Elli Ingram - Love You Really - Review

In a new era of female R&B vocalists with trappy esque beats which have dominated the mainstream by the likes of SZA and FKA Twigs. Elli Ingram has been overlooked. A girl from Brighton who has had to earn her supporters mainly through her following on soundcloud, which is where a huge proportion of artists are able to use to get people to hear their music. The biggest of these being the Weeknd, who released his firsts on it for free and is now probably in the top 5 biggest artists in the world at the moment.

Ingram's breakthrough was a cover of Kendrick Lamar's song 'Poetic Justice' which featured Drake. Her powerful punchy rendition of the song, which she turned into her own gained her many plaudits. Most notable the Drum and Bass generals Chase and Status, who put her on their album and followed up with her going on their tour after the release of their album 'Brand New Machine'. Elli also made progression by releasing the ep 'Sober' in 2014 and the 'Doghouse' in 2015 but where she has really made her mark is the long awaited album 'Love You Really'.

The soulful, Amy Winehouse sorta album vindicates her fans long awaited wait for the album. The album has absolute bangers! The third track on the album 'sweet and sour' a soulful up tempo love song which makes you start clicking your fingers subconsciously, with the production perfect in emphasising the different tempos of the song which fluctuate throughout. Ellis battle with love is displayed in sleeping pill with the hard-hitting first line which could be seen to be similar to a Kate Nash line not a soul singer 'I set my heart free some sweet fuckery to tell me gently i'm not what you needed', she isn't just the normal new era female vocalist she has something edgy and angry in her tone which I believe Is personified in that opening line which she almost raps instead of sings. The changing of tones is illustrated too with an Adeleish ballad 'Stone Cold', making the album complete with a mixture of her aggressive and vibrant attack of the music with a steady theme of love and her pain she has received from it. My favourite song on the album which is one of the singles released 'table for two' personifies Ellis sound with a catchy hook and a painful love song 'sat staring at your phone I know we should have stayed at home', the changing tones work perfectly and remain stuck in your head for weeks to come. Even if I haven't been able to entice you to listen to the album, give this song a quick listen and you will understand.

Sadly, I think this will stay a hidden gem but hopefully I will be proved wrong. 8/10
