While I’m a big fan of the “Von Karma being a piece of shit mentor and father figure to Edgeworth” concept and there is definitely some truth to those statements, I also wanna address the fact that it is canon that Von Karma was a good mentor to Edgeworth and growing up in that household wasn’t as horrific as it may seem at first glance. Frankly if it was, Edgeworth wouldn’t have been manipulated like he was.
Now just taking that into consideration, that makes the moment Edgeworth finds out what actually happened to his dad so much more heartbreaking. When mini Miles lost his dad, that was his world taken from him. He didn’t have any other relatives to go to and no direction in life. Then in steps a man who he knew his father respected to some degree, offering him a home and guidance, teaching mini Miles everything he knows and inspiring him. The ruthless God of prosecutors himself helping Edgeworth build himself up again.
Then he finds out that the one man who stepped in, the one he was willing to follow, was the very same man who caused his suffering in the first place. Not only that, but he’s spent so long following his teachings, that he himself has essentially become just another version of the man who caused his suffering. And to add fuel to the fire, that father figure clearly knew of Edgeworth’s survivors guilt and PTSD and used it against him and went as far as to frame him for murder.
It is honestly a wonder to me how Edgeworth didn’t completely break down right then and there in the courtroom. Von Karmas betrayal of Edgeworth is definitely talked about a lot in the fandom but the added context of what isn’t shown in the game or anime just makes it all the more heartbreaking
Edit: doing an edit on this post cuz I feel like I didn’t communicate what I wanted the best I could. My bad, y’all. This isn’t me saying that there wasn’t abuse at play. There was. Manfred was very obviously emotionally neglectful of Edgeworth and Franziska and instilled a perfectionist complex in both of them. That much is clear by the way Edgeworth speaks with him in a strictly business like manner. But I think it’s important to acknowledge that while Manfred was a shitty father figure, he still showed Edgeworth some form of kindness over the years. (I also believe that it has been confirmed that he was a good mentor to Miles but if I’m wrong about that let me know). We see that in the anime in particular where it’s shown he favoured Miles over Franziska. And also that’s how abuse works. The abuser will show kindness to their victim because otherwise they can’t manipulate the victim as easily. Manfred isn’t a good person but I think it’s important to look at his relationship with Edgeworth with a bit of nuance. Miles knew Manfred wouldn’t show him mercy in the court room because he knows how important his win record is. That doesn’t take away from the fact that he showed Edgeworth some form of kindness over the years. In my opinion, it just makes the whole situation more tragic

It’s taken a long while, but it’s finally done! Special interests have collided to bring you: Phoniex Wright: Ace-A-Pony! Time lines are all over the place but ah well! Keep reading for some random headcanons in no particular order! (spoilers for the whole series!)
- Phoniex doesn’t really like flying, as he’s severely acrophobic. Amazingly, he did not break his wings when falling from the bridge, but he has chronic pain in his back and both wings as a result. Even more of a reason not to fly
- Kristoph poses as a blank flank, but an actuality possesses a rather grim cutie mark. He hides it with a concealment spell. However, the truth is revealed by Apollo in the last case of AA4. He is proud of his traditional unicorn heritage. His motives for his crimes are uncertain, with some theorising a desire for greater magical power, or even alicorn ascension. But who knows, maybe he did it for fun.
- General MLP headcanon - all ponies have hearts on the bottom of hooves. Kristoph has a broken heart on his front left hoof
- The Phantom is changeling, and kidnapped the real Fullbright. The true Bobby is eventually rescued after the events of AA5 and tries to recover from his ordeal
- Nahyuta is an alicorn, but was originally a pegasus. He was always planned to ascend to Alicorn status, but the process was done early than originally planned following the actions of his father. It was basically a desperate plea to seperate him further from his father’s image and closer to the Sigatar family
- The Fey Clan are mostly earth ponies, but all the most powerful of them are unicorns. Pearl is the first unicorn born in many generations - one of the reasons why her mother does what she can to get her to the top.
- The Gramaryes are a proud family of traditional unicorns, and are powerful magic users. Apollo is an earth pony like his father, but still posses quite powerful magic
- The Von Karmas are a proud line of pegasi that look down on unicorns and earth ponies. Its rumoured that Manfred wished for alicorn ascension, but no one knows. What was known was that the family hated Edgeworth and his traditional unicorn heritage
- Edgeworth struggles with his identity and heritage. Due to being brought up by pegasi, he knows very little about magical practice, and what he does comes exclusively from studying
- General couple stuff now! Edgeworth and Phoniex are married. Apollo and Klavier are dating long distance with Apollo working in Khura’in. Franziska and Maya are engaged. Athena and Junie are dating.
- Blackquill and Bobby’s relationship is.. complicated. Blackquill and the Phantom were in a relationship of some kind, but after he is unmasked and the original Fullbright is found, Blackquill has a bit of a fucking breakdown fkdjhfkjdh. He and Nahyuta see each other for a while but that doesn’t work out. Him and the real Bobby are helping each other come to terms with what the Phantom did to them

one thing i will never forgive the ace attorney fandom for is the severe mischaracterization and fanonization of manfred von karma. they turned him into an evil harmful abuser and it just makes a weaker narrative overall to me. i dont have any problem with it just being a headcanon because people are allowed to have whatever the fuck they want even if i dont like it but No its considered to be Canon and anyone who likes this character is Bad and its like Babe there is so many other things to hate this man over why do you choose one that is never shown in the games besides Once and that turned out to be a mistranslation and is also from a game that commonly mischaracterized its characters. what are you talking about.
you know what you CAN hate this man over? he was the one that people respected and adored, the one that was considered to be a god amongst prosecutors. he may be cold, stand-offish and a perfectionist, but miles knew he at least cared about him and was his main source of comfort when he needed it. he never knew that he was the one who killed his father and changed his life forever. he never knew that the person that gave him this much love and comfort was the person who made him scared of earthquakes to the point he'd passed out and made him always persistent on taking the stairs. the person who he hugged and cried into the shoulder of being the man who changed it all for the worse.
and for what? because he was a coward. he got scared when his perfect record has it's first penalty - and it wasn't even a loss. he still won. he could've moved on with his life and pretended it never happened. he was still respected amongst prosecutors despite it, after all, it wasn't his fault. yet he just couldn't help it. it was opportunistic and uncalculated. he was filled with such guilt and regret to the point he took in his victim's own son and raised him like his own. knowingly allowed him to cry into his shoulder and told him that it was going to be okay, he's here and that's all that matters when he was the one who took that gun and shot him.
and then people Hate him not because of all of that but because he is an Evil Abuser And Doesn't Regret What He Did At All Because He's Just That Evil.

So I've had this idea swimming in my head for a bit and I considered doing a fic about it but honestly I just want to do a headcanon write up for now at least. So narumitsu Franmaya post SOJ kids!
So I think after SOJ the elders in Kurain are going to start really getting on Maya's ass about having a baby. And it's getting really annoying. She been dating/married to Franziska for years at this point but I think they're solidly convinced she's having her "lesbian phase" and that once Pearl is of age and doesn't need looking after anymore and she's officially the Master of Kurain she's going to find herself a husband and settle down.
Maya fucking hates this. She wants them to properly recognise her relationship and while her relationship with the entire concept of having kids is very complicated, she doesn't want Channeling to die out so she condededs that fine, she'll have the damn kids but Franziska is being their mom.
Franziska has her own complicated ideas around legacy but is equally getting annoyed but she recognises this is important for Maya's culture and she doesn't dislike kids in general, she's been a good Tante to Trucy and while her relationship with Pearl is rocky she's thinks she's done a perfect job being her quasi step mother.
So they concoct a plan.
One day they sit Miles, Phoenix and Trucy down and say they're going to try IVF and they ask Miles to be the donor because in the absence of true male Von Karma DNA, honourary Von Karma DNA will do the job. Phoenix is completely on board because hes been listening to Maya complain about this for literal years and wants it to be over and done with for her. Trucy finds the idea hilarious because it promises to make their already insane family tree even more convoluted and she thrives in that chaos. She's also very aware that's she's presently the baby of the family and is a bit worried about her dad's empty nesting. Miles is honoured to be asked.
They do the thing. Then a few months later the Wright-Edgeworth's get a panicked phone call. Maya has just had a check up and has found out that she is pregnant with triplets. But one of them is male. 3 kids was going to be a lot anyway but there's enough people in Kurain that they can make it work. But Maya is very very aware of how weird the village is around men and really doesn't want her kid raised in that environment. And Phoenix and Miles, bleeding heart chronic adopters that they are agree that they'll raise the boy and Maya and Franziska can raise the girls in Kurain. So begins the chaos.
Miles does an insane amount of prep for the baby. He reads literally every parenting book he can get his hands on. He might as well have an honourary degree in child development after the amount of research he does. He calls up old contacts from universities he's taught at to get access to papers, he complies reading lists, he makes binders full of note, he goes completely overboard because he's going to raise this kid right. (I honestly think he did this when he first became involved in Trucy's life too but those stages of development are vastly different to that of a baby)
Franziska, does not. She is convinced she knows everything she could possibly need to in order to do this perfectly. Pearl turned out fine. These kids will too. Miles keeps sending her papers he's read and she will skim them, states that she already knew all of that and tell him he's over reacting. However she does do a good number of therapy sessions in preparation to get her head straight about what stuff Manfred did that was good and what stuff he did that was bad.
Phoenix is panicking and being way way too attentive of Maya. He's calling every few hours to make sure she's ok. Not because he's worried about the babies, though he is, but because his best friend/kid sister is carrying 3 human beings and he's terrified she's going to get hurt. He will cross the bridge of raising them when he gets there, he did fine with Trucy and he's kind of a dad by nature at this point.
Maya Hates being pregnant. She despises it. She can't do all the cool active stuff she's used to, Nick is being overbearing as well as all the other general stuff that sucks with being pregnant. She is not enjoying this and is actually kinda glad it's triplets because that means she has 2 female heirs an she never has to do this ever again. She is however also not stressing about raising them. She has some basics covered like making damn sure no one pits them against eachother and that they can chose among the pair of them who's going to inherit her title when they're good and ready. They'll need a certain level of spiritual training obviously but she's determined to give them as normal a life as possible and hopefully when they're old enough have them travel a lot with her and Franziska while Franziska is working.
This is a more complicated other headcanon but I think this is around the time Trucy starts properly coming to terms with the fact that the Gramaryes suck ass and she doesn't actually want anything to do with them. So she's kind of doing some soul searching and decides to take a gap year after school to figure out if she wants to be a magician or not by trying to define herself by something else. This gap year ends up manifesting by being an investigative assistant full time at the WAA while also trying out literally everything else she's ever had a passing interest in. She's figuring herself out during this time basically.
The babies come. Nick is incredibly overbearing during the labor. Franziska is just focusing on helping Maya through it and Miles is stressed the fuck out that this is happening and real.
And so Richard (after gumshoe), Sakura (named after the Pink Princess), and Brunhilde (named by Franziska because it means Armoured for battle which Maya thought sounded cool as hell) are born. The elders are very upset about how the names don't follow traditional fey naming convention but Maya doesn't care. She wants these kids to grow up knowing the exist outside of the village and giving Brunhilde a German name makes is even clearer that Franziska is her mother and nothing is changing that fact.
Maya and Franziska have a basically uneventful time raising the girls. The elders have been prepared for this for years. Maya goes by Mom/Mommy, Fran goes by Mama. As they planned they take them all over the globe with Frans work with Interpol. Maya gets to call it a holiday regularly and fobs off the elders by saying that they'll be better trained by being more worldly. She'll look after the kids as Fran works and when they go back to Kurain they switch and Fran will take cases in the japanifonia prosecutors office when the elders want to train them. They're a well oiled machine. Brunhilde ends up taking more after Fran and Sakura takes more after Miles. Brunhilde is actually really good at channeling but decides to let Sakura take the title because she enjoys it more. The elders are actually pretty glad about this because Brunhilde is absolutely terrifying. She got the Edgeworth glare which combined with supernatural powers makes her seem like something out of the Omen. Franziska and Maya couldn't be more proud. Sakura is a little more mild mannered but given her parents it's not by much. She's still a forceful presence but she's just typically a lot more easy going. She is genuinely passionate as hell about Channeling, she got Maya and Miles' autism and it's becomes her special interest. She's studious and devoted and really cares about what she does. She ends up doing a ton to revolutionise channeling when she becomes master and basically brings it into a new golden age. The two of them are close and their parents make certain to makes sure there's absolutely no bad blood there.
Miles and Phoenix have a slightly more chaotic time raising Richard. They're both workaholics and also running major legal bodies so figuring out how to make time to raise a baby amongst that is difficult.
They start with Phoenix taking paternity leave and calling in to talk with Athena. Trucy at this point is still in her final year so the office is quiet as hell and Athena HATES it. She needs a busy environment and being alone in the office is driving her mad.
So that last like a month before they just decide to baby proof the WAA and have Phoenix look after Richard while he's there. Athena likes babies (like come on, she does) but the crying is difficult on her ears so Phoenix gets her some very strong noise cancelling headphones and the pair of them come up with an insane series of methods of non verbally communicating. Phoenix and Athena barely have a braincell of common sense between them so they end up with various whiteboards all over the office to write stuff on and a nerf gun each to get each others attention.
One Apollo's first return visit from Kura'in with this as the new status quo Richard nearly chokes on a dart and he asks why they didn't just both learn ASL to which Athena and Phoenix both look at each other because the sensible solutions never even occurred to them. They learn ASL after that.
The first time they have to investigate a case Phoenix just straps up with a dad harness and takes the baby to the crime scene. This goes predictably poorly. Richard won't stop crying while they're talking to witnesses and Athena has to put on her head phones which means Phoenix has to write down everything the witness says to show her but his handwriting is terrible and he can't spell when writing so quickly so Athena keeps misunderstanding what's been said. Richard throws up on some evidence. They then get threatened by some goons which when Phoenix reports back to Miles about his day nearly gives him a heart attack.
After that one of 3 things happens. If Trucy is free, she'll either babysit her kid brother or investigate with Athena, if she isn't and Miles is free/just doing work in his office, they'll drop Richard off with him for the day where Miles has baby supplies ready. If neither of them are free, Phoenix will stay in the office and look after Richard while Athena has him on face time. That being said I'd give it 3 years before that kid's back to being dragged along to crime scenes. It's the Wright kid way.
I feel like the courthouse probably has a day care so they drop him off there during trials
When Richard is in Miles office is comparatively calm compared with the WAA. Klavier comes in to coo and sing him lullabies. Taka will sometimes take vigilant watch when he's sleeping. Simon will on occasion ask about his psychological development. But it's a lot more sane. When he's a bit older I'm reasonably certain that Simon will let him play with his katana at least once but other than that its fine.
Despite this Richard grows up to be basically fine. Weird girl energy as comes with the territory but they try to make sure he's has as normal a childhood as possible. He takes after Maya a lot which is either a biological thing or just kind of what happens when a considerable chunk of your devolpment is done in a WAA that is lacking Apollo. Miles is keeping a detailed track on all his development milestones and he's pretty far ahead but reasonably so. He's smart but he's not a Prodigy which they take to mean basically healthy. If and when he ever does struggle with something they're very good about telling him that's ok and that helping him improve while also making sure he knows it's not a moral failing to struggle. He's aware that Brunhilde and Sakura are his siblings but it's explained more as 3 kids being a lot to handle rather than the stuff about Kurain being weird. He sees them both regularly and all 4 of them love all 3 kids to pieces.
In terms of appearance as they get older, I think Richard has Maya's round soft features but Miles' grey hair and eye colour. Brunhilde is kind of the opposite, she's got the dark hair and piercing blue eyes but the sharp Edgeworth features. She also got his shitty eye sight and has glasses from a very young age. Sakura has grey narrowed eyes but round cheeks and dark hair.

Round 1 Poll 30: So Much Over A Mistranslation
One Piece submission:
A while ago a translation of a translation with bad English translated Law's line calling Corazon a ""大好きだった人"" (literally just ""someone [he] loved"") as him being his ""most treasured person"" and people just fucking RAN with it and I still saw it in edits years later. I've always hated it and I always will. People were using it in meta analysis and theory discussion about how he loved Corazon more than his family like,,, he literally did not fucking say that.
Ace Attorney submissions:
Manfred von Karma is not a child abuser!!!!!
Manfred von Karma is a canonical child abuser. That's just fanon and the only ""evidence"" is a mistranslation.
Manfred von Karma is often painted as abusive on fanworks, and while there's technically nothing wrong with that, the people who subscribe to this headcanon often refuse to entertain the idea that what theyre saying is just that. A HEADCANON. Theyre also sometimes downright hostile to anyone who likes Manfred in general. Usually, what they quote as ""proof"" is a line translated incorrectly and likely in bad faith in a side game, or just straight up fanfic. My friend group encounters this so much that we have a name for this phenomenon.
Manfred Von Karma is an abusive father
the fandom says that manfred von karma is canonically an abusive father. he literally isn't.
Manfred von Karma was not a child abuser
Manfred von Karma is a child abuser
manfred von karma beat his kids
these motherfuckers make up SO MUCH DUMB SHIT all the time but the one that kills me most is that they have a widely based fanon that manfred von karma is abusive when it's completely up to interpretation in the games. he's just a mean bitch and a murderer so they decided he beats/grooms/emotionally neglects his kids too and its so boring i took this to another blog and so did a lot of others in the fandom, the ""misinterpreted blorbo""/""he would not fucking say that"" bracket. immediately the mod was FLOODED with these people claiming that i was straightup lying, WITH MORE LIES. the most insane thing i saw was someone said that manfred allegedly burned letters that miles sent to phoenix when they were separated. not only did phoenix never send letters in canon (popular headcanon) but manfred most certainly was never said to have intercepted them! they were literally quoting wrightworth fanfiction they had read or some shit. its so fucking weird. people who see him as just kind of a silly murder dad with a really fucked up place in the story literally get called abuse apologists. and then when we're like 'BRO WHERE IS THE ABUSE' the other side is just like. 'play the game lol!!!!' meanwhile i, autistic, have played it 546445 times and half the people arguing with me watched one LP in like 2013 and have subsisted entirely off of twitter fanon and ao3 every since. please let me exit this hell
Manfred von karma abuses his kids
manfred von karma was abusive reasons it is false: he most definately was not the one line of ""proof"" (from a dubiously canon source) was a mistranslation from japanease to english von karma did not call miles worthless he called him inexperienced yes von karma is a horrible man but he was not a bad father

unskippable cutscene time?
ok. this turned into me complaining about the fandom misinterpreting one of my fav characters, and only after all that did i actually start talking about said character. also i think this might actually be several separate reblogs because i talk way too much and it doesn’t all fit into one post
everyday i go on this website and i talk about my ace attorney faves. but look. godot. he's a very interesting guy. he's a very interesting Character. but no one fucking likes godot. it's just me and my friend who has a huge crush on him BUT LOOK. i dont need you to have a crush on godot. i just need someone to Think about him the same way i do. i need someone to actually think about his character for more than 2 seconds beyond the good looks and the asshole front. but because of a few mistranslations and scenes that just Read Wrong in an american setting, everyone thinks godot is a misogynist. even though he is SOOO not. like it;s literally not a thing for him in actual canon it's an actual mistranslation that makes people think he drinks misogyny juice instead of coffee every morning. my point is that godot is in fact not a misogynist, but my BIGGER point is: what if he Was. like if half the fandom thinks he hates women anyways, then why not make it interesting, you know?? like. look. obviously misogyny is not cool. but there are ways to write about it and to actually develop the character behind it. some of the fandom literally just reduces him to woman hater. like that's it? forreal? all im saying is if you're going to mischaracterize him that badly, at least make it INTERESTING. don't just make that his One Singular Trait. don't make him a misogynist because he hates every woman that's ever existed, make him one because he has good intentions but really warped ideas and worldviews. i don't know how well i'm explaining this, godot is just a complicated character, and everyone i see always simplifies him to The Asshole or The Misogynist. like yeah he CAN be those things if you want but maybe you could actually put some effort in deconstructing his biases and whatever. This is all a really long way to say that people mischaracterize godot very often and i hate it when they do that so if they're gonna do it so much they should at least make it fucking interesting (and i have a great example of a fic that does just that!! it's not godot-centered, and i just think that it's a really amazing fic in general and if you like ace attorney you should definitely read it. But like, back to godot: this fic does make him a misogynist, sure. it also Actually Explores how his toxic masculinity, his trauma, his loss of mia and his desire to protect maya all intertwine. he has good intentions and he's coming from a good place, and yet he's hurt and represses a lot and has some really fucked up ideas about what it means to be a man. he needs to protect maya not just because he failed protecting mia, but also because he's a man and she's a woman, etc etc. both of those ideas coexist for him. and i think it's really interesting to try and figure out where his "debt" and guilt about mia ends and where his toxic masculinity starts, where his need to protect maya because she's like a little sister to him ends and where the need to Protect Women(tm) in general starts. you know?? and then by the end of it he starts unlearning his bad ideas and starts coming to terms with his trauma!! Like holy shit can every godot is a misogynist truther start doing this please!!!!! i'm soo serious if you;re going to mischaracterize him at least make it fun to think about. but i digress. read the fic not only because it explores godot's character but also because it actually explores dahlia's character and backstory and explores the von karma family dynamic as well as many other things which the games never did. it's awesome)

DL-6 anon! Regarding the von Karma essay: not much of an essay in that I'm writing a fic instead, but basically this is the best thing I could come up with:
DL-6, kills Gregory in a haze
Realizes Gregory left behind a son. The son was in the elevator. Of course it's not guilt for depriving the kid of a father! I am above such pitiful feelings. No he's a potential witness. I need to meet him and see what he knows
Big relief! He doesn't know anything
shit he's smart. And polite. And he asked me if I was prosecuting the trial for his father's death cause he wants the defendant found guilty. I can't leave such a promising kid in the system!
Takes Miles in. It's only temporary! I need to make sure he's in a place that'll be good to him. It's the least I can do, he's such a bright kid. He shouldn't be an orphan, he deserves better. ... oh wait. it's kinda my fault, isn't it.
Nightmare...? Oh shit. He actually witnessed the murder even if he doesn't realize it's me screaming
wait he was the one who fucking shot me???
wait oh he thinks he's the one - well he did throw the gun - this is way too convenient. Yes little boy I am going to encourage the idea you got into your own head that you did kill your father. I know it hurts you but I don't want to go to prison
He's a witness I can't let him go back to the system where, left to his own devices, he might one day realize the truth. I need to keep him under my control. Also he's kind of a delight but that has nothing to do with it
shit Franziska loves him now I really can't let him go
shit he wants to be a prosecutor and he's still so smart and cold. He fits in perfectly with my perfect family and its traditional and elitist values. Mine now. (Path of pain and all that. Nothing so plebeian as feelings, of course.)
Fast-forward a few years. Yes little Miles 13 years old is a perfect age to start studying law to become a perfect prosecutor. I am going to start tutoring you and you will be a perfect student. I will accept nothing less. (You can do it.)
Franziska. You cannot start learning law at 6, that's too young. What do you mean I spend too much time tutoring Miles and not enough time with you any more and it's unfair so you want to follow the lessons, too. .... I just can't refuse you anything, can I. Well you better keep up perfectly. I don't want you impeding your brother's progress.
Fast-forward another few years. 19 year-old Miles is a genius, I taught him well, I am proud of him. I am taking him on my cases now. ... Why is he questioning my lessons?? Of course I only need to show the relevant evidence and the witnesses must be perfectly coached? Next he's going to accuse me of forging evidence? Or of murder?? ...... maybe I overreacted. Certainly my outburst has nothing to do with long-denied guilt and fear. I'll take him and his sister to karaoke to make up for it.
..... What do you mean, you're taking the bar too, Franziska? You're only 13. Wait. What do you mean you took a mock exam? And you did it perfectly? ... you're right. I can see it. You truly are worthy of the von Karma name. Of course you have my blessing. Make me proud.
20 year-old Miles starts his career. He's good. I did a good job with him.
but my shoulder still hurts. It's hard not to hate him in those moments. I must never show him though.
Fast-forward a few years. What do you mean, Miles, you LOST?? How could that have happened. I thought I had perfect control on - I mean, run the case by me once more? Oh. Those can all be attributed to external circumstances. Now that I have a better understanding of the fact you didn't betray our ways, I'm not mad at you. This was merely unfortunate, you did everything you could. I'm sure it won't happen again. Let's do something fun and fancy to lift your spirits. Did you hear about Franziska's career? She's really making a name for herself back in Germany.
What do you mean Miles a second loss. How did that happen. .... You doubted. What do you mean the defendant was innocent - didn't I teach you better than that - where did I go wrong with you -
(this is his father talking. he is slipping from my grasp. he cannot be allowed to accuse me. this is everything I ever feared. I cannot fall like that.)
This has been going on for too long. I want this fear gone, I want him gone. .... And I know how to do it. The perfect plan.
No. That's going too far. I spent so much energy on him. He is my ward and my pupil. I can't do this to him.
What do you mean it's nearly December and you're having the nightmares more intensely again. You're having the nightmares again. You're having the -
... Yanni Yogi's address found. Letter sent. I sure hope I don't regret this.
I am already regretting this.
Oh no. This is happening exactly how I had planned. I cannot back down any more. Miles will be sentenced and I will never see him again. Well he deserves it, for shooting me in the shoulder, for doubting me, for failing, for... he deserves it. He does. No defendant is innocent.
Edgeworth. I will profess my hatred and disdain for you and your lineage at every opportunity I have. Surely that will prevent me from succumbing to the guilt and the regret and from realizing I made a mistake. We've got to follow! The path of pain! To the end!
Why is my perfect case f a l l i n g a p a r t this has never happened to me. I have never felt so stressed in my life. Not even when Gregory Edgeworth got me that damn penalty. Not even when you shot me in the shoulder. Not even when I was overcome with hatred and committed a crime that still haunts me, still pursues me, I can never escape -
You and your father are my curse!
... and well. You know the rest ^^ (Note: I realise the tone is too memey to be von Karmic, idk why that's how it came to me x))
Also I agree on the "what's done is done" attitude! And I agree Miles would probably go and visit him. Imagine being raised by someone for fifteen years like a son and then finding out they framed you for murder and killed your father while you believed you were the one that killed him. I think he'd be so confused, he'd have no idea what of those fifteen years were genuine and what of it was schemes of hatred. I think he'd need that closure. Alas, I think Manfred would deny it to him - not out of malice, but because he genuinely thinks it to be pointless. (And he's also too proud to talk about feelings, I kinda stand by that. If Manfred has one cardinal sin, it's pride. It's the von Karma generational curse!)
phew that was a long one I apologise ^^ All the best!!
I don’t think this message was memey at all, I think you’ve got Manfred peeled open, organs visible. You’ve perfectly dissected him and his character and now we get to play with his parts. Never apologize for a post being too long, I’ve adored every single one. It’s been a wonderful journey. SEND ME THE FIC WHEN YOU’RE DONE!!!

ace attorney am i right (hcs)
to start keep in mind i have only played the pwaa trilogy and like the first 1.5 cases in apollo justice so thats all ive got to go off of in terms of firsthand knowledge
ok i think miles and franziska have that type of relationship thats like "don't even look at me or i'll kill you" but they are also siblings which means tickles whether you like it or not ok. thats the facts
they couldn't do it when von karma was around though cause i feel like he'd yell at them for messing around or something
they've both grown out of it a bit but they're both still ticklish if you get the right spots
speaking of siblings. phoenix and maya
theyre siblings in my eyes okay
maya forces nick to buy a wii or something so she can kick his ass in mario kart
shes def the type to say "i let you win <3" when she loses
when she's losing she'll reach over and jab phoenix in the ribs to make him mess up so she can get ahead
phoenix tries doing it back and shes like "unfortunately for you i'm not ticklish!!" which works for a while until phoenix finds her spots
then she's fucked
only like three people alive know that edgeworth is ticklish
first is franziska who only uses it when Absolutely Necessary (making him pay for their meal is very necessary, okay)
"only foolish fools like yourself would have such a foolish weakness" she says before getting wrecked herself
i like to think they have a more civil relationship than they do. sue me
second is phoenix. found out when they were kids and suddenly remembered it one day and wanted to see if it still worked (it did)
and third is gumshoe. he'll poke edgeworth's sides when he looks particularly grumpy and miles threatens to cut his salary again
i just know gumshoe gives good hugs. like okay they're awkward and he doesn't really know what he's doing but i think a hug from him would cure me
phoenix's favourite hobby is tickling miles because he Loves seeing him happy and smiling, especially since it's such a rare sight
miles acts like he hates it but he'll always tolerate it
as long as he's allowed to get phoenix back that is
klavier thinks it's So fun to tease apollo cause he turns red really easily and klavier finds it very entertaining
he'll hover his hands over apollo's stomach and just laugh at him
klavier's not as ticklish but apollo will still get him back sometimes
if he's being particularly annoying he just grabs him and digs into his hips
trucy is a traitor. she'll tell klavier "polly's knees are really bad btw" and pretends she's done nothing wrong
phoenix has to deal with his two kids just chasing each other around the offices because they're always in the middle of a tickle fight

Watching a playhthrough of rise from the ashes and OH MY GOD I forgot how much chief gant creeps me out....
Like von karma doesn't really creep me out. I mean he definitely looks evil. But that's the thing, it's like, cartoonishly evil. He looks like a damn vampire. It's more his actions that are like "what the FUCK I hate this guy." Same thing with engarde.
Dahlia's appearance doesn't creep me out much, the whole thing with her is that she looks cute but is fucked up and evil. After actually knowing what she did though...yeah looking at her sweet little smiling face definitely feels,,,,off.
But NONE of the other damn villains in the trilogy give me the feeling GANT does...like. every time this fucker comes on screen with his damn organ playing it just feels wrong. Like there is SOMETHING going on with this man. The way his eyes are always closed makes it even worse when he just STARES for an uncomfortable amout of time before speaking...His eyes are so damn creepy😭!!
And when he gets angry too!! Like he's the type who gets calm angry, those parts where he's like "Or didn't you hear me?" with that creepy ass smile is just,,,MY GOD. Okay I think that's all for now I just felt like talking about this-
....also his beard looks like a reese's cup

Helo! Do u have sneeze hcs for the japanifornian population? I’m of the firm belief that gant has never sneezed once in his entire life ✨🍓
absolutely obsessed w the way you phrased this
ok am going to like. attempt to cover most of the og trilogy characters but i am making 80% of this up on the fly because i only ever think about the characters im writing sickfic about and thats like 3 characters ok ok
ace attorney has too many characters so cut
team defense:
phoenix - canonically a loud bitch. does not stop at just 1. WILL shatter your windows. the way he wears a mask and it does nothing because the sheer force of his fuckign bazooka blasts sends it rocketing off his face. i have personal kin memories about this and all you need to know about it is 1. no i did not get jumpscared, shut the fuck up, i am not scared of anything 2. i say bless you with my whip
maya - ALMOST AS LOUD! WHY ARE THEY BOTH LIKE THIS. idr if this is canon but someone said morgan canonically hates loud noises so i subscribe to maya being loud out of spite. she's loud in the sub of the anime but they made her cute and tiny in the dub and i'm never gonna forgive them tbh. also she like never covers her mouth and if she does its with her hands. wright & co plague offices
mia - kinda raspy and rough-sounding. does the hand-wavy thing you know that thing people do?? where they mindlessly wave their hands for no reason before they sneeze. im obsessed with that. why she do that. also i'm stealing this from my mia kinnie friend but mia says bless you to everyone all the time no matter how many times they sneeze she will keep saying it. i don't care if memories disproves this because canon is wrong sometimes.
diego - completely fucking silent. just kinda jerks into his fist. functionally the opposite of mia tbh, but she always notices and he's kind of hopelessly endeared to it.
team bootlicker:
miles - hopelessly loud but as polite about it as he's able to be. this man has a monogrammed handkerchief and horrendous pollen allergies i feel like he has turned sneezing politely into an artform. functionally him and phoenix are at the same decibel level but phoenix is untamed and miles is sparing the ears of everyone around him. and theyre in love
gumshoe - i feel like he half-stifles to the point where you can't even tell if he's sneezed half the time. also literally always sneezes in doubles i will not elaborate. constantly waiting for that third so he can wish for a higher salary but it never comes.
franziska - ALRIGHT OKAY I HAVE OPINIONS OKAY I HAVE THOUGHTS I HAVE FEELINGS I HAVE--okay. okay. just the most delicate sound you will ever hear. small. liddol. the kind of sneeze that makes u wonder why she would bother to sneeze at all. it is so tiny, what good is it even doing. a cool thing to do if you like the taste of leather is point it out.
(also tangentially related but she's violently allergic to dogs and cursed with von karma dog loving gene so she WILL walk into miles' apartment and shove her face directly into pess with no regard for consequences. look i have flowcharts and spreadsheets--)
manfred - literally exactly the same as franziska but it's ten times funnier on him. no i'm not taking constructive criticism.
lana: habitual stifler to varying degrees of success. also she sneezes into the scarf like she'll just pull it up over her face and maybe i'm projecting but thats fine. it's fine. we're fine.
gant: what you said is funnier than anything i can come up with so i am choosing to accept it as fact.
everyone the fuck else:
larry - kitten bitch. constantly going back and forth on if he's a scream sneezer or a kitten. i think kitten is funnier. same general deal as franziska but WAY cutesier.
ema - not particularly loud but they like send her stumbling backwards a little on her feet. more than once her glasses have fallen onto her eyes and she just kinda blinks like o.o ??
i dont have enough thoughts/feelings about any other characters this is all u get gfhfdhj

Note
this sounds like it's on crack, I promise it's not but 1) istg every time I think of Wolfgang I cannot help but picture Gant (even though we've seen a sketch of him)
2) I don't know what I'm doing but vamp Gant- like idk I'll make up some background (since now I'm not just limiting to the vKs since Shelly) between them and also the idea of Gant hanging upside down when Manny is looking for him and scares the fuck out of him is amusing, give him a break, he's gonna have a heart attack and hasn't had his pills yet (I know it doesn't quite add up Gant being a vampire before Fred since he did in Greg 15 years before AA1 and Gant did it like maybe 6-8 before AA but bear with me)
Honestly, I think that at first glance Wolfgang and Gant remind of eahc other a lot, but they are so fundamentally different people that they'd hate each other within seconds were they ever to meet.
(Wolfgang fun fact: I was planning to originally name him Amadeus. But AA name puns are always more on the nose than that. Still, there probably is Amadeus von Karma somewhere out there. Like a cryptid.)
Vamp!Gant! GampGant! Vampt? Vampt. Anyway you are so right. He's always been a vampire, he just might have been a civil and tame one before one night with Niel Marshall changed everything.
Also he plays organ. Because it's fun.
But also imagine that he is the first person to figure out that Manfred has turned, and he is extremely excited about it. "Oooh, I'll teach you the jugular trick. We'll go flying together, you're not afraid of heights are you? As a bat you look with your ears, it's completely different! I have just the thing to make your coffin super comfortable!" And he is so nice and hyped that for whole ten seconds MvK forgets that Gant has a lot of contacts and could tell anyone that he is a vampire now.
Gant is probably also one of the few vampires who even in these modern times keeps blood-thralls or whatever the equivalent in the Vampire Attorney AU is. He uses them to control other people. (*cough cough* enthralled Ema Skye and poor Lana having to dance as Gant whistles *cough cough*)

Conversation
Analysis of the killings from the  Ace Attorney  original trilogy (from the perspective of a law school student, version 2.0):
PHOENIX WRIGHT, ACE ATTORNEY
The First Turnabout: Second-degree murder under the felony murder rule (FMR). This one's a bit tricky since the defense can argue that Frank Sawhit panicked, meaning he didn't intend to kill Cindy Stone, which would lead to an involuntary manslaughter charge. However, since Ace Attorney apparently takes place in California, FMR rules apply. Frank killed someone while committing a felony (burglary), which means he can be charged with murder even if he didn't intend to kill Cindy. Heck, the prosecutor could even argue that he should get a first-degree murder charge, that's how tough the FMR rules can be.
Turnabout Sisters: First degree murder. Redd White came to Mia Fey's office planning to kill her and he carried out his plan.
Turnabout Samurai: Involuntary manslaughter with a self-defense claim. Dee Vazquez didn't intend to kill Jack Hammer and she only struck back in order to protect herself. So basically, she royally fucked up since she could've been acquitted on all charges. Side note, I absolutely hate this case since this is NOT WHAT MURDER IS.
Turnabout Goodbyes: For Yanni Yogi, it's first-degree murder and conspiracy since, with Manfred von Karma's help, he took part in a plot to kill Robert Hammond and carried it out. For Manfred von Karma, it's second-degree murder. Von Karma intended to kill Gregory and carried it out, but didn't necessarily plan for Gregory's death in advance. However, since we're in California, we could use the "twinkling of an eye" approach, which means Von Karma could've premeditated the plan to kill Gregory on the spot. So Von Karma's charges could potentially bump up to first-degree.
Rise from the Ashes: For the murder of Neil Marshall, it's potentially first-degree murder. Damon Gant planned out Neil's death and carried out his plan. For the murder of Bruce Goodman, it's second-degree murder. Gant clearly didn't plan to kill Bruce in advance, but he did intend to kill him without reasonable provocation.
------------------------
JUSTICE FOR ALL
The Lost Turnabout: Second-degree murder. Richard Wellington panicked and killed Dustin Prince, which means this is an intentional killing but without premeditation. Also, he killed a cop, which is not a good look in court.
Reunion and Turnabout: First-degree murder with conspiracy charges. Ini Miney and Morgan Fey planned out Turner Grey's murder and followed through with their plan.
Turnabout Big Top: First-degree murder. Acro planned out Regina Berry's murder and followed through with his plan. Russell Berry was not his intended target but due to transferred intent, he's still guilty of first-degree. All that needs to be proven is that Acro knew someone would die because of his actions and wanted this result to occur.
Farewell, My Turnabout: First-degree murder with conspiracy charges. Matt Engarde paid Shelly De Killer to kill Juan Corrida and their murder plot was carried out. So even if Engarde didn't actually kill the man, he's still guilty since he masterminded the whole thing.
------------------------
TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS
Turnabout Memories: Second-degree murder (possibly first-degree under the "twinkling of an eye" approach). Dahlia actually planned to kill Phoenix Wright but was forced to change her plans after Phoenix's scuffle with Doug Swallow. So...it's technically 2nd degree but the prosecutor could argue she premeditated Doug's murder on the spot. In my opinion, it's a reasonable argument since she already had plans to kill Phoenix.
The Stolen Turnabout: First-degree murder. Luke Atmey planned out Kane Bullard's murder and followed through with his scheme.
Recipe for Turnabout: First-degree murder. An argument could be made for second-degree since Tigre only murdered Elg after the man won the lottery, indicating that it may have been an on-the-spot decision. However, a prosecutor could argue that Tigre planned to kill Elg in the first place since he was carrying a vial of poison on him. So, second-degree is the safe call, but first-degree is a strong possibility.
Turnabout Beginnings: Well, for starters, Terry Fawles should've been acquitted since his "murder victim" is alive. But for the actual case, Dahlia is guilty of first-degree. She planned out Valerie Hawthorne's death and followed through with her scheme.
Bridge to the Turnabout: Voluntary manslaughter. It's tempting to say second-degree but a really good defense attorney could argue that there are outside factors that need to be taken into account. It was in the heat of the moment, Godot was facing off against the woman who ruined his life, and his girlfriend's sister was in danger. Plus, Godot has an imperfect, defense-of-others claim since he had to stop Dahlia from killing Maya. So, I wouldn't say he gets second-degree due to these mitigating factors. He did intentionally kill someone but the circumstances should lower the charges. By the way, if anyone's confused about voluntary manslaughter, it's basically "excusable murder". You intentionally killed someone and it wasn't justifiable...BUT, the circumstances surrounding the murder are that a reasonable person would probably be driven into killing someone. It's still bad but the judge and jury understands why you did it.

More Roleswap AU Part 2: Defense Attorney Miles’ Frustrating Friendship with Prosecutor Phoenix
Tumblr media
Continuing from how Prosecutor Phoenix’s dysfunctional way of caring with people that mattered to him affects them, the one with Miles took a post of its own.
So from what I’ve said from my other post, “Phoenix has a big heart but it's twisted from growing up from Manfred's emotional abuse of control and shame. So if Phoenix's heart is a house, the door is open but they're only allowed on the porch, looking in but blocked by Phoenix himself from ever getting inside. ”
So how does this affects Miles Edgeworth?
When child Phoenix Wright suddenly moved out without warning, young Miles and Gregory treated it as a case that needed to be investigated. They found out that Phoenix’s parent died. That Manfred von Karma, whom Gregory had called out his evidence tampering, adopted him (Gregory didn’t like this at all). That Manfred moved back to Germany with Phoenix (Gregory didn’t like this at all even more). Gregory could only hope and assure Miles that since Manfred has a daughter, Manfred had taken in Phoenix sincerely. Miles was not convinced.
Miles tried writing letters to the address that Gregory had gotten. There was no response but they knew the letters were being received. Gregory tried to write a letter to Manfred but was replied with a formal but kind of deranged “fuck around and find out and it’s none of your beeswax and you will one day get retribution for marring my perfect record” letter. Gregory kept that letter to himself in order not to worry Mile who was looking forward to them meeting again as there is a possibility that Phoenix would become a lawyer too.
If Defense Attorney Wright had ADHD with no friendship degradation mechanics, I headcanon that Miles has autism with attachment to his childhood friendship with Phoenix.
He had tried online means of communicating years later. Phoenix doesn’t bother with facebook. Miles sent an email and got a superficial response. When he replied to that to build into it, it was ignored.
It doesn’t help at all when they met again as prosecutor and defense attorney with Gregory having been murdered and having to defend the daughter of a family friend that he had only heard of.
Prosecutor Phoenix felt anything but peace when Miles broke his perfect record. Of course, it would be the smart kid who had defended him who would defeat him. His once perfect record was the only thing that Manfred von Karma couldn’t touch of him, now Miles took that away in his idealistic righteousness of saving people who don’t deserve (funnily enough, Phoenix included himself in that). It didn’t help that Miles’ righteousness rubbed him the wrong way with how Miles had looked at him with anger and sadness and disappointment because who was he to feel? They were in a courtroom. (See Closed Off Phoenix mode)
When Will Powers got arrested, Phoenix knew that Miles is a big fan of Steel Samurai. He was going to rip Miles a new one in court with this case by getting a guilty verdict on his favorite actor. Much to Miles and Maya’s surprise, he changed his mind, not knowing it’s because Gumshoe told what happened with Dee Vasquez. (In this universe, Gumshoe had told Phoenix because despite their dysfunctional “friendship”, Prosecutor Phoenix is more approachable than Prosecutor Edgeworth)
Prosecutor Phoenix is just as surprised as them with his actions and hated himself for it. He wasn’t supposed to feel. Unlike Prosecutor Edgeworth who told Defense Attorney Wright that he doesn’t want to see him again, Prosecutor Phoenix did what von Karma would do to him: give him nothing. Defense Attorney Edeworth caught Phoenix’s eye and all Phoenix did was raised a brow and turn his back on him, little did Phoenix know, that had hurt Miles.
All Miles had wanted since Phoenix went away was to get his friend back. Maybe he had idealized the way childhood Phoenix had connected with him since it never happened again with other people his age growing up. Maybe that childhood Phoenix was gone. Logically, the best course of action was to move on, but it kinda hurt whenever he sees him.
The dynamic changed when Miles successfully defended Phoenix from murder of both cases. Phoenix was now more willing to talk to him but kept it professional. Miles who had always been socially awkward doesn’t know how to bridge the gap as much as he wanted to and as much as Maya tried to encourage him. Miles had tried to talk to Phoenix about what he had gone through because of Manfred but Phoenix would often try to keep it light. Phoenix does the 3 D’s: dodge, distract, dismiss. Any pushing further would upset the delicate balance that Miles was not confident to test.
After the Skye case, Phoenix felt he had no leg to stand on anymore. He had thought von Karma may have taught him, but all the cases he had won was through his own effort. Now, that was no longer true. Who was he anymore without the things that he used to believe in? It started to get worse when the pain and anger and grief and the nightmares that demanded to be felt came crashing down. Who was he without the constant battle with Manfred in and outside of his head? How could he?! Why had Phoenix never saw it before? He had failed people for becoming who he was. Do they even deserve...?
Phoenix was no stranger to blowing off shame and judgment. Also he worked best under high stress. So he went into Younger Beanix mode and created another identity to buy his tickets out of the country. Then when he met Miles again, intentionally made a dick move to anger him for a long time so that when Miles would hear that Phoenix left to take a sabbatical, he wouldn’t give a shit. Not to mention, Phoenix thought he didn’t deserve Miles care and he didn’t want to burden Miles with the need to save him again and again. He also blocked Franziska’s number and gave Gumshoe the wrong details of when he would leave and where just to cover his tracks.
Miles eventually figured out when he disappeared that Phoenix had hurt him to prevent him from intervening. He was mad Phoenix at once he realized that and mad at himself for not realizing it sooner. And upset that he wasn’t enough.
The emotional betrayal traumatized Miles when he already struggle with connecting with other people, especially when it’s Phoenix that he wanted to re-connect with the most.
Miles Edgeworth had already closed his heart on Phoenix since then. He would’ve refused any communication with Phoenix if it wasn’t for the Engarde case. They had reached a degree of closure after but Phoenix wasn’t done with his sabbatical.
As far as Phoenix was concerned, he wasn’t equal yet to Miles in terms of searching for the truth in the courtroom. With the best intentions, he was chasing after Miles professionally in quality. But within their friendship, some damage has been done. Phoenix still has the struggle to allow Miles and himself to be vulnerable without the need to dismiss, distract and dodge. In fact, he owed Kay, Gumshoe, Sebastian and Franziska of it too. And while Miles has partially opened his door to Phoenix again, he has to learn and trust Miles again beyond their professional partnership.
What About Trucy Gramarye?
Fortunately, Prosecutor Phoenix was in a better place by the time Trucy came around. When he was back in Japanifornia after Zak left Trucy, Phoenix sees a kid greeting him with a showman’s bravado in the face of abandonment and in the mercy strange adults. He cannot not adopt her and get her away from the mess.

YESSS ACE ATTORNEYYYY i have so many thoughts but i never talk about it lol
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most)
honestly maya i REALLY love her shes so fun but also has a deep story but sadly newer games denied her a character arc in so much as growing up (not that she cant still be goofy but there should be a difference between her being like 15 and 23) but yes really good choice to have her as your companion in most of the cases
but also shes my blorbo in the way i think wayyy to much about the whole implications of the fey clan and the overarching plot of the first 3 games
also also FRANMAYA NATION
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
PEARLY shes everything wah wah wah wah wah i love that she gets to be a rowdy little girl yess violence yess running 40 miles in sandals yesss slapping phoenix wright!!!!! her relation to deliah and iris is also soooo interesting to me!!
she was also done dirty by the newer games but i know she still visits all the time and she and trucy are besties on sight!!!!

Franziska Von Karma is so fucking funny bc she shows up in Trials and Tribulations like *Tfw your little brother fuckin kills himself over some STUPID guy he knew in grade school and just reunited with and you find out they WEREN’T even DATING and he STILL did?!? So of course you go to kick the guy’s ass on his behalf for ruining your life by getting your brother killed, the BITCH* and she shows up like “Heckin HATE you Phoenix” and Nick is like “You hate me??? Why; I don’t even know you.” & she goes “YOU KNOW WHY.” & the idiot man goes “Oooooh, yeah; because of your Dad. Sorry.” & she’s just like “MY DAD THE MURDERER ASSHOLE?! BITCH! IM HERE BC MY BROTHER KILLED HIMSELF OVER YOU AND YOU DONT EVEN CARE ENOUGH TO REALISE what you’ve DONE?!? I’LL BITE YOUR HEAD OFF!!!” and the best part is Nick is so thick he /still/ doesn’t get it; I don’t think he ever figured it out. I love it; comedy gold
