Details of their findings were published in the journal Nature Communications on March 7, 2024. Spintronic devices, represented by magnetic random access memory (MRAM), utilize the magnetization direction of ferromagnetic materials to memorize information. Because of their non-volatility and low energy consumption, spintronic devices will likely play a pivotal role in future information storage components.

Room-temperature long-range ferromagnetic order realized in a confined molecular monolayer
How can we manipulate intermolecular exchange interaction to achieve long-range spin ordering? The answer to this question is of great importance in understanding and modulating magnetic behavior at the microscopic scale and in developing new macroscopic magnetic materials and devices. However, temperature and environment play a decisive role in molecular magnetic behavior and spin ordering. At high temperatures, thermal uplift disrupts the spin ordering and disables intermolecular exchange interactions. According to the Mermin-Wagner theory prediction, there is no long-range spontaneous magnetic ordering in two-dimensional systems. Therefore, realizing two-dimensional room-temperature ferromagnetic molecular materials still remains to be a challenge in this field. If solved, it will be vital not only for a fundamental understanding of the nature of magnetism but also for opening new avenues towards a new magnetic material platform.

Y'know, strangely, this is just one of those ships that I have like... no thoughts on at all? I guess it just didn't occur to me to see it as one or register that it was even a thing. Like I know Monet made the one "oh? is it a date?" flirty comment and I may attribute this to my irl inability to notice people flirting but I just literally never thought about this during my speed read-through last year. I'll be curious to see if I interpret anything differently when I make my way back up to PH this time around! So like I'm not even going to say neutral for now so much as "obliviously unaware that this is a thing that could even remotely happen" - no stance yet.
