The Silver Dart (1908-09), the fourth aerodrome designed by the Aerial Experiment Association, was originally built to carry two men. In the same seat. After AEA member Lt. Thomas Selfridge’s death in an airplane crash as a passenger with Orville Wright as pilot, Alexander Graham Bell essentially forbid his organization’s machines from carrying two people. The photo above shows Glenn Curtiss and Doug McCurdy in the Silver Dart.

Today I got a bit teary eyed when I read about Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge’s death. Tom was a member of the Aerial Experiment Association, a group founded by Alexander Graham Bell that included Glenn Curtiss. I have been researching the AEA for a couple of days and I knew that Tom was the first air casualty in the U.S. but reading the details about the airplane crash that killed him really hit me in the feels. I know I’m not the only historian who has found themself mourning someone who died over 100 years earlier. I guess we’re just weird that way.
