Fics and books, please!
— your friendly neighborhood spideyman
Hello again friendly neighborhood spideyman!! I’m so happy to see that you’re back!! ☺️☺️
As far as fics go….I tag all of the stories I’ve read under #10/10 would recommend - you should be able to find a multitude of amazing stories from a bunch of amazing writers there.
I keep a personal reading list in my ‘likes’, which I call my ‘to-reads’ … and I’ll usually bump the story from my likes to my 10/10 tag once I’ve read it. It would take me eons to list all of the fics in my likes on this post, so I’ll share some of the authors that I know are in there (as well as my fav history books) under the cut so this doesn’t get too long.
Before I get into it, I just want to say that messages like these absolutely MAKE. MY. DAY. I have so much fun talking to y’all about everything and anything, so please don’t hesitate in jumping into my ask box at any hour of the day!
Ok so for my ‘to-read’ list: I’ve got a good number of fics by @padfootdaredmetoo , @look-at-the-soul , @zablife (particularly her corrupt a wish fics that I liked ages ago but still haven’t read, and I really need to get on it) , @shelbydelrey , and @acewritesfics (who was previously ‘sunsetbeachesandwriting’) that I need to get into reading…also @cillmequick ‘s latest Lockdown installment too…I just know that they’re all going to be amazing, so I suggest you check their blogs out.
Now onto the second part of your ask (if you’re still reading this, thank you!!!) …. I’ll preface this by saying all of the books that I read are nonfiction and centered around history. They’re also mostly focused on US history (as I’m from the US).
The Smell of Battle, The Taste of Siege by Mark M. Smith (American Civil War) - it focuses on one of the most interesting ways to study/analyze conflict: through the five senses.
The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan (The Dust Bowl/The Great Depression) - the narratives that this author provides of people who lived through this incredibly trying time are so gripping…I believe it’d be an interesting read even for someone who doesn’t like history.
The Dalton Boys by David Allin (American West/Outlaws) - a super, super interesting book about a gang of brothers who were lawmen turned outlaws. It’s written in the style of a story, so it’s super easy to follow and very exciting at times.
Stampede by Brian Castner (Gold Rush in the Klondike) - another super interesting book that details the stories of those who went to Alaska during its gold rush. There’s a lot of struggle and strife, and Jack London’s (the author of Call of the Wild) in it too.
Never In Finer Company by Edward G. Lengel (WWI) - I’ve not finished this book, but what I read of it was super, super interesting. It focuses on the ‘lost battalion’ of American soldiers that were stranded in the Argonne Forest during the war. I watched a movie based off of it in a high school history class way back when, so it was pretty cool to find this book on it.
I’m currently reading a book called This Republic of Suffering by Drew Gilpin Faust. It’s about death and the American Civil War and it has been super interesting so far. If you’re ever interested, feel free to check back on me some time from now to see if I got anywhere on the book and if my thoughts have changed.
This got long, didn’t it?? 😅😅 if you made it this far, thanks so much for reading my babbles on my history books…I think I can go all night honestly haha….but I won’t, I promise. Thanks so much again for sending this in, spideyman anon…I really appreciate you dropping into my ask box!! ☺️❤️

I’ve been waiting two years to share this news. I’m not really sure how this came to be, but certainly it is a highlight of wishing my work out into the world. 26 years ago in a crowd of many I could not take my eyes off a dancer at the Schemitzun Powwow and, I think for the first time in my life, approached a stranger to ask for a portrait. This is what we made together, “Tommy in His Car”. And now it is in this stunning new book, Our America, A Photographic History, by Ken Burns with an introduction by Sarah Hermanson Meister. Oh, and it is on the facing page of an image by Sally Mann, and just page widths away from the iconic works of Hansel Mieth, Elliott Erwitt, Minor White, Walter Iooss, Richard Avedon, Danny Lyon, Eve Arnold, Dennis Stock, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Gordon Parks, Robert Frank, Bruce Davidson, Jerome Liebling, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, Eudora Welty, Helen Levitt, Marion Post Wolcott, Walker Evans, Margaret Bourke-White, Paul Strand, Charles Sheeler, Alfred Stieglitz, Laura Gilpin, Lewis Hine, Edward Curtis, Mathew Brady, Timothy O’Sullivan, and Carleton E. Watkins. There are many more known and unknown photographers, but these are the names that leapt out at me when I finally got to hold the book in my hands last night.I’m kinda excited! Many thanks to Tommy Christian, Ken Burns, and Susanna Steisel.

Hey, y’all! Stories Update!!
Hey, y’all. So, I know I haven’t exactly been posting much on here lately. I’ve, in a way, taken a small break from writing my Negan/JDM stories for a bit. But, that doesn’t mean that I’ve stopped writing. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! I just wanted to let y’all know that I haven’t stopped writing. In fact, I’ve been working on stories with @mychemicalimagines and @supernaturalwritingbunker. I decided I would let you know what they were, in case y’all wanted to go check ‘em out! If you love my Negan writing, feel free to check out these other stories I’ve worked on/been working on! They’re listed in alphabetical order, based on the first name then by the first name of the fic, unless otherwise stated (i.e. the Jasper Hale “You’re My…” Series). Stories we haven’t posted yet don’t have links, but everything else does. I’m hoping that I’ll get some more inspiration to keep writing for Negan here soon. We’ll see! Stay safe. Stay negative of Corona. Have fun! And as always, feel free to reach out and talk. I’m here. I just might not always reply back right away.
*For the stories listed below, I’ve separated based on which blog it’s from, and whether it’s a movie or show fic. Beyond that. I’ve separated them based on which show or movie it is, and if applicable, I’ve indicated if it’s a series or not. I’ve included the title of the story, what it’s status is (finished, in progress, or on hiatus), how many chapters there are, and the relationship pairings. If it’s on hiatus, the main reason for that, unless otherwise indicated, is that we just aren’t quite ready to finish that particular story. It’s like having a kid, watching it grow, and then them being all grown up. You wanna hold onto that innocence for as long as you can. XD Another reason that they might be on hiatus is we just haven’t had any mojo for writing it. Now, for the “in progress” stories, we are still writing those, but, some haven’t been updated in awhile because they aren’t getting enough love for us to want to continue. If you read one of them, and decide you love it, please leave feedback so we can continue it for you!

Page 31: Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber may look like the picture-perfect couple, but Justin admits that their first year of marriage wasn't what he expected, saying it was really tough and there was just a lack of trust and he blamed the strain on his own personal struggles and said before he didn't have someone to love or someone to pour into but now, more than two years after exchanging vows with Hailey, he has that
* Kacey Musgraves' romance with Dr. Gerald Onuoha is giving her butterflies -- the pair are so happy they found each other and while Kacey, who split from her husband Ruston Kelly last summer, is trying not to get too ahead of herself, her connection to the Nashville-based doc is off the charts and it's got the potential to go a very long way
* Today's Savannah Guthrie is thankful to have husband Michael Feldman in her life, especially given the demands of her early morning work schedule
Page 32: Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker are getting serious -- all the details on their whirlwind romance
Page 33: Adapting to parenthood has been a breeze for Emma Stone and she's soaking in all the precious moments of being a mom for the first time -- she and husband Dave McCary welcomed their baby daughter in March and Emma is super protective and a very hands-on mom and Dave is also hands-on and helps with their daughter -- thanks to the little one, Emma's marriage with the comedian has also gotten stronger and having a baby has brought them closer in a way they never expected -- Emma is looking forward to getting back to work; she's taken this time off to embrace motherhood and her number one priority is to raise a healthy baby so that's what she's focused on right now
Tumblr media
* Britney Spears is setting the record straight -- despite her ongoing conservatorship battle with her dad, Jamie Spears, she is doing totally fine, assuring fans that she's extremely happy and she has a beautiful home, beautiful children and she's taking a break right now because she's enjoying herself -- although the legal drama with her father is heating up, Britney is staying strong and she has this wonderful ability to see the positive even when the odds are against her
* Keeping Up With Us -- production for the Downton Abbey sequel is underway, Mossimo Giannulli is a free man, Chrissy Teigen returned to Twitter 23 days after announcing that she was leaving the platform, Vanessa Bryant remembered her late husband Kobe Bryant on what would have been their 20th wedding anniversary, Helen McCrory lost her battle with cancer at age 52 according to her husband Damian Lewis

Page 35: Colton Underwood is ready to live his truth -- during an interview on Good Morning America, the former Bachelor came out as gay, saying he's run from himself for a long time and he came to terms with his sexuality earlier this year and he's the happiest and healthiest he's ever been -- now that he feels like he can finally breathe, Colton is excited for his next chapter, which fans will get to see on an upcoming reality show with Olympian Gus Kenworthy -- a huge weight has been lifted off of Colton's shoulders and he is looking forward to being his authentic self
Page 36: Moms Tell All -- Happy Mother's Day! From milestones and manners to rules and nanny-bans, celebs and insiders talk about raising kids in Hollywood
Page 37: Bindi Irwin says life at home with her daughter Grace Warrior has been positively blissful and her family with dad Chandler Powell is so full of love, adding that the newborn has already met some of the wildlife at the Australia Zoo where Bindi and Chandler live and work and of course she's seen some crocs and really lit up when she saw them -- while the Aussie conservationist is sad Grace won't get to meet her late dad Steve Irwin, Bindi's brother Robert Irwin and mom Terri Irwin have been by her side constantly and Robert is obsessed with Grace and has been helping out so much and her mom has been the biggest guiding light and she's already taught Bindi so much about being a mother, both in how she raised her and by showing her things day by day and Terri is quite the baby whisperer and she's so great a calming Grace down when she's crying -- first-time father Chandler is also a natural with Grace and he's been the most supportive and involved dad and together, he and Bindi make such a great team -- for now, Bindi, who stars with Chandler in Crikey! It's a Baby!, is hoping Grace will follow in her animal-activist footsteps, saying having three generations of strong women working as conservationists is a dream come true
* Jennifer Garner said teaching your kids is a lifelong job, and certainly values are something you have to show them -- Jennifer, who shares kids Violet, Seraphina and Samuel with ex Ben Affleck, is staying true to her word and has led by example when it comes to things like kindness and patience and she won't let anyone in the house to judge or speak ill of people, and she enforces the same wholesome, traditional values that she was raised with and the kids have been taught to be loving, hardworking and fair -- Jennifer has always taken a kids-come-first approach to parenting, and it shows as they bake together, enjoy movie nights, read books and have very active lives and it's a very healthy, happy household filled with laughter and love
Page 38: Gwen Stefani has her hands full with her sons Kingston, Zuma and Apollo with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale, but she wouldn't want it any other way -- Gwen's a tomboy, so having three boys wasn't daunting for her at all, plus she has fiance Blake Shelton by her side to pitch in with parenting duties and Gwen and the boys have a blast at Blake's ranch in Oklahoma where they enjoy riding their ATVs, and they play baseball and football -- it's not all fun and games, though because Gwen is big on boundaries and manners and she doesn't want to raise Hollywood brats and it's important to her that her sons be gentlemen
* Meghan Markle's pregnancy with Archie was no walk in the park, as she revealed during her bombshell TV interview with husband Prince Harry, the couple had concerns over whether or not the royal family would provide security for their son and claimed there were conversations about his skin color -- but this time around, as Meghan and Harry gear up for baby No. 2 at home in L.A., she's doing everything her way, without the royals and Meghan and Harry feel blessed that they're able to raise their daughter in the U.S. and can live by their own rules and make the decisions they feel are best for their children; having independence is the most important thing for Meghan and she's got free rein to be exactly the kind of mom she wants to be -- her parenting style is really like most mothers out there, and she's been craving pasta and doing yoga two times a day as her due date nears and she keeps a lot of art supplies out to foster creativity and healthy snacks around and she's a devoted mom and wants the best for her kids
Page 39: Kate Hudson has a lot on her plate, so the mom of three, who shares son Ryder with former husband Chris Robinson and son Bingham with ex Matt Bellamy and daughter Rani with boyfriend Danny Fujikawa, knows when to put her foot down as things can get a little overwhelming at times for Kate, but when she says no, it absolutely means no, and the kids respect her very much because of that
* Gigi Hadid, who shares daughter Khai with boyfriend Zayn Malik, wants to spend every waking moment with her precious little girl -- Gigi could easily afford to employ a team of nannies but chooses not to and she prefers to do everything herself and besides, she can't bear to be away from Khai for more than a few hours
* Candace Cameron Bure's three grown kids are flying the coop, but she's still super involved in their lives, despite slowly becoming an empty nester -- the mom of Natasha, Lev, and Maksim with former hockey player Valeri Bure says it's been a very transitional time and she's been trying to help them make decisions they feel good about and it's challenging, but they're figuring it out
Page 40: Oh, Baby! Meghan Markle's due date is just around the corner, and here are all the details

The Tomorrow War - A surprisingly enjoyable sci-fi action thriller
In all honesty, I had no expectations for this movie. Given the way it was dumped on Amazon, next to no promotion, and subpar trailers, I expected this to be a disaster that the makers and production were trying to hide away. When the reviews came out, I was surprised the the reviews were mixed but not the disaster that I expected it to be. So, as part of my fairly free Sunday, I put this on out of curiosity. And fair play to this film, because I would say this is a pretty entertaining movie.
Now is this a great movie? No. It has some tonal inconsistencies where it veers between being a cheesy post apocalyptic action movie on the tone of Independence day or the more serious approach of an Edge of Tomorrow. I would say, overall, tonally its definitely aiming to be more like Edge of Tomorrow than Independence Day. I would say it largely achieves it. And it even manages to be emotionally resonant in parts. Its also a movie where clearly money has been spent on it. The films action sequences, SFX, and especially the creature design are all very strong. The alien creatures are genuinely scary and its a good thing the trailers didn't reveal anything because their appearances always creates tension. I don't try to break my head over time travel. There are always plot holes in movies and tv shows dealing with time travel. Its pointless to get too worked up over it in my opinion.
The film's first and second acts are when the film is at its best. The first act does a neat job setting up the world. The way the world reacts to a future war, the way the draftees are selected, and even the way the time travel is explained is pretty unique. The second act is the film at its best when the Pratt's Dan Forrester travels to the future and meets his grown up daughter in Strahovski's Col Forrester. That relationship is the meat of the movie and its actually very effective. BTW, her identity is not a spoiler and I'm glad the movie doesn't treat it as a big twist since pretty much everyone guessed it from the trailers. The third act is where the film falters a bit. There is a specific moment at the end of the second act, where the film peaks, both emotionally and story wise, but then there is another 30 mins which comes after that which feels like a different movie. People who have watched the movie will know what I'm talking about. And its not that this portion is bad. It just feels a bit disconnected and doesn't quite capture the tense and thrilling nature of the second act. And its also where the film veers away from the father-daughter relationship to the father son relationship between Simmons and Pratt which doesn't really have much set up apart from one scene in the first act. So its not quite as emotionally resonant. It does become a bit more standard alien action movie, although it does it well enough.
The performances are good, but there are only two characters who get any sort of depth. Pratt's Dan Forrester being the obvious one. He delivered a fairly subdued performance. The film makes good use of his everyman earnestness with the occasional dose of humor to center the movie. Pratt resists the urge to go big and there are a few emotional scenes which he nails. This performance closer to his performance in Passengers, problematic elements of the character aside, than in Guardians or JW. Yvonne gets the meatiest role I've seen from her in movies and she nails it. I've been a fan of her since Chuck and also in The Handmaid's Tale. The scenes between her and Pratt are excellent and the highlight of the movie. JK Simmons lends his usual amount of gravitas in an underdeveloped role but leaves a mark regardless. He looked ripped as hell. Betty Gilpin is underused as well. Sam Richardson and Edward Hodge have the only others roles with any sort of distinction. Sam Richardson is essentially the comic relief and his humor does stick out at times as tonally inconsistent with the rest of the movie. Hodge is reasonably good.
In the end, this movie surprised me. This isn't an Edge of Tomorrow level movie, but it is an entertaining two hours and 10 mins without credits. I didn't feel the film dragged. In terms of non franchise sci-fic action, this is definitely better than most. Its Chris McKay's first foray into live action and he does a commendable job. Its definitely a far cry from The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed, but he shows a fair amount of confidence given a film of this scale and budget. If Nightwing ever gets made by him, I will definitely be interested. Overall, a 7/10.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)
Tumblr media
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was the first completely computer-generated, photorealistic film. It holds undeniable historical importance. When we saw its trailer people asked “Is this the beginning of the end for live actors?” of course it wasn't but for a moment, the world was paying attention. Years later, FF still looks great. Too bad the story is generic and the characters nowhere near as interesting as the technology that brought them to life.
Set in a post-apocalyptic 2065, the planet has been decimated by an asteroid impact. The space rock was small potatoes compared to its inhabitants: legions of invisible aliens who move freely through solid objects and kill anyone they touch by sucking out their life force/spirit. Aki Ross (voiced by Ming-Na) and her mentor, Doctor Sid (Donald Sutherland), are convinced they can defeat the invading “Phantoms” by finding eight spirit signatures that together will create a singularity capable of destroying the creatures. The leadership council of Earth doesn't take them seriously, forcing Aki, Doctor Sid, and a squad of marines (including Alex Baldwin as Gray Edwards, Ving Rhames as Ryan, Steve Buscemi as Neil, and Peri Gilpin as Jane) to search on their own.
I don’t think anyone could be fooled into believing that Aki is a real, flesh-and-blood human being, but it's close. Look at the details in her hair, the texture of her skin, and her clothes. We still see uncanny valley faces today but they're rare in this movie from 2001(!).
Once you get past the visual razzle-dazzle, you spot the problems with the story and plot. What's happening... isn't interesting. It’s filled with mysticism that's a struggle to latch onto. All this talk about alien ghosts, Gaia spirits, singularities, and collecting signatures makes you wonder when this cut scene will end so you can pick up your controller. Legions of identical enemies who pop out of nowhere, a team of space marines with watered-down personalities, a quest to gather items and save the world? It feels like a video game, which is appropriate but I doubt this is what director Hironobu Sakaguchi wanted.
No one we meet feels alive or like they exist when they're not on-screen. The best example is the antagonist, General Hein (James Woods). Describing his personality is a struggle because there's nothing there. It's like trying to describe a hole without the stuff around it. He's a jerk who refuses to listen to anyone whose instinct is to point a giant gun at the aliens and keep pulling the trigger until they're blinded by smoke. He's one-dimensional evil so we can keep attention away from the mysterious aliens and slow down our heroes.
With the great-looking visuals, the flat characters, and a story that’s as intangible as the alien Phantoms… the question that keeps coming up is "why?". Why was this movie made? Certainly not to satisfy fans of the Final Fantasy franchise. This has nothing to do with anything on your console. It has nothing to say about spirituality. It doesn't introduce us to compelling characters. Even as "proof" that imaginary women can be attractive, it fails. We knew that already. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within exists to justify its existence. The people at Square realized they could, so they did.
The picture is a novelty and little else. It’s so full of clichés and its world makes less sense the more time you spend in it. What does a prison in Final Fantasy look like? 3 walls and a laser grid. How is a laser grid better than metal bars? What if there’s a power outage? It's just needlessly "futuristic".
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is a missed opportunity the size of an asteroid but it’s not even really that bad. It’s mostly dull and unmemorable, the kind of movie you randomly pick up on Blu-ray because you remember seeing it and thinking it looked great, but can’t remember very well. When you watch it, you realize why everything about the story slipped your mind. Unless you worked on this project, there's no reason to check it out. (On Blu-ray, August 11, 2015)
