ok so after having a few days to digest 3x05, I have a theory of where things are going. echo-centric rambling under the cut lol

so after 3x05, I saw a bunch of people claiming that it had to be jones in max’s body after he healed him. ngl I was very resistant to this theory bc I just loathe body swap plots agfdfhgjkfgdgfdk. but also nothing had felt particularly un-max like to me in his interactions after being healed. I mean, yes, I see the point being made of max’s responses to liz being extremely vague during their convo in the cave, but his reactions to liz screamed max to me. look at his eyes. there’s clearly some guilt when liz says, “in a moment where I had to choose, I chose you.” there’s a warmth there that I can’t imagine jones can replicate given he has no feelings towards liz. then there’s max’s reaction to finding maria unconscious at his place. that also screamed max to me as jones probably isn’t aware of maria’s existence, and even if he were I can’t imagine him having this amount of concern for her.

so thinking about this, I had successfully comforted myself and felt confident we weren’t getting a body swap. since we haven’t been getting weekly promos this year, I decided to look at the available summaries to get an idea of what was coming up.

3x06 “Bitter Sweet Symphony”

Max investigates the break-in meanwhile, Alex continues his research. Rosa and Isobel team up, and Liz makes a shocking discovery.

now, I saw this summary before 3x05 aired, so my initial expectation was that this was going to be liz learning about jones. since she became aware of him due to his healing max in 3x05, that can’t be the case lol. BUT clearly this discovery has to be jones related because the only other big arc atm is trying to stop maria’s death vision. and then...

3x07 “Goodnight Elizabeth“

Liz’s plan does not go as expected, putting herself, Isobel and Michael in danger. Meanwhile, Eduardo confides in Alex.

so... clearly liz had some plan against jones and she wasn’t prepared for how powerful he is. and if jones is in the pod, like 3x05 would want us to believe, how would that be possible?

so this made me re-evaluate the potential of a body swap. but, as I said, I was struggling to buy this theory bc he still felt very max to me after being healed.

so, I discussed this ep with a few friends. we had noticed an emphasis on noah this season, which I had pinpointed as important due to the fact that he hadn’t been acknowledged at all last season outside of isobel’s abortion plot. I was thinking more along the lines of the potential for a discussion of how traumatic this betrayal was to isobel, since so far the handling of that reveal in 1x11 has felt pretty trauma porn-esque to me. but one of my friends felt that it had to be foreshadowing. and the more I thought about it, the more I agreed. in 3x02, michael threw noah in isobel’s face as an explanation that they can’t trust jones. in 3x05, jones knew to pick at that wound to make isobel doubt herself, so she would be more willing to trust him. s1 established the ability that an alien can have their consciousness in someone else’s body. it would make sense that this ability is connected to physical touch.

so... I don’t think max and jones have switched consciousness. I think both jones and max’s consciousness are in max’s body. but, as noah would take over isobel’s body when she would get triggered and black out, I think jones will be a bit more aggressive in taking control over from max.

now I’ve been thinking since 3x03 that we would have to have a scene where jones tries to pass himself off as max and liz sees thru the performance. this thread shows a scene that is reportedly in 3x06. it’s pretty clearly jones with liz, as the look he’s giving her in the second tweet.... there’s just no way that’s max lol.

now my theory of what’s going to happen in 3x07 kinda relies on this interview excerpt from jeanine lol

INTERVIEWER: Jeanine, for Liz how do you think she’ll be with Max this season? Do you think she’ll be able to forgive everything that went down with the lab?

JM: I just want to tell you. [Laughs] But that would be spoiling the fun of watching I assume. I guess what I’ll say is so much of her life has been decided for her. She is the answer to the Earth’s need for a protector and steward So much of her own opinions on it haven’t been taken into account yet. This is really the season where she just needs to for herself make the decision to take on this huge responsibility and that it feel like what makes most sense for her and her life.

So quickly she starts finding her way back. I love that she’s not a perfect protagonist. No one is perfect. No one is squeaky clean. She loves the complication. She loves that her life is so big and messy and loaded. She has huge grounding forces.

For her it’s Max and it’s Roswell and it’s her community. She finds her way back to a very big messy situation with Jones and falls into that rhythm really fast and starts making choices on where she wants to… I’ll say this, by the end of the season she’s made a decision that’s permanent. Ok, that’s it. [Laughs]

INTERVIEWER: I mean it would be a great exclusive, so if you want to just tell me everything go right ahead! [Laughs]

JM: Just so you know. It’s my favorite Liz and Max season. It really is the one where they make their final decision with each other. That’s it, because if I say another thing I’m going to get in trouble. [Laughs]

if I’m being honest, so far this season, I’ve felt pretty underwhelmed on the echo front. but these excerpts heavily imply a marriage proposal imo. so I started wondering how the hell are we going to get from this 3x05 scene, where they both seem fairly disinterested in getting back together, to a proposal in the span of 8 episodes? we need huge developments in the next few episodes for that step to feel organic when it happens (also the finale is titled “Never Let You Go” so yeah. yeah. it’s happening lol)

so... maybe this is just me being too hopeful lol, but a big development for them would be liz being able to pull max back out when jones is the one conscious in his body. if we look at the 3x07 summary up above again, it’s clear liz is fearing for her life in this situation with jones. I can’t find the interview where I saw it but iirc I’ve seen jeanine refer to liz as a tether for max, and her choosing that word in particular makes me think that liz would have to be able to reach max when no one else is able to. (I’ve also held the thought that liz helps ground max since early season 1 as suggested by max saying, “ever since I healed you, I’ve felt wrong, like there’s a– like there’s a tornado inside me, and I can’t fight it and I can’t run from it, except when I’m with you.” it’d be nice for canon to validate that.)

so, my theory: I think seeing jones in max’s body is going to make liz terrified at the prospect of losing him again. I think(/hope) liz is going to feel cornered, and in a last-ditch effort of desperation, give some sort of romantic speech that will bring max back out. and then they’ll both be so relieved that the other is okay, that there goes any willingness to stay apart.

Ok so I know that Tyler, Amber, Trevino, and Heather all have ten episode contracts and so they will each be missing from three episodes. Tyler was missing from 3x04 Walk on the Ocean. And it got me wondering what other episodes will they be missing. Though I believe they are all in the last big three finale episodes.

So this is me guessing with a few websites, Tumblr, Spoilertv, Wiki, and IMDB. Which I know not really reliable, but what can you do.

So the upcoming episodes synopsis and titles are... I remember that the titles of the episodes are based on song titles.

3x05: Killing Me Softly With His Song Liz (Jeanine Mason) makes the choice to lie to Heath (guest star Steven Krueger). Maria (Heather Hemmens) and Rosa (Amber Midthunder) stand up to Jordan (guest star Michael Grant Terry) meanwhile Isobel (Lily Cowles) does some digging into Jones (Nathan Dean). Also starring Michael Vlamis and Michael Trevino.

3x06: Bitter Sweet Symphony Max (Nathan Dean) investigates the break-in meanwhile, Alex (Tyler Blackburn) continues his research. Amber according to IMDB, though who knows there I believe is missing the same eps as Trevino. Ep 8: Free Your Mind, ep10: Angles of Silences, and ep 11: 2 Become 1, perhaps Rosa and Kyle are off on some sibling thing together.

Heather from what I can tell is not in ep 7: Goodnight Elizabeth, ep 8: FYM, which seems odd because that episode title seems perfect for her storyline for this season. Like I said, it’s IMDB, can’t trust them. And then it says she isn’t in ep 10: AOS and ep 11: 2B1. So who know cause she can’t be missing from four episodes because she has a ten episode contract like the others.

Trevino will probably miss ep 8: FYM, ep 10: AOS, and ep 11: 2B1 according to IMDB, but can’t trust that. I doubt that they are killing off Kyle, I can’t see the show killing off a main like that, especially since he’s shown he’s valuable to the story and show. So unless Trevino wants out, I would hope and assume that he’s not going to become the big victim of the mystery murder plot.

Tyler wasn’t in ep 4: Walk On the Ocean, even though I think IMDB said he would be. They aren’t to be trusted. I’m guessing he’s not in ep 5: Killing Me With His Song, since they don’t mention his name as also stars. And going off IMDB here that he might not be in ep 11: 2B1.

Does anyone else know anything different or any other information?

Right, I am officially going dark for the evening!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH I AM SO HYPE FOR THIS EP I CANNOT WAIT. I’m seriously like a little kid on Christmas Eve right now.
