Theda Bara is considered by many to be the original 'Vamp' thanks to her sexually dominating roles. She is one of the most famous silent film stars to ever live - she never appeared in a sound production - with a peak between 1914 and 1919. Some of her best-known films include A Fool There Was and The Devil's Daughter. She made more than 40 films between 1914 and 1926, but most were lost in the 1937 Fox vault fire. This portrait of the star was originally taken while Bara was taking on the role of the eponymous character in Carmen, a now lost Raoul Walsh film released in 1915. #victorianchaps #vintage #thedabara #actress #nostalgia #beauty #vamp #earlyfilm #retro #silentmovie #hollywood #1910s #portrait #edwardian #oldphoto #goodolddays #filmstills (at Hollywood) https://www.instagram.com/p/CokjXpRjm_2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Taking off her hat and coat. C.1900 approx. Found glass negative. All taken on me plate. These series photographs are always rather interesting, almost like a mini movie. You often see people taking off their hat and coat as it’s an easy movement to make when out and about. In line with my pervious post, I think this is the sort of thing you might have taken at the seaside or at a fair. Interestingly the first frame is over exposed. ——————————————————- #founfnegative #foundphoto #vernacularphotography #earlyfilm #glassnegative #seaside #seasidenovelties #edwardian https://www.instagram.com/p/CipqCaUMFq-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Stills from 'L’Écrin du Rajah' (The Rajah’s Casket), Gaston Velle, Pathé, 1906, from 'City of Cinema: Paris 1850–1907,' published by @delmonico_books & @lacma "Glimpses of faraway lands were not limited to actualité films, but also appeared in fictional movies. This film exemplifies a fantasy, set in an Orientalist mélange of the Middle East and South Asia, featuring fanciful details of costume and art direction, especially the creative uses of color stenciling and tinting. The narrative itself was less important than the sense of a virtual journey spectators embarked on as they watched an invented world unfold." Read more about the book via linkinbio. Edited with text by Leah Lehmbeck, Britt Salvesen, Vanessa R. This morning’s silent film is by Merian Coopet and Ernest Schoedsack (who made King Kong). An early documentary of the migration of the Bakhtiari tribe of then Persia to bring their herd to grazing lands. Marguerite Harrison, a journalist, accompanied them and is on camera quite a bit. Best intertitle in the movie (exactly as it appears in the film): Camels in the snow!

- Ein Projekt von Sarah Schmidt // The Phenakistoscope is a precinematic device which was developed around 1830, mainly for entertainment. Because of the cuts in the disc and the interia of the eye a series of static pictures are percieved as a movement. Come over, take a look and make your own Phenakistoscope!

Stills from 'La Statue' by Alice Guy-Blaché, Gaumont, 1905, from 'City of Cinema: Paris 1850–1907,' published by @delmonico_books & @lacma "The confusion brought about by mechanization is mocked in this film, as two clowns struggle with technologies that enable and capture movement. One clown discovers he can turn a crank to set the statue in motion, then goes away to obtain a camera with which to photograph this curiosity. On his return, he ends up swapping places with the statue (who exit in frustration) and proves himself an unsatisfactory photographic subject for the other clown. This photographic finale also appears in Alice Guy-Blaché’s 1900 movie 'Chez le photographe, in which a man refuses to stay immobile while his picture is taken." Read more about the book via linkinbio. Edited with text by Leah Lehmbeck, Britt Salvesen, Vanessa R. Conjoin (Chapter 3), Snow Yunxue Fu, 4K Looped Version from Snow Yunxue Fu on Vimeo.
The collection of the floating liquid forms the shapes of the bodies together at times and then disintegrate into other objects and parts, underlining the connectivity we have with one another, in both material and immaterial ways. We have a long-term dilemma for we have a short-term body. Working with 3D software and CG imaging technology, Fu creates scenes of experimental abstraction that translate the concept of liminality into the subliminal digital experience.
