will never not hate duolingo for introducing the heart system. people MAKE MISTAKES WHEN LEARNING A LANGUAGE. PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKES TO LEARN. even native speakers make mistakes all the time. punishing people for it and making it so they cant continue to learn is the opposite of what a language learning site should do.

I remember a year or so ago telling people that Duolingo is a for-profit company and that they would ultimately start to fuck shit up for money, but nobody believed me because "oh Duolingo is cool they're funny isn't the green owl funny?" Reminder that capitalism fucking sucks so use language tools that aren't made by major tech companies looking to turn profits.

My gripe with learning Japanese on Duolingo is that I have to figure out the grammar by myself. I need to know the theory AND the practice.

How was I supposed to find out that there are different words for animate vs. inanimate existence??

Duolingo ACTUALLY just SUCKS. and there's no use to keep using this cheap excuse of a manipulative junk.

An app, about making language learning fun SHOULD NEVER. EVER. think guilt tripping, shaming, and being mean is ok.

Especially recently with the notifs (tho i deleted all the screenshots i made of those).

Do the devs not realise that this is genuinely problematic? Not everyone who uses the app cares (or likes) the online Duolingo meme persona (or knows it). Not all people who use the app react very positively to needy, guilt trippy, manipulative mean behaviour.

I remember such emails making me VERY emotionally unhappy when i was using it to practice my German (when i first moved to the country) as i was already getting isolated from the native students for not being able to communicate with them, or having to work twice as much to keep up with school so i wouldn't fail just to get worse results.

Imagine telling a 13 year old CHILD that their "skills in German are getting bad" because they didn't use your app. (And what negatively affects a young teen can affect an old person, or an insecure person, or a person with mental illness or disorders)

And they have only gotten worse over the years. I keep reinstalling duo every so often to have fun/practice languages of different kinds cause i think its cool to want to make linguistics fun... but every time i leave faster than the last.

Every time i get more sick and tired of this pathetic green owl that doesn't actually want you to learn a language or have fun but instead "get exp every day"

Which sorry to tell you but Experience points don't work in language learning games.

1.. "Grinding level 1" over and over doesn't make you good at a language. it just makes you good at knowing what "Dog" in a different language is.

2. Hearts. Really? Isn't learning about making mistakes What makes you think that everyone wants (or can) do it daily?

3. If i wanna do it on specific days i cant?? So you guilt me into having to do it every day??? Fudge you.

4. The competitions for badges?? Makes people care more about the "game" (that is not FUN AT ALL) rather than .... Idk.... LEARNING???

5. Where did the costumes go?? I swear it was the only thing i found fun: do a lesson, get gems and then u can customise the owl. I was always hoping they would add more but instead they effing got rid of the mechanic all together. Yayyyyy.... :|

6. Addictive?? Why?? Isnt the app supposed to be "5 minutes a day" not "Instagram-doomscroll" levels of grinding??

And so much more.

Fuck that owl. I hate it. I hate how the devs progressively made it worse and worse.But the worst is the emails imo.

Nothing will be worse than an app shaming you for not using it. See how dystopian our society is already?? Getting guilt-tripped around by a EFFING DIGITAL OWL.

French Learning Speed Run, Let's Fucking Go!

speed running duolingo because I have aprox one year before my subscription expires (forgot to unsubscribe a while ago), and I have learned it's possible to finish the french course in it's entirety in about 6 months if you complete one unit a day.

Genuinely trying to learn while I do this, I got a hand written note book where I colour code the gendered words I struggle with and make a list of words that get me mixed up.

On the side I've also started using busuu for french which:

doesn't use AI so there are less errors and the audio parts are spoken by real humans so they're easier to understand (duolingo has several errors/translations that only half make sense, and the audio for some things are often difficult to tell what they're saying)

has a free version that contains ads, which so far I have found to be relatively unobtrusive (it's been a while since I had the ad version of duolingo but I have been informed that it makes the app virtually unusable)

actually explains the grammar concepts and vocabulary words in full before you end up using them

intermitently I've been putting on french audiobook versions of things I've already read in english, and watching french movies without english subtitles. This is great because it gives visual context for what they're saying/doing.
