Omg i found a review on goodreads that sums up my issues with DV8 gods and monsters (and dv8 as a whole). I want to add the power corrupts angle doesn't work when 1) they were already corrupted log before they arrived on the alien planet and 2) they're not treated as the troubled teenagers/young adults they actually are. "But they're supposed to be that way they're anti heroes!" I get that but they're also supposed to be worth getting invested in. No matter how many incarnations of DV8 I just can't help but shake my head in dismay

Like the entire concept of DV8 always been flimsy since they seem more focused on the anti part than the hero. Then a lot of them were just plain unlikable or not as entertaining they were claimed to be. Their entire premise is being evil versions of the gen 13 because the gen 13 is soft and goody two shoes, ignoring the gen 13 also had their fair share of personal issues and edge. And while some of the dv8 did eventually grow a moral compass o feel like they weren't really treated with empathy even though most of them are traumatized. But the story makes them so evil and edgy it comes off as cartoony (doesn't help the artstyle SUCKED). It's why i prefer matthew's characterization in the movie over the comics: they actually bother giving him a personality. He isn't reduced to his rape trauma or being ivana's sex toy, or a boring psychopath. He actually has a human side, a charismatic cunning side and clearly equals with Ivana. And he's voiced by Mark Hamill that's that's always a bonus.

I hope if DV8 does return one day they end up with a writer that has the skill to treat the characters with compassion&humanity and not "gen 13 but EVIL and that's their entire personality! We so smart!"

Okay i gathered my thoughts and i think the reason why i don't vibe with the DV8 compared to other groups of their kind is because the comics beat you over the head with how fucked up and EVIL they are but we barely get to know them as individuals. They're just crazy and horrible assholes and that's their entire character. And even as a darker reflection of the Gen13 there isn't very much to show HOW they're different beyond being...evil and fucked up. And it's kinda sad seeing these people who clearly needed help get such awful writing.
