one thing I want to know about you: what are your thoughts on the role of religion in Olivine's character arc?

omfg. I've written so much about it scattered across a ton of untagged analysis posts... let me see how many of my past thoughts I remember off the top of my head

so, let's first break this down into broad strokes:

there's the tropes of religious (Christian coded) characters in BL and hentai and how Olivine compares to those standard tropes

there's how religion shaped Olivine's upbringing and trauma

there's how religion continues to shape Olivine's healing and how he's examining what about faith and religion does and doesn't work for him

in general, Christian coded characters in BL and hentai follow a certain template. it's typically a corrupt nun/priest who looks the part but disregards actual faith in favor of debauchery, or it's a devout nun/priest who learns the pleasures of sex (consensually or otherwise) and stops being faithful, or it's a religion that is aesthetically Christian but the entire church is horny as fuck. the first two essentially posit sexuality and (Christian) faith as incompatible, while the third one just sidesteps the entire issue.

Olivine takes a fourth route: his narrative is about grappling with reconciling his sexuality with his faith. his church is anti-sex... but does that mean his faith has to be too? what is the relationship between organized religion and personal faith?

we see a little bit of this in Idol Fest's main story; part of the conflict is that the church is officially anti-idols, but then Olivine and Eiden discover that a lot of clergypeople are secretly Tidal Wave fans. when Olivine suggests holding the Idol Fest finals in front of the temple of water, the top officials at the church acquiesce surprisingly quickly. the church is hypocritical, and Olivine is not the only member who's been hiding desires that go against official church policy. when faced with this realization, Olivine's answer is this: then we change the church to allow us to be freer. our current doctrine need not bind us forever.

for his personal upbringing, I think it's interesting to compare Olivine's behavior to his siblings', and infer the differences between how they were raised from there. we see brief glimpses of his brother and sister in his Zest for Life and Fanciful Cappriccio rooms, and I think that his siblings seem... really carefree? they're mischievous in the way little kids often are, and I just can't imagine Olivine ever being allowed to act like that as a kid.

there's almost no chance Olivine's siblings weren't also raised religious, so we can reasonably infer that although religion had a huge influence on how Olivine was raised, it wasn't the sole reason. in fact, Olivine says in chapter 4 that his parents raised him so strictly was... because of his gemstone. more specifically:

Olivine My parents told me that my innate special powers come from the Grand Sorcerer of legend. This gemstone in my abdomen is proof of that. So, in order to show my gratitude to the God of Klein for this gift, I must devote my life... to the temple.

which I find interesting, because... it's less that the religion is inherently abusive, and more that the religion was used as an excuse to abuse him. if it wasn't religion it would've been something else. that doesn't at all absolve the church nor its doctrine, but it's a little bit more nuance to an already nuanced narrative about religious trauma, and it gives more insight into why Olivine is trying so hard to reconcile with his faith instead of throwing it all away. it was used to hurt him, but it doesn't have to be hurtful forever.

there's also how Olivine attributes elements of his path towards healing to the God of Klein. another quote from chapter 4:

Olivine As a disciple of the lord, I'm always happy to help those in need. Even our chance meeting and the events that followed - I'm sure it all happened by the guidance of the God of Klein. Eiden Your faith really is super strong! Olivine My soul has been saved. There's no reason not to have the utmost faith in the lord. Wouldn't you agree, Eiden?

it's interesting, also, that it's Eiden's actions that ultimately reaffirm Olivine's faith. if you want to be poetic about it, Eiden is Olivine's redemption.

it's not that Olivine never doubts. smearing monster cum on the gemstone altar in the hopes of destroying the temple is, uh, pretty doubtful. but there's something touching about Olivine getting the space to doubt and question and still deciding that he believes, on his own terms, in his own way. faith that has been questioned and reaffirmed is stronger than faith that is never questioned.

there's other stuff that I haven't covered because, look, I chose the subject I'm currently studying explicitly because I can't write essays for shit. but there's also interesting stuff in Olivine's belief that everyone deserves the chance to repent, the way Klein nobility performs religion without believing in faith (see: Classy Affairs, Festive Glimmer), and the absolute clusterfuck that happens in Chimes of Darkness.

I'm thinking about making a fanmade Nu: Carnival event. The plot is basically that Oli needs funds for Temple repairs, and Eiden's idea to gather up the money is to host a Café. He presents some of the most common themes in his world, and a colossal intra-clan rivalry ensues.

Team #1 wants a Butler Café: Elegant, formal, "serving well to always serve." Focus on inpeccable manners, exquisite quality, and perfeccionism. Serves mostly salty foods and some fancy pastries.

Team #2 wants a Maid Café: The clashing aesthetics that give it a unique aura. Focus on creating an individual experience for each customer through the atmosphere. Serves all things dessert, from Parfaits to cutesy-looking pancakes.

Team #3 wants a Cat Café: Cozy, fluffy, and warm. Focus on the guest's comfort and wellbeing; the attendants are encouraged to engage with chats with attendees as it gives the Café a homey ambiance. Serves all types of hot, soul-soothing drinks and homemade baked goods.

I've decided on Team #1: Dante, Kuya; #2: Blade, Rei #3: Olivine, Quincy. The rest is up to you!

This is gonna be severely limited by the fact that Bad Purple Man isn't a real character but let's go!

Alight hello mister mysterious antagonist. Are you Huey? I don't really care tbh...

I'm pleased with the direction his character seems to be going as of NEON Carnival 2. Still a yandere obsessed with earning Eiden's affection, but it seems like the story will in some way resolve his desire to kill the clan members, making it into milder jealousy. Seems like he might be 'around' but not fully integrated/respected by the others, like a pricklier version of Kuya.

Kolt and the Council of Sorcery will take his place as main antagonists, I think, with Rin actually opposing them in such a way as to help along the redemption/switcharoo.

Favorite moment

Well this is a short list to pick from, at least XD It has to be his voice reveal at the start of the second revel, together with the premise of jinxing everyone with reverse personality magic. That was very fun, and I enjoy his voice. It was also cool when he fought Dante I guess.

Idea for a story

So here's the thing: I'm very canon compliant. My imagination is usually limited by what canon has explored, and I dislike writing speculative fic. I do have a Rin/Rei fic, but it makes heavy use of Rei's PoV and keeps Rin's motives mysterious because I myself don't know them. There's only so much mileage one can get out of that trick! I need to know more about his place in the story and his worldview.

I do get the occasional Rin thought, but it's mostly motivated by wanting to whump wolfboy and knowing that even Kuya might be too soft for it. I've joked about an AU in which Aster summoned Rin instead of Eiden and he's toxic to all the clan members, but I feel that character wouldn't be Rin, just someone's evil OC with Rin's aesthetic.

Unpopular opinion

I think that his relationship to Eiden is some bullshit Square Enix split persona stuff, but if it was actual blood incest I wouldn't care. Gay incest is hot. Please put in the newspaper that Phaerlax said gay incest is hot.

Favorite relationship

He only has one. But it's a good one. I enjoy a good yandere.

Favorite headcanon

To fully serve as a mirror to Eiden (and theoretically fulfill all his desires), Rin is a switch. He brings 'service' vibes to sex but the service is unrequested.

Their attentive eyes scanned the audience, hoping to find a general demographic among the crowd. Lots of children and just as many, if not fewer adults. Not enough teens to pick out individually, but they're scattered about in the ensemble of unpleasant, impatient screeches. A relatively easy assemblage to please. Loud chatter echoed off the bright yellow and red painted cartoonishly over the walls. The audience hushed up quickly as Dogday's loud voice boomed over the speakers. "Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome one and all to the Smiling Circus!" Dogday announced, swinging his cane in entertaining figure eights. The audience broke into a roar of applause. Several "I love you Dogday!" 's rang through the atmosphere like the piercing chime of a school bell. "We have quite the lineup for you tonight!" Dogday starts off his set like he would any other performance: a quick teaser to the show; a few clever jokes that even get the staff cracking up; and ending with an introduction to their first act. "Our first act of tonight is a fresh one, one never seen before!" Dogday often exaggerated his announcements, which, admittedly was the reason his short act was so admirable. This crowd has no doubt seen a clown or two before. "Allow me to introduce to the stage, Funny Fossa!" As Dogday promptly made his way off stage, circus march music began to blare from the speakers as the infamous Funny Fossa began their act. A truly mind blowing act they performed as well. It began with the clown riding a unicycle, which is difficult as is, upside-down while elegantly juggling three colorful, plastic balls with their back paws. Funny deservingly earned a handful of audible gasps and enchanted "Oooo" 's for their almost acrobat-like viewing. Their platinum purple fur glistened like snow under the bright lights accentuating their, small but noticeable, golden jewelry and over-the-top clown makeup paired with a simple yet loud clown-like jumpsuit that surprisingly fit their entire aesthetic. Their act finished quickly, being their first, as they took a final bow. "Own next act is sure to twist your sense of reality, the Magnificent Bubba Bubbaphant!" I think OG kuya was my 1st SSR actually, 1st chapter H scene, and thats probably why he still holds a spot in my heart. i'm a villianfucker and i thought he was more ~dramatique~ and fun compared to the first few guys. (my 2nd impression of him was seeing him in the sunburst fever PV and losing my mind seeing Eiden in a ballgag with a butt plug. i'm so mad i never got Aromatic Exotica kuya).

Thoughts on Sci-Fi and Fantasy

So, for the past few months I've been writing a sci-fi story called The Eiden Heresy. In that time I've had the opportunity to explore a genre I haven't and it's been very enriching. One thing I have noticed though, from a writing perspective, is that Sci-Fi tech and Fantasy magic operate very similarly. To the point they can merge into one at times. In some media magic operates as a form of physics and engineering, with Arcane and Full Metal Alchemist being a good example of that. So I'm going to expound on my thoughts here.

The primary thought I've had is that Fantasy and Sci-fi as settings, merely alter the aesthetics of what is essentially the same thing. The tech we see in Sci-FI, and the magic seen in Fantasy, are essentially the unrealistic solutions to unrealistic problems within a story. By which I mean in a more grounded work of fiction such as office place romance, problems are realistic. Missing a bus is a realistic and potentially disastrous problem, gets you in trouble at a job you need to pay rent after all. Whereas in Sci-fi and Fantasy, the potential solutions to these realistic problems are so numerous they don't register as issues. A good example is in the picture above, an actual problem in a Fantasy setting is the approaching horde of skeletons. A solution to that is to wave your hands and chant in forgotten tongues to throw some lightning. In a Sci-fi setting, the image below offers an example of a problem which might be faced. The need to genetically engineer to flora to survive on an alien world is solved by observing complex strings of data and constructing specific machines. Both are unrealistic solutions to the problems faced. One requires you know the lightning throwing spell, the other that materials for the tech are available. Functionally, magic and tech are both the solutions to problems found within a story they only differ in their aesthetic. There's a continuum along which we can place the futuristic tech in Star Trek, magical science as found in Arcane, and the magic of shows like Merlin.

The point of the tech we see in shows like Star Trek, is not necessarily to ask how it works. That can be fun and interesting to discuss obviously. However in my view the point of these problem solving devices is to make audiences go, "wow it'd be so cool to have that". These pieces of fiction allow us to wonder what it would be like to have these fantastic solutions to little problems. It also prompts us to consider how we tackle the larger ones. The horde of skeletons sent by the Lich King who is at war with a kingdom of light and the need to colonise a distant world because of the consequences of climate change. These are far bigger problems we can't consider in everyday life because those small problems hold us back from it. Then we ask, well what about fiction like that? Where there are unrealistic problems without unrealistic solutions.

Zombie movies, books, or games are a great example of this type of story. Characters have no means to tackle the number of undead, and need to just avoid them where possible. However because of this something interesting happens where conflict actually arises from realistic issues such as tense group dynamics, resource shortage, or illness rather than Zombies. A similar issue happens in Dystopic fiction occasionally (though living in the UK at the minute I am cautious to call a Dystopia unrealistic). In such fiction, you'll find that because these large authoritarian governments or capitalist hellscapes are basically impossible to challenge directly problems are more realistic. We have characters who need things like obtaining enough followers on twitch to feed themselves, avoiding zones where you're likely to be attacked by authorities, tension between characters living in a stressful circumstance. The place where Dystopian fiction typically differs is that characters will gradually work towards finding a solution or changing things after encountering potential allies. Not always, but usually in early books there would be very little direct confrontation in with the corporations or government which created this Dystopia. Not always though, there's plenty of variation and many examples like 1984 where direct confrontation never occurs.

On the opposite end of the spectrum we have unrealistic solutions to realistic problems. Here we tend to see the "rules" of tech and magic get very clearly defined as these works of fiction explore solutions we can't have to problems we do. Strangely we tend to start dealing with economic or sociological problems after a while, because all these new solutions have extensive knock on effects. Alternatively we get shows like Little Witch Academia in which the unrealistic solutions are less accessible than the realistic ones which are almost as effective. Which can explain why the magic or tech is not used widely as its only useful in dealing with unrealistic issues for which there are no realistic solutions. I'll admit the whole unrealistic solutions, realistic problems thing is a bit more widespread in anime.

With all this you might ask where my fiction falls into it. The Eiden Heresy is a Sci-fi novel set on an alien world with living energy beings called Eidolons. Humanity went there 2000 years ago, there was a war, and a pocket colony of humans still survives. Their government operates on a basis of prestige where the more famous and respected you are the more political power you wield. Which forces the King to hear you and listen to legal reforms you demand. They use semi-futuristic technology which was either rediscovered or reverse-engineered from the wreckages of their space ships. However those outside of affluent areas usually only possess technology equivalent to the 1910s. This is partially a means of the nobility maintaining control and because powering such technology requires an Eidolon be captured. So I'd say the interesting thing about that in regards to what I'm discussing is that some people have those unrealistic solutions while others don't. There's a disparity in this society which creates a lot of conflict between different characters. Many of whom have their issues with the powers that be.

Anyway this is all just my opinion as a writer and person who wrong constantly. I'd love to know what you all think.

Okay, so what are your guys theories about the new event coming up. I doubt it would be about Blade and Dante, as that would be way to soon and they usually indicate which characters the event is for when they announce the upcoming updates. For me, I think it would most likely feature Eiden as his birthday is rather close, and it would be neat to know more about him.

Also, while unlikely to happen, but I hope that despite the cutesy looking aesthetic of the event that the next event seems to have, it would have a lot of angst material for our favourite MC since his past wasn't exactly the best after all.

It would also be neat that the banner for this event will have the previous limited editions charactera from the previous events for those who weren't able to get them...but I doubt that would ever happen :"3

ARTEMIS     keen sense of a hunter,  freckles like constellations on their skin, piercing eyes,  disheveled braid, moonlight peeking through the shadows,  the calm of the forest at night, lying on the grass and staring at the stars,  mother doe and her fawn,  protecting their kin, the moon shimmering on a still lake,  quiver full of arrows resting against the bark of a tree,  running with wolves,  bonding while circled around a campfire,  not being much of a people person, arrow hitting a target, popping egos,  patience on 3%, touches heaven and returns howling.

Thoughts on Eiden? literally one of the hottest mcs ive ever seen. i thirst over him more than some of the other characters in the game lmaooooo. i LOVE that he's a switch--i feel like that's so rare in these types of games and he legitimately enjoys it which is just divine. he’s living the dream. i love him as a character both aesthetic wise and personality wise. one of my top mcs for sure
