When Daisuke was a little kid:
Emiko: Why are there tiny hand prints on the ceiling?
Kosuke, holding Daisuke, both with dried paint on their clothes, hands, and faces:
Kosuke, looking at Daisuke: Why are there tiny hand prints?
Daisuke, holding up his paint covered hands: 'Cause I h've tiny hands!
Kosuke, looking back to Emiko: Because Daisuke has tiny hands.

Emikosuke and Ring?
Pacing around the room, Kosuke quickly glanced at the time.
2:00 PM
Emiko had told him that she would be here in a half hour.
Not to mention of all days, today was the day that he'd propose to her.
Sighing in relief as he felt the box in his pocket, the man looked at door once more.
Hearing the door open, Kosuke immediately rushed over only to trip over his own two feet.
"…Are you alright?"
Falling onto his back, he laughed nervously as Emiko helped him up.
"Sorry about that, Emiko-san."
Out of the corner of his eye, Kosuke could see the box that had fallen out. Following his line of sight, she spoke. "Is that..." "...I ruined the surprise." Emikp slowly picked up the box and handed it over to him with a smile, "It's fine, I still want to hear it." "Emiko-san, will you marry me?" After hearing those words, she smiled brightly. "Of course!"

" even the waves of fate can break upon the shores of will. " she says cryptically as she carefully chops up some fruits and veggies for an after school snack for the youngest Niwa. a few pieces of celery finding its way to With to keep the little rabbit from poking his nose near the cutting board. a knowing look in her eyes though she refuses to elaborate any further at this time.
" anything interesting happen today? Emiko was running me ragged trying to get the shopping done for dinner tonight and I could use some exciting gossip! "

"Are you... awake...?" She's sitting on her bed, knees pulled up to her chest, not looking at anything as her head is resting against her knees. Waiting for a response while trying to ease her anxiety.
"Yeah. What's up?" Even now, his voice was like a comfort. Something to ground her while her emotions flew high, a constant in her life. "Can't sleep?"
"I... had another nightmare. About Zwei Wing, and Kanade-san." Tatsuki uncurls herself to pull at the shirt of her pyjamas, staring at the scar on her chest. "The day I got this scar... when I nearly died."
Silence. It wasn't something the two of them liked remembering, the day they were impaled by fragments of whatever metal Kanade was wearing. There were fragments so close to their heart that couldn't be removed.
"...I'm scared of going back." She admits, finally getting out of bed and heading to her window. The Niwa Mansion really had a good view, didn't it? At least, in her opinion. She... never looked out the window much when she was younger. Shaking her head a little, she put a hand to said window.
"I'm scared of going back to all the bullying. All the harassment. I took all those assignments so I could be useful to my class... But now I'm being shunted off to a different class for no reason. Maybe because that class has more openings..." Or maybe because of her. "I'm scared."
"You're terrified." He corrects. "Terrified because you think they hate you. That they want you dead, just like those back home do. You still try to help, no matter the cost to yourself. All those sleepless nights, all the anxiety... You push yourself too hard."
"But if I don't..." The words remain unspoken, but they both know what she means.
If I don't, they'll find more reason to bully me. To hate me. To throw stones at my house, call me a murderer. Call me a thief.
".....I don't want to go back, but I know I can't stay here forever." She leans against the window, still staring out it. "I don't want the torment to continue. I don't want to go back to all of that..."
"You've grown since you first got here. Trying to not burden anyone and take on everything by yourself because you wanted to seem useful to someone who can ask for help, even so miniscule as to ask Daisuke if you could live with him." There's a soft laugh at that. "I was proud of you, you know? You did all of that on your own. I didn't need to push you to ask. Though you ate so much I think Emiko nearly passed out."
"I was hungry!" Tatsuki protests. "...A-and anyway, she said I could eat all I liked since I looked hungry..." There she was, looking at nothing because of how shy she felt at the moment.
"I was teasing you."
".....Do you want to go back home, Dark?" She asks after a moment. There's silence between them until he sighs.
"I've contemplated destroying the Time Lock so you didn't have to. Planned to, actually. You can thank the other me for knocking some sense into my hard head." He admits. "It's more of what you want, Tatsuki. Do you want to go back, or remain here?"
She closes her eyes. He wanted to destroy the item that brought them there, just so she didn't have to go back. A nice thought, but...
"I'm glad he did. I don't think I could've lived with myself if you went through with your idea." Tatsuki admits before closing her eyes. It doesn't take long for her to transform, Dark's appearance overtaking her own. A hand rubs at his-- her left arm.
"Tatsuki-"
"Thank you for changing your mind." She smiles, just a little. "I don't think I can sleep any more tonight. Do you... want to go make something? Valentine's day is coming up."
"That's for girls to give guys chocolate. I wouldn't mind some."
"I'm not giving out lousy chocolate this year. I'm going to make something good." She rolls up her sleeves. "Baked goods are just as good, if not better, than chocolate! That's what I'm giving this year!"
"Tatsuki, the tradition-"
"Screw tradition, we can bake!" And she leaves her room to go bake in the midddle of the night.

One of the things that’s been striking to me on my D.N.Angel re-read - not that I hadn’t noticed it before, per se, but it’s hitting me in a new way - is that Emiko is portrayed as incredibly, effusively complimentary of Daisuke, but within a very specific framework.
Like, check out the very first scene of them we see:
Tumblr media
Emiko: Welcome home, Daisuke-chan! You got full points again today! Mom is really happy - good job, Daisuke!
She’s literally smothering him in compliments and affection. And, on the surface, this is great! So many parents don’t properly show appreciation to their kids, or give them enough positive feedback when they do well at something. Emiko - at least, until you start looking closer - certainly can’t be accused of that.
I think that’s why, unlike someone like Satoshi’s dad, Emiko is not always seen as a Bad Parent. Because how can she be, when she’s so very loving towards her son? When she covers him with hugs and affectionate nicknames and praise the second he walks through the door? Like, right from the first chapter, practically every other word out of her mouth is a compliment:
Tumblr media
Emiko: Aw, you’re so handsome*. <3 Exactly like your father!
Daisuke: I’m not talking about that!
Tumblr media
Emiko: It’s your long-awaited debut, so you have to dress up! You look so handsome in anything that Mommy doesn’t know what to make you wear!*
Tumblr media
Emiko: You really stole it and returned! That’s my Daisuke-chan!
Except. Except, except, except.
There are really only two things she compliments him on - his looks, and his skills as a Phantom Thief. *And if we want to be precise, those aren’t even his looks in that particular scene - they’re Dark’s. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she thinks the actual Daisuke is handsome too, but notably there’s a scene a few chapters later where she’s dressing him up for a “date” with Risa (ignoring his protests that he doesn’t like the clothes and thinks they’re “too flashy”, btw), and she doesn’t gush about his looks then. Wanna know what she does say, though?
Tumblr media
Emiko: How embarrassing, Daisuke. Even when you fall, you have to fall like a Phantom Thief... gracefully and elegantly! Didn’t Mommy always tell you that?
Oof.
Like, this is played for comedy, obviously, and I wouldn’t take it too seriously except for the fact that it’s part of a larger pattern of how she consistently acts towards him. She lovebombs him with hugs and compliments and over-the-top cutesy affection when he’s playing the Phantom Thief role she wants, compliments him on how handsome he is when she’s dressing him up in clothes he doesn’t like and (at least in that particular scene) he's very literally wearing someone else’s face, but when he deviates from that image in even minor ways, she turns hyper-critical.
This gets slightly better later on - for example, in the SHoT arc, she’s quite supportive of his role in the school play:
Tumblr media
Emiko: Dai-chan is so lucky! Good luck, Dai-chan! <3 Mommy is going to talk about it so much!
Even at that point though, her praising him outside of Phantom Thievery is arguably the exception rather than the rule (I’d have to double-check to be sure if I re-read the full series), but in the earlier chapters? It’s so incredibly blatant and so bad. And it feels particularly relevant when we see how incredibly low Daisuke’s image of himself is:
Tumblr media
Daisuke: Dumb and clumsy, always boring myself to death... This was my first step in attempting to change myself!
Of course, it’s extremely common for teenagers to have insecurities - it would be pretty dang unusual to find one who didn’t - but it’s striking to me just how harshly Daisuke talks about himself here. (And it’s kind of hard not to connect the fact that he specifically berates himself for being clumsy with the fact that A Certain Someone tells him that even when he trips and falls, he needs to do it “like a Phantom Thief, gracefully and elegantly!”)
Dark hasn’t even showed up yet at this point, so this isn’t even about his inferiority complex - in fact, I’d argue that just grew out of issues in Daisuke’s self-image which already existed. When Dark does show up, he tries to use these insecurities to his advantage, trying to convince Daisuke to merge with him because he basically wants to be a different person anyway:
Tumblr media
Dark: But the one Risa said was cool wasn’t Daisuke, but was me, Dark - right? Let’s just become one, Daisuke. Turning yourself into someone different... Didn’t you always want that?
And Daisuke, on some level, seems to actually agree with this. Not to the point of agreeing to merge with Dark then and there (thankfully!), but he seems to accept the basic point that he would be cooler and more worthwhile if he was a different person. (Am I still incredibly frustrated about what a great character arc this could have made for, and how Daisuke’s temptation to merge with Dark could have represented the risk of him giving in to those insecurities, leading him to grow and ultimately realize that he never needed to be a different person, except that the series never actually lets him have that growth? Oh good lord, yes.)
And so that no one misunderstands me here, I don’t want anyone to think I’m saying “Aha, this is entirely because of his mom!”, because insecurity is more complicated than that, and I think it would be simplistic to put this entirely on one particular factor. But it’s interesting to note that on the face of it, there’s no real reason for Daisuke to hate himself this much. He seems a bit distant from his friends (for example, he rarely talks to Saehara or anyone else about what’s bothering him - even when it’s something he could talk about, like romantic woes), but he’s clearly well-liked by his peers and they’re typically very friendly towards him. Risa turns him down, but we explicitly see her friends acting surprised by this and saying he’s cute, so he’s clearly not considered unattractive by girls in general. I’m pretty sure we’re expressly told at one point that his grades aren’t great but aren’t terrible either, and of course on top of that he has incredible skills that other kids his age don’t.
And then you have his loving family at home (minus the absentee father, to begin with, and I certainly think that plays its role in his confidence issues, but I’d have to write an entirely separate post on that), with his mom showering him in compliments, but there’s a stark contrast between all those compliments and how little they seem to have actually given him solid self-esteem. And you can’t help but wonder if that’s, at least in part, because after a certain point those compliments ring hollow. Emiko compliments Daisuke for doing what she wants. Emiko compliments Daisuke for being a model product of her training. Emiko compliments the way Daisuke looks when she gets to dress him up like a little doll (nevermind if he actually likes how he looks, that’s irrelevant). Emiko compliments Daisuke when he fulfills the perfect little Phantom Thief image she’s had of him since literally before he was born.
But how much does she actually appreciate what she sees outside that context? How many compliments does she dole out when Daisuke is simply being himself?

smth feels validating abt sugisaki saying that part of dnangel was about trying to be positive even in difficult circumstances or that daisuke was someone doing his best amidst the sense of his own anxiety and loneliness because like... it's there. he is more of a lonely character at heart than he isn't; his massive loser rep is played off for jokes superficially, but anybody taking it seriously can see how daisuke for the most part, despite his 'cuteness,' despite his care, his kindness, or his sincerity, actually... really, legitimately doesn't have very many friends, much less ones that he can speak comfortably and freely with, despite such easygoing confidence and a glowing character being something he's always wished for.
in a lot of official art, daisuke, when he isn't in a sunny light, is within something akin to dark's heart; his own heart, a dim, hungry, and empty place, and you can't really separate that from him. you can't take away the niwa's phantom thief desire, not even from daisuke. even though he has an extremely supportive and loving family, everyone's also constantly focused and bearing down on daisuke for his duty as 'dark,' to the point that daisuke even gets readily stressed out and sick of it- there's a drama cd portion where he storms into his room shouting 'dark, dark, that's all anyone ever talks about! which is comparable to baku's dream-world creating a false daiki and emiko (daisuke's grandfather and mother) based off of daisuke's own legitimate insecurities: they call him worthless and inept as a phantom thief which is enough to bring him to tears, but declaring that he's nothing without dark makes him stop, because for daisuke, who's always been relying on dark, it feels entirely true.
all of this brings anybody to the fact that dark does have a hold on practically the entirety of daisuke's existence. it's his curse and comfort and his secret, the other self that he can't separate from; baku describes both of their existences as a nightmare (and i've talked at length about dark's circumstances before,) but even that nightmare is still one wherein dark and daisuke both need each other. idk how many people can look at daisuke and realize that there really are some massive hollows in his person; his insecurity can run very deep, he's somewhat uncertain and aimless outside of anything that isn't his family 'destiny,' but the matter of the fact is that daisuke, even if he sometimes needs a little outside encouragement, is still someone who can keep bringing himself to step forward and keep moving despite it all. when the going gets rough it's daisuke who stands his ground and asks what he can, or what he should do to start making a difference. the thesis of his (and to a similar extent, dark's,) character has never been raw strength or genius talent or shounen-esque glory and ambition or whatever - it's about someone doing whatever they can in the moment to make things better even when things are turning into a struggle. it's dark deciding for himself that he didn't like the hikari's careless destruction of the arts and deciding to steal them in order to preserve them. it's daisuke deciding for himself that he wouldn't leave hiwatari behind even if there families were at odds with each other.
it's all this!

"Do you like them?"
Tatsuki stares at the vase of flowers on her desk, which had been arranged in a way that would be beautifully presented.
"We saw you weren't doing so well, so we figured you might be cheered up with flowers! None of us really knew what you liked, so we just got one of each flower!"
Words marred her desk for a moment. A flash of the words Thief, Murderer and Die! were there before she blinked and they were gone. The vase had, momentarily, become one with a chrysanthemum flower instead of the beautiful flower arrangement it had been before returning to the present.
"What's wrong? You're pale. Are you sick?" The girl to her left reached out to put her hand on Tatsuki's forehead.
A flash. The uniform of Azumano Middle School, in a different colour. The girl replaced by one of her tormenters, reaching out to grab her hair. Tatsuki backed off almost instantly, eyes wide with fear.
"Are you okay, Hinata-chan?"
"She's... No, she isn't. Look at her. She's... Hinata-chan, what's wrong? Is something bothering you?"
Tatsuki's hands come to her face, tears falling without end. With a loud scream, she grabs her bag and runs out of the classroom. The girls chase after, but can't catch up.
"Hinata-chan!" They shout, trying to catch her attention. But she's already so far gone. The three girls look at each other.
"...When did Hinata-chan learn to run so fast?" One of them asked.
"She can barely keep up most of the time... Maybe she just doesn't want to be noticed?" Another thought, tapping her chin.
"That could be it. Maybe we should visit her after school- Oh! Isn't she living with Niwa-san? We could ask him if we can visit. I saw them walking to school together once." The third said.
"She could be. Let's ask Niwa-san after school."
Tumblr media
The moment she was far enough away, she'd manifested Dark's wings forcibly to fly herself home. No one had seen, thankfully, so she'd been able to get home without causing a spectacle.
Though it had hurt like hell, but she knew what the cost was when she'd first taken flight. She never really used any other door but the front one, but she'd decided not to take the main entrance this time.
(Emiko would probably not like having to reset all the traps for when Daisuke got home...)
Taking off her shoes after entering the mansion, Tatsuki set them with the others and walked over to the sofa before basically collapsing on it and starting to sob.
"Tatsuki, they were just trying to cheer you up..." Dark's voice was gentle, but still firm. She knew that, she knew... but still...
"....I couldn't help but think back to everything." She said between sobs. "To all the hell I was going through before I ended up sent back in time..."
"You've grown so much stronger since the first day we arrived. You took a chance with Daisuke, took a chance with the other me, and you've gained what you haven't had for years."
"....A family." She whispered, in Dark's voice. "We have a family."
"You'll be okay." Tatsuki honestly wishes she could hug him and just rest against him until she fell asleep. And with Daisuke still at school for an undetermined amount of time (as she didn't know what time it was right now), she couldn't bother him.
"We'll be okay." She finally sits up, staring at the wall for a moment before going to go upstairs to her room and change. It takes her barely any time to do so, and she lets herself transform once she's done changing her clothes.
"I'm... going to try and get some more sleep." The bed was safe, warm and she could sleep until Daisuke got home. As her head hit the pillow, she closed her eyes.
"I won't stop you this time." Dark sighed, but she knew he was smiling. "I'll be around when you wake up, so if you need me, I'll be there."
"...Thanks."
It was slow, but she soon drifted off to sleep, comforted by the thought of not being alone when she woke up.
