What is social gaming?

Social gaming is a term for games played on social networking services such as Facebook, also defined as online games that enable people to interact, build and maintain friendships (Dempsey 2017). The game allows players to experience the different roles of the character. Social gaming/ video gaming is multi-player; it requires a few players at the same time and building a team. It has the most popular games played in the world. The first cross-platform "Facebook-to-Mobile" social network game was developed in 2011 by a Finnish company Star Arcade (Consumer Lab 2020).

What is the gaming community?

Gaming community refers to a large number of online users that are centered on interaction via the game. Every successful social game has a community for people to share experiences and exchange information; it can be blogs, videos, or social media posts. For example, YouTube video related to gaming allows players to interact with views on the online gaming community.

Gaming during covid-19

Covid-19 crisis has affected our lives in many ways, including how we spend our time dealing with unprecedented circumstances. During the Covid-19 pandemic, everyone is required to practice social distancing, and the physical engagement with friends is declined. To maintain the interaction with friends, many people start to play social games. Gaming is typically an at-home activity, and a steady stream of headlines has shown that it is flourishing during the pandemic. According to Hall (2020), Covid-19 lockdowns have boosted user engagement with video games and esports; revenues for many gaming companies and platforms have increased during this time. The biggest market by revenue is Asia-Pacific, with almost 50 % of the games market by value. Barr & Copeland-Stewart (2021) stated 71.3 % of respondents reported that their time playing video games had changed during the Covid-19 pandemic, and 63.1% mentioned that the types of games they play had changed. From the survey, playing video games has positively affected players' perceived well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic. It provides an enjoyable means of maintaining social contact and a stress-relieving and mentally stimulating escape from the effects of lockdown.

Farm Ville is a game that allows players to enhance engagement with friends and family.
