Fictional characters are more Concept than Person.

Something I came across on Twitter the other day that made me go, “yes, this is exactly what I’ve been trying to put into words for a hot min!”

I still (futilely, perhaps) hope that the antis or people who are otherwise heavy into fandom discourse internalize this. Fictional characters are nothing but a concept, so to attach morality to them in any way is very flawed.

It may be hard to hear for some of y’all, but what you engage in fictionally has no bearing on anything materially. There’s staunch lesbians who will buss it wide open for male characters. There’s people who wouldn’t harm a fly who are comfortable regularly consuming extremely dark or taboo media. There are literally no rules to this shit, no 1:1 relation of fictional preferences to real life values. To believe otherwise does not make you safer, but it does keep you dangerously naive and easily manipulated.

If you cannot maintain an appropriate psychological distance between who you are as a person and the media you create/consume, that is a problem, not a virtue. Well-adjusted individuals treat fiction as an escape and not a stand in for being a Good Person™️. If more folks settled with this, then at least 90% of the heated discourse/witch hunts in fandoms wouldn’t exist and we’d be much better off for it.

there's so much manga i have to read it's unreal 😭

#for physicals i have 13 volumes of yona of the dawn. all of the rose of versailles. the first volume of the illustrated guide to monster #girls. and i need to reread tbhk or at least the first volume bc i told one of my kids at work that i'd let him read it while he's at the #program and i need to brush up on it bc it's been over a year. #and then for manga i don't have physicals of. i desperately need to reread and then catch up on kuro. considering everything the fact that #don't own the full series is a miracle probably prompted by how much my parents hated it up until the last few months when they suddenly #chilled tf out. i should get caught up on yuri is my job and finish killer in love. also i've sat down to read cocoon intertwined like 24 #times and gotten distracted and didn't every single one. i've been meaning to reread ohshc and pick up kamisama kiss. fruits basket. #vampire knight. nana. the apothecary diaries and chainsaw man. and i should give goodnight punpun a proper read too #then there's all of clamp's works in release order bc i have two volumes of tsubasa but haven't touched them bc i need to go in #release order or i'll die. and now that i think about it i'm really behind on oshi no ko #+ i have a full google doc of manga i need to get too and this is just what i can think of off the top of my head so god knows #what else is in there #romeo.txt

slowly, slowly, slowly learning how to bridge the gap in my teaching between overexplaining and underexplaining so I hit that exact sweet spot of getting the kids to the place where they’re interacting with a text that is absolutely over their heads and out of their leagues but their excitement, generated by me but sustained by them, and the right amount of scaffolding and explanation lifts them up to be able to meet it, enjoy it, learn from it, be affected by it.

GOOD. #it helps that the guy who plays malcolm is young and cute #tbh i would never underestimate the importance of that #me choosing my shakespeare adaptations carefully so they get to look at someone young and beautiful enough for a period of time #anyway teaching has been just the absolute doldrums for a couple months now and this feels like a nice break and streak of light #like i just can't ever rule out the possibility that their hearts can be caught by something that we're reading #despite my common sense telling me not to put too much stock into their emotional reactions #because doing so would lead to my burnout and bitterness #because you can't force anyone to fall in love #but you can set the stage and clear the rubbish and lay the fire for lighting #and just wait for a spark to catch #anyway this tension between the orderliness and peace and box checking that i WANT to be a part of my room ..... #and the moment of a student just suddenly being illuminated. inspired. in love !!!!!!! #i love it. i love it a lot!

#For some reason I always end up predicting my life events through the fiction I write or read with scary accuracy #especially if everything I’m writing/consuming “feels right” and like I’m being pulled into it #I was just pulled into The Metamorphosis and woke up in the middle of the night to finish reading it #I think I know who that book applies to #And now this book… hm #Don’t like that #unreality #magical thinking #tagging as that just in case but it’s happened before multiple times #They’re not necessarily actual premonitions; they’re me subconsciously piecing together a puzzle of clues #that all lead to me figuring out the most likely series of events to follow #Maybe I’ve heard in-depth information about these books before; but only remember it in the back of my mind #so that the front of my mind cannot recall; and have only been guided by what I’ve heard whispered back there #a subconscious switch gets thrown at the critical point and I’m drawn to it #I knew what happened and what was going to happen in 2018 back in 2017 from my sketchbooks and story outlines #I read Crime and Punishment and like clockwork events very similar to what had happened in the book started happening to me #It worked backwards for awhile from 2019–2021 after I got caught #Every time I happened to glance at a clock; there was either a 4 or a 20 or a 24 on the display. Always. No exceptions. #This went on for months. Those numbers were part of a spell I wrote and recited over and over again; I won’t say the words #because I’m not sure if it’s so much a spell as it is a curse — it is a self-deprecating spell #I only started seeing this number pattern AFTER I had been caught as an apostate; not before #before I’d look at the clock and it would say 5:33 or 9:15 or 12:45; after it was 4:04 or 2:24 or 12:20 ON THE DOT #Call me crazy but if every time you looked at a clock for MONTHS it always read a specific set of numbers you’d go a little nutty too #THEN in 2021 I read 1984 and it described my life up until that point PERFECTLY (WITH the number 4 plastered all over it) #Something happened back then and it’s still fucking happening because I was caught at the end of 2019 #Just a little over four years away from the year 2024 and I was driven to set my exit date at 4/24/2024 before reading 1984 #1984 is set in April 4 1984; April 4 is 20 days away from 4/24… SEE WHAT I MEAN?!
