Sibling J has just confidently announced that in his opinion, Van Buren isn't obscure media within the Fallout community at large. More specifically, he said that he believes the majority of the 'online fandom' (by which he's referring to us over here on Tumblr) would recognise Van Buren-only factions by name.

I already know this is going to be biased as all hell, especially coming from my blog of all places, but I thought it might get a bit of a general picture?

I love doing a good creature and, since I'm a Fallout fan who loves a good cyberdog, I decided to take a shot at the CBR-S units from the cancelled Fallout Van Buren (slightly recycling some of my old Hounds of Tindalos into the mix while I was grabbing different 'robot dogs' for inspiration - mostly Friender from Casshern, since you can't go wrong with the OG, but AMEE from Red Planet and BigDog from real life as well). I liked the lineless roughs so much that I had to add them in as well, along with the different 'alt' colors I ended up with along the way.

I just realized something I can’t believe I forgot to bring up when I discussed Harold’s vault in-depth a while back… if you haven’t seen it, you can read it here, but a big part of my analysis revolves around the character Diana, who took over Harold’s vault so she could pretend to be a nature god over the exclusively teenager-and-under inhabitants, when in actuality she was a human brain connected to a computer network.

The Van Buren design documents included a picture of what Diana would look like as she projected her “goddess” image to her cult, the Twin Mothers, obviously it’s just an edited photo as digital concept art and not meant to be the final design, but it gives us an idea of what the designers were going for:

Doesn’t the way she’s integrated into the trees remind you of something?

Ironically, when Harold’s mutation caused him to become rooted to the ground and create new life in the wasteland, he became the nature god that Diana so desperately wanted to be, except Harold was trapped in his state and had no desire to be worshipped!

It’s such a weirdly convenient bit of thematic paralleling that I can’t help but wonder if a Bethesda writer did this on purpose, except if that was what they were going for, wouldn’t they have had Harold reference this part of Van Buren to canonize it? I’m gonna have to chalk this up to a freak coincidence.

I personally feel that if Bethesda gave Obsidian more time then New Vegas would've been a lot more like Van Buren

Like there's already a lot of things in relation to Van Buren in New Vegas such as The Legion, taking place in Nevada, Joshua Graham, the Chinese stealth suits in Hoover Dam

While I don't think it would've been exactly like how Van Buren was intended I definitely think there would've been more things in relation to Van Buren as there were a lot of factions in Van Buren that didn't make it into New Vegas such as The Cult of Blucifer or The Children of Calypso
