Aug Summary + Takeaways

Okay, straight off the bat, the timeline for this month is a mess. So many conflicting dates for just about everything. I tried real hard, but I hit my limit as a non-Chinese speaker. So consider this all to be sketchy.

Let's hit on the significant moments point by point:

DD's birthday!

There's some disagreement as to what happened on 8/4 vs what happened on 8/5. As near as I can tell, we get them filming the rooftop fight, the bug chase, the stargazing, and the birthday countdown on 8/4.

On 8/5, DD does the livestream during a lunch (?). GG is filming solo scenes for a bit, then DD joins him when they fight off the Wen owl. Then they do the post-timeskip market scene. This also includes a moment with dd being a chaotic gremlin while gg is being serious and working thru a scene with the juniors. After finishing his takes, gg walks up to dd with what I called the "indulgent dom" face. It's the only way I know how to describe it, but y'all have seen this expression before. It's identical to the expression he had when DD bratted at the Nanjing fanmeet by refusing to make a cute face.

(I'm not making any particular statement about them actually being dom/sub here. Just...some moments have big dom energy and this is one of them)

(also, since @deadeyellentigh expressed an interest in gg's codeswitching, this is also another instance when it pops up)

After filming ends for the day, they do the cake and gift exchange.

They are presumably in a relationship at this point, so odds are, there were other celebrations in private that we weren't privy to.

All the fucking interviews

Excuse my language, but within a 3-day timespan, there are night/day interviews with yb and dd, gg, and ggdd. JL has a couple interview/measuring sessions with them individually. There's an on-set interview when they're sitting in front of a rockface of some sort. Then the Sina interviews and the interview on the white couch and the outdoors interview with gg calling DD gouzaizai and oh God why are there so many fucking interview clips????

The yb interviews seem to take place around filming close-ups for some fight scenes on 8/7. GG will interview with yb while dd does some takes, then they switch. There's another nighttime yb interview clip on 8/8 with both gg and dd. And then on 8/9, yb does the awkward waist-measuring interview.

Why does yb interview them on 3 different days? Or should this all be on one day? The latter seems more likely, but the sources I'm using have varying dates for varying clips from these interviews so *throws hands up in air*

Ok, back to ggdd

Sorry, I just wanted to rant convey how shaky the timeline is this month. The Weibo timeline I was checking against doesn't have anything for Aug, so I was working with fewer sources.

The first part of the month seems good for them. They're playful, clearly having fun, but also just glomming together and chatting between themselves between takes.

The 8/10 exchange with jc is interesting to me. Again, I'm basing my understanding from a YouTube video I've seen, and there's every chance that video is misleading. Just watching the unedited, untranslated clip, it does look as if gg's a little freaked out by something while dd is trying to reassure him, but it's really impossible to know what they're all talking about. There was a lot going on on the set that wasn't related to ggdd, and honestly, I have the impression that their relationship was widely known about. As such, it shouldn't have been something that jc had to discover through a photo. He likely had known about it since the start.

The end approaching

The last week or so leading up to the end of filming is a bit of a roller coaster. On 8/16, they have lots of fun filming fight scenes together. On 8/18, gg sings Sam Smith to dd. I think a lot of what gg busts out singing on set is a little random (sometimes, you just get an earworm), but this is clearly meaningful given the way he's directing it at dd.

So at this point, gg and dd seem to be in a good place. I don't know if they've been discussing what happens after filming. I don't know if they've already agreed to try to make it work. Maybe they're avoiding the topic. Maybe they're not on the same page. But on 8/18, gg and dd seem ok.

Then in 8/20, we get the cloud recess library scene. This scene has a lot of fun clips, but I've also seen another clip from that day (unless there's another cloud recess library scene day that I'm missing -- a very real possibility). I've only seen this clip translated once, so I don't know how accurate it is.

But it's a clip of an extended pretzeling session between the two. I've seen shorter clips of the pretzeling, but I'd never seen the full scene or context until I randomly came across it one day.

The scene starts with gg angry about something dd said about him. DD asks gg if he's gonna add him back on WeChat. gg says after filming, they'll go their own ways and won't have to see each other. DD asks how he could say something like that. (Sidenote: I will not link to this clip. Please do not ask.)

It's honestly uncomfortable to watch, and if the translation is accurate, then it's obvious the bts caught a couple argument. I have some reservations about it bc, honestly, the other clips at the library don't have any hint of tension between them. Was this something that happened after? At the end of the clip, they do walk past the camera as if leaving the set.

There's reasons to consider the clip with some skepticism. First, the translation I saw could be wrong. I usually like to see 2 different translator's versions before I consider a clip really solid. I've only ever seen one on this. Otoh, even without the translation, both gg and dd seem upset in the clip and the atmosphere isn't playful. (Made even weirder by the fact that it was included in one of those "cute ggdd moments" compilations. Y'all, I got thoughts on some of the stuff on Youtube). Still, maybe the scene isn't as ugly as that translation makes it appear.

Another possibility goes back to what I've been saying from the beginning: we are seeing so little of what actually happened. 20 minutes out of a day of filming. Maybe 30. On rare cases, an hour. Maybe gg and dd made up after that clip but before filming ended. Maybe they went through 5 breakup/makeup cycles before filming ended. Maybe the scene didn't happen on 8/20 at all. Maybe there's stuff happening around the scene that changes the context completely.

So take it or leave it. I'm inclined to think the translation is relatively accurate. If the translator wanted a cute ggdd moment, they could have tried a lot harder. That's the opposite of a cute moment. And while the tone of this clip may contrast with the clips around it, I also don't think that's necessarily a strong point against it.

As an example, the next day, 8/21, when gg is sick, they seem okay but there's every possibility they are being cautious about their arguments in front of the camera. If they're like me and my wife, they're able to put an argument on hold to attend to whatever responsibility they have. My wife and I had an argument right before hosting some friends for dinner. We just...pretended through the whole night. Then, once people were gone, we finished up the fight.

DD and gg are actors, and gg, especially, is good at schooling his expression. We know dd routinely lies during interviews with ease. They're both able to put on a guise of being okay. As usual, we're seeing such a small slice of what's going on with these clips. There is every possibility this was an ongoing argument between them that they kept from the camera (excepting that one scene in the library).

At the same time, gg was singing Sam Smith to dd just 2 days before the argument. What happened between 8/18 and 8/20 to create such tension? The only clip I have from 8/19 is of gg filming solo. Something happened that led gg to attempt to cut contact with dd.

On the other hand, some couples are just a bit volatile, with a lot of back and forth happening within a short amount of time. This can especially be the case with young couples where both people have strong personalities.

The next days after 8/20 are the final shots and then the wrap events. They seem fine, for the most part. However, there is the moment on the steps at wrap when they hit each other.

@bzhitstruth noted that the fight here is real, and I tend to agree. Dd was notably late to the big cast and crew photo. Then, during the line up, dd said something when it finished that seemed to upset gg. That's when gg reaches behind the person between them to whap dd and dd whaps back. Everybody laughs, but gg and dd's expressions are serious rather than playful.

After, dd looks like he's gonna follow gg down the stairs but he stops himself and just lingers. Then they're both called over for another photo. GG's pretty cheerful and bouncy but DD barely smiles.

I'd been skeptical of the rumor that gg changed his WeChat or something to break off contact with dd after filming, but after going through these clips, I think it's at least plausible. GG may not have changed his number, but he apparently unfriended (or whatever) dd around 8/20.

It really seems as if gg was prepared to break things off, against dd's wishes. Even when considering the whole "gg needed a break after filming" possibility, I didn't think their separation was so acrimonious, but it looks like it was pretty dramatic and oftentimes hostile.

But there's ambiguity here. There's room for disagreement. I'm leaning towards the "bad breakup" interpretation, but there's room for other takes, and if you think that things left off on a more hopeful note, I wouldn't blame you. We know they eventually got together, after all.

The after

On that note, our knowledge of the after is even sketchier. We know gg went on a trip to Japan and dd wore the "I miss you" hat. If gg did delete dd as a contact on WeChat, then the hat was really dd's only way to communicate with him.

Next we know, dd visited gg for his birthday on 10/5. I have a litany of questions for this.

Who contacted who and how after the Japan trip? Did gg reopen chat with dd? Or did dd find some other way to contact gg? Had gg made up his mind during the Japan trip to get into a relationship or was that a decision he made after?

Of course, without that tell-all book, we have no way of knowing any of this. That's what fanfic is for, I guess.

But it's clear that they're together in 2019. It's at that point that dd introduces gg to his DDU brothers, and then they start doing the promo events that include so many interview moments that hint at a relationship between them. So while the last we see of them during filming was tense and unresolved, we know they both chose to work things out and make a proper go of a relationship. Well, dd seemed to never waver on that, so it was up to gg to make that commitment. He clearly did.

I kinda hate to leave this project off on such a downer, tbh. I hadn't really thought through the possibility that they had an ugly break-up at the end of filming, but there we are. I feel bad for them that their early-relationship dirty laundry is out there for the world to see. I'd hate for some of my early relationship dramatics to be caught on camera. (Thus why I will not share the clip of them arguing)

So let's end on an up-note. We know they're together even now. We have a new LRLG rumor just last week. We can see they've both committed to and grown into their relationship.

The latest rumor is long and is full of sweet moments, but there's also a bit where dd talks about his relationship with his staff. I think we can take the current state of their relationship from what he says:

"Date in a way that makes you comfortable. Work through the differences and it will be okay."

Assuming this isn't all fake. Cause it probably is.

I'm gonna do an overall summary + takeaway from this project for some stuff that didn't fit into any individual month (professionalism on set, possibility of devil's timeline, "it's complicated" relationship status, etc). Probably this weekend. Watch this space.

Hi to you. What is all this speculation that XZ is with Ren Min? Probably based on how they behaved in the BTS but 👀👀. This is in reference to him wiping her tears off camera. His recent Douyin video also shows him staring at her in a sus way.

I honestly didn't even know that was happening... so I can't say what exactly it's about 😬 But then again, I guess I should expect this cuz it happens every time, doesn't it? Zhan-ge and LiQin have had cp fans since 2017. Heck, Zhan-ge and DiliReba have cp fans although they've literally never interacted. And Yibo even got shipped with his married co-star. I'm sure ggdd expect this sort of thing to a certain extent. If the XZ and RenMin ship gets to be too much (as in people spreading harmful and untrue rumors) then I can guarantee that XZ Studio will take action by making a statement and also shutting their cp topic down if necessary (like in 2019).

It's funny, I actually got the impression that the lady might have gotten a little crush on Zhan-ge cuz imo, she looks at him in a sus way and not the other way around (we mainly see his face in this video but there's plenty of others lol). Not trying to speculate that she's in love with him but if she were, it would be impossible for Zhan-ge to return those feelings. I don't actually know what's being said in this video but even without knowing that, I watched this and admired gg's dedication to deliver the best performance they can. And him, wiping her tears off is just sweet. Or at least it looks sweet but we can't see how uncomfortable this really makes him cuz gg is too good of an actor. It's actually kinda sad how simple-mindedly and shallowly a lot of his own fans "read" him so to say. They believe exactly what he presents even though gg actually touched upon his different selves in a recent interview. Regardless, we know better than to speculate about him and any lady cuz even though he painstakingly has to hide who he actually loves and is wholly committed to; we know.

A turtle’s every question

If you are a turtle, eventually, you’ll answer this question: What moment made you BJYXSZD?

So it’s technically July 9 for me - the 2nd anniversary of this Yizhan Happy Camp appearance taped on this day in 2019. Oh, and what a happy event it was!

[CPN ahead. Fake. Do not take it seriously]

Fan meets, variety show appearances, and interviews still had me questioning my sanity, but everything about this episode falls in place.

This episode was not scripted - GGDD participated as guests. We can see both in a relaxed, fun environment, just being themselves (if one can be in front of an audience). The main topic of the day is garbage classification of all things!

This episode presents a multitude of opportunities to see their relationship.  Most of the items listed below are found from fancam, including this [see this YT account for more]. The official episode is hilarious and educational as well. I initially watched for GGDD but ended up watching the entire thing. Let’s start with the obvious where GGDD:

Matched outfit with long white sleeve. GGDD are the only two there wearing this.

Made constant eye contact; tracked where the other person was from the beginning of the episode to the end. They always knew where the other was. There was a moment when GG moved during the game. DD looked down and looked back up and didn’t see GG. The look on his face as he tried to locate GG.

Paid attention to each other more than others.  There were many instances where they walked and talked together, ignored the rest of the guests and hosts. 

Reported/whispered to each other. DD told GG what the anti-freeze-looking drink tastes like. The host had to call their attention back. 

Concerned when one got hurt by a special necklace. GG’s eyes almost left his face when he saw DD hurt. DD stepped toward GG to show him his boo-boo. GG’s face is one of worried, and love. This is such a tender moment.

Wore the special necklace during the game. Either DD forgot to take it off or didn’t want to take it off. We know of its importance to DD, who subconsciously touched his neck, checking to make sure it was there. Although some lipreaders say that DD confirmed it was a gift from GG, that is just another facet to ponder.

Waved at the other with a sweet smile. You’re on different teams; you’re friends with other people. Why are you just waving at one another? 

Threw the game to allow the other to win. DD running in the opposite direction to enable GG to go through first. And then DD followed up with a confused look as to why he went in another direction.  

Forgot their teammates. It seems GGDD was just playing the game together. Poor WZC didn’t know where to go.

Was not happy when the other was tackled by another. GG lost a bit of his usual calmness there when he saw the scuffle on the floor between DD and WDX

Performed a dance together and ended it with a hip hop couple pose. Now have GGDD performed a dance like that with another?

The most direct clue of their relationship is during the photo session. The conversation has been debated and translated in a few different ways. I’m going to offer my translation. 

The idiom “old cow eat green/tender grass” is a common reference for the significant age difference between two people in a relationship. Implying that GG is older, you can see the slight snarl in his laugh, not being too happy about that. Note that this phrase doesn’t have to be spoken by those in a relationship. For example, a friend can say to his friend about his friend’s relationship with his s/o. If that was the case, the friend would just smile and shrug it off. What made this different? GG’s reaction and the way he was coming in closer to DD. This confirms who’s the cow and who’s the grass.

The following phrase, “do not repair/fix your brake pads,” has been translated differently. Some say it’s about GG controlling the purse and threatened to put the kibosh on DD, literally fixing his brake pads. Hence, there is implied sharing of finances here. This doesn’t make sense as both are similar earners and don’t really need to share finances, but it could be symbolic.

My mother (& granny) commonly used this idiom to warn me when I said or do something I shouldn’t have. It means to put a brake on it, fix myself, do not proceed to where I am heading because I am heading into trouble waters, a no-good-would-come-of-it kind of thing. In today’s comparison, it is similar to put a filter on it.  As a teenager, I was constantly told to “fix my brake” when I say out of turn or speak back with disrespect. This makes sense to me. GG is usually telling DD to zip it, don’t be naughty!

This episode alone was not the only reason, but it certainly did cement it

BTS in Order August Pt 1

The timeline for all the interviews during this period are, frankly, a mess. There are multiple interview segments taken over multiple days, with different sources having different dates, usually only 1 or 2 days apart. Without being able to read Chinese, it is impossible to get this straightened out, so I did my best. Just consider 8/7-8/9 to be a big mushy mess of interviews segments. In each case, I put things on the date I thought most likely while including the alternate date(s) in parentheses.

8.1 ggdd outside. Wen indoctrination. DD is teasing gg for how many lines he has to memorize - A crowd scene with ggdd in a row with jl next to DD and jc next to gg. Gg and DD are in their own world, chatting and smiling at each other.

8.2 ggdd. Cloud recess lectures. Jl has bag of snacks and passes it to jc. Dd points accusingly (playfully) at gg. - A bunch of the cast are eating together. Dd has gg's phone, and gg keeps giving him amused looks. Gg in black hoodie. Jc, yl, and jl. Dd in black hoodie joins later. Then jzx. After, a couple women show gg a few bags with stuff. The others are still eating behind them. When gg gets back to table, DD is gone. (So, DD was still there when gg walked back. Then the camera cuts and DD is gone while gg is at table)

8.2 outside, burial mounds era. they're filming the scene where wn wakes up. Dd disappears early on so it's gg and yb. Ah..dd is doing wire work with his guqin - Later, DD feints kneeing gg in the groin. Then a clip of both of them going nuts on the sunscreen. - Wq joins them. - They change into post-timeskip costumes at same location.

8.3 ggdd. Gg roasts DD for sending selfies to him. (Alt 7.8) - Dd retaliates by showing everyone the pouty photo of gg. (Alt 7.8) - Clip of them running in place, shot from behind. Dd steals gg's tea. Seems like the first time from gg's reaction. (Alt 7.8)

8.3 market scene with jl and ggdd. Dd and gg pass a mirror back and forth while having a convo. In between them, in the bg, are their doubles, also standing side by side. It's a funny shot.

8.4 DD helps gg climb over railing on roof. Then it rains and there's that shot of gg reaching his hand out to the rain from the roof shelter place (alt 8.3)

8.4 ggdd more of the early market scene (yin iron era) - Gg and DD are punching each other in the shoulder. - A little swordplay. Then gg tries to put away his sword but DD keeps batting his sword at gg.

8.4 gg only. Scene with wwx taking jc to get his core replaced.

8.4 evening, gg chases DD with a bug - Also filming the first rooftop fight - Romantic rooftop stargazing - Birthday countdown

8.5 DD only. The awful livestream.

8.5 gg doing wire work in a forest with a DD double. Gg's doing a bunch of fight-y stuff. - Dd appears when gg's fighting off a fake owl. - They're chatting while gg's makeup is being touched up and DD pointedly looks at the camera. I've never seen this clip, so I don't know what they're saying.

8.5 gg walking down yi city street with Lil Apple.

8.5 Market scene. Gg tells DD to smile. Dd does. The blonde ponytail guy cracks up. Dd asks for green tea. gets it. - a scene with ggdd and juniors. Gg is with juniors and DD is being a disruptive gremlin. Leaving the juniors, gg walks up to DD with an indulgent dom expression They bicker a bit, but it doesn't seem serious.

8.5 ggdd Birthday cake and prezzies!

8.6 DD in blue robes. When lwj talks to mianmian at jinlintai. Dd is rubbing his throat a lot and puts his hand to his head a few times. Might be sick. - Then DD has a scene with lhk.

8.6 ggdd post-timeskip with lhk. - Then DD and lhk back at cloud recess - Gg doing takes of the fight down the steps of the jinlintai. Lwj is a double. - Ggdd the giggly run down the stairs - In the evening, dark, gg and DD standing beside each other, talking. Assistants hold an umbrella over both of them. Bright lights and blue screen in background. Also, jin ling wandering around like he's lost. Then they film the scene where jin ling stabs wwx. Gg and DD chat between takes 8.7 yb interview gg. Cloud recess outfit. Night. There's a bit where gg interacts with an animated creature. I've never seen this. - Oh! He draws the good health rabbit!

8.7 yb interview DD. Evening. I think they're outside while gg is doing some blue screen closeups. - Oh, this is where yb says the lans are poor and DD points out his Jade pendant.

8.7 DD does blue screen wire work. then gg joins, though no wires. They're doing shots from their cloud recess sword fight. Between takes they chat, though they seem tense. Dd seems dismissive and gg seems concerned and annoyed that DD is dismissive. I wonder if they're talking about DD's health problem? I don't know when his visit to the hospital happened. (to be fair, dd doesn't know when his visit to the hospital happened either)

8.7 DD does some blue screen closeups with a wwx double

8.7 then gg and DD outside but under a tent or something with a roof. Gg is spraying DD with bug spray. Then they talk about about something. I don't know what. People off camera are giggling.

8.8 another Sina interview clip. This has the part where gg rats out DD for using his own memes. And DD says it's just in case gg wants to save them to use. (Alt 8.9) - Also I think this is the first time DD talks about gg's ability to cry on cue. Like a switch. - Also, DD looks very shy and pleased when gg says good things about him. (Leos like praise)

8.8 nighttime yb interviews with ggdd - Dd makes gg wear a cat ears headband briefly

8.9 sword fight on cloud recesses rocks. Dd gets minor injury on hand. Brats about it. (Alt 8.8) - I think this is the instigator of the spicy wontons conversation, but I've never seen a clip of that conversation so I don't know much more than that. - DD in blue robes with gg and jc. Outside. The director is walking them thru the scene where they discover the Chang massacre - Gg and DD bicker for a bit. Then they do a bro handshake. But then DD starts talking to the camera as if arguing his case. Gg laughs and protests - Jc is such a third wheel. Poor guy. - ggdd gawking at a bug bite on jc's neck (alt 8.8)

8.9 ggdd side by side in cloud recess outfits. Gg hands DD a mirror to check his ribbon. Gg shows DD something on his phone. They talk quietly for a bit. Then a kid in a red shirt comes over and gg talks to the kid while DD sits back and watches. (Alt 8.8) - Lhk is in the background reading - Then they both do a bit with the little creature that showed up in the 8.7 interviews. - Yb interviews lhk. Then DD does a Sina interview, then gg does one. But almost as soon as gg says something, DD whaps him from off camera. - ddgg sina interview with yb. Waist measuring (alt 8.8) - Gg and DD share eyedrops - A lot of official clips are pulled from this day

8.9 gg then DD on set interview (alt 7.8 or 8.7). The one on the white couch where gg calls DD a lunatic. - Gg joins DD and sits basically right on top of him. Big dom "who hits who" moment. - Also, gg pulling up his robes. Wow.

Hi, I’ve been wondering this for a while... given how popular both GG and DD are, I would be really amazed if there were no pictures of them together taken by paparazzi or fans. But there seems to be none. I hate to say this but realistically there must be greedy people out there who would jump at profiting from selling their pictures to the media. And it seems that the rumors are that they interact with each other outside of their living space. Anyway, I was wondering what your thoughts were. Thanks!

Hi! I want to start this off by saying that this is fake, this is fanfiction, and is purely my personal opinion on the topic, so please don’t take this as fact. Other people may have a different take, and that’s perfectly fine - the only 2 people who really know what’s what are GGDD. The rest of us are mere spectators, trying to guess at the truth. 

Now, with that said, I’m going to break this post into photos taken of them during the Untamed, and photos taken of them post-Untamed. Why? Because I think the amount of photos and BTS of taken during the filming of the Untamed have shaped people’s expectations on the amount of material that they expect to find on GGDD post-Untamed, and I want to talk a bit about why we should be happy that there isn’t more material on them post-Untamed.

So I think there’s some fandom consensus that whatever started between them really solidified/became serious when they began filming the Untamed. I say this because of some of the things that came out from the BTS - for example, the birthday BTS, and DD’s post the next day gives me a very strong impression that for him, at least, was when he had made up his mind about GG. So I’m going to hazard a guess and say that that was when they really decided how they wanted to take things forward. 

Now, if we go by that timeline, there are plenty of pictures and videos of them, and all of those can be excused by the fact that they’re co-workers who have to work in close proximity with each other - literally, the very nature of their respective characters means that they share plenty of scenes. To me, this is the perfect cover for a budding relationship, where you can constantly be around and touch someone you’re interested in and pass it off as “guys being guys and hanging out and roughhousing”. So what I’m trying to get at is that there are tons of pictures of GGDD together during this time - just that it makes it harder for people to sort out whether it’s pictures of co-workers hanging out, or whether it’s something more. (I mean it’s easy for us, but that’s because we’re all clowns!)

However, there’s one set of photos that stick out to me, and that’s the Dragon Boat festival. You can read more about that here. I’m going to guess and say that that was probably the first time that GGDD was aware of the spotlight on them - the spotlight being the world outside the bubble of the Untamed set. Sure, there were cameras pointed at them all the time while they were on set, but that’s on set, where there’s an expectation that they would be filmed. This was the paps trying to catch DD on a date with his “girlfriend”, and finding GG there instead. Then after that, the Untamed blew up, and suddenly the whole world was looking at them. I don’t think anyone in the cast or crew expected to find this much level of success - yes, there was already a set fanbase from the books, but this not only turned out to be a massive hit in China, it also swept through Southeast Asia and even caught the attention of people halfway around the globe in America and Europe. Now, if the Dragon Boat photos had put them on alert, the resulting craze for the Untamed would only make them more wary. 

The Untamed aired from June to August 2019. According to this incredible post, GGDD’s last joint interview was the Thailand fan meet in September 2019. That’s also the last time we have “good” BTS videos and photos of them - because any interactions between them could easily be explained away as them promoting the show. After that, with exception of when they meet at award shows or for official events, it seems like the amount of BTS photos and videos of them together abruptly drop off, so it’s natural that some fans wonder why it is, when they’re supposedly so close. 

My guess is that post-Untamed, they’ve become much more aware of the number of eyes watching them. They know the lengths that some fans will go to, and they’re very careful to take precautions and surround themselves with people they know they can trust. And the lengths that they go to protect their privacy can be extreme - I’m linking to this old article to highlight that as far back as 2019, GG was already engaging in defensive tactics to try and avoid crazy fans. Last year, there was a period where they began adopting each other’s style to the point that on a casual glance, people mistook GG as DD and vice versa. There was some speculation that they did this on purpose so in the event that someone actually saw them, they would have assumed that it was actually the other person. (ie. if someone saw GG exiting DD’s hotel but dressed like how DD would have dressed, they would have assumed it was DD). 

In addition, there were clips that showed how uncomfortable both of them were when they realised the full extent of how much BTS there was, and how much BTS had been released. If anything, that would probably only reinforce their need for discretion. Keep in mind that while China has decriminalised homosexuality, however, LGBT folk are still discriminated against. Any photos or videos of them that can’t be explained away would have a serious impact on their careers, so I’m not surprised that they’re now very careful about what they do and how they behave around each other publicly, which might be a stark contrast on how they used to behave around each other when filming the Untamed. You can see how stiff and formal they are around each other at official awards and events, and this is the reason why. 

Also, keep in mind that they’re also both busy professionals with very hectic schedules, and who probably don’t have a lot of opportunities to physically meet, and the lack of photos or videos of them together post-Untamed would make a lot of sense.

It’s also good that they’re not always collaborating professionally (even though a collaboration would mean that they would get to legitimately spend time with each other). Both of them are trying to move beyond the label of 小鲜肉 (literally, little fresh meat), which can have negative connotations - ie. they’re just a pretty face with no talent. Their success outside of the Untamed and outside of each other proves that they’re not just one-trick ponies who only are only famous or successful because of fan service, and that’s good.

However! 2020 was kind of an incredible year for how much DD slipped up during TTXS (and on other shows). There were so many instances where he said something that left his brothers scrambling to cover for him. Others have done a far more detailed and better job in covering some of these instances here and here. You have infer a bit more, and you don’t get everything laid out for you in a photo or a BTS video, but their interactions are still there - just in a different form.

Day 24: Funniest BJYX Moment

My new goal is to finish this challenge by the end of the month year. Let's go!

Put the two of them together and chaos usually ensue. I don't exactly have one top moment cos they are often very funny together but here are some of my favourite GGDD moments.

1) Happy Camp

The whole episode is a gem (seriously, go watch it if you haven't already) but one of the best and funniest moments was when they had a face-off (ard 27:00) during the first game, and DD just shouting ''ahhhhh'' for damn long, and GG was just rattling off the answers.

2) Sina interview

I love the whole interview but this particular segment at 13:00 always makes me laugh. The interviewer was asking DD if he now dares to sleep alone with the lights switched off. While DD was trying to answer the question (very seriously in a cute manner), gremlim GG kept annoying and interrupting him, to the point where DD had to ask him to shut up twice. Will we ever see GGDD behaving so candidly in interviews again?

I don't know why antis like to use the last part of this interview as supporting evidence against SZD. It's obvious from their interaction here that they are very very comfortable with each other. Who would dare to keep annoying their co-worker during an actual work interview, and who would ask their co-worker to shut up multiple times and call them mental in the middle of an interview.

5 times TU bts had me 👀  even as a non-bxg

I was thinking back to when I wasn’t a bxg but watched the TU bts because I really liked TU (believe it or not, I actually watched more bts of not-ggdd because I thought the shippers were kinda crazy....look at me now 🤡  hahahaha). I was thinking of instances that stood out to me to be “weird” back then, although of course writing this now, there will be hindsight bias.

Also, I realized I attributed a lot of “weird” thing to basically some level of incompetency of dd, and I want to apologize ahead of time. DD I really didn’t understand you! I’m sorry!

1) Waterfall scene - Obviously, I could tell gg was lying through his teeth and it was strange. Back then, I attributed it to gg wasn’t sure if the ending waterfall scene will be aired and he didn’t want to “spoil the ending” or disappoint audience if it didn’t happen to air. However, this theory turn out to be false when I looked into it later. First of all, the ending waterfall scene with them standing on the rocks appears in the opening song so there was no need to worry people won’t be able to see it. Secondly, the location of the waterfall dd was talking about was actually the waterfall when they were sparring behind Cloud Recesses, so not even the ending scene. And there was nothing strange within the scene that need to be conceal. 

Also dd was so adamant about wanting gg to know what he was talking about. Again, I apologize, I attributed this to dd was not good at reading cues from gg and them having “bad chemistry.” But thinking of it now, it’s possible dd was doing it on purpose (gremlin) and wanted gg to acknowledge it cuz it was important to him. This whole thing is a mystery still of today but it being more of a bjyx thing than general worrying about spoiling the show thing might make more sense now.

2) Flute- There was an interview when the interviewer asked what prop dd wanted to take home (dd was interviewing alone.) He said he wanted to take Bichen home. The interviewer asked why. Dd said it was because gg was taking Chengqing (the flute) home and he went on and on about how pretty the flute was and the material it was made out of. When I saw the interview back then, I thought it was strange that he didn’t answer about Bichen. The normal response to why you wanted a certain prop would be how much it meant to you filming, or even how cool you thought it was. But instead, dd was more focused on someone else’s prop and his reasoning for wanting to take it home was cuz someone else was taking something else home. Again, this weird logic I just attributed to dd not being good at answering questions and interviewing (I have regrets, sorry dd.)

3) Dismissal of WWX -This is when I really need to apologize to dd. This is about the interview where dd said he would throw WWX into the rive and keep JC. I thought that dd just didn’t understand LWJ’s character and was kinda being mean to WWX for no reason. But now, with other things, I’m much more convinced he was doing it on purpose to a) anger gg cuz it’s fun and b) to tell gg that he doesn’t love WWX so that gg will know dd likes him and not WWX. 

4) Dismissal of Wangxian - Similar as the last one. This one was about the bts where gg called dd/LWJ a “fuckboy” because dd said he (as LWJ) didn’t start liking WWX until after he died. And I thought it was weird that dd didn’t understand his character of LWJ or Wangxian’s relationship, especially when it seems pretty obvious from that bts that everyone else was pretty clued in on what’s going on. And he was almost so “oblivious” about it that he may be doing it on purpose. Which now looking back, I think he was doing it on purpose with the same reasoning as the point above. 

5) Editing of bts - I don’t watch a lot of interviews so idk if this is the same across the board (probably is) but a lot of the TU interviews were cut together a lot (you can tell it was over-edited.) It was very distracting imo and I much rather prefer the very natural flow of the 160 min bts interviews that was released this year. But anyways, back then I thought the interviews was cut to make the casts seem much closer or friendlier with each other (create like a happy up-beat atmosphere.) But after watching the 160 min bts, I realized that the editing was distracting on purpose and trying to paint a “friendly” “brotherly” vibe. Cuz the 160 min interview....the vibe is almost interviewing a married couple and we on the audience are just third-wheeling them. Like I feel like I am intruding on something private 👀

My 5 Favorite Moments of GGDD

Like last time, the GGDD moments were difficult to choose, because I like them all. I had to look at some things again. But, finally, I posted it for mistake...😃😃😃😃. The fate wanted me to post this.

5. On BAZAAR interview, first of all I love the fact that they say that they knew each other before on TTXS, but both emphasize that there was no eye contact, nor that they spoke, but that's not what I like, it's just an addition for put us, in context. What I like, is when GG draws DD (I think most of them like it), DD says his eyes aren't that big, but GG says he had heard comments from some friends saying that DD's eyes were tight, so GG drew DD's eyes bigger. Meanwhile, he says that ... DD looks at him with a silly face and smiles, even he places his hand on his chin, looking very focused on what his GG says (it is my impression, it can vary between viewers), GG makes a sign, but DD plays dumb and clears his throat, looking away (more like he's trying not to see his GG).

4. In TTXS, when they were together in the same place for the first time, in 2017. A cute GG, with a pink jacket and accompanied by X-NINE and a DD very cute and surprisingly smiling, imitating everything that his not-yet-GG did, is that DD couldn't take his eyes off from GG, DD moved his hands nervously when he was next to GG, and DD looked at him when GG looked away, but stopped when it was already very obvious (I keep saying it's my perspective, others may think other things). I don't think GG didn't realize it, because I think, when someone looks at another person a lot, that person has to realize it, for me, DD…well, the fool was very obvious. He even showed off his mating dancing (is a joke) just to impress his GG and use his pistol finger to aim at him at the end of the dance (yeah, for me he aimed at GG). DD and his love at first sight…GG couldn't be saved.

3. At Happy Camp. First is the fact that they sat next to each other, moving away if the person on the opposite side got too close, so they were practically on top of each other (I have a meme about that…). When the hosts asked questions, they both started whispering to each other (I won't say anything more about this). Then there's the dance they did, DD was distracted by GG (my mom told me *the boy in the flowered shirt* didn't dance that well, just looking at GG and that was a comment she made when I didn't even believe that they were SZD, still) and then there's that dance move that couples suspiciously do in their wedding photos. Then, DD started pouting, because GG was paying more attention to Daxun. At the Happy Camp hole games. DD allows GG to win, even though DD is competitive by nature and always wants to win (that seemed pretty obvious to me, DD's “double standard” makes an appearance, for his GG). GG gets jealous of Daxun, when he and DD are trapped inside the hole, one on top of the other (his face is scary), but DD doesn't realize at the time (but then cleverly fixes it). Also, when DD gets hurt (although this isn't a good thing) we see GG's real concern, that he is unlike any other. You can see the others concerned, but GG's concern is so legitimate and true that it even hurts me every time I see him again (maybe because he felt guilty that DD hurt himself from the necklace he gave him). The last thing about this, is the fact that they share every little comment, no matter how silly it is, it is so sweet.

2. TTXS 2019, First is the fact that DD invited GG, I think, he could invited someone else. After all, GG was a person, whom DD knew for a short time in 2018, if we put them on the screen, but still DD decided to take it to TTXS, who are a family to him. Then, GG and DD sang their respectively songs "What I Miss" and "If I Were Young", I mean from all the speculation that was made with bombology, DD was supposed to be angry that day (for some reasons), but when they both sing these songs. The way DD sang the song and how sweet GG smile was, DD's voice was so soft and full of soul, so soothing. GG nailed the high notes and turned to DD to meet his eyes while singing. DD was fascinated even though he can't clearly show it. Uff...every time I see them I have to look away, I can't handle that ... both are so...well, that's why I like it so much ... besides, the fact that DD brought his photo album when he was a child and GG wanted to take it (is a joke 😂), he was serious about bringing the album, DD is so silly cute. GG also sings "Love Confession", when he's sitting with the other guests. DD stares at him with sheep's eyes, until GG signals DD for stop to looking at him (with heart eyes), because they are recording them...this man, I can't handle him, neither of them.

1. Interview for "The Paper", DD and GG both have a stuffed animal in their hands (they both look sweet). MC ask them various things (obviously), they both look so comfortable and smiling. MC even ask them if WWX and LWJ's bedtime was the same as them. DD says no, and GG says he's similar, GG says "Sometimes he ... aren't you?" "Sometimes you will stay up later?" (Me: GG, how do you know that? 👀, they are the best friends forever 😂) and DD says yes. Near the end they talked about when they were both filming, that they should record scenes from when WWX and LWJ were young by the day and at night the "after 13/16 years" scenes. The MC asks, what would they think, if a TV show organizes them to go skiing and DD says he can teach to GG and GG laughs saying he's just a beginner (this kills me, they look so wonderfully comfortable) DD looks sweet saying some of ski techniques, while looking at his GG softly, in the end GG says it's okay. Afterwards, the MC asks what they would say to "CQL" fans who say they look the most beautiful after watching all 50 episodes of the drama. GG say a lot of things with a sweet voice and then he is ashamed (it is a sweetheart) and DD wants to laugh at what his GG says, but when it is his turn he says that he will not say anything, GG shows his rabbit teeth ... (Double standard, it seems DD really likes when his GG shows his rabbit teeth to him). And here comes my favorite part. The word is supposed to be deep, but I don't really know what it means, it seems like something important and obviously GG is very surprised that DD said it. Well, they ask you to describe the CQL summer in three words. GG answers right away, burning hot "灼热" (not the literal characters) and DD thinks about it for a moment, quite a bit, compared to how fast GG answered. At the end, DD says true fellings "真情实感" GG looks at him for a moment and lets out a WOW!!! Very tall, covering his mouth, he seemed very surprised. DD seems to realize that it was obvious (it's my imagination), but he says he wants to change the phrase to touching "就 感人" (or something like that) but, GG tells him that they aren't going to edit just because he said that ... I mean, he screwed up 😂😂😂. Simple woman, this is the first place after all.

Sina Interview in CQL film place. When, GG starts to flatter DD by saying that he danced well in TTXS, but later he realizes that he was not only a good dancer, but also a good actor and when he mentions that LZ doesn't have many lines (mentions LWJ and DD gets angry 😂😂😂), DD makes this face. (Note that DD was happy, as he watched his GG compliment him, until he mentioned LZ)
