Before telling people to "just search on DuckDuckGo," ask yourself what's to prevent them from clicking the wrong link, falling down a misinformation rabbithole, and ending up radicalized by far right conspiracy theories.

Remember, the average person does not know the dog whistles and red flags.

This is why I generally avoid telling people to "just search for it," and instead keep a list of people, books, podcasts, and other resources I trust on hand to recommend.

Never forget that "do your own research" is literally what the far right conspiracy theorists tell curious and questioning people, because they know full well that it's an effective way to send them down the pipeline.

A little hope in these dark times

I have previously talked about the token "Good Jews" that I know. One of them is dear to me so whenever they share something that is blatantly false I will then reach out. Each time they are receptive and delete the offending post and it allows us to have a conversation. In each instance they go "Oh, I didn't know that." That's the important part. They're Jewish, but they didn't know better. This friend was born into a Jewish family, went through all the standard Reform milestones, but after 13 they stopped engaging. Being Jewish became a tertiary thing for them and did not necessarily matter. As such they did not learn about the history of our people, the actions taken against us, and other major events outside of what they learned through high school and from their social circle (of which is mainly made of goys, so it's wild they take Jewish history from non-Jews). How do I know this? In our most recent exchange they shared something from IG that stated the persecution of Jews only happened in the West (read: Wester European Christian majority countries and the USA) and never is Muslim countries. I reached out and said this is demonstrably false and referred them to the Shiraz incident(s) that happened in the late 19th and early 20th century. They tried to double down and imply that the persecution that occurred in these pogroms was somehow exported to Iran from the USA at this time. So of course I gave examples of persecution prior to the colonist arriving in the USA. The response? "Oh...this is deeper than I thought." And they further admitted they had only a basic understanding of Jewish history that wouldn't even fulfill a 101 course. So it looks like they are finally grasping that the posts they are sharing from goy on Jewish history and events are in fact wrong and they need to become educated on their people's actual history. My fingers are crossed that this will actually happen and they won't fall back into being a token and share misinformation. And as always, this is my own personal experience and interactions. I'm not saying this is true for all tokens, this is for one particular instance with someone I care for.

I just saw another post about this so this is a public service annoucement.

Stop watering your orchid with ice!

Take that tag and chuck it in the garbage! Phalaenopsis orchids are tropical and will slowly suffer when treated this way.

Phal Orchids are incredibly easy to take care of, the problem is all the purposeful misinformation.

To water your orchid, soak the plant in a sink of room temp water for 15-30 min about once a week then shake the water off. If the moss/bark is still damp between waterings leave it until the moss/bark dries. Be careful to not get the leaves or center (crown) of the plant wet, remove the water from the leaves with a paper towel if you do by accident.

Context and Dispelling Misinformation

There was a vaguepost shared within the cp77 fandom by another person and it really needs some context and clarification. This is the only time I will talk about this and after I share this, I am moving on with my life and not returning to it.

I am going to say this first: do not use this a reason to attack others. This is not drama or discourse and once I share this, I will be moving on and not adding more to it. Do not take this as an attack or an attempt to stir up shit, because it is not in any way, shape or form. All this is, is to clarify a vaguepost that concerns me and other people who have the same concern as me.

This vaguepost was directed towards me and a post that I had made in a small, private server consisting of people I considered to be my friends. The basic context of this is; I made a post expressing my feelings of loneliness and isolation and it was completely misconstrued and then vague-posted about in a very invalidating and hurtful way. The post in question invalidates all the other people who have also expressed their feelings of being left out and unwanted before. Because I am not the only person who has talked about feeling like they don't belong in the fandom. Are all of those people 'whiny asses' too? (Check alt text for description of images)

My post had absolutely nothing to do with this person. I did not mention them, I did not refer to them, I was only expressing something that I had been worrying about in a channel dedicated specifically to offering support in my small, personal server. I genuinely do not know why they felt the need to make this vague post and say the things they said in it.

Also, nowhere in my post did I make any mention of being concerned about the number of notes. I did not say or imply anywhere that I'm scared of losing notes or reblogs. Because I'm not worried about that. What I said was that I'm scared I won't have a place to belong because I've always been an outsider. I'm not part of any cliques or groups and I never have been. I don't think it's me being a 'whiny ass' to want human connection and to want people I can talk to and be friends with. Is it stupid of me to want friends? Is it stupid of all the other people who have expressed similar sentiments?

I vented in my small, cp77 based server called Red Dirt to people that I believed were my friends about something that's been worrying me since late 2022. I wasn't aware that being vulnerable in front of my friends was "attention-seeking, whiny ass" behaviour and I didn't know that I'd be seen as annoying for getting something off of my chest. I genuinely thought that the people in that server were people I could trust and people I could be open with hence why it remained in the server.

This post invalidates a lot of people's feelings and it's just plain hurtful to name-call people for wanting human connection. It's not just me who has been open about feeling left out and ignored. I'm not the only person who has expressed that they feel unwanted and like they don't belong anymore in the fandom. Another person very recently has expressed similar sentiments and had valid concerns. Another vague-post by the same person was made in regards to that and was again, very invalidating and hurtful. It's ironic that this person, after targeting someone who has never done anything wrong to anyone, stated "stay kind" as if them hurting a large group of people was kind and peaceful.

Going forward, all I'm asking for are two things; some compassion and empathy for people who are struggling in the fandom, and to not resort to ranty, targeted vagueposts as a means to try solve personal-level issues. Vagueposts don't solve problems. We have seen this multiple times in this fandom. All they do is open up the doors to harmful assumptions and allow for misconstruing words/intentions into something they are not. This kind of misinformation creates more problems than it fixes.

Hey, all, just a heads-up that posts about the RESTRICT Act that talk about minimum penalties of a $250k fine or 20-year imprisonment are at least partly misinformation. Those penalties are mentioned in the bill, but they define maximum penalties (phrased as "not more than"). The relevant section is Section 11 "Penalties," specifically subsection 11(b) "Civil Penalties" for the $250k fine and 11(c) "Criminal Penalties" for the 20 years. The bill text is searchable, so you can jump right to the relevant portion by searching for those two subheadings.

I just read through the bill today, and I am concerned about it. I'm not confident in my own ability to interpret the legalese and figure out all the implications, but it does read to me as a lot of vague language intended to create broad powers for government intervention and limited oversight of those powers. I am not certain whether other claims in the posts I've seen are reasonable interpretations or overblown, but the fact that the posts include factual errors about the penalties makes me deeply skeptical of the rest of their interpretations.

I absolutely understand why most people don't want to slog through the whole bill to figure it out from scratch--I didn't either, and I'm still not confident I understand it all--but please be careful whose interpretation you take as truth and spread further. If you go by someone else's summary, make sure you have reason to think they're reputable and truthful.

Don't trust my interpretation either! That's why I stated where to find the exact statements I'm going by about the penalties, so you can confirm it straight from the bill. Unfortunately, none of the posts I've seen so far mentioning the "minimum" penalties have done this, so I cannot follow how they are reaching the rest of their conclusions.

Quotes about the penalties from the current (2023-04-01) bill text included under the readmore for completeness:

From Section 11(b) Civil Penalties:

(b) Civil penalties.—The Secretary may impose the following civil penalties on a person for each violation by that person of this Act or any regulation, order, direction, mitigation measure, prohibition, or other authorization issued under this Act:

I’m gonna say this once but on the whole back and forth on remarriage after leaving an abusive relationship is missing the huge caveat that you really need to discuss the individual case with a canon lawyer.

Remarriage in the Catholic Church after a separation and civil divorce requires an annulment (there never was a marriage to begin with). If you can’t get an annulment well you can’t be remarried, no matter the personal sentiment of “God wouldn’t let a person who escaped an abusive spouse be unable to find love again” or whatever.

But speaking as someone who has had multiple family members either escape abusive marriages and remain single or get their initial marriages annulled and remarrying, you needed someone well versed in canon law who deals with annulments to look at your case. Advice on the internet is great and all but this is a topic outside the realm of some priests so please please don’t assume what you read on the internet is how it works for every case.
