So that Jumanji movie? It got a sequel! And I finally got around to watching it. So here we go.
Because of the trials they went through in the first film, the four leads of that film have stayed together as a friend group even after going to college in different schools. Except Spencer, who has begun to drift apart from the others, even breaking up with Martha because his life hasn’t turned out as exciting as he’d hoped. Spencer’s grandfather Eddie is also staying with him, and the old man is pretty jaded and bitter about his life, about opportunities he missed, and in general about being old.
Spencer misses a get-together of the group, and since they hadn’t heard from him in ages they go to investigate. And oh no! It turns out that he’s been messing with the Jumanji game console they smashed at the end of the last film, and gotten himself stuck in there. So our companions once again venture into the world of Jumanji for another quest, this time to rescue Spencer and save the landy of Jumanji from another villain. Except this time, Spencer’s Grandpa Eddie and his frenemy Milo ALSO get sucked into the game, and they don’t really understand video games at all.
Fun times, all around.
This movie hits a lot of the same beats as the first one–especially in regard to Spencer’s character, who once again has to sort of gain confidence in himself and learn from the game. It’s not a total rehash–he has a much better idea of how to handle himself in Jumanji, but it’s still him going through a lesson about himself again. It’s not all repetition, though. The other characters from the group have quite clearly learned from their last adventure.
What throws them is that, except for Martha, they aren’t in the same character avatars anymore. So all the skills they learned, and figuring out how to handle those characters, is now significantly less useful. Making things even more complicated is that Grandpa Eddie and Milo have ALSO been sucked into the game, and they’ve got their own issues to work through.
I think including Grandpa Eddie and Milo in the adventure is spectacular. It isn’t very common that there’s a big budget action movie that features the elderly characters in a meaningful way. Very often they’re mentor characters or parents who get killed off to further the drama or the lead’s character development. Or, you know, just comedy. And Eddie and Milo’s scenes are usually played for comedy, but they’ve also got a meaningful character arc in which they grow and learn as well.
Also, props to the cast of the in-game characters? I thought it was impressive seeing them do a group of teenagers in the first movie, but they’re almost all playing different characters in the second movie, including two older folks, and sometimes the characters switch avatars. That’s…dang, I did not expect to be heaping this much praise on these performers’ acting skills, but here we are.
[I had some questions as to why the game is different this time around, and why things have changed, but screw it, it’s magic. It does what it needs to do.]
The movie ends in a manner that suggests that it might lead to more movies down the line. There’s talk of doing another, but I haven’t seen anything definite, so as it is I won’t hold my breath. But considering how creative this one turned out, I would be very interested to see how a third movie would turn out.
If you enjoyed the first movie I highly recommend that you check this one out. If you haven’t seen the first one, and you like action comedies, then I strongly suggest you check out both of the movies. I don’t think that this one makes much sense if you aren’t at least familiar with the previous film in the sequence.
It’s a lot better of a movie than I thought I’d get from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle which itself was much better than I expected.

'Robert Downey Jr. and Dwayne Johnson are both some of the most renowned actors Hollywood has ever seen...
Downey’s latest movie, Oppenheimer has been one that has gotten him some of the highest praise he has heard. His work alongside that of Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Matt Damon was one that many came to acknowledge. Not only was the movie hyped much before its release, but even after it came to the theatres, fans just could not stop talking about it.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Movie Surpasses Dwayne Johnson’s Film
Robert Downey Jr.‘s Oppenheimer is still running in theatres even after months have gone by since its release. According to Twitter user Luiz Fernando (@Luiz_Fernando_J), its tenth Friday just saw a minute difference of -31.8% from the previous week, the film’s stats have never looked better. The film also happens to have performed better than Dwayne Johnson’s Jumanji: The Next Level, replacing it to become the 86th highest-grossing movie of all time.
Johnson’s movie made a box office record of $801 Million, something that was later broken by Christopher Nolan’s movie. Currently, the film has earned a whopping $916 Million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). This number could very well increase in the near future, perhaps even surpassing the $1 Billion mark. Although that is only something fans could hope for, breaking such a record is no small achievement. The movie gained a lot of attention not only because of the star cast but also because of the heavy-hitting performances. The storytelling and directing were on another level as well, easily making it one of Nolan’s best works to date.
Oppenheimer is the Highest Grossing Biopic
Not only has Oppenheimer officially surpassed Jumanji: The Next Level, but it is also the highest-grossing biopic of all time. Even after being in theatres for so long and being taken down from 350 cinema halls across the United States, there hasn’t been a major decline in the viewership of the movie.
People still seem to enjoying the masterpiece and can undoubtedly watch it numerous times. Although it has yet to break the $1 billion mark like Barbenheimer’s counterpart, it is still a beloved movie for everyone.'
