thought.”

Adam nodded, “I know, me too.”

“We saw you get overwhelmed.” She began “As soon as apollyon attacked it looked like he was gunning for you…. I….” She shook her head once, “I thought I had lost you.”

Adam shook his head, “Not me, harder to kill than a cockroach.” And then he looked up to acknowledge the others, king games General Kimball, lanus Kanan Dzara and, to his great relief, Ramirez. “What's the situation here?”

Sunny shook her head, but it was General Kimball that spoke, “Not good, I can tell you that much. Energy readings are off the charts We’ve estimated about an hour, maybe two hours before their little plan is operational.” His face was a mask of grim irony.

“Under two hours.” Adham affirmed approaching them from the thicket of bodies, glowing gold and white in his pearlescent armor.

Adam nodded to his counterpart as he approached, “Good to see you made it through, but enough with the pleasantries, we need to act fast. Our sources have managed to gather some last minute battlefield intelligence that may be able to help us.” he motioned towards the funnel of golden light which, to Adam, seemed to be burning brighter than it had been before?

More souls to harvest all of a sudden?

The thought made him shiver.

“We know the general layout of the nercritorium. Souls are funneled in from above.” he motioned towards the bright funnel of glowing golden light, “From there they enter the main building at the front where they are sorted into anima categories, powers, thrones Deus or otherwise, each type of Anima is easier or more difficult to break depending on the strength. From there they are funneled downward into the holding chambers where they are processed and prepared for the next stage. They are exposed to simulated Revelation light so that the unconscious anima wakes from its slumber. Mostly after you die the Anima transports itself back to revelation while the consciousness is shut down in order to assure a more relaxing passage. Once awoken by simulated Revelation light they are made to be lucid, their minds and emotions broken. This may take more or less time depending on factors. Once broken, they are funneled downward towards the core of the planet, where the anima is slowly stripped apart and broken into individual pieces. These pieces are again sorted and processed until they are refined into usable energy at the core of the planet where they are stored.”

Adam didn’t like this, didn’t like the sound of this in any way shape or form.

He tried to imagine all of the souls trapped in a simulated hell to which they were more than well aware.

And he shivered.

If being torn apart wasn’t bad enough, now the void was planning to unmake them forever, to feed them to Apollyon who would consume the universe and all of her laws.

Adham shared his grim look.

“From there the anima energy will be released through that aperture where it will pass through its final stopping point just inside orbit.

The Maker shared a holoprint with Adam that included blueprints of another strange looking space station, comprised of a single large rings and a small uncovered control platform.

“The energy will be concentrated like a laser and routed through here for maximum effectiveness. The energy will be captured here, charged and then focused.”

Adam shook his head, “IS there any way we can release the trapped anima before they even leave the terminal.”

Adham shook his head, “No they can only escape either forward or backwards. Really we have three options. Our number one and best option is to destroy the mechanism that allows the energy to escape thus stalling for more time and allowing us to defeat the enemy. We could reverse the polarity on the necroorium itself allowing the anima to escape through the funnel and disperse through space, some would die in that case but it would stall the war for the time being. The third option…. Well it really is only last resort.”

“Go on.”

“If the gates do open, and we are too late, we have a few minutes while the orbital station charges to take control of the station, and redirect the anima energy somewhere else.”

Adam paused and nodded, “How would we get from the ground into orbit in time?”

Adham shook his head, “We aren’t sure, but our men report seeing general Kazna inside the necritorium and then once again outside on that ring station.”

“Doesnt she have the ability to warp on command?”

“Not without massive reserves of energy.’ Adham shook his head, we would be able to detect energy discharges like that. My assumption is that she has a gate open somewhere inside the facility that leads to the station for ease of access.”

Adam nodded and turned to look at the others, ‘Are you all ready for this? He swept his eyes over Sunny, Lanus, kanan, Dzara and Ramirez, now joined by others Etium, Celex Lindsay Jane and a myriad of their other fighters,

Adam motioned to those he knew closely, “You all, on me, we make up the strike team that gets into the Necritoriu.” He held up a hand to silence Adham’s protests, “We don’ have the artillery they do, we are going to need Makers to clear the way by getting rid of the heavy armor. Hopefully, they won’t care so much about a couple of constructs when dealing with Makers. We want to hit this from all angles, give us as much a chance to get through as anyone. You strike on the opposite side, try to draw the bulk of their people, got it.”

This time Adham didn’t argue, just nodded.

“Alright,” Adam said, “Let’s do this.”

earth is, in stark contrast to neomuna, a breath of fresh air. in this case it's quite literal as osiris's feet finally touch earth and her stable gravity. it was awkward finding a way for aarush to fit into his jumpship, seeing as it was designed and built for an average sized human so he had to make the even-more-awkward suggestion and request they take a cabal dropship instead.

they both have so much work ahead of them in studying the veil but between his algorithm working tirelessly at decrypting and guardians assisting nimbus, neomuna can survive without both osiris and their hero for a couple of days.

he looks cautiously up at aarush after reacquainting himself with earth's horizon, suddenly self-conscious of the last city's disposition in comparison to that neon city on neptune. he knows the other isn't so judgmental, but there is a slight fear that this city and people he so dearly loves despite his tenuous relationship with it, will come under scrutiny.

he's not an idiot. he knows how neomunians talk about the city. he recalls reading reports on their famed stargazer who scoffed at desperate and starving faces during the dark ages. (desperate and starving faces he had grown familiar with. he is older than the metal grates and concrete beneath their feet.) and he knows how neomuna closed its hand into a tight fist and struggles still to keep it closed.

Gentle Hands

The recruits’ mission was coming to a close and they were waiting for the dropship to pick them up at the Siphoned Forest. Witness, Arsonist, Shepherd, and Wanderer were picked for this week's scouts, and with their efficiency (and Arsonists' maniacal tendency yet proficiency to raze their enemies in his path), they were finished with their mission early. The group agreed to meet up at a designated point later that day to be collected and went of their own ways to kill some time.

“Your hands are soft.”

“Hm?”

“Oh, I uh, said your hands are soft…”

Wanderer and Shepherd lay together by one of the towering snow-covered trees, sap oozing out from the taps that bore into them. The snow was soft and gentle, perfect for laying atop. They were in reverie, enjoying each other's company and the still environment around them. Wanderer had gently picked up Shepherd’s hand from where it was resting on her chest and ran his thumb over her palm, examining it. He enveloped her hand with his as if to guard it safely and carefully. Her hand was small in comparison, his gloved ones making his much bigger.

She didn’t say much to his comment and only smiled softly under her helmet. He felt the pads of her fingertips, the soft bumps of her knuckles, and the smooth sides of her fingernails. He memorized the creases of where her fingers and palm fold when they are clenched in a fist. He measured the length of her fingers and compared it to his. He took his time, indulging in the feeling of her hands. Suddenly Shepherd released her hands from his.

“May I take your glove off?” Wanderer nodded slowly.

Shepherd carefully pulled off Wanderer’s right glove and underneath was the opposite of her own hand. Weathered down by years of survival in the harsh winters, Wanderer’s hand was calloused, rough, and bore many scars on his palm from constantly climbing mountains, and ropes and swinging his ice pick. His fingers were thick with tough skin. There was no time for self-care for him and the consequences bore itself on his hands. With a saddened expression, Shepherd clasped his hand in between hers. Her chest ached for Wanderer, praying for the man who didn’t deserve to live a life like his.

Shepherd gingerly touched the rough callouses of his hand, her fingers caressing his palm.

“Does it hurt? Your hands?” Wanderer shook his head and took his hand away to put his glove back on.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. It’s just… It’s been too long since I’ve felt the touch of another person’s hand. I’ve forgotten the feeling. Years of being alone have made me used to forgetting and I’m afraid of losing that feeling again.” Wanderer looked away from Shepherd, suddenly afraid of disappointing her.

“Hm,” Shepherd only looked solemnly at him. The sky turned into a light blue-grey color as the Snow began to gently fall from the sky. Wanderer instinctively pulled his fur-lined hood tighter around his head as specks of white dotted his dark blue winter coat. Shepherd pulled her cloak closer around her, thinking of what to say.

They sat in silence once again.

“Wanderer.”

“...”

Shepherd put her hands on Wanderer’s helmeted face, brushing the fallen snow away with her thumbs from his glowing, purple, horizontal visor. She gently pulled his face to hers, their foreheads touching and making a soft “clink” as the sound of metal hit together. Wanderer was surprised but cautiously welcomed her touch. He slowly raised a hand to place on top of hers.

“I’m not going anywhere, Wanderer. You won’t be alone this time.”

“...”

“I promise you don’t have to do things by yourself anymore, Wanderer.”

“...”

“You’re going to be okay, you’re okay with me.”

The snow continued to fall on their shoulders. The silence was piercing as Shepherd waited for Wanderer to react.

Wanderer wrapped his arms slowly around Shepherd, pulling her into a gentle hug. She put a hand on the back of his head and the other on his back. He started crying softly into her shoulder, relieved to finally be vulnerable to the world.

OOH okay, two answers for this: first one is a motorcycle, because, in comparison to most everyone she hangs out with, she small. She's no ninja, so it isn't as sleek as Prowl's alt.

Ebenholz often lamented his fate as a vessel for a melody most foul, but it seemed holding prodigious power over instruments was not as unique as he initially imagined. Rhodes Island was home to all sorts of characters, and at times, his own circumstances seemed rather mundane in comparison.

"Fräulein Pramanix, thank you for your assistance today on the battlefield." The unique quality of the Arts from her bell reminded him of the wand and dice in his possession, its clear tones resounding though him. From his perfunctory studies on geography, it was said that Kjerag remained isolated from the rest of Terra. He doesn't know if their own Arts were usually entwined with music like Leithanian casters, but...

You've noticed it too, haven't you, boy? She carries a strange power-

Shut up, you. Now’s not the time for that. He realizes his face has edged into the cusp of a grimace, then quickly smothers his lingering dissatisfaction.

“What I mean to say is that I lack for combat experience." Which is an incredibly mild way to say that he had essentially fallen on his face upon being deployed from the dropship, then nearly missed his order to begin casting. “Your Arts were of great help to compensate for my shortcomings and I am deeply grateful for it.”

Aside from a few petty skirmishes, Leithanian nobles did not often draw their wands on one another after the Twin Empresses dissolved His Majesty’s court. Adjusting to a paramilitary operation such as Rhodes Island has proven challenging in more ways than one, but luckily, he hasn't been tossed out onto the streets yet.

i think this story is great

not in that it's a good piece of writing or anything, it's very much not

but because it's an excellent example of the fundamental nature of all of these "humanity fuck-yeah" stories

which is to say, barely-disguised imperialist fantasies
