i've been watching yellowjackets this month and obvs i've seen hannibal and yet there's just something about the cannibalism / human consumption in xenoblade chronicles that just fucks with my head so much more

i think it's the like... so obviously there's the size difference, there's the being eaten alive

but i was chatting abt it earlier and i think what really fucks with me is like

so all cannibalism narratives have an element of what you're eating becoming part of you

it is the most complete way to own and dominate another person, eg w hannibal lecter, its a way to subsume their power into yours, eg w the dragon eating the painting

its a very complete intimacy? eg in Yellowjackets, shauna biting into jackie's ear

and i know there are cultures that practice compassionate cannibalism like, as an act of processing grief?

esp bc in yellowjackets too like. there's the necessity of the situation, right? they're horrified at what they're doing, it's anathema to their cultural ideals

BUT they are starving. literally, they are starving

in hannibal, obvs hannibal lives in luxury now, but his predilection for cannibalism is borne of trauma, of past starvation, and obvs there was an aspect of consuming his own grief w his consumption of his sister mischa

in xenoblade chronicles like... firstly, it's the fact that the mechon are a different people to the homs - they are establishing themselves as a predator group and homs and nopon as a prey group, right?

and esp then like. the cattle comparisons etc become more frightening

esp given that they leave the colonies for a year, THEN attack, and obvs it was for their own recovery but also, the way the faced mechons then FEAST on some of the ppl, it feels like fuckin. the start of a hunting season

obviously there's the particular violence created by the size differential, like ppl are continuously dwarfed by an entire hand or tentacle in which they're held and pinned, and ofc like. if they're bitten into it will go right THROUGH them

that fear of consumption is very visceral and complete, you know? and esp the implication of potentially being alive during the process of digestion, like, that's horrifying in Nope but Jean Jacket isn't like. gleeful or bragging about it, it's just an animal

The bit where he's laughing about eating Juju and says "i'll keep him safe... in my belly!" or something similar went RIGHT through me

like there is so much glee, there is so much sadistic joy and performance in the consumption of the colonists by the mechons

this sense that they're an overabundant crop, and therefore can be devoured in this act of like, complete gluttony? that they can eat them not just for the nourishment but the delight of it, not at their taste or nutrition either, but at their suffering and grief?

and most of all what really skeeves me out is that like. they take such joy in eating them, and at the same time, the process of eating them gives them STRENGTH. like its a very literal exploration of taking on your enemy's strengths by consuming parts of them

by eating homs, they too become immune to the monado - they assimilate the homs' strengths into their own bodies, and having done so, are even better placed to exploit and destroy them

I'm working on laying flats for my dragon boi Jiro and I can't fucking tell which shades of pink I used for which parts of his body even with a visual reference, so I have to open a .psd and toggle the visibility of each layer PLUS note the hex codes I used fgjklgjklfdf

I really need to make a reference sheet with coded numbers and colours just for the pinks; I love his colours but I can't for the life of me remember how I'm supposed to apply them since I intentionally made the pink flats blend together nicely without realizing that was going to cause a lot of problems for me later without highly detailed references
