I hope the people who are saying ‘Aiden Gallagher would’ve been better!’ know that a) no, he wouldn’t have because he can’t save the terrible writing and direction and b) FERDIA SHAW WAS NOT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THIS MOVIE! HE TRIED HIS FREAKING BEST WITH WHAT HE WAS GIVEN! He was also really good considering he was given shit to work with. I think we need to appreciate this kid more because he clearly appreciated the source material more than the people who made the movie did.

I think Ferdia Shaw would have been brilliant as a tired Artemis Fowl. Like, play up the boredom in any situation to 200%, every line delivered with a sigh and a head roll.

Nothing impresses him, and he gives off the feeling of an old soul who’s seen it all. Holly breaks out of her cell, Mulch burrows through a wall or something, and Artemis just nods and calmly changes his plan while Butler freaks out.

Not totally canon, but that would be a fun dynamic, and perhaps easier to play?

I feel absolutely terrible for Lara McDonnell and Ferdia Shaw. There's a whole lot wrong with the movie, but ultimately it's not their fault, and objectively they're good actors. It's just that Kenneth Branagh created problematic roles for them and the adults that should have explained the ethical problems with the casting choices didn't sit them down and do that. I will criticize Disney, and I will say that the adult white actors should have objected to the white washing, maybe not even participated in the movie. However, I will fight anyone who holds the kids to an equal level of responsibility.

Worst of 2020 Movies #2: Artemis Fowl

A beloved adaptation of a novel series is not the easiest thing to pull off.

For every Harry Potter we have an Eragon.

Every Hunger Games is an I am Number Four.

And every goosebumps which is a beloved children’s book series, there is something far worse.

The saga of Artemis Fowl, the book series involving a kid supervillain genius trying to find The treasures of the world along with his faithful Butler companion including legendary fairies and other mythical creatures.

The book series is beloved and of course everybody wanted to see it translated onto the big screen.

After 15 years of development we finally saw that.

Via an original take involving his dad being kidnapped and him having to go find the clues needed to Free him.

But one thing is certain this is no Artemis fowl sure it may have the same characters stylized Lore and world building. But is lifeless and just about every other fashion.

Even with a great lead such as Ferdia Shaw nothing could have saved this.

And it’s a shame because the source material is definitely beloved in the same level as the aforementioned books that did become great films.

SUM 22: fairies dwarfs and an Irish genius aren’t any match for a lifeless heap of an adaptation.
