“…nel 1971 partecipai a una trasmissione televisiva: si chiamava Speciale tre milioni, perché si riteneva che tanti fossero i giovani dai 20 ai 30 anni. Tra gli altri, ricordo un episodio, avvenuto proprio a Sant’Agata di Puglia: era una serata in cui ero molto stanco, per cui andai a dormire presto, rispetto ai miei standard… ma captai alcuni discorsi di Claudio con i miei musicisti Vince Tempera, Ares Tavolazzi ed Ellade Bandini e con Adriano Pappalardo, dove accennava a un possibile scherzo da farmi.

Giunto in camera, lessi qualche pagina di un libro, poi spensi la luce rimanendo però sveglio e aspettando… li sentii entrare: il vino che avevano bevuto impediva loro la necessaria attenzione a non fare rumore; quando furono entrati tutti e cinque accesi all’improvviso la luce, dicendo ‘Vi starete chiedendo per quale motivo vi abbia convocato qui a quest’ora della notte…’ : rimasero di merda!”

Rovigo: 12 agosto, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Thomas Lang ospite d'onore del Drum Galà. Manca pochissimo al tanto atteso Drum Galà. Il Festival italiano della batteria e delle percussioni, realizzato in ricordo del batterista rodigino Beppe Lupo. Sabato 12 agosto sul palco di piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, ospite d'onore della nona edizione, sarà Thomas Lang. Lo spettacolo inizierà alle 21 con ingresso gratuito. L'esibizione del musicista austriaco sarà l'evento centrale della manifestazione, che dal 2015 continua a proporre spettacoli di indiscusso spessore e a valorizzare i giovani talenti della musica a Rovigo. L'evento è organizzato dalla Pro Loco di Rovigo, con il sostegno di Avis comunale Rovigo, ASM Set Rovigo, Lanfredini Srl, Autoscuola Rossi, Pasta Fracasso e Banca Veneto Centrale e con il patrocinio del Comune di Rovigo. La manifestazione è nata come riconoscimento a Beppe Lupo, per oltre 50 anni musicista d'esempio per tanti giovani musicisti. Per questo omaggio sono intervenuti autentici fuoriclasse della batteria, da Ellade Bandini, protagonista nell'edizione 2016, a Virgil Donati, Alfredo Golino, Christian Meyer, Riccardo Merlini, Ricky Quagliato, Federico Paulovich e Alessia Mattalia. Thomas Lang è tra i batteristi che nella moderna scena mondiale ha portato a un livello superiore la tecnica applicata alla batteria. Considerato uno dei più grandi batteristi di sempre, Lang oltre che per la sua gigantesca preparazione tecnica, velocità e musicalità, è noto per la sua agilità con i piedi (che utilizza esattamente come le mani) e per la sua esemplare indipendenza di tutti e quattro gli arti. Le collaborazioni di Lang sono di altissimo livello, tra tutte possiamo citare quelle con Paul Gilbert, Robert Fripp, Glenn Hughes, Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Steve Hackett, Boyzone, The Commodores, George Michael, Gianna Nannini, Vienna Art Orchestra, Bonnie Tyler. Lang è anche uno stimato produttore, arrangiatore e compositore, con vari album nella sua discografia. All'evento in piazza Vittorio Emanuele II saranno ospiti anche Riccardo Merlini e Alex Cohen. Il rodigino Merlini, considerato ad oggi il batterista più veloce del mondo (con dimostrazioni video provate a 400 bpm ed oltre), sta diffondendo il suo video didattico "The Killer Speed Secret" venduto in tutto il mondo e libro di futura pubblicazione internazionale. Tiene frequentemente workshop e clinics in tutto il mondo (è reduce da un recente tour clinic negli Stati Uniti); invitato abitualmente a Festival di batteristi internazionali come il Dresdner Drum Festival, Altesia ed altri importanti eventi in tutto il mondo, è già stata confermata la sua partecipazione a Drumeo per il 2024. Cohen, newyorkese, ha pubblicato diversi metodi mondialmente riconosciuti come "innovativi" nell'ambito della batteria moderna. I tre artisti terranno anche una master class di tre giorni a Rovigo all'Europa Palace, che di fatto si concluderà sul palco del Drum Galà; nella stessa sera troverà spazio anche Mattia Principi, una "nuova proposta" scelta dall'interessante vivaio del Conservatorio "F. Venezze" di Rovigo. It's been three years, but Yan Ting "Tina" Li says she still remembers meeting Po Yuk "Peggy" Chan at a Thanksgiving party.

The 45-year-old mother of four says Chan struck her as compassionate and pious and took an instant liking to her.

The two exchanged phone numbers and cultivated a friendship over two years.

That relationship has since ended, with Li accusing Chan of defrauding her out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by forging or arranging for the forging of documents to put a second and, later, a third mortgage on, claiming the mortgages were registered without her knowledge.

Civil court documents filed in Ontario Superior Court show Chan is named in five other civil suits, all filed by members of the Chinese community, alleging that Chan denies the allegations and says the alleged victims were willing participants in a plan to collectively invest in real estate by obtaining high-interest loans through private lenders.

As previously reported by CBC News, the allegations come as title insurance companies a rise in mortgage fraud cases, and lawyers are cautioning homeowners to protect themselves.

In an affidavit, Li alleges Chan invited her for tea or coffee and asked about her Chan learned that she has four kids and has been working to save for her children's university.

She claims Chan told her she owned a brokerage company and could help her obtain a $400,000 loan to buy a property near the University of Waterloo, where they expected to study.

Li says Chan explained that her company could lend her $400,000 interest-free, which Li could offer to a bank as collateral security for a loan and obtain that loan without further mortgaging her home.

In her affidavit, Li alleges that Chan came over in late 2019 to collect documents that she said were needed, including Li's driver's license, which she alleges was not returned for days.

Li claims Chan drove her to various offices to sign documents and told her they needed to open a joint bank; he says the manuscripts were all in English, which she says she does not understand but maintains she trusted Chan.

Li says Chan told her the loan from her brokerage was approved, and a check for the collateral of $330,151.73 was deposited in the joint account within claims; the balance, except for a few hundred dollars, was withdrawn by Chan.

Li says when the pandemic hit a few months later, Chan told her the bank loan was on indefinite hold; it wasn't until spring 2021 that Chan told her the loan was moving ahead again, and Li says Chan asked her to sign more documents.

When Li went to renew the mortgage on her Markham, Ont., home, she was shocked to learn there were two additional mortgages on it; she immediately contacted Chan, who she says told her it was a "mistake" by her company and that she'd have a lawyer discharge the mortgages.

In June 2022, Li says a title search confirmed both mortgages were still in place; one was registered in November 2019 for $400,000 and the other in May 2021 for $392,000. 

In the civil court documents, Li alleges that her signature on the mortgage documents was forged and that she may have been impersonated.

She's filed a police report and is now dealing with the aftermath of these events, including the potential of losing her home.

Li's also received a notice of the power of sale on her home because those two additional mortgages were in default.

Her legal team, which is working on taking steps to have those mortgages deleted, has reviewed the court documents in two cases where plaintiffs claim they first contacted Chan after seeing an advertisement in a Chinese-language publication, say they do not read or speak English, and allege that Chan misrepresented documents.

None of the allegations have been proven in court, but a retiree and two-time cancer survivor claims, like Li, that she developed a friendship with Chan before the alleged fraud. 

Lawyers Richard An with Evremonde Law and Ellad Gersh at Robins Appleby LLP represent Li and other alleged victims of Chan.

Lawyer Ken MacDonald represents two other clients: one who claims they had around $900,000 in mortgages registered and another for $1.15 million, all without their knowledge.

Chan's assets have been frozen since last summer following an application by MacDonald. 

Through her lawyer, Chan denies the allegations. David Myers claims the alleged victims agreed to purchase investment properties with Chan and then sell them for a profit.

Myers claims his client connected the homeowners with private lenders who facilitated mortgages on their homes and alleges the funds would go toward purchasing investments; the market took a turn, profits declined, and they couldn't make the payments on their high-interest loans.

CBC News has not seen any evidence to corroborate those specific claims in the civil cases; she has two properties with her, but she also alleges Chan took money from her mortgage without her knowledge.

Myers says early-stage motions are still being dealt with, including the freezing of Chan's assets, so they have yet to file a defence that maintains Chan did not "target" members of her community.

That is a claim Li's lawyers maintain is false, and they have not presented any evidence for that allegation in any of those cases, according to An and Gersh.

Chan is currently listed as "not authorized to sell" under her mortgage broker license because, as of December 9, 2022, she does not have a sponsoring brokerage.

The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario, which handles licensing for brokers, says it's "reviewing concerns about Chan's conduct" but couldn't reveal more details.

As for Li, she says she's telling her story so that others don't end up in her position.
